Premier League owners - the billionaires in control of each top flight team

Show/hide article…

At least one Premier League could soon have a new owner after leading financier Amanda Staveley sounded out both Newcastle and Liverpool about potential takeovers.

The Mirror revealed this weekend that Staveley, who has strong links to billionaires in the Middle East, made initial soundings about the Liverpool’s availability while it is understood Newcastle are also a potential target.

But who actually owns each top flight club?

Here, we take you through the wealthy individuals in charge of English football’s biggest names.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment owns a number of American teams and franchises while Stan Kroenke himself is reportedly the ninth biggest land owner in the US. His collection of ranches alone totals 848,631 acres.

Forbes’ latest estimation has Kroenke’s wealth at £6.17billion, while his wife Ann is the heiress to the Walmart fortune.

Born in Russia, Demin made his money in petrochemicals trading. He has two properties in England but lives and works in Switzerland.

Little is known about his net worth but it is understood to be in the region of £100million.

Bloom made his money making poker and has gone on to invest in a series of other gambling, property and real estate businesses.

Garlick is one of the few British owners in the league. He made his money in management consultancy and has his own firm, Michael Bailey Associates.

Garlick owns 49.3 per cent of Burnley while John Banaszkiewicz, also British, owns 27.55 per cent.

Perhaps the most well knowns owner in British sport, Abramovich is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals having amassed a gigantic personal fortune from the oil, steel and mining industries in his native Russia.

In buying Chelsea for some $400million in 2003, Abramovich changed the landscape of English football forever and has gone to bankroll the greatest period of success in the club’s history.

Parish is the club’s chairman but all three own 18 per cent. Martin Long, Stephen Browett and Jeremy Hosking all own smaller shares in the club.

A vocal supporter of the club, Parish is a outspoken voice on all things Eagles and regularly converses with fans on social media.

Moshiri owns 49.9 per cent in Everton having sold his stake in Arsenal last year. Bill Kenwright and Jon Woods own smaller shares of the club.

Moshiri, who often works with Arsenal shareholder Usmanov, trained as an accountant when he was younger and previously worked for the likes of Deloitte and Ernst & Young.

Yorkshire born Hoyle made his fortune after founding Card Factory with his wife in 1997. At its peak, the business had more than 500 shops and employed more than 5,000 people.

A lifelong Huddersfield supporter, he became chairman and majority shareholder in June 2009.

The founder of CEO of King Power Duty Free, Srivaddhanaprabha bought Leicester in August 2010 following a three-year shirt sponsorship deal.

Now chairman with his son, Aiyawatt, vice-chairman he bankrolled the Foxes back into the Premier League and then oversaw the Foxes’ staggering 5000-1 title triumph in 2015/16.

A prolific sports franchise owner in the US, Henry and the Fenway Sports Group became household names on these shores when they took over Liverpool in 2011.

Fenway Sports Group have put a £1billion price tag on the club amid interest from Middle East investors led by financier Amanda Staveley.

If Abramovich changed Chelsea then Sheikh Mansour transformed Manchester City in all recognition. In buying them for £200million in 2008, he made City the richest club in English football history overnight.

As chairman of the Abu Dhabi United Group, Mansour has overseen a colossal spend which has seen some of the world’s finest players move to the Etihad.

After the collapse of the Magnier-McManus ownership, the Glazers first moved in to purchase shares in United in 2003 and after two years of manoeuvring finally established majority control in 2005.

Not at all popular with fans—some even broke away to form FC United of Manchester—their PR only got worse with numerous refinancing efforts with the club and its assets effectively used as collateral.

Malcolm Glazer died aged 85 in 2014 but his death didn’t cause any significant changes in how the club was run with sons Joel and Avram taking control as joint-chairmen.

A self-made billionaire Ashley made his fortune in the sportswear industry, specifically the Sports Direct franchise.

Ashley hit the headlines on the back pages when in 2007 he bought a 41 per cent share in Newcastle before going on to acquire a controlling stake when chairman Freddy Shepherd stepped down in 2007.

