PAUL MERSON COLUMN: Coutinho will ask Liverpool for pay rise, Guardiola can outgun Klopp

Show/hide article…

All three of them failed to get the moves they wanted in the window, but that won’t be the end of the story. I find the Coutinho situation a strange one. Barcelona offered them a lot of money and he wanted to go, but Liverpool said no. The trouble is, if you’re valuing him that highly, you’re going to have to give him a new contract to reflect that. His agent will be knocking down their door demanding they give him more than £220,000 a week now. I’m not sure Barcelona will be back in for him. They very rarely get turned down and they don’t like it. His chance might have gone. How he reacts to that we don’t know yet. Besides, he has to get back in the Liverpool team first and they were outstanding against Arsenal without him. The last couple of seasons he’s been in and out for me anyway. When he’s hot, he’s hot. But when he’s cold, he’s very, very cold. I think he will be there until at least the end of the season now. If Barcelona don’t come back in for him, who else is going to offer that price?

Van Dijk is different. He left Celtic to join Southampton to prove himself in the Premier League and get a move to a bigger club. He will have known they are a selling club and that that’s what they do. They’ve sold everyone else. For them not to sell him is a bit hypocritical, a bit childish, in my opinion. I do feel sorry for him. He’s the one player who wanted to go that they didn’t sell. After everything that’s happened, it’s hard to see him coming back into the team easily. It’s gone too far. Liverpool should go back in for him in January because they need him. But Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City all needed centre-backs in the window too. There could be a lot of clubs in for him come January. If somebody puts a lot of money on the table, Southampton will have to sell. I just think it got petty because they didn’t want to sell to Liverpool after it all came out in public and because of the claims he was tapped up. But I still think that if anybody else had offered £60m or £70m before the window shut, they would have taken it. If there is a question about whether he will play and give 100 per cent for Saints again, you can pretty much guarantee Sanchez will at Arsenal. He’s just the kind of guy who will knuckle down and get on with it. Everyone knows he’ll be leaving at some point, he just has to wait.

He’s not signing a new contract, however much Arsene Wenger says he might. No chance. And he has a right to be unhappy after watching Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain get a move while he’s still stuck at Arsenal. But Manchester City won’t give up on him, and they could probably get him for £10m in January now, which would be an absolute bargain. Arsenal need to let Mesut Ozil go, too. He’s too expensive for what he does and he never influences the big games. You can get better for the price you’d have to pay in terms of his wages. Of all the players who didn’t get a move in the window, I feel the most sorry for Jonny Evans. He’s worked hard to get where he is and he had the chance to go to Arsenal or City, two big clubs, but for whatever reason it didn’t happen. At his age (29), he might not get another chance. MANCHESTER CITY against Liverpool today should be a game with bundles of goals in it – and I think the first team to miss will lose. Both teams have so much attacking talent but can’t defend to save their lives. They only know how to play one way, and will just try to outscore their opponent. All that probably means it will end up being a 0-0 draw, but I don’t think so. I think City will win because their defence is probably a little bit better than Jurgen Klopp’s.

Pep Guardiola keeps changing things around at the back for City. He switched two of his centre-halves against Everton and can’t seem to decide whether it’s a back three or four at the moment. But that’s the one part of the pitch you can’t just keep changing around. Those defenders need to know what they’re doing, what the system is. They need to get used to each other. The thing with City is that they have so many players going forward that if they ever get in trouble they can just throw the cavalry on. It’s frightening. City also ground out a result with 10 men against Everton and ground out a win at Bournemouth as well. But they need to beat Liverpool or questions will be asked.

U18 Report: Saints 1-2 Tottenham

Show/hide article…

First-half strikes from Reo Griffiths and Phoenix Patterson put the visitors ahead and despite a late strike from substitute Kornelius Hansen, they were able to hold on to all three points.

The visitors threatened early on as Griffiths wriggled clear in the area after just five minutes to fire a strike at goal, but it was straight at Alex Cull who parried the ball to safety.

Craig Fleming’s men responded immediately and down the other end Harlem Hale threaded through Jonathan Afolabi, but he too struck directly at the goalkeeper.

It was the visitors, however, that opened the scoring on 11 minutes. Griffiths burst through the Saints backline and fired a low drive from the edge of the area low into the bottom corner.

The lead was then doubled just before the half-hour mark. Matt Lock surged forward from right-back and played in Patterson who snuck his effort past Cull at his near post.

Despite the deficit, Saints continued to create chances and could have pulled one back ten minutes before the break.

