Abdoulaye Doucoure stars in Watford win at Southampton and claims: I want to be like Kante

Show/hide article…

Watford star Abdoulaye Doucoure was the best player on the pitch

Doucoure has helped Watford make their best ever start to a Premier League season with Saturday’s win making it four games without defeat.

And the 24-year-old powerhouse, who scored his second goal of the season at St Mary’s, admits he is inspired by double title winner and fellow Frenchman Kante.

Doucoure said: “I want to be in the team and to be a leader.

“I am happy but I have to work and then we will see at the end of the season where I am.

“I said before this season that I want to be one of the best midfielders in the league.

“In the Premier League, nobody knows me. I want to be one of the best but I have to show performances like this.

“N’Golo Kante was one of the best players in the Premier League last year. You have a lot of midfielders but I think only on myself. I want to show my qualities.”

THE VERDICT: Patience is needed but it’s already running out

Show/hide article…

OFF days happen and patience is needed as Saints find their way under new management.

But Mauricio Pellegrino is in need of firmer signs of progress – or risk failing to capitalise on favourable early fixtures.

The Saints boss has always been adamant that stamping his ideas and ethos on to the team won’t be an easy or quick process.

It’s shown itself in fits and starts over these first four Premier League games.

But the defeat against Watford really felt like a step backwards, mainly because the visitors arrived in similar circumstances but were more advanced in their evolution.

It was against Marco Silva – a manager also four league games in to his tenure, that Pellegrino’s team struggled to demonstrate progress.

The same can’t be said for Silva’s side, which was organised, well-drilled and cohesive.

Saints just didn’t have that in them on this day and just couldn’t cope with the Hornets’ game.

Kudos to Silva for that.

Granted, Pellegrino and captain Steven Davis insisted it was just an off day for Saints.

And fair enough, off days do happen.

But it’s really not what the club needed right now, when they’re battling to introduce this new style and show that they’re moving forward from some of the reservations over their way of playing of last term.

The supporters showed their frustration on Saturday, booing loudly at half-time, when Manolo Gabbiadini was substituted and when the full-time whistle went against Watford.

Largely, they’re impatient to see the club demonstrating the fashionable and exciting football the team played under Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman.

But this was also restlessness over lack of progress from what Claude Puel’s side were producing last season, which was often accused of being negative.

However, as Pellegrino works out his best system, with the best blend of players, it is unsurprising that Saints might produce a bad display.

This was just simply a poor performance, but Pellegrino says he needs time to change things to what he wants, which is a more attacking, free flowing brand of football.

Time is of the essence, however.

When you see Silva’s team playing in his image, it’s hard to wonder why Pellegrino’s aren’t really clicking yet.

You might be inclined to point to recruitment at this point – did Saints need a creative force to really inject some life in to this struggling attacking line?

Certainly the fact that their only shot on target against Watford came in stoppage time in the second half suggest so.

But, Pellegrino says his team are competitive as they are, so he’s just got to find the right combination of players.

And it seems a few experiments, failed or otherwise are taking place.

We’ve briefly seen a 3-4-3 formation in the 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the League Cup – a failed experiment undoubtedly, but one that could make a return with different personnel.

Against the Hornets, Pellegrino deployed Sofiane Boufal and Nathan Redmond either side of James Ward-Prowse just behind Gabbiadini as an attacking three.

It didn’t really happen for them there, with Ward-Prowse finding it hard to have much influence directly behind Gabbiadini.

Boufal and Redmond’s impact was also very limited as Watford’s midfield three, including the impressive Nathaniel Chalobah and Abdoulaye Doucoure, acted as a powerful unit, which often saw Davis and Oriol Romeu restricted and unable to reach Saints’ forward players.

Saints’ full-backs, Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand, were often also hemmed in with South American wingers Richarlison and Andre Carrillo full of running and ideas.

Cedric especially found it hard to get forward with Richarlison direct, strong and unpredictable on Watford’s left.

Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt in the middle at the back were a decent unit together – and probably the only positive to take from this game from a Saints perspective.

Stephens just looks more mature every game he plays this term, while Hoedt, on his debut, was often composed and comfortable in possession.

There are good signs for the future there, and with Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida also options, there is definitely an argument to switch to three centre backs.

So while Saints struggled to really impose themselves and Watford – often contained by an organised Saints backline, it is no surprise that the two goals in this game came from range.

The first arrived on 38 minutes when the ball pitched up for Doucoure to drill home, the bounce skimming off the slick surface, before flying past Fraser Forster, who may have seen the shot from 25 yards late through a crowded box.

It was a goal that Saints just didn’t seem prepared to concede, and didn’t really react to, finishing the half still trying work out how to break out of the pressing game Watford had brought to St Mary’s.

Pellegrino scrapped his initial experiment with the front three, bringing on more familiar incumbent Dusan Tadic for Ward-Prowse at the break.

It didn’t yield any better results with the boss often seen hands on hips in his technical area, pondering his next move to get the goals flowing.

It just didn’t happen though, this game representing their eighth blank in nine games.

It remains that Gabbiadini’s strike against West Ham is the only one from open play this season.

Pellegrino needs his team to be inspired by his methods – and the sooner the better.

Another disappointing result at struggling Crystal Palace this Saturday would be far from ideal, especially with Manchester United coming to St Mary’s the week after.

Pellegrino will continue to experiment with new ideas and study how to make this Saints team tick and evolve.

Patience is important for that to happen.

But after watching often slow and conservative football last season, the appetite for a change at St Mary’s is high.

As Saints toiled with their way in against Watford, the visitors struck again, further elevating the angst at St Mary’s.

This time, substitute Janmaat was given time and space on the right to pick his spot and drive a swerving effort past a stranded Forster and home with 66 minutes on the clock.

Pellegrino wasted no time in acting, bringing on Shane Long and then Charlie Austin.

But the game was lost at this point and certainly well beyond the hosts as Cedric smacked a low drive, which Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes reacted well to save, to record Saints’ only shot on target.

‘Lovely’ Saints fan dies aged just 23

Show/hide article…

TRIBUTES have flooded in for a young Saints fan who passed away suddenly, aged just 23.

Jamie Isherwood, from Thornhill, who was a season ticket holder in the Northam stand, was remembered at the home game at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday with a minute’s applause during the first half.

Jamie, who was a care support worker, died of a suspected heart attack on Friday.

The 23-year-old had been diagnosed with Antiphospholipid syndrome aged 12, which causes an increased risk of blood clots.

Southampton-born and bred, Jamie attended Thornhill School and later Woodlands College.

Cathy Isherwood, Jamie’s mum, told the Daily Echo: “He was a massive Saints fan. He went to every home game and every away game.

“He was lovely, he would help anyone. Everyone says it, but he genuinely would.

“He was very close to his family and his two older brothers. He was brilliant with his oldest brother who has cerebral palsy.

“He was just really kind and funny, a loving guy. His condition didn’t really affect him apart from having to go for blood tests.

“But he had been unwell for around two months and he was advised to have a scan of his head and neck, which showed abnormalities on his brain.”

Jamie was then admitted to Southampton General Hospital in the stroke unit where he rapidly deteriorated.

“He had another scan and we realised then that he had blood clots on his heart valves – his heart was very, very weak,” continued Cathy.

Speaking about the tribute at Saturday’s match, she said: “It was very emotional for me. I know where he sits and looking across he wasn’t there, which was hard.

“A couple of his Saints friends must have told someone and it went from there on social media.”

She added that she wanted to thank the club for their support during and after the game.

“After the match finished I went home to get a shirt that I wanted printed with his name and number. The manager of the Saints shop did that for us for free,” she said.

Tributes were also paid to the young fan on social media.

