Southampton 0 Liverpool 2: Firmino and Salah fire Reds back into third

Show/hide article…

Mohamed Salah moved to within one goal of the Premier League’s top scorer Harry Kane after scoring in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Salah’s 42nd-minute goal, which was set up by a fine back flick by Roberto Firmino, is the forward’s 22nd in the top-flight this term, just one behind Tottenham striker Kane who has 23 goals.

Salah’s effort doubled Liverpool’s advantage at St Mary’s after Firmino had opened the scoring in just the fifth minute when he latched onto the Egyptian’s square ball to slot past Alex McCarthy.

The win sends Jurgen Klopp’s men into third place in the Premier League standings, just two points behind Manchester United who lost to Newcastle earlier in the day, while Southampton remain in the relegation zone.

Much of the pre-game focus centred on Virgil van Dijk, who was making his first return to St Mary’s since sealing a £75m move to Liverpool from Southampton last month.

Klopp had admitted he would speak to the defender to prepare him for the hostile reception he could face back at his former stomping ground, which appeared a good move as Van Dijk received jeers and boos once the match began.

But the Dutchman was left laughing and celebrating after just five minutes when Liverpool took the lead through Firmino.

A long ball over the top was missed by Wesley Hoedt, which allowed Mohamed Salah to latch onto the ball and then square it to an unmarked Firmino, who side-footed it home.

The goal was Firmino’s 20th in all competitions this season - the first time he has reached that mark since the 2013-14 campaign when he played for Hoffenheim.

Not long afterwards, the Brazilian thought he had won Liverpool a penalty when he was brought down in the area following an arm around the neck by Jack Stephens, but referee Martin Atkinson didn’t think there was enough contact to award a spot-kick.

Southampton rallied back and had several chances to equalise but Loris Karius first denied Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from close range before he claimed Guido Carrillo’s header from inside the box and then palmed James Ward-Prowse’s effort from the right.

Southampton’s inability to convert their chances was latched onto by Liverpool, who duly made it 2-0 with three minutes of the first half remaining.

Joel Matip started the move that led to the goal with his low ball to Salah, who passed it to Firmino. The Brazilian then pulled out a lovely back flick that fell back to Salah, who coolly finished off from close range to net his 22nd league goal of the season - just one behind top scorer Harry Kane.

Salah could have matched the Tottenham’s striker’s tally after the break when Sadio Mane’s acrobatic effort was blocked and instead fell to the Egyptian, who subsequently fired over the bar.

Southampton should have capitalised on the missed chance by getting a goal back but Wesley Hoedt failed to direct Ward-Prowse’s free kick into the goal from a tight angle.

And the Saints were lucky not to be 3-0 down shortly afterwards when McCarthy denied Firmino before Salah’s rebounded effort flew wide and substitute Adam Lallana fired wide.

Yet, it didn’t matter as Liverpool held on to take all three points and keep their hopes for a top-four finish alive while ensuring Southampton remain in the drop zone.

Southampton will face-off against Liverpool today on Sky Sports Main Event

Southampton will take on Liverpool this afternoon.

The Premier League clash will see Virgil van Dijk return to Southampton for the first time since his £75million move to Liverpool earlier this year.

Should the Saints fail to secure a victory, Mauricio Pellegrino’s side will equal a club record of seven home Premier League games without victory.

Pellegrino made 13 appearances for the Reds under Rafa Benitez in 2005, before serving as his assistant between 2008-2010.

Van Dijk is the latest of six players to make the jump from St Mary’s to Anfield since June 2014.

Southampton have no fresh injuries and are unlikely to change the side that beat West Brom last week – their first victory in 13 Premier League games

Manolo Gabbiadini is suffering from a hip problem, while Charlie Austin also remains out.

He starts against his old club today as do fellow former Saints Sadio Mane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Alberto Moreno has recovered from his muscle problem and is included on the bench.

Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini is nursing a hip problem and is among the substitutes but Charlie Austin remains out as Guido Carrillo keeps his place up top.

Southampton vs Liverpool: Premier League live!

Liverpool arrive at St Mary’s resembling something akin to Southampton’s parent club. So many of the graduates at Saints have ended up at Anfield in recent years and today Virgil van Dijk plays in the centre of Jurgen Klopp’s defence, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane also starting and Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana on the bench.

Mauricio Pellegrino – a former Liverpool player himself – will be desperate to build on last week’s 3-2 win over West Brom and ride their momentum away from the drop, especially given Saints’ run of five away games in their next six Premier League encounters.

