Tadić’s Serbia confirm World Cup spot

Show/hide article…

With Group D finely poised before the evening’s fixtures kicked off, it was Dušan Tadić’s Serbia who emerged triumphant.

The midfielder played 90 minutes in Serbia’s 1-0 victory over Georgia, ensuring they topped the group and won an automatic spot on the bill of Russia 2018.

Elsewhere, Cardiff City Stadium played host to a nail-biter between home nations Wales and Republic of Ireland, with the latter prevailing in a tightly contested affair.

Saints striker Shane Long was forced to watch on - missing out with a hip injury sustained against Moldova - but a James McClean goal in the 57th minute ensured Martin O’Neill’s side overtook their Welsh counterparts in Group D standings.

Italy also concluded their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 away victory over Albania, where Saints’ Manolo Gabbiadini was a late second-half substitute.

Azzurri had already secured a play-off berth prior to tonight’s proceedings, and they will join Ireland in next Tuesday’s play-off draw in Zurich.

Mohamed Salah, Romelu Lukaku and more players who shone after rejection by Jose Mourinho

Show/hide article…

Mohamed Salah, Romelu Lukaku and more players who shone after rejection by Jose Mourinho

As Mohamed Salah prepares to face Jose Mourinho with Liverpool on Saturday, we pick out the best players the Portuguese manager originally deemed not good enough…

Mourinho has enjoyed success across Europe since steering Porto to the Champions League trophy in 2004, winning trophies at Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and now Manchester United, but the Special One has shown the door to a number of top-class players along the way.

Salah is one of them. The Egyptian was given minimal playing time by Mourinho during his spell at Chelsea before being sold permanently to Roma in 2016. At Anfield on Saturday, he will be eager to prove a point to the Manchester United manager.

From Romelu Lukaku to Filipe Luis, here are the top 10 players who went on to shine after being rejected by Mourinho.

Mourinho and Lukaku have been reunited to devastating effect this season, with the £75m striker spearheading Manchester United’s attack and scoring 11 goals in his first 10 appearances.

But it was a very different story three years ago, when Lukaku was forced to leave Mourinho’s Chelsea for Everton in search of regular playing time.

The Belgium was only given two appearances by Mourinho during his time at Stamford Bridge, but went on to score 87 goals in 166 appearances for Everton, persuading the Portuguese to come back in for him in the summer.

Manchester City needed to part with £54.5m to bring De Bruyne back to the Premier League, just one season after his permanent move to Wolfsburg from Chelsea under Mourinho.

Mourinho labelled De Bruyne “an upset kid” and criticised his efforts in training. Despite playing the midfielder in the first three Premier League games of Chelsea’s 2013-14 season, De Bruyne was sold for £18m to Wolfsburg in the same month.

De Bruyne registered 18 assists in the 2016-17 campaign for Pep Guardiola’s side, more than any other player in the top flight, and he has started the new campaign in similar style.

Juventus centre-back Bonucci was deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho at Inter Milan before going on to win six Serie A titles with Juve. Mourinho allowed the then 22-year-old to leave the San Siro in 2009 for a meagre £3.4m.

Bonucci, 30, was coveted by a number of top clubs this summer before eventually opting to join Juve’s Serie A rivals AC Milan.

Bertrand, 27, spent much of his early 20s on loan away from Stamford Bridge, but despite starting in Chelsea’s Champions League final win over Bayern Munich in 2012, Mourinho allowed the England left-back to leave permanently for Southampton in 2014.

Chelsea’s two-time Player of the Year, Mata, was soon usurped by Oscar after Mourinho’s return to the club at the end of the season. He then allowed the Spaniard to join rivals Manchester United in the following January transfer window.

Mata became an important figure for United, and that remains the case now that he is working with Mourinho again. The 29-year-old has started six of their first seven Premier League games this season, scoring his first goal of the campaign against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Mourinho allowed David Luiz to join Paris Saint-Germain in 2014 for a £50m fee just a month before a horror show in Brazil’s 7-1 defeat to Germany in the World Cup semi-final, justifying the then Chelsea manager’s decision.

Luiz has flourished since returning to the club under different management, though, and is now dubbed an Antonio Conte masterstroke following Chelsea’s Premier League title win in May.

Salah was signed by Chelsea under Mourinho’s watch but he was given few opportunities before being loaned out to Fiorentina and Roma.

He shone in Serie A, scoring 15 goals and claiming 11 assists last season at Roma and persuading Liverpool to pay £34m for his signature.

The Egyptian has made an impressive start at Anfield, too, scoring four goals and providing one assist in his first seven Premier League appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Southampton player was just 23 when he was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge for less than £6m under Mourinho in 2015, but has become a dominant midfield force at St Mary’s.

