Virgil van Dijk to make Southampton return for under-23s on Monday

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk will play for Southampton’s under-23 side on Monday as he continues to build up his match fitness.

Van Dijk, 26, returned to team training this week, having trained by himself after handing in a transfer request to Southampton last month in an attempt to force an exit from the club.

The Netherlands international was linked with clubs including Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, but a summer move failed to materialise.

Van Dijk has not played for Southampton since sustaining an ankle injury in January, but manager Mauricio Pellegrino says the defender will feature for the club’s second-string side on Monday against Aston Villa at the Bescot Stadium.

“Virgil is coming from a long period of time without playing a game. This is my concern right now,” Pellegrino is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“He will play Monday in the reserve team. We try to help him to be ready to help the team. He was training well this week. Now everything is normal.”

Van Dijk was absent on Saturday as Southampton suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season, going down 2-0 at home to Watford.

The humilating Chelsea moment which made Mourinho realise Matic was ‘my guy’

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho has revealed the exact moment he realised Nemanja Matic was ‘one of my guys’ - the day he humiliated him during a Chelsea match.

Matic was a key part of Mourinho’s Chelsea side which won the 2014/15 Premier League. Now, after a shock £40million this summer, the Serbian midfielder looks set to be a vital part of Mourinho’s Manchester United too.

In a new interview with the Sunday Times, the Portuguese manager explains why he is such a huge fan of Matic, commenting: “I cannot say I have had better guys in my career.”

He goes on to describe how it was Matic’s reaction to one of Mourinho’s harshest calls which made him understand the strength of his character.

Back in October 2015, Mourinho’s reign at Chelsea was starting to unravel. The Blues had had a disastrous start to their Premier League defence, and things only got worse in the 3-1 defeat at home to Southmpton.

At half-time in the match, with the scores at 1-1, Mourinho brought Matic on for Ramires.

Then, on 74 minutes, he hauled him off again, replacing Matic with Loic Remy.

For any footballer, being a ‘subbed sub’ is the ultimate embarrassment.

But as Mourinho explains, Matic proved himself to be a true professional in the way he responded.

“The press wants a story, the press wants blood,” remembers Mourinho. "My blood, or his blood, or both.

"He was really sad. I was also sad because it’s not something nice and it’s something I did only twice in my career.

"But the next day he comes to see me and he says, 'I’m not happy, but it’s my fault. I’m not happy with what you did to me, but it’s my fault, because the way I was playing I can understand the change.

"‘So let’s keep going.’

"We didn’t keep going for a long time because a few weeks later I was sacked.

"But again he was one of ‘my guys’, was one of the guys that we kept close during these years even not working together.

“So I know that the big man is there, even with more maturity.”

Liverpool News: Coutinho warned by Ferdinand, Van Dijk battle, Klopp on Mane red card

Show/hide article…

Rio Ferdinand says Philippe Coutinho could be frozen out by his team-mates

Philippe Coutinho could be frozen out at Liverpool by his team-mates.

Coutinho handed in a transfer request with Barcelona desperate to land the Brazil international this summer.

And Ferdinand has warned Coutinho, claiming he must work hard when he returns to Liverpool.

He told BT Sport: “It’s all down to one thing, does he come in and act professionally when he is at the training ground?

“If he acts professionally and holds his hands up and says ‘look, I do want to leave but you will still get 100 per cent commitment from me’ and you see that day in day out, you respect that.

“If there’s any negativity or you think he’s giving anything less than 100 per cent, the players will sniff it and they’ll want that guy out.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino faces fan revolt

Show/hide article…

In the 92nd minute at St Mary’s, Cedric Soares took aim from 30 yards and planted a tame shot into the gloves of Heurelho Gomes.

It was met by the loudest cheer of the afternoon from the Southampton fans, an ironic appreciation that their shot-shy side had finally mustered an effort on target.

Not that many of the home faithful had stayed that long. The exodus began when Daryl Janmaat doubled Watford’s lead midway through the second-half and jeers greeted the final whistle from those who stuck it out.

You couldn’t blame them for venting frustrations - this was a film they’d seen before. The Saints have failed to score in nine of their last 12 Premier League matches, including three of four this season.

