Klopp reveals details of his pep talk to Van Dijk before Southampton return

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he spoke with Virgil van Dijk before selecting him in the Liverpool XI to face Southampton.

Van Dijk played the full 90 minutes at St Mary’s in his first return to Southampton since leaving them in a £75million move at the start of this year.

He put in a near faultless display as the Reds recorded a 2-0 win, report the Liverpool Echo.

The Dutchman was predictably booed at St Mary’s but looked unfazed throughout, keeping his former club at bay.

Klopp admitted he had spoken to the 26-year-old ahead of the game to ensure he was mentally right to face off against his former employers, and hailed how well he coped under the spotlight.

“It’s question number five on him!” Klopp said when asked about the centre-back’s contribution. “It could have been a little bit the other way around after a game like this and spoken in a different way.

“But yes, he did really well, he coped with the situation fantastic.

“We had a little talk, I asked ‘what do you think?’ and he said ‘I’m fine boss’, I don’t want to make him nervous if he isn’t nervous but I understand everything in football.

“The crowd is there to make life difficult for the opponent, it was not too difficult from this point of view and I’m happy about it.”

Van Dijk was part of a solid team performance as goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah put Liverpool 2-0 up at half time.

That lead could have been extended with those two – and Sadio Mane – wasting good opportunities in the second half.

But despite a few worrying moments in the opening 45 minutes, it was a routine victory against the Premier League strugglers, which Klopp was delighted with.

“I think not brilliant but ready for hard work, doing the right things in the right moment,” he assessed. “Reacting in a good way in the second half, there’s a few things we didn’t do too well in the first half, we were scoring fantastic away goals.

“It is how an away game should be, we scored two great goals, but in a few situations we were not active enough in our formation, meaning they could play the diagonal balls pretty easy.”

Saints fans forget about ex-stars in Liverpool shirts as real strife hits home

Show/hide article…

Long before the end, they couldn’t even be bothered to boo the pantomime villains.

Southampton fans who stayed to the last kick of an anti-climax had been sharpening pitchforks all week to admonish a £170 million platoon of refugees who deserted the cause for the Mersey Riviera.

But Virgil van Dijk, the world’s most expensive defender, didn’t put a foot wrong.

And by the closing minutes, Liverpool were so comfortable that manager Jurgen Klopp virtually dared the rabble-rousers to crank up their grievances by sending on south coast exiles Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.

In fairness, Lallana and Lovren have probably encountered more hostility at a church fete.

Saints were booed off, and if Mauricio Pellegrino hoped their first win in 13 Premier League games at West Brom eight days earlier had lifted the siege, he is back behind the barbed wire and sandbags now.

After Huddersfield and Newcastle’s quantum leaps towards safety earlier in the day, Saints could not handle the burden of following suit.

In Open golf parlance, Pellegrino’s men were like the last men out on the course, knowing a par four on the 72nd hole will be enough to lift the Claret Jug – but they blew it by finding water off the tee and the greenside bunker that’s like a gravel pit.

With 11 games to go, and a relegation battle which changes colours with every twist of the kaleidoscope, Saints must confront a heinous dilemma.

Do they stick with Pellegrino, whose support among the disgruntled patrons waned long ago, or twist in the hope his replacement is a Red Adair and not a red herring.

“The second half was really bad,” admitted Pellegrino. “The anxiety in my players was too high. We have to be more brave.

“Obviously we are not happy to be in the bottom three and we understand the emotion of the fans, but we have to keep going.”

Either way, Saints’ fate will be sealed in a four-act drama next month, when they face Stoke, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham on consecutive weekends.

Lose three of those four, and Pellegrino’s blueprint for survival will be scattered to the four winds.

Jurgen Klopp hails Virgil van Dijk’s ‘fantastic’ return to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk dealt “fantastically” with his potentially awkward return to Southampton, according to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Van Dijk produced a solid performance in central defence as Liverpool ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The Dutchman was booed by some sections of the home support following his £75m move from the Saints to Liverpool in the January transfer window, and Klopp believes Van Dijk did well to deal with the hostile reception on his first return to his former club.

