Juventus set to battle Liverpool for Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Juventus are ready to join the race for wantaway Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk .

The Dutchman is still keen to leave the club despite their refusal to sell him over the summer.

He submitted a transfer request amid interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City, but the Saints dug their heels in and told the 26-year-old he was going nowhere.

Their stance might have earned them respect from other clubs but they have been left with a player who no longer wants to play for them.

And he now hopes that his wish to leave will be granted when the transfer window reopens in January.

That has prompted interest from Italian giants Juve, who are still searching for Leonardo Bonucci’s replacement after their shock decision to let him join Serie A rivals AC Milan.

Juve will ask Southampton if a deal can be done to take Van Dijk to Turin at the turn of the year.

Liverpool retain an interest in the player, who they were confident was joining them earlier in the summer.

Their hopes of landing him were blocked, however, when it was alleged that Jurgen Klopp’s club had tapped up the defender.

Chelsea will also tell Southampton they are keen to sign Van Dijk if it is made clear he can leave in January.

Van Dijk to make his Saints comeback at Walsall

Show/hide article…

Virgil Van Dijk is set to play his first Saints game in eight months – at Walsall FC’s Bescot Stadium.

The Dutch defender will play against Aston Villa U23s in their Premier League 2 fixture against Martin Hunter’s side on Monday night.

It will be his first appearance for any Saints side since January 22, when he suffered an ankle injury in a clash with Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

After the 2-0 defeat to Watford, Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino revealed: “He’s gone a long period of time without playing a game and this is my concern right now.

“He will play Monday in the reserve (U23) team. We have to be ready to help him.

Van Dijk, 26, has returned to training since being denied a move from St Mary’s during the transfer window.

But Monday’s game gives him the opportunity to regain some much-needed match sharpness.

Pellegrino added: “He was training well this week and we hope everything is normal.”

Hoedt reflects on debut

Show/hide article…

WESLEY Hoedt was pleased to make his Saints debut in the 2-0 defeat to Watford at St Mary’s – but admits everyone must “look in the mirror” after a disappointing first loss of the campaign.

The central defender, who switched to Saints in a £15m deal from Lazio last month, was handed his first appearance, after Mauricio Pellegrino decided he was fresher than Maya Yoshida after international duties.

The Dutchman said: “It wasn’t good enough. We didn’t win the second ball and that’s why they won the game.

“I’m happy that I could play but it’s more important that we start winning.”

He added: “We should have done better but I think everybody, including me, has to look in the mirror and see what we can do better and start winning against Crystal Palace.”

The 23-year-old admits that Saints committed to too many long passes against the Hornets, who secured a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and substitute Daryl Janmaat.

It is a style that Pellegrino wants to wean Saints off, according to the Netherlands international.

He said: “It’s pretty clear what he wants. We need to get the ball down more and not play the long passes. That’s something we did wrong today.”

“I’ve been here only a few days but I think it’s really clear what we want to do, only we have to just do a way better performance than we did today,” he added.

Getting the ball down and playing is something Hoedt believes suits his game. The former AZ Alkmaar man demonstrated that he was composed and comfortable on the ball against Watford, despite the result.

He said: “For sure. I have to find my way in the team, so that’s something I can improve on but that’s my style of play and I can be important for this team. What we showed today was not good enough.”

So what did he make of the Premier League?

“It’s pretty much the same as the Italian league and also today they didn’t have a lot of chances but they scored two goals. That’s pretty similar to Italy,” he said.

Virgil van Dijk to make Southampton return on Monday

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has revealed Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk will play for the reserves on Monday as he continues to build up his match fitness.

The Holland international has been reintegrated into the senior squad having been training on his own after handing in a transfer request at the start of August.

Van Dijk, 26, had made it clear he wanted the club to take up the interest from Liverpool, who issued a public apology in June following suggestions of an improper approach for the centre-back.

He has been out of first-team action since sustaining a serious ankle injury on January 22 but will feature for Southampton’s second string against Aston Villa at the Bescot Stadium.

“Virgil is coming from a long period of time without playing a game. This is my concern right now,” said Pellegrino.

"He will play Monday in the reserve team. We try to help him to be ready to help the team.

“He was training well this week. Now everything is normal.”

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger had been adamant that Van Dijk was not for sale in the summer and said keeping the defender was “the statement we need to make”.

The club will be hoping the Dutchman can get up to speed quickly as debutant Wesley Hoedt, a compatriot of Van Dijk’s who was handed his chance at the heart of the Saints defence against Watford, endured a tough time against Andre Gray in the 2-0 home defeat to the Hornets.

“It is a message that at this moment, we don’t need to sell our best players, and we need to keep our best players to be more competitive,” Pellegrino, appointed in the summer following the sacking of Claude Puel, said earlier this week.

"It is a message from the owners, the board, our chairman and directors, it is really good.

“We are now in a situation where making a small step will be really difficult for us, and to achieve this, we had to keep our best players, to work with them and to build a team, that is the most difficult thing.”

There are lessons to be learned, says Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

The Hornets marked Pellegrino’s first Premier League defeat with a 2-0 win at St Mary’s, and the Argentine is keen to learn from the experience.

“Of course there are lessons to be learned,” he started.

“But we knew about what happened today before the game. There is a difference between the plan and the reality.

“In the reality they were, in some moments, better than us. They scored two goals and those types of goals change the mentality of the game.”

With the whole squad now back from the international break, Pellegrino will have the full week to work with his players ahead of next weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace.

And the Southampton boss wants to see a quick improvement.

“Hopefully we can change quickly,” he continued.

“We have another opportunity in seven days and we have to learn from today now and work harder to be prepared for next Saturday.”

It will be a challenging game, says Jaïdi

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters will travel to Bescot Stadium to take on Villa, who currently sit fourth in the Premier League 2 table – three points above Jaïdi’s men.

“They will be a strong, challenging team,” he started.

“So I am expecting a high-tempo game with a team that will challenge us physically all over the pitch: in 50/50s and one vs one situations.

“Obviously we have been working on all of those area in training this week and hopefully we will stand up to the challenge.”

Saints head into Monday’s match on the back of consecutive league defeats against Wolves and Blackburn Rovers.

And with a full squad to pick from, Jaïdi is confident his men can return to winning ways.

“We should have a full squad to pick from,” he continued.

“Most of the members of the squad are fit and available, so hopefully it will be the same set-up that we have been working with throughout the week.”