The beginning of Mauricio Pellegrino’s tenure is starting to look very familiar to the end of Claude Puel’s when it comes to going forward. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Manolo Gabbiadini spent 69 minutes hopelessly isolated in attack, the Italian’s lightning start of six goals in his first four Southampton appearances now a distant memory.

Gabbiadini touched the ball just 10 times on Saturday and two of those were to kick-off. Shane Long and Charlie Austin were thrown on to chase the game late on, but proved equally ineffective.

Nathan Redmond struggled all afternoon, while James Ward-Prowse went off at half-time. Southampton are toothless, yet Pellegrino didn’t pursue a striker during the transfer window and sold Jay Rodriguez to West Brom.

Captain Steven Davis understood the boos that greeted the final whistle: 'Look, they’ve paid their money. They’re entitled to their opinion. But they’re like ourselves in the dressing room.

‘Everyone’s disappointed and I think that’s the biggest frustration. We weren’t at the races and Watford deserved the three points. We will show our true qualities at Crystal Palace [next week].’

The Virgil van Dijk transfer saga distracted Southampton for most of the summer and, though his move to Liverpool didn’t go through, the Dutchman was absent here.

Pellegrino says Van Dijk lacks match fitness and he’ll play with the under-23 side at Aston Villa on Monday.

No such problems for Watford, who sat fourth on Saturday night after long-range strikes by Abdoulaye Doucoure and Janmaat earned a comfortable victory on the south coast.

It continued their unbeaten league start under new boss Marco Silva, though that will be tested against Manchester City on Saturday.

Silva encountered Pep Guardiola when his Olympiacos drew Bayern Munich in the 2015-16 Champions League.

Bayern won 3-0 in Greece and 4-0 at home. ‘It was better days for him,’ joked Silva when reminded of his previous meetings with Guardiola.

But the way Doucoure combined with Tom Cleverley and Nathaniel Chalobah in midfield will give Watford optimism. Doucoure was excellent here, omnipresent as he broke up attacks and got Watford moving forward.

‘In the Premier League nobody knows me,’ said the Frenchman. 'I want to be one of the best, but I have to show like today, a performance like this.

‘I almost went to Lorient [last season] but the transfer was cancelled so I am happy to stay. I want to show my qualities and that’s it.’

Davis: It’s time to show our true qualities

Show/hide article…

STEVEN Davis has urged Saints to recover from their Watford “off day” and show their “true qualities” at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 2-0 defeat to the Hornets at St Mary’s was their first of the season and the captain is adamant the drab performance is NOT a sign of things to come.

“After the games it’s always difficult because you’re frustrated and it’s difficult to find the right words because there’s more frustration now than after sitting back and reflecting and assessing the game properly,” he said.

“We all know, without looking at videos and analysing the game, we should have done a lot better.

“We are a lot better than what we’ve shown today. It’s important we recover from this here and go and show our true qualities at Palace.”

“It was an off day and we need to improve but we’re a lot better than what we showed and we know that, so it’s important we don’t get too down about it,” he continued.

“We know we’re capable of a lot better and we need to go and show that at Palace next week.”

Abdoulaye Doucoure and substitute Daryl Janmaat’s strikes were the difference as Watford imposed themselves on Saints.

“We obviously didn’t start the game well. It’s always difficult to get it back after that. But we just weren’t good enough on the day,” Davis said.

“We’re disappointed with the performance and we need to do better than what we’ve shown.”

“I thought the performances up until now were okay, we seemed to be progressing alright and improving,” he added.

“But today there’s a lot of aspects we can improve on.”

Boos rang around St Mary’s at half time and full time as the fans showed their frustration at a below par performance.

“Look, they’ve paid their money. They’re entitled to their opinion,” Davis said about the fans.

“But they’re like ourselves in the dressing room. Everyone’s disappointed and I think that’s the biggest frustration, you can lose games and play well but we didn’t do that today.

“We weren’t at the races and Watford deserved the three points.”

The 32-year-old midfielder admits Saints played in to Watford’s hands.