Andre Villas-Boas said Romeu had a “brilliant future” when he was unveiled at Stamford Bridge alongside Lukaku in 2011 after leaving Barcelona, and former Saints boss Claude Puel claimed the 25-year-old is “not far off” the level of PFA Player of the Year N’Golo Kante.

Allowed to leave Real Madrid under Mourinho at the age of 24, Argentina international Garay impressed at Benfica and earned a big-money move back to La Liga with Valencia in 2016.

The centre-back is a key player at the Mestalla and was touted as a possible Chelsea transfer target this summer, according to reports in Italy.

Filipe Luis was signed by Mourinho after his solid displays in Atletico Madrid’s La Liga-winning campaign in 2013-14, but only spent one season at Stamford Bridge before returning to his old side having made just 15 appearances for the Blues.

The Brazilian picked up where he left off at the Vicente Calderon, though, making 48 appearances for the Spanish side in the 2016-17 season as Atleti reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and once again boasted the best defensive record in the Spanish top flight ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

World Cup dream alive for Shane Long after McClean strike

Show/hide article…

The Saints striker was ruled out of last night’s winner takes all showdown between his Republic of Ireland and Wales in Cardiff due to a hip injury.

But the Irish claimed a play-off place thanks to James McClean scoring the only goal of the game in the 57th minute.

As a result, Martin O’Neill’s men became the first side to win on Welsh soil in four years.

Serbia, who included Saints midfielder Dusan Tadic in their side, defeated Georgia 1-0 to win the group and book an automatic trip to next summer’s finals in Russia.

Long, who had been aiming to end his 24-game goal drought prior to his injury, will now have to wait until next Tuesday to see who the Irish are paired with in the play-offs.

Two of his St Mary’s colleagues are also in the play-offs - Steven Davis with Northern Ireland and Manolo Gabbiadini with Italy.

Gabbiadini came on as a late sub - there was only a minute left when he was introduced - as Italy finished their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 win in Albania last night.

Tadic was taken off in the 89th minute as Serbia finished their campaign with victory.

Cédric in Swiss showdown

Show/hide article…

First up, Maya Yoshida and Japan host Haiti in a friendly, in Yokohama (11.30am BST), as they continue their early preparations for the 2018 World Cup.

Mario Lemina, whose Gabon side saw their hopes of reaching next summer’s tournament extinguished a few days ago, also have a friendly today, as they take on Benin, in France (3pm BST).

The qualifying action then begins from 5pm BST, when Jan Bednarek and Poland Under-21s visit their Lithuania counterparts, as they continue their campaign to seal a place in the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Poland drew 3-3 with Finland on Friday, and will hope to cut the gap on Group 3 leaders Denmark to just two points this evening.

The FIFA World Cup qualifying then starts from 7.45pm BST, with Cédric and Portugal in the game of the night, at home to Switzerland.

The winner will claim top spot in Group B and automatic qualification for Russia 2018, with the other nation heading into the play-offs.

For Portugal, only a win will do, as three points will see them leapfrog the Swiss on goal difference.

Wesley Hoedt and Virgil van Dijk could also be in action, as Netherlands host Sweden (7.45pm BST). The hopes of the Dutch are pretty much at an end, with only a 12-goal swing over their opponents enough to see them into a play-off.

Elsewhere, some of Saints’ youngsters could be in action, with Callum Watts and Wales Under-17s visiting Hungary in European Championship qualifying (1pm BST).

Sean Brennan and Kameron Ledwidge are also with Republic of Ireland Under-17s, as they host Azerbaijan in Euro qualifying (2pm BST).

‘Peacemaker’ Shelvey will wear cast against Saints after bust-up

Show/hide article…

JONJO Shelvey is expected to wear a cast against Saints this weekend – after breaking a finger in a training ground bust-up.

The Newcastle United midfielder fractured a finger bone after turning peacemaker during a heated exchange between Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame,

The punch up began when defender Jamaal Lascelles accused Diame of being ‘lazy’.

Shelvey, who has played three games since returning from a ban for his red card against Spurs on the season’s opening weekend, is being monitored ahead of Newcastle’s visit to St Mary’s on Sunday.

When asked about the Diame-Lascelles incident, Newcastle’s Spanish forward Ayoze Perez played down the bust-up.

“I’m not going to comment anything about that. It is something that happens with every English team,” Perez insisted.

“We have a great dressing room, a great spirit and that is nothing important. We are not going to comment on that.”

Shelvey, 25, has twice finished on the losing side at St Mary’s since scoring a late winner for Swansea City in February 2015.

Former Nottingham Forest defender Lascelles recently signed a new contract which keeps him at Newcastle until 2023.

Senegalese midfielder Mo Diame is in his second season with Newcastle following his move from Hull City 14 months ago.

l Gordon Strachan and the Scottish FA are expected to take some time to consider the Scotland manager’s future after their World Cup near-miss.