“He did really well and dealt with the situation fantastically,” said Klopp. "We had a little talk before the game, asking him what he thought - ‘No, I’m fine, boss’.

"I didn’t want to make him nervous if he isn’t, obviously he wasn’t.

“The crowd is there to make life difficult for the opponent, but it wasn’t too difficult for him from this point of view and I’m happy about that.”

Roberto Firmino handed the Reds an early lead with a well-taken finish before turning provider for Mohamed Salah, who notched his 29th goal of the season following an exquisite assist from the Brazilian.

Salah remains in the running for the Premier League Golden Boot after scoring his 22nd league goal of the campaign - a strike which saw him move back to within one of leading scorer Harry Kane - and Klopp hailed the Egyptian as “fantastic” in his post-match interview.

“I really think (Sergio) Aguero and Kane and a few others are really good players as well, but our boys are important for us,” said the German.

"I love them because of their skills, their attitude but their work-rate is outstanding. They profit from our style of play as well. They play in areas where they like to have the ball.

“But, in this strong league, you cannot be third without fantastic players. They are two of them.”

Premier League fans’ verdict: Arsenal supporters brought back down

Show/hide article…

Another exciting weekend of action saw Manchester City tighten their grip on the Premier League title race with Sergio Aguero untouchable.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur earned the north London bragging rights with their derby victory over rivals Arsenal.

Here, Sportsmail gets the fans’ verdicts following the latest weekend of action…

The most one-sided north London Derby I’ve ever seen. Arsenal set up like lambs to the slaughter and, bar a couple of breaks in the first half and a last-minute chance for Lacazette, were absolutely dominated throughout.

Arsenal fans were smacked back to reality with north London derby 1-0 hammering at Wembley. The club is finished under Arsene Wenger. The question is, how deep do the board let the rot set in before they do the right thing for the fans, the club and the future?

I know there were a few injuries picked up but Sam Allardyce shouldn’t be changing that team whatsoever. We have lacked consistency and have not stuck to a system so changing it again will send us backwards (again). Important three points for us.

Lengthy injuries continue to hamper the squad. It was far from one-way traffic but we wasted plenty of chances. We have to be more clinical. Even in defeat impressive Alexander Sorloth was a positive.

The missed penalty summed up our day and maybe our season. Our performance was so stilted and so laboured that relegation looks a real possibility. As we continue to squander winnable matches it becomes harder to see where the points necessary for survival are going to come from.

The equaliser was a bit inevitable but the 90th minute was magic! First Ryan and then Dunk saved the day and seconds later Knockaert made an equally important clearance off the line. On moments like those, seasons are made.

A poor game but a phenomenal three points. Burnley were rigid and resolute and made it a frustrating game, although after pushing on and shifting up a gear in the second-half, we finally managed to break through. The Swans continue to fly and long may they continue to in the Premier League.

I don’t think it matters how we play at Swansea, it always seems to end in defeat. We were disappointing throughout but for much of the game Swansea were no better. Swansea went for it with their substitutions and once the goal went in we looked a beaten team. It’s not helping having so many players out injured. We need some of them back and soon.

West Ham welcomed back Michail Antonio and Marko Arnautovic and were rewarded with a fine attacking display. The side had a fluidity and confidence not seen since the win at Huddersfield. If they can replicate this level of performance in the coming weeks, relegation will no longer be a fear.

An unchanged starting XI unchanged from our win over Chelsea struggled to deal with West Ham’s wide play and balls into the box. Michail Antonio ran rings around Daryl Janmaat. Gracia showed encouraging flexibility by switching to a back four at half-time and the additional man in midfield really changed the game. Despite dominating possession, our lack of imagination proved costly again and a fluke second goal sealed the win.

City were good without being close to our best, but thanks to De Bruyne’s vision, Aguero’s ruthlessness and Schmiechel’s bloopers this ended up being fantastically comfortable. We were a little sloppy first half and then turned the screw in the second. Aguero continues to guarantee goals, De Bruyne continues to guarantee brilliance and City continue to run away with it.

City are destroying teams at home but this was bit disappointing after going in at the break after giving a good account of ourselves. The goal straight after half-time put paid to all that hard work. Vardy was looking sharp up front but unfortunately the same didn’t apply to the defending and goalkeeping.

