Juventus set to battle Liverpool for Van Dijk
Show/hide article…
Juventus are ready to join the race for wantaway Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk .
The Dutchman is still keen to leave the club despite their refusal to sell him over the summer.
He submitted a transfer request amid interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City, but the Saints dug their heels in and told the 26-year-old he was going nowhere.
Their stance might have earned them respect from other clubs but they have been left with a player who no longer wants to play for them.
And he now hopes that his wish to leave will be granted when the transfer window reopens in January.
That has prompted interest from Italian giants Juve, who are still searching for Leonardo Bonucci’s replacement after their shock decision to let him join Serie A rivals AC Milan.
Juve will ask Southampton if a deal can be done to take Van Dijk to Turin at the turn of the year.
Liverpool retain an interest in the player, who they were confident was joining them earlier in the summer.
Their hopes of landing him were blocked, however, when it was alleged that Jurgen Klopp’s club had tapped up the defender.
Chelsea will also tell Southampton they are keen to sign Van Dijk if it is made clear he can leave in January.