However they face a Liverpool side determined to keep up their top-four push and a forward in Mohamed Salah who cannot stop scoring, with plenty of foils around him that will keep Southampton’s defence occupied.

Van Dijk makes very awkward mistake on first return to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk made a pretty awkward mistake ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash with his former team Southampton - by walking into the home dressing room.

The Holland international joined the Reds in the January transfer window, after Jurgen Klopp’s side parted with £75million to make the deal happen.

Van Dijk had been desperate to leave Southampton, and was delighted he finally got his desired transfer before the window had even opened.

But it seems he is so used to life on the south coast that he came over all confused on his first return to St Mary’s following his January move.

Sky Sports cameras followed the centre-back as he arrived at his former stomping ground and made a beeline for the home dressing room.

It’s not clear whether he was simply popping his head around the door to greet his old colleagues, or whether he was making an honest mistake.

Van Dijk’s Liverpool career kick-started in sensational fashion, as he netted the winner in their FA Cup clash against bitter rivals Everton.

But he has struggled in games since then, and was criticised by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who suggested he needs to lose some weight.

The Dutchman responded to Carragher once the dust had settled, telling the former centre-back: "He [Carragher] needs to come into the dressing room and he can see if I need to lose some weight because I don’t think I need to lose some weight.

"I have been out for eight months – last January until September really and I didn’t play at Premier League level.

"It is not easy to come back, especially when I have made such a big step as now with all the eyes on me and they look at every small detail.

"I am just focusing on the team and myself. Other people will talk and have their opinions. There is nothing I can do about that. I will just try and enjoy my game and enjoy being here and that is what I am definitely doing.

"It is a strength of mine to not really bother too much when people have their opinions, especially negative opinions.

"I know when I am doing it well and exactly when I am doing it wrong. That is what I am working on and obviously no-one will talk about my performance [against Spurs] in general.

“We defended very well, had two penalties against us with a lot of question marks around them. I know that as a team and the players around me we did very well against one of the best strikers in Europe.”

Southampton 0 Liverpool 2: Firmino and Salah on target in Reds victory

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk endured a hate-filled reception as he stepped out at St Mary’s for the first time since his record breaking £75m move to Anfield last month. But Salah helped Van Dijk turn a deaf ear to the taunts by scoring one goal and making another as the Reds coasted to victory. Salah’s strike took his tally for the season to 28 in all competitions but not before Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino had put Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead. The signs that Van Dijk’s replacement Wesley Hoedt was in for a shocker were clear straight away when his mistake in the opening exchanges almost led to a Firmino goal. But it only took six minutes and three passes for Liverpool to take the lead when two of their deadly trio linked up to rip apart Southampton’s haphazard defence. Former Saints man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s long ball forward wasn’t dealt with by the hapless Hoedt, leaving Salah to square the ball to Firmino who drilled it past goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

Liverpool almost doubled their cushion moments later when Oxlade-Chamberlain fired a shot at goal from outside the box but a deflection took the sting off it. Saints eventually registered their first chance of the match after 18 minutes and should have equalised. Midfield enforcer Oriol Romeu’s pass found teammate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg unmarked in the Liverpool area but he could only rifle his shot straight at goalkeeper Loris Karius. The German shot stopper was then called into action twice in quick succession on the half-hour mark as Southampton went in search of an equaliser. Saints’ academy ace James Ward-Prowse’s delivery was met by striker Guido Carrillo but he could only nod his effort at Karius. And Ward-Prowse was involved again seconds later when he was picked out by Dusan Tadic at the back-post but the 23-year-old had his header tipped over the bar. Firmino and Salah proved to be too good for the home side again in the 42nd minute.

Egyptian winger Salah bagged his 22nd league goal of the season when he latched on to the Brazilian striker’s back-heel to slot it past McCarthy. The destructive 25-year-old almost added Liverpool’s third just after the break as the ball found him just inside the area. But after taking a touch to set himself up, Salah could only fire his effort over the top of the bar without troubling the Saints ‘keeper. Southampton defender Hoedt should have made amends for his costly error in the first-half when he met Ward-Prowse’s low free kick but his shot went just wide of Karius’ goal. Liverpool continued to sense blood and their midfielders began queuing up to get their name on to the scoresheet. Georginio Wijnaldum was the first to try his luck from distance before Juventus target Emre Can sent his shot crashing over the bar from 30 yards out.