“We didn’t start well, we went long a bit too early and that was easy for them to deal with,” he said.

“That played in to their hands a little bit and they were picking a lot of second balls as well. It wasn’t just one thing, it was a lot of areas that we can do a lot better in.

“We need to do a lot better than that to get results.”

While there were many Saints players out on tiresome trips on international duty before this game, Davis, who helped Northern Ireland to back-to-back victories in World Cup qualifying last week, did not want to use that as an excuse for the defeat.

“It’s not easy but it’s a factor for every club in the Premier League,” he said.

“Everybody’s got plenty of international players, so everybody has to deal with it. It’s no excuse.

“We’re not looking for an excuse today, it just wasn’t good enough.”

Virgil Van Dijk agreed personal terms with Liverpool, he could move in January - McGarry

Show/hide article…

That’s according to Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window Podcast. He thinks the Southampton defender could still seal a move in January after seeing a dream transfer collapse last month. And, unlike other high-profile players desperate for a move this summer, Van Dijk is in a good position because he will not be cup tied for European competitions. However, Saints may continue to resist because they don’t need the money following Chinese investment in the off season.

“Van Dijk definitely believed his deal to Liverpool was all agreed” McGarry told the Transfer Window Podcast: "Van Dijk, compared to his fellow rebels in the Premier League Alexis Sanchez and Philippe Coutinho, has one great advantage in that he’s not going to be cup tied for European football in the January window. "So, I would say of those three he’s got the best prospects of leaving and joining a club in January. "Liverpool was his first choice.

"I spoke to a close friend of his and Van Dijk definitely believed his deal to Liverpool was all agreed in terms of his personal terms in terms of this transfer window that’s just closed. "I think the takeover of Southampton Football Club, I say takeover, but the investment in Southampton Football Club had a negative effect from Van Dijk’s point of view. "They no longer wanted, or needed, the money that they would get from selling him to Liverpool for about £55m.

"Whether that backfires on them in regard to the player’s performance we’ll have to wait and see as he’s not featured yet. “But I go back to the original point in that Van Dijk has a good chance of moving in January where I would say Sanchez and Coutinho don’t.”

‘Lovely’ Saints fan dies aged just 23

Show/hide article…

TRIBUTES have flooded in for a young Saints fan who passed away suddenly, aged just 23.

Jamie Isherwood, from Thornhill, who was a season ticket holder in the Northam stand, was remembered at the home game at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday with a minute’s applause during the first half.

Jamie, who was a care support worker, died of a suspected heart attack on Friday.

The 23-year-old had been diagnosed with Antiphospholipid syndrome aged 12, which causes an increased risk of blood clots.

Southampton-born and bred, Jamie attended Thornhill School and later Woodlands College.

Cathy Isherwood, Jamie’s mum, told the Daily Echo: “He was a massive Saints fan. He went to every home game and every away game.

“He was lovely, he would help anyone. Everyone says it, but he genuinely would.

“He was very close to his family and his two older brothers. He was brilliant with his oldest brother who has cerebral palsy.

“He was just really kind and funny, a loving guy. His condition didn’t really affect him apart from having to go for blood tests.

“But he had been unwell for around two months and he was advised to have a scan of his head and neck, which showed abnormalities on his brain.”

Jamie was then admitted to Southampton General Hospital in the stroke unit where he rapidly deteriorated.

“He had another scan and we realised then that he had blood clots on his heart valves – his heart was very, very weak,” continued Cathy.

Speaking about the tribute at Saturday’s match, she said: “It was very emotional for me. I know where he sits and looking across he wasn’t there, which was hard.

“A couple of his Saints friends must have told someone and it went from there on social media.”

She added that she wanted to thank the club for their support during and after the game.

“After the match finished I went home to get a shirt that I wanted printed with his name and number. The manager of the Saints shop did that for us for free,” she said.

Tributes were also paid to the young fan on social media.

One wrote: “I’m in total shock, my good mate Jamie Isherwood was taken far too soon. All those fantastic away days with Saints won’t be the same without you fella.”

Another wrote: “RIP Jamie, can’t believe you’re gone, still doesn’t seem real. 23 is far too young to be taken.”