This could be a season-changing win. After five straight defeats, Wagner went back to the tactics that got us to the Premier League. The high-intensity, pressing and attacking football returned and Steve Mounie was the focal point. Hopefully this is the catalyst for survival.

Slack defending by captain Simon Francis is becoming a big concern. Bournemouth’s central midfield was ponderous against Huddersfield, beaten to the ball every time. The unbeaten record has gone and it’s hard to explain why Bournemouth were so far off the pace. Bournemouth have to react with more vigour and fight.

Newcastle were low on confidence but knew if they kept a tight ship at the back they would have one or two chances to grab a goal.

The defensive effort was the difference. Jamaal Lascelles pulled off two point-blank blocks in quick succession to deny Martial an equaliser.

Martin Dubravka on debut pulled off several smart saves to keep the Magpies ahead.

Awful performance overall. Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku tried, Anthony Martial missed sitters and Chris Smalling exposed all his flaws for the second time in three games.

In our usual style we failed to maintain our intensity and gave away an easily avoidable goal. It’s beyond me that we sold our best player Virgil van Dijk and stood still in the market.

We are in a relegation battle and Mauricio Pellegrino’s side have once again shown a serious lack of fight, in-game management and attacking flair.

There had been signs of improvement in recent weeks, but the reality is that our only win in 13 League fixtures came against West Brom, who sit rock bottom.

No drama, no defensive blunders, just a routine, professional, mature win. More of this please, Reds!

Virgil van Dijk was imperious on his return to St Mary’s and - one or two first wobbles aside - the defence as a whole were excellent.

Loris Karius did what was required of him in the first half and could have sat in the stands for the second.

At the other end, Sadio Mane just can’t get going at the moment but when Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino are in this kind of form it doesn’t matter.

Salah-Firmino duo dazzles in Van Dijk’s winning Southampton return

Show/hide article…

This was the kind of routine win that Liverpool rarely seem to be able to produce. Their front players produced wonderful goals and, for once, there were no dramas at the other end as Jurgen Klopp’s side moved back into third and closed the gap on second-placed Manchester United to two points.

The defence had one or two wobbles in the first half but the way Liverpool kept the home side at arm’s length after the break was encouraging. Virgil Van Dijk was dominant but this was a solid outing from the whole team.

It’s nit-picking, but the margin of victory should have been greater. Liverpool were excellent defensively but failed to make the most of counter-attacking opportunities.

7 – Klopp set his team up to play a certain style and he got the result, so job done. Liverpool are usually more on the front foot but the plan of allowing Southampton to come forward and then exploiting the space left behind worked well. Substitutions were made at the right time but, had a third goal arrived, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah might have been rested a little earlier.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Loris Karius, 7 – Made a few good saves in the first half, with the pick coming when he was quick off his line to deny Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. One or two slightly unconvincing punches apart, this was another encouraging display as he looks to establish himself.

DF Trent Alexander-Arnold, 7 – Kept the talented Dusan Tadic in check throughout and produced some excellent early passes into space that lead to dangerous counter-attacks, particularly in the first half.

DF Joel Matip, 7 – Played his part in a good defensive showing and contributed at the other end with a crisp pass into Salah in the build-up to the second goal.

DF Virgil Van Dijk, 8 – Excellent. All eyes were on him as he returned to his former club but the defender took everything in stride and was a picture of composure. He organised and cajoled his teammates and was cool in possession.

DF Andrew Robertson, 7 – Another energetic outing. He had one or two difficult moments with crosses that dropped over his head and led to chances, but the second half was much more comfortable and he got forward to good effect.

MF Emre Can, 6 – Not his best performance but steady enough, as he got a win as captain at the fourth time of asking. Caught in possession a couple of times, one of which led to a booking when he brought down Oriol Romeu. Needs to stop shooting from 25 yards with his weaker foot.

MF Georginio Wijnaldum, 7 – Neat and tidy, defensively diligent and made some excellent runs ahead of his front men that, on another day, might have seen him get on the scoresheet.