One wrote: “I’m in total shock, my good mate Jamie Isherwood was taken far too soon. All those fantastic away days with Saints won’t be the same without you fella.”

Another wrote: “RIP Jamie, can’t believe you’re gone, still doesn’t seem real. 23 is far too young to be taken.”

Liverpool News: Van Dijk agreed personal terms claim, Coutinho return, Ings injury update

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk agreed personal terms with Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

That is according to Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window Podcast, who claims the Southampton defender could still move to Anfield in January.

McGarry said: “Liverpool was his first choice.

“I spoke to a close friend of his and Van Dijk definitely believed his deal to Liverpool was all agreed in terms of his personal terms in terms of this transfer window that’s just closed.”

McGarry added: “Van Dijk has a good chance of moving in January where I would say Sanchez and Coutinho don’t.”

Virgil Van Dijk: Southampton star may have put Liverpool off signing him - Alan Brazil

Show/hide article…

That’s the verdict of player-turned-pundit Alan Brazil in the wake of the summer-long transfer saga concerning the Reds and the Dutchman.

Van Dijk emerged as Jurgen Klopp’s top target to bolster his defence towards the end of last season.

And a move to Anfield looked to be a formality until Southampton accused Liverpool of tapping the centre-back up.

Van Dijk put in a transfer request in a bid to force through a switch and Liverpool remained keen on signing him until deadline day.

However, Southampton stood firm and the 26-year-old will have to wait until at least January before he can leave.

Loan Watch: Four feature in weekend action

Show/hide article…

Gallagher played 78 minutes of the match but saw his new team-mates beaten by a solitary goal scored by Nelson Oliveira on five minutes.

Reed, previously an ever-present for the Canaries, was an unused substitute.

Elsewhere, Jordy Clasie came off the bench to make his Club Brugge debut, but the Belgians surrendered their 100 per cent start to the new season with a 2-1 defeat at Royal Excel Mouscron.

Goalkeeper Harry Lewis was left with mixed feelings as his Dundee United side drew 1-1 at home to Dumbarton.

James Keating’s late equaliser snatched a point from a game that was slipping away, but United missed the chance to go level on points with Scottish Championship leaders St Mirren.

Meanwhile, Olufela Olomola played 45 minutes of Yeovil Town’s goalless draw with Cheltenham Town at Huish Park.

The striker suffered a leg injury in the recent Checkatrade Trophy clash with Exeter City and is still rediscovering full fitness.

Ryan Seager, on loan at MK Dons, was an unused substitute as Robbie Neilson’s men picked up their first away win of the season at the expense of ten-man Plymouth Argyle.

We want to put things right, says Jones

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters have suffered back-to-back league defeats following their 4-0 win over Reading on the opening day of the season, and Jones wants to replicate the performance that earned them that convincing victory tonight.

“Reading was a very good performance and we scored four goals as well, so you can’t really ask for anymore,” he started.

“We want to take elements of that performance into this game against Villa and move on from our past results to put things right.

“It’s good that we’ve had a bit of extended time to regroup after the last few performances. We want to stay together now and push on from here, starting with Aston Villa.”

Villa currently sit fourth in the Premier League 2 table, just three points above Radhi Jaïdi’s men.

And Jones knows that Saints will have to overcome a tough battle to pick up all three points pull level with them.

“It’s be a good test for us,” he continued.

“They will be quite a physical team but also one that will like to get it down and play, so it will be a different type of challenge for us.

“It will be a good test that we will need to overcome and put in the right performance to get a good result.”

How all the Premier League debutants rated from the weekend

Show/hide article…

Following the international break, a number of Premier League sides were ready to throw out debuts to players signed on deadline day in the transfer window.

But it wasn’t just late signings making their first top flight appearances as academy youngsters and fringe players also made the step up as Sportsmail looks back at the best and worst of the debutants from the weekend.

Not the debut Burnley fans would have expected - Phil Bardsley was the only likely candidate from the substitute’s bench.