Afolabi cut in from the left and teed up the on-rushing Will Smallbone at the edge of the area, but his effort was tipped onto the post by Tottenham ‘keeper Austin Brandon.

Saints should have pulled level just 10 minutes after the restart. Michael Obafemi burst into the left of the area and squared for Hale in space, but he struck high and wide of the Tottenham goal.

On 65 minutes Fleming made his first change of the afternoon, as Kornelius Hansen replaced Dan Bartlett.

The woodwork was then stuck twice within ten minutes. The first came from a Jake Vokins corner before Afolabi then saw his fierce effort from a tight angle bounce clear.

Spurs almost further extended their advantage in the closing stages. The two goalscorers combined as Patterson cut back for Griffiths in plenty of space, but he struck over from close range.

With just ten minutes remaining, Afolabi was again denied by the crossbar. The Irish striker showed great feet to work space before unleashing a thunderous effort from 25-yards, only to see it crash clear off the woodwork.

There was eventually a way through for the Saints youngsters. Good pressure from the front saw Christian Norton win back possession and square for fellow substitute Hansen inside the area, who calmly tucked in to pull one back.

But despite a late surge of pressure in search of a leveller, it was only to be a consolation as the visitors held on to secure all three points.

Pellegrino believes Saints can help England

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino admits if Saints do well this season it could benefit England at the World Cup next summer.

Ryan Bertrand was the only Saints player in the latest Three Lions squad, but there is a contingent of Englishman at the club who Pellegrino believes will be “fighting” for a place in Gareth Soutgate’s squad.

Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse were both handed their first England caps by Southgate – their former under-21s boss – earlier this year in a friendly defeat to Germany.

Neither of them made this latest squad and Fraser Forster, for the first time in more than a year, was also omitted from the roster, even though the national team boss picked four stoppers.

Pellegrino reckons that if Saints can do well in the Premier League, then that might well be a positive for England.

“This year, the World Cup is a big target for the majority of them,” he said. “They are fighting to be there.

“A lot of good English players are here and at Southampton we have to be focused on the job but them playing well could be good for England.”

Forster was snubbed by Southgate, with Joe Hart, Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford and Tom Heaton all selected ahead of the Saints man.

Pellegrino has urged Forster to learn from his omission and says if he continues to improve his form “will come back” in to the England set up.

“We have not talked about this situation but he has to learn from it,” he said. “In football, nothing is fixed. Everything changes all the time.

“In my opinion Fraser is one of the best keepers in the Premier League. I am lucky because he is still young to be a keeper, has good experience and can improve.

“He is always working hard to improve. I cannot talk about the decision of the England manager.

“I respect his point of view. For me the last game against Huddersfield he was really good. Just after the list was announced. He was really good. If he continues in this way he will come back.”

Pellegrino was pleased to see two of his players on international duty getting goals for their country, with Bertrand scoring for England against Malta and Mario Lemina netting for Gabon against Ivory Coast.

The 45-year-old was impressed with Lemina’s strike and reckons Saints have yet to see his best level, following £16m arrival from Juventus in the summer.

“I think he can play better because he needs to play more games,” he said. “He can help us with quality and can play in different positions.

“We did not have that type of player in the past and is good news when they play in the international games.”

Saints beaten by Watford

Show/hide article…

Abdoulaye Doucouré opened the scoring on 38 minutes with a low drive into the bottom corner, before substitute Daryl Janmaat then confirmed the victory just minutes after being introduced.

Mauricio Pellegrino made three changes to his side for the visit of Watford to St Mary’s.

Maya Yoshida, Dušan Tadić and Mario Lemina dropped to the bench as Wesley Hoedt made his Saints debut and Sofiane Boufal and James Ward-Prowse came into the starting eleven.

The visitors enjoyed the majority of the ball during the opening exchanges, but were unable to convert any of that possession into a meaningful chance.

At the other end some high-pressing saw Saints win the ball back in the final third and Boufal skipped down the left flank to deliver a low cross from the byline, though the delivery was just too far ahead of the onrushing Oriol Romeu at the edge of the box.

Watford continued to threaten going forward and on the other side Andre Gray worked enough space on the edge of the area to strike at goal, only to see his effort well blocked by Jack Stephens.

It was the visitors that eventually took the lead on 38 minutes. As the ball dropped 25-yards out, Doucouré was the first to react and he lashed a low strike past Fraser Forster and into the bottom left corner.

It could then well have been two just before the break. Gray again found enough space on the left of the area to fire at goal, but Forster was on hand to push the striker’s effort against the side netting.

Mauricio Pellegrino used the interval to make his first change of the afternoon, as Dušan Tadić was introduced in favour of James Ward-Prowse.