An intensely private person Ashley has come under fire for his perceived lack of ambition, his reticence to invest fully in the club and his refusal to engage with fans.

Jisheng bought an 80 per cent stake in Southampton earlier this year, ending the Liebherr’s reign at the club.

Katherine Liebherr inherited the club from her father in 2010 but sold all but 20 per cent of her share to Chinese businessman Jisheng in August.

The Coates family owns a number of businesses but their most famous and successful one is bookmaker Bet365.

The Coates family first owned Stoke City between 1989 and 1997 before selling to the Stoke Holding consortium. They bought the club back in 2006 and have owned it ever since.

The American consortium led by Kaplan and Levien took charge in 2016 after buying a 60 per cent stake for a reported £110million.

The Swansea Supporters Trust owns 21.1 per cent in the club.

Lewis was born to a poor family in east London in the 1930s. He left school aged 15 but rose to become Britain’s sixth wealthiest man (2016).

Lewis owns 70.6 per cent of Spurs while chairman Daniel Levy owns the remaining 29.4 per cent.

Italian businessman Giampaolo Pozzo owns Serie A club Udinese and fronted the takeover of Watford. It is his son Gino, however, that runs the Premier League club.

The family previously owned Spanish club Granada but sold that recently to Chinese investors.

Lai claims he has supported the Baggies since he was a child when they did a tour of the Far East.

After completing his takeover last year, he said: “I am excited and privileged to have the chance to become the new owner of this great club. My immediate priorities will be to maintain the club’s stable structure, respecting its well-run nature and its heritage. I have no intention of changing the club’s ethos."

Alongside partner in crime David Gold, Sullivan took control of West Ham in 2010 acquiring a 51.1 per cent stake in the club, with Karren Brady joining as vice-chairman.

Previously famous for his porn empire Sullivan has gone to negotiate the Hammers’ controversial switch to the Olympic Stadium from the start of the 2016 season.

Gold owns 35.1 per cent of the club.

Ireland’s Shane Long out for crucial Wales clash with hip injury

Show/hide article…

Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long has been ruled out of his side’s decisive World Cup qualifier against Wales with a hip injury.

Ireland can secure second spot in Group D and a play-off place with victory over Wales but will be without Southampton striker Long for the crucial clash.

Wales know they will also claim a place in the play-offs with victory ahead of the game at Cardiff City Stadium on Monday evening.

Both sides can still claim an automatic qualification spot as Group D winners but would need Serbia to slip up at home to Georgia.

Long has amassed 71 caps for Ireland throughout his international career, scoring 17 goals in the process.

The 30-year-old played 83 minutes of Ireland’s 2-0 win over Moldova on Friday but missed a series of chances as strike partner Daryl Murphy netted both goals.

Wales meanwhile will be without their talisman Gareth Bale after the Real Madrid star suffered a calf injury ahead of the international break.

Ireland blow as injury forces Long to miss Wales clash

Show/hide article…

The Republic of Ireland’s plans for their must-win World Cup qualifier against Wales were hit this morning when Shane Long was ruled out just hours before kick-off in Cardiff.

The Southampton striker played the bulk of the 2-0 win over Moldova on Friday and although he trained last night he has pulled out of the match due to a hip injury.

Long is one of the most experienced players in the Republic squad with 71 caps but has not scored in 25 games for club and country and missed three great chances against Moldova. His last goal was against Sunderland in February.

Martin O’Neill is likely to use Norwich’s attacking midfielder Wes Hoolahan in a more advanced role although Preston’s Sean Maguire could start after making his Republic debut when coming on as a substitute to replace Long three days ago.

Ireland will be out if they fail to win tonight but a draw could be good enough to keep Wales on track for a return to the World Cup finals after a 60-year absence.

“It’s as big as anything we’ve been involved in,” said Wales manager Chris Coleman. “We have to try to contain our excitement because we’ve always wanted to be in these games where everything is on it and all eyes on you and there’s so much to play for.

