Loan Watch: Gazzaniga earns a point

Show/hide article…

Having beaten second-placed Girona 3-1 last time out to pull clear of the relegation zone, Rayo continued their impressive form with a point against the division’s third-placed team at the weekend.

Gazzaniga was beaten in the third minute, by Amath Diedhiou, but the hosts levelled midway through the first half, via Adri Embarba.

The result keeps Rayo in 16th position, three places and one point above the drop zone.

Back in England, there was also a 1-1 home draw for defender Jason McCarthy, who played the full game for Walsall against Oxford.

Andreas Makris had given the hosts the lead early in the second half, but Chris Maguire equalised with 16 minutes left to deny them a full complement of points.

Walsall, who visit Shrewsbury this Friday, are 14th in League One ahead of their final five games of the season.

In the Championship, Sam Gallagher couldn’t prevent Blackburn from falling deeper into relegation trouble, as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Barnsley.

Gallagher started on the bench at Ewood Park and was introduced in the 53rd minute, but, by then, the hosts were already two behind, after Marc Roberts and Marley Watkins netted for the Tykes in the opening ten minutes.

Rovers visit Forest this Friday, and are now four points adrift of safety ahead of their last five matches of the season.

Tony Pulis: Salomon Rondon drought down to personal issues not interest from China

Show/hide article…

West Bromwich Albion manager, Tony Pulis has delivered a staunch defence of misfiring Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon, repudiating suggestions that the player’s travails in front of goal are related to interest from China.

Rondon has not scored since registering a hat-trick against Swansea on 14th December, a drought encompassing 16 Premier League outings. In that time, Northern Ireland central defender, Gareth McAuley has drawn level with the forward as the club’s top scorer, with a modest tally of seven, prompting some supporters to question when the forward will score again.

The 27-year-old was industrious enough during Albion’s second home defeat of 2017 against Southampton but appeared shorn of confidence, particularly once a textbook header elicited a wonderful save from Fraser Forster in the first period.

And Pulis rejected more sinister accusations linking Rondon’s downturn to Albion’s refusal to sanction a £32 million transfer to Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian in January.

“No, I think there have been other things back home that have gone on. I can’t go into detail but there is something else on his mind which he has to worry about,” Pulis said.

Matteo Darmian says he is ready for more Manchester United starts after featuring against Sunderland

Show/hide article…

Matteo Darmian says he is ready for more Manchester United starts after featuring against Sunderland

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian says he is ready to give his all when called upon again by boss Jose Mourinho.

The 27-year-old made his first Premier league start since January when he returned from the cold to help steer United to a 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Sunday, as his side chase a top-four finish with eight games remaining and a game in hand on Manchester City in fourth.

With injuries depleting United’s options, Mourinho handed the Italian his 19th appearance of the season in all competitions and the full-back made sure to capitalise on the opportunity.

And, while the lack of game time has fuelled talk of a Serie A return, the Italy international’s main focus right now is firmly on ending the campaign strongly, both on an individual and collective level.

“I think I always work hard to be ready for when the manager gives me an opportunity,” Darmian said.

"I think I took it but I have to be focused and I have to work for it. And that’s it.

“When the manager gives me another opportunity, I have to be ready to help the team. The most important thing was the victory though.”

United strolled to a comfortable victory at Sunderland, who had Seb Larsson controversially sent off.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic put United 1-0 up on 30 minutes before Henrikh Mkhitaryan doubled his side’s advantage immediately after the break.

Marcus Rashford added a third with a minute remaining to round off a victory which moves United to within four points of a Champions League berth, while winning the Europa League offers another route.

Mourinho’s side resume Europa League campaign in Belgium on Thursday, when they face Anderlecht in the first leg of their quarter-final.

“I think it will be a difficult game for us,” Darmian added.

"We want to progress into the semi-finals so we now have to recover well and start about this game because I think it will be very difficult out there.

“We have to be concentrated and try to play with good intention and focus. We will try to win.”

How many goals have subs scored for your team in the Premier League?

Show/hide article…

How many goals have subs scored for your team in the Premier League?

Arsenal subs have scored more goals than any other club in the Premier league this season - but Burnley’s have netted the most match-winners.

Nine subs have scored for the Gunners this term, with Olivier Giroud grabbing a league-high five from the bench and Alex Iwobi, Lucas Perez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Granit Xhaka also scoring as substitutes.

Giroud moved one clear of Manchester City midfielder Nolito after sealing the Gunners’ 3-0 win over West Ham last Wednesday.

However, only two of those goals affected a result - Giroud’s 89th-minute equaliser at Manchester United in November and Perez’s stunning volley during a 3-3 draw at Bournemouth in January.

