Premier League red cards: Are dismissals on the rise?

Show/hide article…

There have been 12 red cards in the Premier League this season - but are we seeing more dismissals than in previous years?

Three players were sent off during the opening weekend, while Sadio Mane and David Luiz have also been involved in high-profile dismissals.

So was the initial flurry of red cards due to a rush of season-opening enthusiasm, overzealous officiating, or do we have more dismissals than in previous seasons?

We checked data from 1992 to present day to find out…

So far this season there has been a red card in 17.1 per cent of games - that’s the 10th highest rate during the Premier League era.

That ratio stood at 30 per cent after matchday three, with nine reds from 30 games, which was a league-high ratio at the time - albeit at an early stage.

However, last season produced the fewest dismissals since 1993/94, with only 41 reds brandished (10.8 per cent of games).

The number of red cards soared during the 1994/95 campaign, rising from 28 (six per cent) the previous season to 67 (14.5 per cent).

There was another spike during the 1997/98 season, but the ratio of reds has remained fairly constant since - averaging at 63 per season (16.5 per cent).

Data available for the last four years reveals the majority of red cards are issued for second-yellow offences (84), followed by serious fouls (46), professional fouls (25), fighting (22) and handling on the line (six).

This season, Shelvey, Robson-Kanu and Arnautovic have contributed to an above-average proportion of red cards issued for ‘fighting’, which is a classification that includes violent conduct.

Since the start of 2014/15, only Liverpool have overturned a deficit with 10 men and claimed three points.

The Reds were trailing Crystal Palace 1-0 in March last year before James Milner diminished chances of a comeback further after receiving a second yellow in the 62nd minute.

But Roberto Firmino scored an equaliser 10 minutes after Milner’s dismissal and Christian Benteke converted a 96th-minute penalty to secure a 2-1 win.

There have been 70 games that were level when a red card was produced - but only three of those teams went on to win the game with 10 men: Tottenham against West Ham (August, 2014), Manchester City against Burnley (January, 2017) and Hull against Watford (April, 2017).

Fourteen of 38 teams that were winning before losing a player ended up dropping points by the full-time whistle.

So the impact of going down to 10 men is severe, but the level of severity depends on how long a team has to play with 10 men.

The graph below shows the average number of goals scored and conceded after receiving a red card - irrespective of goals scored beforehand.

We excluded games that produced more than one red card, or dismissals that resulted in a penalty being awarded and converted.

Unsurprisingly, a team is far more likely to preserve a scoreline if they receive a red card after the 60th minute.

A red card between the 61st and 80th minute has occurred on 36 occasions since August 2014, excluding games with more than one red card or dismissals resulting in a penalty.

Of those, the team reduced to 10 men have, on average, conceded 0.53 goals and scored 0.28 goals after the dismissal - a surprisingly fine margin.

In contrast, nine teams have received a red card within the first 20 minutes of a game - conceding 1.67 goals and scoring 0.44.

In total, 52 teams have received a red card between the 81st and 100th minute - and one in four have proceeded to concede a goal, on average.

Only two teams have scored after losing a player during that late interval: Liverpool against Arsenal in December 2014 and Swansea City against QPR in January 2015 - both teams salvaged a point.

West Ham have collected the most red cards since 2015/16 with 11 dismissals, followed by Watford (nine), Everton, Chelsea, Southampton (eight each) and Arsenal (seven).

So after a red card frenzy in August, not one red was produced during the most recent matchday and the ratio of dismissals has dropped to average levels - but will it stay there?

Crystal Palace and Southampton on alert as Barcelona put Paco Alcacer up for sale

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace and Southampton target Paco Alcacer has been told he can leave Barcelona in January.

The striker moved to the Nou Camp last summer for around £27m from Valencia, but he has failed to settle.

The 24-year-old netted just eight times last season and he has fallen further down the pecking order this term.

Alcacer has made just two league appearances so far this season and now, according to Diario Sport, Barca have told him he can leave in January.

That news will be music to the ears of Crystal Palace and Southampton, who tracked the Spaniard in the summer.

Both clubs are still in desperate need of a striker to give them more firepower and they may well now move for Alcacer when the window opens.

Premier League’s shortest and tallest combined XIs revealed

Show/hide article…

Gordon Strachan claimed Scotland have a genetic height deficiency after failing to qualify for the World Cup - but what would the shortest and tallest Premier League XIs look like?

The Scots missed out on a World Cup play-off spot after a 2-2 draw in Slovenia on Sunday and Strachan blamed a lack of height for his side’s failure to progress.

“Genetically we are behind,” Strachan said. “In the last campaign, we were the second smallest, apart from Spain. We had to pick a team to combat the height and strength at set-plays.”

