Jordy Clasie hails Fraser Forster after Southampton win at West Brom

Show/hide article…

Southampton match-winner Jordy Clasie has hailed team-mate Fraser Forster after the Saints’ 1-0 victory at West Brom.

Goalkeeper Forster preserved victory with two late saves from Craig Dawson and Jonny Evans at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Clasie had struck a first-half winner to settle a forgettable game which saw the Saints close the gap on the eighth-placed Baggies to four points.

Claude Puel’s side have two games in hand on Albion and strengthened their grip on a top-10 finish thanks to Forster’s late heroics.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Clasie. "The last two or three saves he made were incredible. They were so important for us, not only as defenders but the whole team.

“We have a 'keeper that can take points for us. I scored but I think you can give him the credit as well because he won us two points.”

Clasie marked his first league start since January, recalled due to Oriol Romeu’s suspension and Steven Davis’ injury, with his first Premier League goal.

He had not scored in any league since netting for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie in April 2015.

“It was a lovely feeling,” Classie added to the club’s official website.

"Every player wants to play in their career. You can have some difficult moments on the bench or not in the squad, and I’ve had those moments.

“Sometimes you need that little bit of luck and today was my chance, but the most important thing was to get all three points.”

Southampton’s Clasie hails ‘unbelievable’ Fraser Forster

Claude Puel’s side have two games in hand on Albion and strengthened their grip on a top 10 finish thanks to Forster’s late heroics, including a fine reaction stop from Dawson.

'The last two or three saves he made were incredible. They were so important for us, not only as defenders but the whole team.

‘Sometimes you need that little bit of luck and today was my chance, but the most important thing was to get all three points.’

Defeat was Albion’s second on the spin after a midweek 2-0 loss at Watford but boss Tony Pulis refused to blame his players.

He said: 'There are lots of areas I’m going to look at in the summer, there’s no way in a million years that I’m going to criticise this group of players. It was hot out there and in the last 20 to 25 minutes I thought they showed some great character by trying to push on and push forward.

‘We’re trying to win games and when it comes that way you do get they attack, we attack. We’re just trying to win games, I can’t fault the players.’

Classy Clasie strike keeps Southampton’s European hopes alive

Show/hide article…

Southampton kept alive their slender hopes of landing a European place with a hard-fought 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Dutch midfielder Jordy Clasie’s fine first half strike was enough to earn Saints only their second ever Premier League success at the Hawthorns. The victory crowned a satisfying week for manager Claude Puel following Wednesday’s 3-1 triumph at home to Crystal Palace.

No Virgil van Dijk, no Charlie Austin, no Manolo Gabbiadini, no Oriol Romeu, no Steven Davis … no problem for Southampton.

Despite being without many of their first-team regulars due to injury and suspension, Puel’s men showed they have the strength in depth to cope.

West Brom are always one of the league’s more challenging opponents, especially on their own patch, but Puel’s second string did the Frenchman and the club proud.

Shane Long’s goal drought continues and the Republic of Ireland international looks totally devoid of confidence.

7 – Finding a way to win without so many of his star performers was always going to be a test for Puel, but one he passed with flying colours.

Bringing on youngsters Sam McQueen and Josh Sims when West Brom were piling on the pressure in the second half was a brave move, but one which was ultimately rewarded as their fresh legs helped get Southampton over the line.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 9 – Has not been at his best in recent weeks but this was a much-improved performance, crowned by a hat trick of brilliant saves.

DF Cedric Soares, 7 – Did not get as many opportunities as he would have liked to push forward but made up for it with a disciplined defensive display.

DF Maya Yoshida, 7 – Handled the aerial threat of Salomon Rondon superbly. Justified Puel’s prematch billing as Southampton’s “Captain Fantastic”.

DF Jack Stephens, 8 – A really mature performance from the England Under-21 youngster, especially when West Brom launched long balls into the Southampton box in the second half.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 7 – The England man worked tirelessly to try and limit the flow of West Brom crosses into the penalty area.

MF Jordy Clasie, 8 – Asked to fill the void left by the suspended Oriol Romeu and responded with a superbly executed winner and an assured, all-round showing.

MF Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 7 – Given a rare start with Davis sidelined by injury and formed a good defensive barrier with Clasie in front of the back four.

MF James Ward-Prowse, 6 – Not able to influence the game as much as he has in recent matches but still put in a tremendous shift.

MF Nathan Redmond, 6 – Beavered away down the flank and looked lively at times before being taken off in the second half.

FW Shane Long, 6 – Going down too easily looking for a penalty when he was through on goal portrays a lack of belief.

MF Sam McQueen, 6 – Fresh legs were vital to the win. MF Josh Sims, 6 – Full of running after being called upon late on.