MF Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 6 – Started brightly, had a shot saved and played the pass that released Salah in the build-up to the opener. But Oxlade-Chamberlain faded as the game wore on and it was no surprise that he was the first player substituted, midway through the second half.

FW Mohamed Salah, 8 – Registered a goal and an assist, even though he wasn’t at his best. He missed a great chance to put the game to bed when he blazed over from 14 yards but, still, he is proving virtually unstoppable this season and is just one goal behind Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot.

FW Roberto Firmino, 8 – Reached the 20-goal milestone for the season when he side-footed home Salah’s pass after six minutes and returned the favour just before half-time with an extravagant back heel. Firmino was given a well-earned rest late on, perhaps with an eye on Wednesday’s Champions League clash in Porto.

FW Sadio Mane, 6 – Having had a “Fab Four” not so long ago, Liverpool now have a “Dynamic Duo,” because Philippe Coutinho has left and Mane is badly out of form. He was slightly better in this game and showed signs that he might play his way out of his slump, but he’s a long way from the form that made him the club’s Player of the Year last season.

MF James Milner, 7 – Brought on to provide stability in midfield and he did just that. He tackled, made interceptions and passed the ball efficiently.

MF Adam Lallana, NR – Lively in the brief time he was on, he kept the ball, showed good skill and lots of energy. He should have marked his cameo with a goal, though.

DF Dejan Lovren, NR – On to help see out four minutes of stoppage time, he was spared a hostile reception from the home crowd as most of them had already gone home.

‘Suggestions for defrosting feet?’: Lallana shows off battered toes

Show/hide article…

Being a Premier League footballer is often seen as being one of the most glamourous careers possible, one seeped in money and fame.

However, Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana proved the side-effects of one of the downsides - being a substitute in a match played on a wet, cold winter day.

Lallana was on the bench for the Reds against his former club, Southampton, at St. Mary’s on Sunday in the Premier League.

In the changing room after he came on for the last 20 minutes, Lallana shared a snap on Instagram of his feet, with his toes bright white with cold.

He also sported a hefty bruise on his right foot, having taken a tough tackle during his cameo, with his left big toe also banged, the other in a plaster.

The England international managed to make light of the situation, asking whether there were ‘any suggestions for defrosting feet’.

While Lallana’s feet may have taken a battering from opponents and the elements, he will simply be glad they saw some action on Sunday after a long period out injured.

He has boosted his World Cup credentials by returning to action, playing 20 minutes against his former club in a 2-0 win.

It was more successful than his appearance for the under-23s in midweek, when Lallana was sent off for barging an opponent after a tough tackle.

Gao joined by Krueger and Liebherr in China

Show/hide article…

SAINTS’ majority shareholder Gao Jisheng invited the club’s chairman Ralph Krueger and fellow owner Katharina Liebherr to China to celebrate Chinese New Year – and watch the team’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The trio are pictured here alongside Gao’s daughter, Nelly, with Saints scarves draped around their necks as they tuned into watch Mauricio Pellegrino’s men in action.

The group are together ahead of the Chinese New Year, which arrives this Friday, February 16.

Saints were embracing the traditions of their new owner’s homeland at St Mary’s ahead of the new year, with people dressed as golden Chinese dragons putting on a display before the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The dragons laid on a performance in front of the Kingsland Stand while snow swirled around St Mary’s.

None of this brought Saints good fortune, however, as Pellegrino’s men slumped back into the Premier League’s relegation zone with a defeat, which ended their six-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

With teams around them winning, Saints ended the weekend in 18th place in the Premier League as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool to victory.

It would have undoubtedly been a difficult watch for Gao, who bought an 80 per cent share in Saints for around £210m last August from the Liebherr family, who still have a 20 per cent stake in the club.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool: Pellegrino calls on Saints to be braver

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Saints have to be braver if they are to win their Premier League survival battle.

There was a worrying lack of character in the second half at St Mary’s as Saints showed precious little fight to try and get into the game as they trailed Liverpool 2-0.

Having fallen behind to an early goal from Roberto Firmino, Saints rallied and created chances in the first half, only to concede again just before the break.

It was a very different story in the second period where they barely mustered an attack, let alone gave Liverpool any defensive troubles.