“Up until two years ago we hadn’t been anywhere near it and now we are, so we are looking forward to it. I’ve seen the other side more times than I’ve seen this side. That’s why I don’t have any fear. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Coleman is predicting a blood-and-thunder clash and it would be hard to argue with him given that memories of Neil Taylor’s leg-breaking challenge on Seamus Coleman during the bad-tempered 0-0 draw in Dublin in March are still fresh in the minds.

But the tactical battle could decide who is still planning for the World Cup at full-time tonight with a play-off the most likely route to Russia.

O’Neill’s men have scored in the first 10 minutes of four of their nine qualifiers, while Wales have kept clean sheets in their three straight victories before this game.

Wales will qualify automatically if they win and Serbia slip up against Georgia, and Coleman has challenged his squad to build on the progress they made in reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2016. Coleman said: “It’s a golden era, the players have proven its a golden era. They were labelled the golden bunch of players before we qualified for the Euros.

“I fought against that because they hadn’t earned that tag, but they’ve earned that now. We can’t be thinking that we’ve done really well, it’s gone, we have to keep doing what we’ve been doing and that will give us a great chance of it being a good night for us.”

Stars Harry Kane and Adam Lallana proof of Mauricio Pochettino’s impact

Show/hide article…

Of the past 30 England debutants, 12 have been managed by Mauricio Pochettino at either Southampton or Tottenham. Harry Winks, the latest, was named man-of-the-match in Sunday’s 1-0 win in Lithuania, crediting the Spurs manager afterwards.

Gareth Southgate has described Pochettino as England’s “secret weapon” and if the national team makes progress in next summer’s World Cup, Pochettino will deserve some of the credit.

So, who are Pochettino’s 12 and how important are they to the national team? ESPN FC ranked them in reverse order:

Now retired, Lambert’s international career was fleeting but heartening. The former factory worker scored with his first touch against Scotland in Aug. 2013 and was Roy Hodgson’s “big man” and Plan B for the 2014 World Cup, making one appearance from the bench in the defeat to Uruguay.

One of Pochettino’s successes in the goalscoring wing-forward role, Rodriguez’s solitary cap came in Nov. 2013 after his Southampton manager had turned him into a consistent Premier League scorer. He was a good bet for a place in the 2014 World Cup squad before a ruptured cruciate ligament ruled him out of the entire 2014-15 season. The forward, who joined WBA from Saints in the summer, has not been the same since.

Midfielder Mason is also unlikely to add to his solitary cap, earned against Italy in Mar. 2015, due to injury. Pochettino made Mason’s career by throwing him into the Tottenham first-team but he is a doubt to ever play again due a horror skull fracture suffered in January. If he does return to his very best, he has the quality to play for England, particularly given the dearth of options in midfield.

Forster was actually named in England squads before Pochettino arrived at Southampton but he didn’t win a cap until Nov. 2013. The goalkeeper did not feature in the last World Cup or Euro 2016, despite being named in the squads, and he is not guaranteed to go to Russia next summer.

Under Pochettino, Shaw was hailed as Ashley Cole’s successor at left-back but now, with Jose Mourinho as his club manager, he is behind Ryan Cresswell. The teenage Shaw was included ahead of Cole in the 2014 World Cup and he was the youngest player to feature at the tournament. A double leg fracture in Nov. 2015 halted his progress and he has hardly been used by Mourinho at Old Trafford. At 22, he still has plenty of time.

It says a lot about Pochettino’s ability to improve full-backs that Trippier won an England cap despite being Spurs’ second choice right-back. Kyle Walker’s exit has increased his chances of displacing his former teammate in the national team. For now, at least, he is well ahead of injury-hit Nathaniel Clyne, another Pochettino success story.

Is the 21-year-old the answer to England’s creativity problem? Winks has been carefully nurtured by Pochettino but has still only made four Premier League starts for Spurs. His call-up was as much a reflection of England’s faith in Pochettino as of Winks’ form but he has the qualities that have traditionally been missing from the national team’s midfield.

Dier is more useful to England as a holding midfielder than a defender and Southgate again has Pochettino to thank for that. Dier is England’s best bet to shield the defence and his versatility, encouraged by Pochettino, will prove a big plus when picking a squad for Russia.