The substitute almost made an immediate impact as he threaded in Ryan Bertrand after a smart one-two, only for the right-back’s strike to be blocked and put behind for a corner.

Marco Silva then moved to make a double change, as Younés Kaboul and Kiko Femenía made way for Adrian Mariappa and Darly Janmaat.

It was the latter that soon put the visitors two ahead. On 65 minutes the Dutch defender hit a fierce 25-yard strike into Forster’s far corner to double Watford’s advantage.

Pellegrino then moved to make his final changes of the game, as Shane Long replaced Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin came on for Boufal.

Despite the attacking substitutions and a late long-range strike from Cedric, Saints were unable to find a way back into the game and Watford stood firm to secure all three points.

Premier League results: Arsenal, Brighton and Tottenham hit three, while Bournemouth’s struggle continues

Show/hide article…

Here’s what happened in the five 3pm kick offs in the Premier League…

Arsenal needed to bounce back from two consecutive league defeats and gave the Emirates faithful plenty to cheer about in the first half against the Cherries. A woeful defensive performance from Eddie Howe’s troops saw Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette give the Gunners the easiest of 2-0 leads at the break.

Welbeck got his second of the game five minutes into the second half to confirm the win for the north London outfit and heap further pressure on Howe, with his side without a single point on the board and only one goal to their name in the new campaign.

Pascal Gross scored Brighton’s first ever goal in the Premier League – and their first top flight goal in 34 years – to give the hosts a lead that West Brom may have felt undeserved. No one at the Amex could have argued against the final result, though, with Gross later adding a second and Tomer Hemed a third.

A late goal from James Morrison would have injected a few nerves into the home crowd, but while the Baggies did create more chances, there were few signs of a genuine comeback from the visitors.

It looked as though Tottenham would find three points difficult to seal at Goodison Park after an even beginning to the game, before Harry Kane miss-hit a cross to catch Jordan Pickford off-guard and open the scoring. Christian Eriksen doubled their lead close to half-time to confirm what would be a difficult afternoon for the Toffees.

And just seconds after the restart Kane latched onto a cross into the box from Ben Davies to secure a 3-0 victory and no doubt leave Ronald Koeman worried over the poor run of form his Everton side have hit.

Alvaro Morata is proving more than capable of filling Diego Costa’s boots. Leicester’s defenders marked the Spaniard well for much of the first half, but the striker finally got the better of Wes Morgan late on in the opening 45 minutes, heading in from close range to give Chelsea the lead.

N’Golo Kante was the unlikely goal scorer in the opening few minutes of the second period, and while a Jamie Vardy penalty suggested a comeback could be on for Leicester, the Blues were well worth the three points.

Southampton have been short on confidence in front of goal and predictably struggled against a Watford team whose defence has proved tough to break down this season. Watford were patient in opening the scoring, with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s 20-yard strike in the 38th minute the difference at the break.

The Saints failed to lift their game and only seconds after his introduction to the field, a 25-yard drive from Daryl Janmaat nestled in the bottom-left corner 66 minutes in and was all that was needed to seal the win. Mauricio Pellegrino’s men left the field at the final whistle to a chorus of boos and there will be plenty fearful of how their season could progress if their form doesn’t soon improve.

Mauricio Pellegrino tastes Premier League defeat for the first time as Watford sink Southampton

Show/hide article…

Long-range strikes from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Daryl Janmaat ended Southampton’s unbeaten start and lifted Watford into the top four.

The goals secured a 2-0 victory for the upwardly-mobile Hornets as Saints’ struggles in front of goal continued.

Doucoure pounced shortly before the break from outside the box and Janmaat hit a second-half cracker just four minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Meanwhile, shot-shy Southampton drew a blank for the third time in their four Premier League matches so far this season.

They have issues to address at the back, too, as there was again no Virgil van Dijk in the line-up.

The club captain is now building up his fitness after failing to get the move he wanted before deadline day, so fellow Dutch centre-back Wesley Hoedt was handed his debut.

The new boy was kept busy early on by the bustling Hornets striker Andre Gray, while Brazilian youngster Richarlison was proving a handful down the left.

Richarlison created the first decent opening, midway through the first half, when he evaded two defenders before seeing his shot deflected wide by Jack Stephens.

Neither goalkeeper had been forced into action until seven minutes before half-time when Southampton only half cleared a ball into their penalty area.

It fell to Doucoure 20 yards out and the French midfielder lashed a right-footed volley past Fraser Forster and into the bottom corner.