Tottenham’s Heung-Min Son and Everton’s Enner Valencia have both scored three goals as substitutes, but only Son boosted his side’s points tally - salvaging a draw at Manchester City in January.

Burnley top the league for points gained from goals scored by subs, with Ashley Barnes, Joey Barton and Sam Vokes all scoring match-winning goals to boost the Clarets’ season tally by six points.

Meanwhile, Hull, Swansea (both five points), Bournemouth, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United (all four points) have also benefited from goal-scoring subs.

In terms of the players, Swansea City’s Fernando Llorente and Hull’s Oumar Niasse have both scored three from the bench and individually earned their respective sides a league-high three extra points.

Llorente secured a 5-4 win over Crystal Palace in late November, scoring a late headed double from just 16 touches and 24 minutes on the pitch.

Niasse also scored twice as a sub against the Swans last month to secure a 2-1 win and three vital points in the battle against relegation.

Everton’s Ademola Lookman and Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure have made the most immediate impact after taking to the field in the 89th minute and scoring.

Lookman netted the Toffee’s fourth on his club debut during their 4-0 win over Manchester City in January, while Doucoure’s goal was unable to instigate a late comeback for the Hornets in a 4-3 defeat against Southampton last month.

Liverpool’s Brazilian duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both scored to reverse a one-goal deficit and claim a 2-1 win at Stoke on Saturday - the only time two substitutes have both scored for the same team so far this season.

A sub on both teams has scored on two occasions this term with Ashley Barnes and Connor Wickham finding the back of the net (Burnley v Crystal Palace) in November, as did Cesc Fabregas and Olivier Giroud (Chelsea v Arsenal) in February.

Ref Watch: Sebastian Larsson shouldn’t have been sent off, says Dermot Gallagher

Show/hide article…

Following another round of Premier League fixtures, Ref Watch returns to debate a number of the weekend’s controversial talking points.

Former top-flight official Dermot Gallagher has been in the Sky Sports News HQ studio to give his view on a number of incidents from the latest round of Premier League games.

Red cards, bad challenges and penalty shouts all feature in this week’s edition…

INCIDENT: Sunderland midfielder Sebastian Larsson was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Ander Herrera in the first half at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. Manchester United were 1-0 up at the time and went on to score two more. Sunderland have appealed against the decision.

DERMOT SAYS: I’m not convinced [it’s a red]. I don’t think Larsson has got the speed or intensity and he hasn’t gone flying through the air, so for me it’s a yellow card. What I will say is this has really split people, and if you showed it to 18 referees then nine would go red and nine would go yellow.

INCIDENT: In the closing stages of the goalless draw at the Riverside Stadium, Burnley defender Michael Keane appeared to slip and bring down Patrick Bamford while the Middlesbrough striker was through on goal, but Keane was only given a yellow card.

DERMOT SAYS: It’s all about the first touch, which is so good that Bamford is in control of the ball, and I think the referee has made a mistake in that he didn’t anticipate that and assumed the ball would run through to the goalkeeper. If he’d been allowed to stay on his feet he would have had a clear shot at goal, and it should have been a red card.

INCIDENT: Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn appeared to be brought down in the box by an Erik Pieters challenge, but no penalty was given and Stoke went on to score the opening goal of the game moments later.

DERMOT SAYS: I think if Charlie Adam wasn’t there then the referee would give a penalty. He is in front of Mike Dean and he doesn’t see the tackle as we do because he’s completely blocked off. I think [Pieters] can’t get to the ball and it’s a foul, but the referee can’t see it.

INCIDENT: Matt Phillips lunged in to foul Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie, but the West Brom midfielder was only given a booking by referee Chris Kavanagh - who was officiating his first top-flight game.

DERMOT SAYS: I think the fact that Phillips is low when arrives and doesn’t catch him makes it borderline, and I’d say the referee did make the right decision.

Form and fixtures make Yoshida bargain buy

Show/hide article…

A Jordy Clasie (£4.6m) strike was enough to earn Southampton a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion, with the Dutchman one of three players to share maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points at The Hawthorns.

Clasie also contributed eight recoveries and completed 84% of 64 attempted passes, helping him total 33 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

Saints centre-backs Maya Yoshida (£4.3m) and Jack Stephens (£4.1m) were the other two players to finish on 33 BPS, claiming three bonus points each.

Yoshida produced a huge 18 clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), while Stephens made 12 recoveries and 11 CBI, along with two successful tackles.

Dusan Tadic (£7.0m) provided the assist for Southampton’s winner and topped the ICT Index with a score of 11.6.

The playmaker recorded four shots, with two coming from close range, while also creating three chances.

For West Bromwich Albion, Salomon Rondon (£6.4m) led the way with an Index total of 10.5 after being recalled in place of Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.0m) in attack.