When Pochettino joined Tottenham, the first thing he promised much-maligned left-back Rose was an England cap. His faith in the full-back helped him finally earn that in March 2016, and Pochettino may hold the key to Rose’s hopes of playing for England again in the foreseeable future. The manager must decide whether to select the in-disgrace defender when he returns to fitness, following his controversial outburst in August.

A huge Pochettino success story, Alli went from a £5 million signing from League One to a superstar under the manager’s guidance. He is yet to sparkle for England as he has done for Pochettino’s Tottenham but his relationship with Harry Kane and game-changing qualities hold the key to the national team’s hopes of success in Russia.

The lifeblood of England’s creativity, Lallana has underlined his importance to Southgate in the last week – by not playing. The injured Liverpool player, who also made his debut in Nov. 2015, went up a level after Pochettino joined Southampton, becoming the super-fit, tempo-setter he is today, and he is England’s best hope of unlocking stubborn defences and linking midfield and attack.

On this week’s evidence, England are on the way to becoming “the Harry Kane team”. Pochettino’s greatest success story is now England’s best player and the favourite to be Wayne Rooney’s permanent successor as captain. Kane has scored 12 times in 23 England appearances and he looks destined to challenge Rooney’s goal-scoring record.

Why Virgil Van Dijk will not join Liverpool in January

Show/hide article…

Virgil Van Dijk will stay at Southampton until the end of the season despite reports the defender will look to force through a move to Liverpool in January, according to Saints legend Matt Le Tissier.

Van Dijk looked set to move to Anfield for £60 million until Southampton accused the Reds of tapping him up, forcing them to abandon their attempts to sign the 26-year-old.

Jurgen Klopp could go back in for the former Celtic man when the transfer window reopens in January after failing to bring in any new centre-backs over the summer, but Le Tissier is confident that Van Dijk will remain at St Mary’s for the rest of the current campaign.

He told The Sun: "There doesn’t seem to be any problem between the rest of the players and himself.

"A football changing room is a funny place, you get forgiven for a lot very quickly as long as you are playing well.

“I could probably see him staying until the end of the season.”

Le Tissier, who scored 209 goals for the Saints in sixteen seasons, admitted that Van Dijk will almost certainly leave the club next summer though with a number of top clubs reportedly interested in signing him along with Liverpool .

He said: "It will be very difficult to hold onto him any longer than that, given what will probably happen in terms of bids coming in.

“Hopefully he can have a great season for us and help us climb the table first before he leaves.”

Van Dijk has suggested that he could yet depart St Mary’s in January after reintegrating himself into Southampton’s first team, but added that he will be fully committed to the club should they once again refuse to sell.

The Netherlands international made his first Premier League start of the season before the international break, conceding a penalty as the Saints were beaten 2-1 away at Stoke.

Shelvey to wear a cast against Saints after training ground bust-up

Show/hide article…

JONJO Shelvey is expected to wear a cast against Saints this weekend – after breaking a finger in a training ground bust-up.

The Newcastle United midfielder fractured a finger bone after turning peacemaker during a heated exchange between Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame.

According to the Newcastle Journal, the punch up began when defender Jamaal Lascelles accused Diame of being ‘lazy’.

Shelvey, who has played three games since returning from a ban for his red card against Spurs on the season’s opening weekend, is being monitored ahead of Newcastle’s visit to St Mary’s on Saturday.

When asked about the Diame-Lascelles incident by Sky Sports on Saturday, Newcastle’s Spanish forward Ayoze Perez played down the bust-up.

“I’m not going to comment anything about that. It is something that happens with every English team,” Perez insisted.

“We have a great dressing room, a great spirit and that is nothing important. We are not going to comment on that."

Shelvey, 25, has twice finished on the losing side at St Mary’s since scoring a late winner for Swansea City in February 2015.

Former Nottingham Forest defender Lascelles recently signed a new contract which keeps him at Newcastle until 2023.

Senegalese midfielder Mo Diame is in his second season with Newcastle following his move from Hull City 14 months ago.