Forster did make a save moments later, at his near post to deny Richarlison, and Doucoure sidefooted narrowly over as Watford finished the half on top.

That led to boos from some of the Southampton faithful as their side trudged off - harsh given they were previously unbeaten, and it is only September.

They staged a brief revival after the interval but Sofiane Boufal sliced his shot over and Nathan Redmond hit the side-netting.

A Watford defence already hit by injuries was stretched further when Younes Kaboul and Kiko Femenia both limped off on the hour.

But rather than knocking the visitors out of their stride, the changes paid immediate dividends as one of the substitutes, Janmaat, expertly found the far corner from 25 yards out.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino sent on Shane Long and Charlie Austin in desperate search of a goal.

But the only cheers from the home crowd were the ironic ones which greeted Southampton’s first shot on target, from Cedric Soares, in stoppage time.

Southampton 0 Watford 2: Marco Silva’s sterling start continues as Hornets sting Saints at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

Two excellent strikes from distance, one either side of half-time, gave Watford a deserved victory as Marco Silva continued his impressive start with the Hornets. First Abdoulaye Doucoure, then Daryl Janmaat both capitalised on unconvincing Southampton clearances to score low from 25 yards as the Saints were again bereft of creativity.

“It’s clear to me we deserve the three points,” said Silva. “It’s not easy to come here to Southampton and control the match like we did. I’m really happy. I’m happy with the commitment and, like our players, enjoyed the match.”

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side took until the 92nd minute to register their first shot on target and loud boos greeted both half-time and full-time whistles.

Southampton 0-2 Watford: Abdoulaye Doucoure and Daryl Janmaat strike in Watford win

Show/hide article…

Watford ground out an industrial 2-0 win away at Southampton thanks to superb strikes from Abdoulaye Doucoure and substitute Daryl Janmaat to maintain coach Marco Silva’s unbeaten start to the season.

It took a driven volley from the French midfielder which skipped off the turf and beyond Fraser Forster to break the deadlock late in the first half (38), as Saints struggled to find any rhythm in the face of the visitors’ energetic pressing game.

Janmaat crashed in a finely-taken second (66) for the visitors with Forster perhaps slow to react to his low drive, as Southampton took until stoppage time to register a meaningful effort on Heurelho Gomes’ goal when Alves Cedric shot straight at the Brazil goalkeeper.

The result stretches Saints’ poor scoring form to eight blanks in their last nine games, as new boss Mauricio Pellegrino struggles to inspire his side after taking over from Claude Puel.

It was a game of little goalmouth activity with much of the first half characterized by the hosts looking to release full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Alves Cedric whilst Watford harried well out of possession.

The first chance came when Saints’ Sofiane Boufal made space for himself on the byline and pulled an inviting ball back into the box but there was no one in red to execute the finish.

Jose Holebas bent a free-kick past Forster’s post for the visitors on the half-hour mark, but it took a brilliant strike out of nothing from midfielder Doucoure to set Watford on their way, the 24-year-old whipping the ball past the Saints 'keeper from the edge of the box as Saints failed to clear.

Richarlison went close to making it two with a fierce near-post drive before half time, with Forster relieved to see the ball land in the side-netting.

Janmaat put the game beyond the insipid hosts with a lashed finish from 30 yards after a good first touch from Tom Cleverley’s header.

It was the third time in Pellegrino’s first four games in the St Mary’s dugout that his side have failed to score, with Cedric’s drive well held by Gomes doing little to alleviate the home fans’ concerns.

Mauricio Pellegrino: "They were better in the first half especially with long balls and second balls. Physically they were fresher than us. They created enough to score. We have to learn from today. In the second half, we were much better but we couldn’t create.

“The game is 22 players to analyse not just 11. I will talk about my team and the other manager will talk about his. They had a lot of people behind the ball and it was difficult for us.”

Marco Silva: "It’s not easy to come here and do what we did, to control the match and to play like we did. Very, very good game. I didn’t remember one chance for our opponent.

“Sometimes we can do something special like we did today. I’m really happy of course. I feel like my team played like they enjoyed the match. Three clean sheets in a row is very important to us it gives our team lots of confidence. I think we controlled these moments and we deserved three points.”

Stood up brilliantly to Oriel Romeu in the centre of midfield and was a controlling influence as Watford stifled the life out of their hosts.

Southampton play away at Crystal Palace next Saturday at 12.30pm whilst Watford host Man City on Saturday at 3pm.

Hoedt: We need to do much better

Show/hide article…

The Dutch defender started alongside Jack Stephens for the game at St Mary’s, where two long-range strikes from Abdoulaye Doucouré and Daryl Janmaat earned the visitors all three points.