Having slipped back into the bottom three before the start of play due to results elsewhere, it was a worrying moment for Pellegrino, who has challenged a squad of players who are still behind him to put it right.

“I think when you feel it is really difficult maybe it is the impression because we have to be more brave in these sort of situations,” said Pellegrino.

“Sometimes you can be losing 3-0 but you have to show another spirit to try to bounce back at least and try until the end.

“Today the biggest defeat was in the way we play in the second half for me.”

The response from the Saints players was all the more surprising given that recent performances have shown signs of improvement, along with some results including beating West Brom last time out.

However, there seemed to be very little belief in the side once they had fallen two goals behind.

“Obviously we are not happy with that but my players are conscious and now every single week three points change everything,” reflected the Saints manager.

“I think we have got the capacity to try to fight.

“Everything is really equalised now and really tight and I think the team that is calm in the concept and the organisation and is focussed on what you do on the job and is brave in character will be the team who gets more points to go up.”

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool - Saints return to the relegation zone

Show/hide article…

Liverpool climbed back up to third in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory at Saints that left Mauricio Pellegrino under renewed pressure and his team at increasing risk of relegation.

The home supporters again turned on their manager after their latest defeat, secured by goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, left them in 18th place and took their visitors back above Tottenham.

It also ensured a victorious return to St Mary’s for Virgil van Dijk, the £75million defender who left for Liverpool at the end of December and who so many believe disrupted and undermined Southampton’s disappointing season.

The pressure on the hosts had increased with earlier, unexpected victories for Newcastle and Huddersfield, respectively over Manchester United and Bournemouth, that took them back into the bottom three.

They had had little time to settle when in only the sixth minute their afternoon worsened when they fell behind following another of Liverpool’s swift breaks.

After Loris Karius threw possession out to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the one-time Southampton winger curled a ball towards Salah that was missed by the clumsy Wesley Hoedt, leaving Salah with a simple pass to Firmino who from in front of goal struck first-time beyond Alex McCarthy and into the bottom right corner.

Owing largely to the vision of James Ward-Prowse, the hosts responded and threatened until Liverpool doubled their lead. The midfielder curled a fine ball over the top of Liverpool’s defence and to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who at the back post hesitated, allowing Karius to spread himself and then comfortably save the shot he eventually produced.

Another cross from Ward-Prowse gave club-record signing Guido Carrillo a header from in front of goal that he nodded downwards to present Karius with a routine save, and then the midfielder tested the goalkeeper with a header of his own.

Meeting Dusan Tadic’s left-wing cross at the back post he forced the diving Karius to tip over the crossbar, and as on so many other occasions this season, Southampton’s profligacy was then punished.

From a seemingly-unthreatening position, Joel Matip found Salah, who towards the edge of the area then ruthlessly exchanged a delightful one-two with Firmino, whose backheel into his path in front of goal was classily sent towards the bottom left corner by the Egyptian for his 29th goal of the season.

Another former Southampton player almost inspired Liverpool to a third goal midway through the second half. Sadio Mane intercepted a ball from Hojbjerg before carrying possession into the penalty area and passing to Firmino, whose low shot was saved by McCarthy but only to Salah, who then struck first-time but into the side netting.

Mane then also struck harmlessly wide, despite time and space, following a through-ball from Firmino during a period in which the hosts offered little resistance and were fortunate not to concede again.

When Pellegrino replaced Ward-Prowse with Shane Long in his pursuit of a reaction, Southampton’s supporters again chanted “You don’t know what you’re doing”. They then booed their team at the final whistle when their defeat was confirmed.

The damage was all done in the first-half, as Saints’ defence wilted under pressure from Liverpool’s rapid attack.

Just six minutes had passed when Wesley Hoedt failed to deal with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s through ball to gift Mo Salah possession.

Salah quickly squared to Roberto Firmino, who made no mistake from close range, firing past Alex McCarthy.

After a period of positivity from Saints, Liverpool’s second goal came just before half-time, as Salah played a quick-fire one-two off Firmino to bang home to make it 2-0.

Following that, 45 minutes of stalemate ensued and Liverpool strolled away with the victory to leave Saints back in the relegation zone with 11 games to play.