The former Saints manager’s contract expires next month following Scotland’s failure to reach the play-offs on goal difference after a 2-2 draw in Slovenia.

It is understood there was no debrief scheduled between the two parties in the immediate aftermath of the Ljubljana encounter.

A late Robert Snodgrass equaliser ensured Scotland remain unbeaten this year - a run which includes the final six matches of their qualifying group.

Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd believes Strachan will himself call time on his international reign.

“I think he will leave of his own accord,” the Kilmarnock player said. “The SFA would want him to stay, they will appreciate the job he has done, but the criticism Gordon received in the early part of the campaign, he won’t have forgotten about.

“He is the right man for the job, you only need to see the way it has been turned around.

“A lot of people say that at the start of the campaign he was a bit pig-headed and not wanting to change things, but that’s the way Gordon has been throughout his career and it has brought him success.”

‘Let’s make St Mary’s a fortress’: Ward-Prowse targets improved home form for Saints

Show/hide article…

JAMES Ward-Prowse is targeting improved home form as Saints look to catapult themselves back into contention for a top seven place and possible European football.

It has been an inconsistent start to the campaign for Saints, but coming out of the latest international break they have what looks to be a season-defining run of games.

Three of their next four matches are at St Mary’s against Newcastle, West Bromwich Albion and Burnley. The other game is a short trip down the south coast to face Brighton.

With seventh place wide open following Everton’s poor start, Saints should have as a good a chance as any to make that position their own - having been in and around it for the past three years.

But, with much harder fixtures on the horizon after this run, Saints are too aware of the need to garner points now.

“It is an important period,” said Ward-Prowse.

“We want to make St Mary’s a fortress and a place where we know we are either going to win the game or have a chance of winning the game, so those home games are important.

“We just need to keep plugging away at what we are doing and what we have been working on and keep belief in the players as to what we can go out and deliver.”

Saints fans don’t need reminding of the team’s incredible recent record in front of goal at St Mary’s.

They have failed to score in eight of their last nine home league games - and nine in the last 10 if you include a League Cup loss to Wolves.

“It’s a long long season, and the table is not going to stay as it is now seven games in,” Ward-Prowse added.

“It’s a long season and there will be ups and downs. Every season I have been a part of so far there has been good times and there’s been bad times.

“But the spirit of the players in the club means I’m sure we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

“The players, the manager, the infrastructure of the club, the facilities, it’s all geared around European football and we are desperate to get back there for sure.

“That’s the ambition of every player and the manager as well, so let’s go out and get it.”

Given that Saints have occupied finishing berths of sixth, seventh and eighth in recent years, they certainly have the form and Ward-Prowse added: “We have had a bit more experience of being in and around that position so we can take that into it.

“It’s important to beat the teams around you to stay above them but the Premier League has a lot of competition now so we have to make sure we are right and ready for whatever comes our way.”

Saints really need to try and get a run together, with Ward-Prowse acknowledging how vital that could be.

“In any sport it’s very important and if you can pick up a good result coming back after the international break that can really kickstart your season and get your confidence flowing around the players.

“We have proven last year that we can perform against the big teams and we can pick up results, so it’s not writing those games off at all.

“But we do have to make the most of our home form and make St Mary’s a fortress.”

Bilic most likely Premier League manager to be sacked - closely followed by a former Saints boss

Show/hide article…

SLAVEN BILIC is the most likely man to face the sack in the Premier League before the end of the season - closely followed by ex-Saint Ronald Koeman, according to Ladbrokes.

West Ham boss Bilic is 1/6 to leave his post between now and the final day of the campaign, while Everton manager Koeman and Leicester City’s Craig Shakespeare are 1/5 and 2/7 to face similar exits in the coming months.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino is 5/4 to have left St Mary’s before the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger is just 9/4 to turn from Gunner to goner although at 13/8, Antonio Conte is the most likely of the big six managers to face the chop.

And the bookies make Pep Guardiola the safest man right now, with 1/33 on offer for him to still be in charge at the Etihad on the last day of the season.

Republic of Ireland’s Shane Long ruled out against Wales with injury

Show/hide article…

Shane Long was ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s winner-takes-all World Cup qualifying clash with Wales after injury robbed manager Martin O’Neill of another striking option.

The Southampton frontman missed out with a hip problem, joining Jonathan Walters on the sidelines as he, Wes Hoolahan and Callum O’Dowda were replaced by Robbie Brady and James McClean, on their return from suspension, and Harry Arter.

Wales boss Chris Coleman made only one change to the side which won 1-0 in Georgia on Friday evening with Hal Robson-Kanu replacing Sam Vokes up front for the crunch Group D clash.