But the 25-year-old was called upon to replace Tom Heaton after the England stopper was forced off injured in the first half.

Pope had only played in a handful of cup matches for the Clarets but was assured in commanding his box and made a good stop to deny Christian Benteke.

Not given much time to make an impact after replacing Victor Moses at wing-back for the final 17 minutes while Chelsea were leading 2-1.

But the £25million signing from Torino nearly got on the scorehseet, after collecting an Eden Hazard pass and firing inches wide of the post.

Blues fans will hope there is more still to come from the 25-year-old whose brief introduction showed promise.

Not quite a deadline day signing but it was a senior debut for the 19-year-old.

By the time the forward was thrown on, it was already desperate times for Crystal Palace who were 1-0 down at Burnley with just 25 minutes left.

But Lumeka was an upgrade on the man he replaced in Lee Chung-yong and came close to grabbing an equaliser before firing off target.

A low key debut for the 19-year-old who was given the final 10 minutes after replacing Idrissa Gueye.

An £8million arrival from Hajduk Split it would have taken something remarkable for the midfielder to change the game with the Toffees already looking well beaten while 3-0 down against Tottenham Hotspur.

Vlasic though was delighted to get on the Goodison Park pitch, telling evertontv: ‘There’s a lot of emotions. It was a very special moment for me.’

Can’t seem to escape a thrashing right now. His last game for Arsenal was a 4-0 defeat and his first for Liverpool was a 5-0 loss at Manchester City.

It was a thankless task though for the England midfielder who was introduced to the second half at the Etihad Stadium with his side 2-0 behind and down to 10 men.

Even so, the £35million star still had very little impact and will have to improve .

Ok, this isn’t strictly a league debut as having arrived at St James’ Park in the summer of 2016, Jesus Gamez featured five times in the side promoted from the Championship last term.

But the 32-year-old did make his Premier League debut at the Liberty Stadium and stood up strong to the Swansea attack that had targeted his flank.

The Spaniard isn’t a long term solution at left-back but did little wrong in the Toon’s 1-0 victory.

On scoreline alone, Hoedt looked like not cutting the mustard after lining up alongside Jack Stephens in a Southampton defence that lost 2-0 at home against Watford.

But with both goals long range strikes, there was little the £15million arrival from Alkmaar could do in a solid if only ordinary showing.

Stephens looked marginally the better of the two defenders but the 23-year-old deserves time to settle and could emerge as the front runner to partner Virgil van Dijk.

Having been picking up splinters on the Tottenham bench previously, Wimmer was thrown in the deep end in a full debut against Manchester United.

Lining up in a back-three the Potters star was often the spare man and his positional sense was lacking in the 2-2 draw at the Bet365 Stadium.

The Austria international though has shown he can play in the Premier League and a run in the side may still see Mark Hughes get the best out the £24million centre-back.

All eyes were on the star signing from Bayern Munich and the first five minutes were promising with a neat set of touches looking towards getting Swansea playing with a fast tempo.

But it was all downhill from there as the tricks were soon replaced by careless passes and a consistency only to give the ball away before being replaced by Wilfried Bony on 69 minutes.

Possibly still a little off match fitness, but Paul Clement will be wanting much more from his midfielder sooner rather than later.

Tony Pulis claimed the midfielder needs more time after signing on loan from the fringes of the Paris Saint-Germain first team.

The star of Poland’s march towards the European Championship quarter-finals failed to sparkle at Brighton as West Brom fell to a disappointing 3-1 defeat on the south coast

‘With Gregor, that’s his first game for a long time,’ Pulis said. ‘He’ll get better.I thought he done alright, but he’ll get better with game time.’

Given just over 33 minutes to make an impact after coming on as a second half substitute.

But the former Arsenal full-back was key in the Baggies’ consolation goal, with his cross played into the path for James Morrison to strike late on.

Like Krychowiak, the 27-year-old is still looking to get up to match fitness.