“Unfortunately it was a bad start for all of us,” started Hoedt.

“I think we lost too many second balls. At that point they won the game and I think that is where it went wrong for us.

“We didn’t concede that much, only two shots on goal, but we need to do much better and improve. That’s the only thing we can do now. Stick together and improve.”

Whilst Hoedt was pleased to get his Saints career underway and admitted he has settled into the squad well, he also stressed the importance of getting back to winning ways.

“I think everybody needs to look in the mirror today,” he continued.

“Everybody needs to see what they did wrong and see where they can improve, that’s the most important thing.

“Then on Monday as a group we need to speak about it and keep moving forward and improving together.”

Southampton 0-2 Watford: Saints’ struggles continue after long-range strikes in each half

Show/hide article…

SAINTS failed to score for the fourth time in five games during their second successive home defeat.

Long-range strikes in each half, from Abdoulaye Doucoure and substitute Daryl Janmaat, secured Watford a deserved 2-0 win.

Saints failed to test Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes with a shot on target until Cedric Soares’ effort was saved in injury time.

Doucoure drove in the first goal in the 38th-minute and Janmaat fired the 66th-minute second across goal, into the bottom right corner of Fraser Forster’s net, five minutes after coming on.

Saints were booed off at half-time.

Watford were by far the more threatening side during the first half but neither side managed a shot on target until Doucoure’s strike.

Tall, athletic and comfortable on the ball, Wesley Hoedt made his Premier League debut following his £15m move from Lazio.

But the first half was a stop-start affair with precious little in the way of incident for the most part.

Nathaniel Chalobah, a Saints target during the summer, was at the heart of Watford’s best moments.

On more than one occasion, Jack Stephens needed to be alert to cut out the rangy midfielder’s attempted through balls to Andre Gray.

On one of the few occasions that Saints threatened, Redmond’s attempted through ball was also cut out as the home side tried in vain to counter attack.

After receiving the ball in the centre circle, Redmond then turned Kiko Femenia and played in James Ward-Prowse, who started just behind Manolo Gabbiadini at the apex of Saints’ midfield diamond.

When Ward-Prowse found Gabbiadini inside the area, the Italian could not get a shot away.

Redmond swapped flanks with Boufal in a bid to try and attack Watford down the visitors’ left flank.

But Saints’ frustrations were clear for all to see as he remonstrated with Pellegrino while the manager attempted to get his point across from the technical area.

Saints continued to struggle for any fluency. Boufal’s pull-back failed to find a Saints player and referee Lee Probert had words with Cedric Soares after he gave away a foul.

When Boufal fouled Femenia, Saints were relieved to see it curl just wide of Fraser Forster’s left-hand upright.

Applause echoed around St Mary’s during the 22nd minute in tribute to Jamie Isherwood, a Northam stand season ticket holder who died of a heart attack recently.

Then, just when it looked as though the first half would finish goalless, Doucoure thumped in his 38th-minute half-volley.

His initial challenge deflected to the edge of the area and it sat up perfectly for him to thump a right-footer into the bottom left corner of Forster’s goal.

It was a sucker punch reminiscent of Etienne Capoue’s goal when Watford draw at St Mary’s on the opening day of last season.

Watford’s tails were up and they threatened to double their lead before the break.

Richarlison whipped a deflected 25-yarder into the sidenetting and Doucoure fired over after being teed up on the edge of the area following a good move down the left.

Desperate for an injection of creativity, Saints began the second half with Dusan Tadic on for Ward-Prowse.

Chalobah fired straight at Forster at the start of the second period but hopes were raised among the home supporters when Tadic’s trickery along the byline helped to find Ryan Bertrand, who won a corner.

Bertrand soon conceded a corner after a mix-up with Forster as he tried to shepherd the ball to his goalkeeper.

Boufal thumped the turf in frustration when his left-footer sailed into the stands from Bertrand’s pass.

Watford made a double substitution on the hour. Defender Younes Kaboul limped off to be replaced by Adrian Mariappa while Daryl Janmaat came on for Kiko Femenia.

Within five minutes, Janmaat doubled Watford’s lead from around 25 yards out.

The Dutch right-back’s spectacular strike into the bottom of the far corner was a welcome sight for the vocal Watford fans.

Gabbiadini, who played the last ten minutes of Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain last week, was taken off to be replaced by Long for the last 20 minutes.

A minute later Charlie Austin came on for Boufal, but still Saints failed to deliver a final ball of any quality.

They were fortunate not to concede more.