In the Premier League, Jose Mourinho signed the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to boost Manchester United’s aerial presence, while other clubs have sought to acquire height in addition to pace.

But what would the shortest and tallest combined Premier League XIs look like? We’ve worked it out…

Tottenham reserve 'keeper Michel Vorm is the shortest stopper at 183cm, behind a centre-back pairing of Cesar Azpilicueta (178cm) and Nathan Ake (180cm).

Watford’s Kiko Femenia (176cm) slots in at right-back and West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell (176cm) completes the back four on the left.

N’Golo Kante may have won two successive league titles with Leicester and Chelsea, but the France international offers little in terms of aerial threat at 168cm and partners Swansea captain Leon Britton (also 168cm) in central midfield.

Bournemouth and Scotland international Ryan Fraser is the shortest player in the league at 163cm and occupies the left flank, while Everton winger Aaron Lennon slots into right midfield.

Up front, Jermain Defoe becomes the third Bournemouth player to make the starting XI at 171cm, partnering Leicester forward Ahmed Musa (171cm).

Southampton 'keeper Fraser Forster has had an impressive start to the Premier League season and the England reserve is also the tallest at 201cm.

Veteran Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker (198cm) forms a towering partnership with Liverpool’s Joel Matip (195cm), while Crystal Palace’s Martin Kelly (191cm) is the tallest left-back and Stoke’s Kurt Zouma (190cm), on loan from Chelsea, makes the XI at right-back.

Manchester United duo Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic provide aerial dominance in central midfield - with both players measuring 194cm tall.

West Ham’s new signing Marko Arnautovic claims a starting place in right midfield at 192cm, while his replacement at Stoke, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, starts on the left.

Fellow Stoke forward Peter Crouch is the first outfield name on the team-sheet at 201cm and leads the line alongside fellow aerial menace Zlatan Ibrahimovic (195cm) - who becomes the third Manchester United player to make the XI after re-signing for the club this summer.

Memorable day for youngsters on international duty

Show/hide article…

Jonathan Afolabi, Thomas O’Connor and Michael Obafemi were part of the Republic of Ireland Under-19 squad that qualified for the UEFA European Championship Elite Round, thanks to a 2-1 win over Serbia, in Waterford.

Afolabi, who scored twice in the 5-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday, started alongside O’Connor, while Obafemi was on the bench, as Ireland topped their group to advance to the elite stage as one of the top seeds.

The Saints trio will now hope that they can help their country go on to qualify for the 2019 finals.

It was also an afternoon to remember for another Southampton Under-18s player, as Sean Brennan scored for the Republic of Ireland Under-17s team in their 6-0 win over Azerbaijan in UEFA European Championship qualifying.

Brennan’s Saints teammate, Kameron Ledwidge also started for the Irish in their comprehensive victory.

Also in action in Under-17 European Championship qualifying was Under-16s squad member Callum Watts.

He started for Wales, who produced a good performance but were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Hungary.

GW8 Ones to watch: Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

The Scout is naming five players to target for Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 8.

The Dutch defender is back on the radar as an option for FPL managers.

Van Dijk was handed a first Premier League start for Southampton in Gameweek 7.

He failed to prevent a 2-1 defeat by Stoke City but, despite conceding a penalty which was missed by the Potters, he made an impressive return.

Van Dijk produced 14 clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI). It’s a key statistic in the Bonus Points System (BPS) and was double that of any team-mate.

He won a Gameweek-high 11 aerial duels and was a threat on the attack, recording three shots on goal.

The centre-back has shown his Fantasy potential since signing for Southampton ahead of 2015/16.

That was followed by a goal and 14 bonus points from only 21 starts in an injury-hit 2016/17.

The Southampton defence has been a key source of FPL talent.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men have been blessed with a favourable run of recent fixtures, a spell that continues over the month ahead.

Their next four opponents score just two in the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR).

That run begins with Newcastle United, who arrive at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday having scored once in three away trips.

Rafael Benitez’s attack will face a tough task breaking down a Southampton rearguard now reinforced by Van Dijk’s presence.

His height and heading ability will be difficult to contain at set-pieces.

The Magpies were exposed at a free-kick by Tomer Hemed’s (£5.0m) winning goal for Brighton & Hove Albion in Gameweek 6 and will be wary of the Saints’ threat.

Notably, Southampton have won 50 corners this season, only Manchester City (57) and Tottenham Hotspur (55) have had more.

Now with Van Dijk as a target, those deliveries could turn into much-needed goals.

For FPL managers the potential is clear: Van Dijk can steer Southampton to a sustained run of clean sheets, with the potential for bonus and attacking points along the way.
