Southampton boss Puel wants assist king Tadic to up goal tally

Show/hide article…

Dusan Tadic provided his 24th Premier League assist in Southampton’s 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion and since joining in August 2014 only Cesc Fabregas (32), Mesut Ozil (30) and Christian Eriksen (26) have more.

But Claude Puel insists the Serbian playmaker can still improve and must score himself more often.

Tadic has found the net 14 times in the Premier League but only three times this season and the Southampton manager said: 'Dusan’s first part of the season was difficult, it was slow but he came back with spirit. He takes the play and gives a good assist. He gives all this quality on the pitch.

‘But we can improve. He can score often. He has good feet and he can try more in this position. It is important for him and us.’

Tadic laid the ball back for Jordy Clasie to hit a fine strike that decided the game at the Hawthorns and raise the prospect of an eighth-placed finish ahead of West Brom for his club.

‘I shouted to Dusan and the ball was good for my right foot,’ said Clasie. ‘I just hit it and it was a good goal.’

Southampton will also play an active role in the race for the title and top four with Manchester City up next and Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal to follow before the end of May.

Puel said: ‘We know the players of Man City, they are a good team. We drew against them earlier this season. It is important for us to keep the same intensity. The season is not finished.’

For Tony Pulis, this was a frustrating defeat with West Brom targeting a record points haul in the Premier League of 50.

Pulis’s side stay on 44 and ambitions will be aided if Salomon Rondon rediscovers his best form. He has not scored since netting a hat-trick against Swansea on December 14.

Pulis said: 'I can’t go into detail but there is something on his mind back home which he has to worry about. It is getting better for him which is good.

‘The supporters have been really good. They could have got really frustrated with him at times. But they have stuck with him. He just needs one to go in off the back of his head.’

Southampton boss Claude Puel reveals talks with Dusan Tadic before West Brom win

Show/hide article…

Jordy Clasie lived up to his name with a fabulous winning goal as the Saints moved within four points of the Baggies. And Tadic claimed another assist during an impressive display after peace broke out between him and boss Puel. Puel slapped down the Serb last month after Tadic complained about being substituted too often but the forward delivered on Saturday with his seventh assist of the season. In his three years in the Premier League, only Cesc Fabregas, Mesut Ozil and Christian Eriksen have more assists than Tadic.

“Dusan, like any great player, has to keep this good form regularly” “I think all the teams know the quality of Dusan,” said Puel. “Dusan, like any great player, has to keep this good form regularly. “In the first half of the season it was more difficult for him. “It is important with his quality and character to keep this level of performances. “He did well for his international team with a very good performance and now he tries to make the same thing with us.

“Dusan can do a very good second part of the season. “His first part was difficult, it was slow but he came back with spirit and his qualities for the team. “He makes the play simple and gives a good assist.” Clasie marked his first start in more than than two months with a fabulous strike from the edge of the penalty area to settle a low-key game. And victory keeps his side in the hunt to be the ‘best of the rest’ with West Brom having won just once in their last six games.

“Hopefully this will give us a lot of confidence for the end of the season,” said Clasie, 25. “We have seven or eight games left and they are four points in front of us. “Now we can look forward and hopefully we can catch them.” West Brom were second best for much of the game but they pushed hard for an equaliser in the final 20 minutes with England goalkeeper Fraser Forster twice coming to Saints rescue. He pulled off a superb save in stoppage time to deny Craig Dawson, then came up with another smart shot to keep out a scuffed shot from Jonny Evans.

Puel praises “improved” Dusan Tadic

Show/hide article…

SAINTS boss Claude Puel has praised Dusan Tadic for his outstanding recent form.

Within three weeks of complaining at being frequently substituted, Tadic has played back-to-back Premier League matches without being benched for the first time since the opening week of the season.

Tadic has played the full 90 minutes in just seven of his 27 Premier League appearances this season – including the first two games under Puel and the last two.

After seeing him help Saints to two vital wins in four days, including the assist for Jordy Clasie’s stunning winner at West Brom on Saturday, Puel admitted: “Dusan has had a very good second half of the season.

“The first half was difficult but he’s come back with very good character, quality and spirit.

"He works for the team, he takes on players and he can play it simple and give good assists.

“He has a good relationship with [Shane] Long, with [Manolo] Gabbiadini and is very important.

“I’m happy for Dusan, we know his quality and he has given it all on the pitch in this period.

"He’s improved since the beginning of the season, he’s improving all the time and his assists are important for the team.”

Puel has challenged Tadic to take inspiration from Jordy Clasie’s first Premier League goal and add to his three goals this season.

