Pellegrino: We have to take responsibility

Show/hide article…

Saints were beaten by two long-range strikes from Abdoulaye Doucouré and Daryl Janmaat, and Pellegrino felt his side were second best in the first half.

“I think they were better than us in the first half to the second balls,” he started.

“In every single challenge they were there a little bit before us, and from this point they created trouble for us.

“But not too much because we conceded two soft goals from long range. That is something we need to learn and improve from today.

“We improved in the second half and looked to create better opportunities, but not enough to find a way back into the match.”

Pellegrino made three changes for the visit of Watford to St Mary’s, with Maya Yoshida, Dušan Tadic and Mario Lemina left out following their international duty.

And whilst the Argentine accepted the impact of the international break on his players, he was keen not to use it as an excuse for the performance.

“It could be, but we have another three or four breaks in the future,” he continued.

“We know that the players will be away and have to travel and for this is the reason why I changed three players from the last game.

“I felt a little bit of low energy in some players but it is not an excuse. We have to take responsibility and improve for the next game.”

Southampton 0-2 Watford: Pellegrino- We were off the pace

Show/hide article…

SAINTS boss Mauricio Pellegrino admitted his side was off the pace during their 2-0 home defeat against Watford.

Pellegrino’s side suffered a repeat of the scoreline against Wolves when they last played at St Mary’s in the League Cup.

He said: “It was tough for everyone, especially in the first half. In our other games we created a lot of chances, this was our most difficult game so far.

“They were better at us at reacting to the second ball, they were always one second earlier than us.

“They scored two soft goals in my view, we have to try to avoid these and learn from it.

“It was a difficult game to analyse. We were much better in the second half but we have to improve.

“I felt we were a little low in energy from some of the players after the internationals.

“It’s not easy after long trips and flights following international competition.

“But we have to learn from this because we have another three international breaks.

“I’m obviously not happy with our performance, sometimes the opponent is better than you.

“Congratulations to Watford but we have to keep going and keep working.”

Watford’s Kiko Femenia was taken to hospital after limping off, but their manager Marco Silva was delighted with his side’s second away win in as many games, following their win at Bournemouth by the same scoreline three weeks ago.

He said: “We deserved the three points. We controlled the match and it’s not easy to do that at Southampton against a good team.

“They had a lot of possession but we controlled everything.”

Maurcio Pellegrino says Southampton must learn from Watford defeat

Show/hide article…

Maurcio Pellegrino insisted his Southampton players must learn from their 2-0 defeat to Watford at St Mary’s on Saturday.

The defeat was the third time in four outings since Pellegrino took charge that the side have drawn a blank.

“They were better in the first half especially with long balls and second balls,” said Pellegrino.

"Physically, they were fresher than us. They created enough to score. We have to learn from today. In the second half, we were much better but we couldn’t create.

"The game is 22 players to analyse not just 11. I will talk about my team and the other manager will talk about his. They had a lot of people behind the ball and it was difficult for us.

“It was tough. They were better than us in the first half.”

Saints went down to excellent long-range goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Daryl Janmaat in a poor performance in which they failed to register a meaningful shot on goal until full-back Alves Cedric’s stoppage-time drive.

“Southampton, for this reason, changed the manager,” said Pellegrino of his team’s woes in front of goal. "If not and everything is perfect then maybe Mauricio would not be here.

“It’s difficult to create chances and score goals but we have to keep going. We have some characteristics and quality and we can improve if we follow the dynamic of the last three games.”

Southampton 0-2 Watford: Saints’ struggles continue after long-range strikes in each half

Show/hide article…

SAINTS failed to score for the fourth time in five games during their second successive home defeat.

Long-range strikes in each half, from Abdoulaye Doucoure and substitute Daryl Janmaat, secured Watford a deserved 2-0 win.

Saints failed to test Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes with a shot on target until Cedric Soares’ effort was saved in injury time.

Doucoure drove in the first goal in the 38th-minute and Janmaat fired the 66th-minute second across goal, into the bottom right corner of Fraser Forster’s net, five minutes after coming on.

Saints were booed off at half-time.

Watford were by far the more threatening side during the first half but neither side managed a shot on target until Doucoure’s strike.

Tall, athletic and comfortable on the ball, Wesley Hoedt made his Premier League debut following his £15m move from Lazio.