The forward produced six shots to finish with a Threat tally of 87 – the highest of Gameweek 32 ahead of this evening’s final match between Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Yoshida has produced an outstanding 27 points over the last three Gameweeks, returning two clean sheets, a goal and six bonus points.

Seemingly established as the leader in the Saints’ backline in the absence of Virgil van Dijk (£5.6m), the Japan international has started the last 12 matches and is a key budget option to cover Southampton’s eight matches over the remaining six Gameweeks.

Fellow centre-back Stephens offers an even cheaper option, but the greater goal threat offered by Yoshida is another deciding factor - he has six shots inside the box over the last eight Gameweeks compared with two for Stephens.

After being substituted before the hour-mark for the second successive match, there are growing concerns over Gareth McAuley’s (£5.3m) minutes for the season run-in for West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies have managed one clean sheet in their last eight, while the six-goal McAuley has failed to offer attacking returns in his last six outings.

With West Brom sitting out Gameweek 34, and fixtures against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City to come, McAuley is set to lose ownership ahead of the weekend, having enjoyed growth in nine of his last 10 Gameweeks.

Sportsmail experts pick their Premier League game of the season so far

Show/hide article…

It was not initially billed as a classic, but Everton versus Leicester City on Sunday turned into one of the most thrilling games of the Premier League season so far.

After Everton scored inside 30 seconds, the champions responded to go 2-1 up after 10 minutes. The Toffees turned it around, leading 3-2 at half time, before scoring once more to earn all three points.

A brilliant game, but the best in the Premier League so far this season? Here, Sportsmail’s reporters give their view on what has been their pick for game of the campaign…

Jose Mourinho’s much-anticipated first clash with Pep Guardiola in English football and the sense of occasion was matched by a frantic Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho put City ahead, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired United back into the game before half-time. Claudio Bravo’s penalty-box challenge on Wayne Rooney threw up some controversy, but City held on in a thoroughly entertaining game.

A thrilling midwinter fight-back by Arsenal in a game played at a breathless tempo and littered with defensive frailties and debatable decisions. In an age where the big games are over-hyped and every twist and turn is over-analysed here was a reminder that football’s imperfections are what make it so exciting.

Arsenal could not cope with the direct pace of Ryan Fraser as Bournemouth went 3-0 before the recovery began. A red card for Simon Francis boosted the visitors and Olivier Giroud equalised in the second minute of stoppage time.

It had a an elbow, a headstamp, an unjust sending-off, a Zlatan missed penalty, and a shock result with Eddie Howe’s team gaining a 1-1 draw with 10 men thanks to a goal from Josh King, who started his career at United. With some games, there isn’t enough to write about. With that one, there was too much to fit in.

The night the ‘snakes’ showed their venom. Clearly stung by criticism of their role in Claudio Ranieri’s sacking, Leicester’s players unleashed their full potential.

Liverpool arrived off a comprehensive win over Tottenham, Leicester on a run of five successive Premier League defeats, but Craig Shakespeare pressed the reset button and the home side were back to their breathless best, characterised by Jamie Vardy’s crunching tackle on Sadio Mane early on.

The King Power rocked like it did last season as Vardy then Drinkwater scored sizzling goals to put the home side 2-0 up. Vardy’s second after the break gave the scoreline a surreal feel. A strike by Philippe Coutinho even provided the edgy finish required of the best matches. Leicester’s 4-2 win over Manchester City was also electrifying but this will be the one remembered most from 2016-17.

What looked certain to be heading for an entirely predictable Liverpool win eventually turned into a match that summed up the total unpredictability of the Premier League.

Two-nil and then 3-1 up, Jurgen Klopp’s side were cruising. Inspired by substitute Ryan Fraser, the Cherries staged a breathtaking comeback scoring three goals in the final 14 minutes culminating in Nathan Ake’s winner in the third minute of injury time. It was a freezing day on the south coast, but the football was on fire.

I had the pleasure of being at Goodison Park and it is right up there with some of the games I have seen this season, as is Everton’s 2-1 win over Arsenal in December. It’s a fabulous stadium to cover football when the crowd is up and the tempo is fast.

The game I’ve enjoyed most of all, though, was Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool. The scoreline did not reflect the quality of the contest. Everyone who left the stadium that day agreed they had been treated to a spectacle.

Liverpool’s attacking talents matched with their defensive fragility make Jurgen Klopp’s team easy entertainers. This game showcased their good and bad sides but the real stars were Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth.

2-0 down at half-time, 3-1 with 15 minutes to play, they turned this wild game on its head with Ryan Fraser emerging from almost-unknown to match-winner and Nathan Ake grabbing their fourth in a 4-3 win. This was a game made brilliant by just how frantic and breathless it was - plus the seven goals.