“He can score often, like Jordy he has good feet,” said Puel, who was also pleased to give game-time to a number academy graduates at the Hawthorns.

Jack Stephens continued to impress alongside Maya Yoshida at the heart of the Saints defence and Sam McQueen, Harrison Reed and Josh Sims all came off the bench.

“It’s the youngest team in the table and it’s important to continue this work,” continued Puel, who is reluctant to review his first season until the last seven matches have been played.

“It’s not finished, it’s not the moment to say whether it’s a good season or not. We wait until the end of the season, it’s important to keep the focus on climbing the table.”

Saints are very well placed to replace West Brom in the top eight after the 1-0 win at the Hawthorns.

Next up is the visit of Manchester City this Saturday. “I hope we can do a fantastic game against them,” added Puel. “It’s important for us to keep this good spirit and intensity and quality.”

THE VERDICT: 40 points but this season is nowhere near done for Saints

Show/hide article…

THERE it is, the magic 40-point mark.

It is the milestone that represents safety; a point at which a club are unlikely to be relegated and can safely start planning for Premier League football next season.

It is also the stage when players, with no significant target to hit before the end of the campaign, sometimes dust off the bucket and spade and think about their beach holidays in the summer.

This is no time, however, for Saints to down tools because they are just getting into a new groove.

After a positive week, Saints have now recorded back-to-back league wins for the third time this season and are on one of their best runs of the campaign, having beaten Crystal Palace and West Brom along with a home draw against AFC Bournemouth.

Saints have now won four of their last six games.

And the indication from Saturday’s 1-0 win at the Baggies is that they are not planning on taking their foot off the accelerator pedal, especially with Tony Pulis’ side in their sights.

Saints are four points behind Albion with two games in hand, although they still must play four of the top six in their final eight games.

Claude Puel’s side played some of their best football of the season at The Hawthorns, despite some very notable absentees.

You could have named an entire 11 missing through injury and suspension – with key men Virgil van Dijk, Manolo Gabbiadini, Steven Davis and Oriol Romeu all absent.

But the remaining men produced a display full of spirit and passion which has felt missing at times this term.

It seemed something has got the fire burning in the Saints bellies.

It’s unfortunate in many ways that momentum like this did not start earlier in the top-flight season.

After an almost empty March – with just two games to speak of – this past week has really stoked the fires of the campaign.

Yes, there’s no scrap for relegation and, no, there’s not a realistic chance of breaking into the Europa League spots.

But Saints can bypass the Baggies and that would be one hell of a finish considering all that has happened this season – from the Europa League campaign to the EFL Cup run.

It was one of the finest performances under Puel at West Brom, in what was a really meaningful game for both sides.

Saints knew they could blow the battle for eighth wide open with a victory and West Brom, who have seen their form go downhill since reaching the magic 40 points, had to prove they were still in the fight.

There were nerve-shredding moments at the back late on as Saints held on with their finger tips to bag victory, but those final throes did yield the best saves of Fraser Forster’s up and down campaign.

The towering goalkeeper has not been at his sharpest this season by any means, but the reaction saves to first deny Craig Dawson deep into stoppage time from point blank range and then to tip away Jonny Evans’ effort from a corner were simply world class.

Forster made a great early save too, denying James Morrison from a rasping low effort on 20 minutes as well as a full stretch save to tip away Salomon Rondon’s back post header from Nacer Chadli’s deep cross.

There was another brave moment to halt substitute James McClean’s sprint, as he slapped the ball away when it awkwardly bounced in the box.

Then, there was captain for the day, Maya Yoshida.

He was excellent alongside Jack Stephens and together the centre-back pair threw back most things West Brom gave to them.

Rondon, who was looking for his first goal in 16 league games, was left mightily frustrated, while returning creator Matt Phillips was also well shackled by the Saints defence.

In fact, Phillips, on his first start in nearly two months after recovering from a persistent hamstring injury, was restricted to just glimmers of his skills and was substituted just past the hour mark.

The Saints centre-back duo may have been slightly more exposed at points without the suspended Romeu, but that only allowed them to demonstrate further how far their partnership has come in Van Dijk’s absence and since Jose Fonte’s exit.

With Romeu banned and Davis injured it was down to peripheral duo Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Jordy Clasie to command the centre of the park in midfield.

There were many doubters over the pair’s credentials in the engine room of Saints’ 4-2-3-1 formation, but they were virtually faultless there.

With Puel recently calling all his men to score more, Clasie, on his first start in seven matches, answered his manager’s call on 25 minutes.