But the first half was a stop-start affair with precious little in the way of incident for the most part.

Nathaniel Chalobah, a Saints target during the summer, was at the heart of Watford’s best moments.

On more than one occasion, Jack Stephens needed to be alert to cut out the rangy midfielder’s attempted through balls to Andre Gray.

On one of the few occasions that Saints threatened, Redmond’s attempted through ball was also cut out as the home side tried in vain to counter attack.

After receiving the ball in the centre circle, Redmond then turned Kiko Femenia and played in James Ward-Prowse, who started just behind Manolo Gabbiadini at the apex of Saints’ midfield diamond.

When Ward-Prowse found Gabbiadini inside the area, the Italian could not get a shot away.

Redmond swapped flanks with Boufal in a bid to try and attack Watford down the visitors’ left flank.

But Saints’ frustrations were clear for all to see as he remonstrated with Pellegrino while the manager attempted to get his point across from the technical area.

Saints continued to struggle for any fluency. Boufal’s pull-back failed to find a Saints player and referee Lee Probert had words with Cedric Soares after he gave away a foul.

When Boufal fouled Femenia, Saints were relieved to see it curl just wide of Fraser Forster’s left-hand upright.

Applause echoed around St Mary’s during the 22nd minute in tribute to Jamie Isherwood, a Northam stand season ticket holder who died of a heart attack recently.

Then, just when it looked as though the first half would finish goalless, Doucoure thumped in his 38th-minute half-volley.

His initial challenge deflected to the edge of the area and it sat up perfectly for him to thump a right-footer into the bottom left corner of Forster’s goal.

It was a sucker punch reminiscent of Etienne Capoue’s goal when Watford draw at St Mary’s on the opening day of last season.

Watford’s tails were up and they threatened to double their lead before the break.

Richarlison whipped a deflected 25-yarder into the sidenetting and Doucoure fired over after being teed up on the edge of the area following a good move down the left.

Desperate for an injection of creativity, Saints began the second half with Dusan Tadic on for Ward-Prowse.

Chalobah fired straight at Forster at the start of the second period but hopes were raised among the home supporters when Tadic’s trickery along the byline helped to find Ryan Bertrand, who won a corner.

Bertrand soon conceded a corner after a mix-up with Forster as he tried to shepherd the ball to his goalkeeper.

Boufal thumped the turf in frustration when his left-footer sailed into the stands from Bertrand’s pass.

Watford made a double substitution on the hour. Defender Younes Kaboul limped off to be replaced by Adrian Mariappa while Daryl Janmaat came on for Kiko Femenia.

Within five minutes, Janmaat doubled Watford’s lead from around 25 yards out.

The Dutch right-back’s spectacular strike into the bottom of the far corner was a welcome sight for the vocal Watford fans.

Gabbiadini, who played the last ten minutes of Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain last week, was taken off to be replaced by Long for the last 20 minutes.

A minute later Charlie Austin came on for Boufal, but still Saints failed to deliver a final ball of any quality.

They were fortunate not to concede more.

Liverpool News: Coutinho to snub Barcelona claim, Carragher on Van Dijk, Klopp criticised

Show/hide article…

Philippe Coutinho could snub Barcelona if they make another bid for the Liverpool star

Philippe Coutinho could snub Barcelona if they make another bid for the Liverpool ace in January.

The Reds refused to sell the playmaker this summer, despite the 25-year-old handing in a transfer request and Barca tabling three offers.

And Spanish transfer outlet Don Balon say Coutinho is annoyed by Barca not making a late move for him.

They even claim the Brazil international could snub Barca and stay at Anfield in protest.

Coutinho was left out of Liverpool’s squad that was hammered 5-0 by Manchester City today.

WATCH: Southampton 0-2 Watford

Show/hide article…

Daryl Janmaat and Abdoulaye Doucoure scored with long-range strikes as Watford comfortably beat Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s.

An energetic Watford stifled the life out of the hosts, who have now not scored in three of their four games under Mauricio Pellegrino this season.

Doucoure crashed home from 20 yards late in the first half after Saints failed to clear from a loose ball to go into the break with the advantage their dominance deserved.

Chances were few and far between in the second half with substitute Janmaat firing in a second from distance as Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster struggled to react.

Full-back Alves Cedric had Southampton’s only shot in anger of the game, firing straight at Heurelho Gomes in stoppage time.