It was a well constructed move, with pantomime villain for the day Shane Long, who seemed to relish winding up his former club’s fans, making a direct run just inside the area.

The Irishman then passed to Dusan Tadic who, with his back to goal, held up the ball and rolled it out to Clasie.

The Dutchman lined it up and cracked a shot with his right foot which would be still travelling at the speed of a bullet train somewhere if it wasn’t for the net.

It was also another superb performance by Tadic, who is hitting new heights in form at the moment. The 28-year-old playmaker is often blighted by inconsistency and has been known for going missing during the winter months.

But, like some kind of Serbian spring flower, he’s blossoming in the latter stages of the campaign.

His assist on Saturday was his fifth of the league season and his fourth since early February.

Tadic nearly added to his three goals for the campaign late on, but his curling effort flew narrowly over the bar.

Nathan Redmond on the left is another man hitting his stride. He was full of scurrying runs and ideas. A real bright spark.

He also curled a couple of shots at goal, including one effort on the volley that was very well-taken from Cedric’s cross, but Ben Foster was equal to it.

Long meanwhile acted as the thorn in the side of West Brom, everything he did seemed to wind up The Hawthorns faithful more and more.

The 30-year-old, who spent three years at the Baggies between 2011-2014, won a penalty for Hull on his first game back as an opponent and has been disliked ever since.

But it only seemed to help Long in his usual role as nuisance-maker. He had buckets of energy, but as has been so often the case this term, the finishing touch was not present.

Puel praises midfield duo

Show/hide article…

Both players have had to bide their time in recent weeks, but they were called upon at the Hawthorns to replace the injured Steven Davis and suspended Oriol Romeu.

Each of them had quite an impact too, as Clasie scored the decisive goal, while Højbjerg turned in a committed display that helped set the tone in midfield.

“I am happy for Jordy, because like Pierre, he produced a fantastic game,” said Puel.

"It’s difficult without a lot of game time to have trust, to play, and to produce on the pitch this quality.

“It is well deserved for them, because they have stayed the whole time with the good spirit and good attitude, and they have worked strongly in the training sessions and we saw this on the pitch. It’s a good reward for them and the team.”

Southampton legend Le Tissier enjoys cup of tea in an Ali Dia mug

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier has done his best to try and cheer people up who are having a dire Monday morning by making a joke about famously getting substituted for Ali Dia when at Southampton.

Le Tissier took to Twitter to post a photo of his mug of tea, captioning the post: ‘Morning! No matter how bad you’re feeling this Monday I once got subbed for this bloke!’

In an episode that has gone down in football folklore, the then Southampton star was forced off with a calf injury early on in a match against Leeds in 1996, and manager Graeme Souness decided to replace him with Dia, who had earned a short-term contract with the club after claiming to be George Weah’s cousin.

It has now been over 20 years since Souness received a phone call from someone claiming to be Weah.

Weah was leading AC Milan’s attack at the time, a side which would go on to win the Serie A title. He had been named 1995 World Player of the Year, becoming the first African to receive the honour.

Meanwhile, Southampton were in the lower echelons of the Premier League and battling to retain their status in the top flight. And here was ‘Weah’, recommending a player called Dia, his cousin, to Souness because he believed he would help keep them safe in the Premier League.

Souness had been told by Dia, a striker, that he played with Weah at French giants Paris Saint-Germain and had scored for Senegal.

And subsequently, Souness signed Dia on a one-month deal and made his only appearance against Leeds, coming on as a substitute in the 32nd minute.

Le Tissier recalled the moment, saying: 'It’s actually me who comes off so that Ali Dia can come on.

‘It was unbelievable. He ran around the pitch like Bambi on ice. It was very, very embarrassing to watch.

‘Souness actually had to take him off again because he was actually that bad.’

Jones braced for final three games

Show/hide article…

Saints host Liverpool at St Mary’s tonight, following a four-week break since the 3-3 draw away to Manchester United in their last outing.

“It’s been a good mood ahead of this one,” explained Jones. “After a long break we want to get playing and back into the run of games, so we have been training hard and are now looking forward to it.

“We did well in the United game and should have won really, but we’ve taken the positives from that, regrouped and been working hard on things in training.”

During the break from Under-23s action, Claude Puel called 19-year-old Jones up to the first-team squad for the visit to Tottenham Hostpur.

Despite not being named in the matchday 18, Jones still reflects on the experience as being a positive one.

“It was an unbelievable experience,” he continued. “I learned a lot from being around the first team squad and seeing what they do in the build up to games.

“It’s good to get that little experience and hopefully I can take that with me through my journey now and continue to learn from them.”
