Saints ace Long aims to end 1,000-minute goal drought and keep World Cup dream alive

Show/hide article…

SHANE Long will tonight attempt to end a worrying goal drought which stretches to well over 1,000 minutes.

The Saints striker last scored a competitive goal on February 11 - the final strike in a 4-0 win a fortnight before the League Cup final at Wembley.

Since then, he has gone 1,108 minutes for club and country without find the net - a total of 24 matches.

Nineteen of those games have been for Saints, though the club’s 2015/16 player of the season has only started six of them and only three times he has completed 90 minutes.

One of his rare starts was at Middlesbrough last May, where Long had a great chance to find the net but missed a penalty.

Tonight he bids to end that drought by helping the Republic of Ireland continue their World Cup dream at Wales’ expense.

Long and his Irish colleagues travel to Cardiff for their final group game, and it is a winner takes all clash.

Both countries could still win the group, though they need current leaders Serbia - featuring Long’s St Mary’s colleague Dusan Tadic - to come a copper at home to Georgia.

More realistically, the Irish will probably finish runners-up if they can win in Cardiff against a Welsh side still minus ex-Saint Gareth Bale through injury.

If the Irish fail to grab three points, their World Cup dream is over.

It was kept alive last Friday with a 2-0 win over Moldova in Dublin, where Long had several good attempts to end his long drought.

Long experienced a similar drought at the start of last season.

It took him until New Year’s Eve to net his first Saints goal of 2016/17, against West Bromwich.

A run of four goals in seven games in January and February included a famous last minute League Cup semi final second leg winner at Anfield.

But that purple patch stands out when it comes to looking at Long’s stats since the start of last season.

Remarkably for a player who scored 17 times for club and country in 2015/16, he has only scored six times in his last 61 competitive appearances for Saints and Ireland.

Long only started three out of Saints’ last 12 games of 2016/17 under Claude Puel.

This season, he has started just three more - with the most recent game at Stoke the first time he has completed 90 minutes under Mauricio Pellegrino.

Virgil Van Dijk: Southampton star still a top Liverpool transfer target

Show/hide article…

The Holland international has established a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs since joining Saints from Celtic in 2015.

And in January the first rumours about a potential switch to one of the top flight’s big boys started to emerge.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City were all credited with strong interest in getting Van Dijk on-board.

And an Anfield switch appeared to be a formality until the Reds were accused of tapping the 26-year-old defender up in June.

Long and Tadić chase World Cup spot

Show/hide article…

Shane Long has it all to play for in Group D of World Cup qualifying, as two of the home nations go toe-to-toe, with the prize of a place at Russia 2018 at stake.

Long’s Republic of Ireland face Wales tonight (7.45pm BST) with automatic World Cup qualification still possible after two Daryl Murphy goals sealed victory over Moldova last week.

The Irish can, in theory, still top Group D but would need to beat Wales tonight and hope leaders Serbia trip up against Georgia.

Long played 83 minutes last time out, and can help his side seal at least a play-off spot with victory in Cardiff this evening.

Sticking with Group D’s dramatic climax – despite a surprise defeat to already-eliminated Austria on Saturday, Dušan Tadić’s Serbia are still in pole position, and will qualify with a win over Georgia (7.45pm BST) in Belgrade tonight.

Elsewhere, in Group G, Spain cruised to victory over Albania on Friday to secure automatic qualification for the World Cup, leaving Manolo Gabbiadini and Italy with a play-off spot.

Italy drew 1-1 at home to Macedonia on Friday, with Gabbiadini an unused sub, but they can atone against Albania at the Loro Borici Stadium tonight (7.45pm BST), as they look to finish the group on a high.

Mauricio Pochettino’s remarkable record of producing England players

Show/hide article…

It’s come to something when fans of the England football team are relying on an Argentinian coach to make their national side succeed.

And yet, here we are. The basic facts show that England’s most important manager is not Gareth Southgate. It’s Mauricio Pochettino.

During his time in England, the current Tottenham boss has become known for putting his faith in young, English players. He did it when he was at Southampton and - as Spurs are all too happy to tell the world - he’s now doing it again in north London.

What may surprise you is just how important Pochettino’s guidance has been in transforming homegrown youngsters with potential into actual, proper international footballers.

Since the start of 2013/14, England debuts have been given to 29 different players . Incredibly, 11 of them were playing for Pochettino at the time… with another three (Nathaniel Clyne, James Ward-Prowse and Calum Chambers) making their international bow not long after a spell working under the Argentinian.

That means 14 of the 29 - virtually half - have been developed by Pochettino in some way.

Just take a look at the full list of those debutants…

So, England fans, if the national team DOES perform well in Russia next summer (hey… it COULD happen), you know who to thank: proud Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino.

What do you think they’ll make of that back in your homeland, Mauricio?

How did your Premier League players fare on international duty?

Show/hide article…

How did your Premier League players fare on international duty?

With World Cup Qualifiers nearing their conclusion, we look at how Premier League players got on during the international break.

There were plenty of international games taking place around the world, with some important goals scored alongside some significant injuries.

Here’s a round-up of how players from your Premier League team got on…

Aaron Ramsey played all 90 minutes as Wales secured a vital 1-0 victory in Georgia to keep their hopes of automatic qualification alive.

Alexis Sanchez scored a late winner in Chile’s 2-1 victory over Ecuador to move them up to third in the South America qualifying group.

Alex Iwobi’s winner ensured Nigeria booked their place at the 2018 World Cup, with the 21-year-old coming off the bench to secure a 1-0 win over Zambia.

Alexandre Lacazette started in France’s 1-0 win over Bulgaria but failed to find the net, while Olivier Giroud came on as late substitute.

Granit Xhaka did score in Switzerland’s 5-2 win over Hungary - probably one of the easiest goals he will ever score after an error from the goalkeeper.

Shkodran Mustafi limped off with what looked like a hamstring injury during Germany’s 5-1 victory over Azerbaijan.

Mohamed Elneny played the full game as Egypt secured their place in Russia thanks to Mohamed Salah’s 95th-minute penalty in a 2-1 win over Congo.

Josh King scored twice in Norway’s 8-0 win at San Marino, though the striker was later substituted after suffering a hamstring injury.

Asmir Begovic made several good saves and also chipped in with an assist as Bosnia-Herzegovina lost 4-3 to Belgium.

Tomer Hemed led the line for Israel as they won 1-0 in Liechtenstein, though the nation’s hopes of reaching the World Cup are long over.

Shane Duffy assisted Daryl Murphy’s early goal and played all 90 minutes as the Republic of Ireland beat Moldova 2-0 to keep their hopes of qualification alive.

Chris Wood scored in the second half but could not prevent New Zealand from falling to a 2-1 friendly defeat away at Japan.

Sam Vokes got the nod ahead of Hal Robson-Kanu to start for Wales in their 1-0 win over Georgia, and he was substituted for the West Brom striker after 74 minutes.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson got the ball rolling with Iceland’s first goal in an impressive 3-0 win in Turkey. They just need to beat Kosovo at home in the final game to qualify for their first World Cup.

Stephen Ward crossed in for Daryl Murphy’s second goal as the Republic of Ireland secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Moldova. Jeff Hendrick also played all 90 minutes.

Gary Cahill played all 90 minutes in England’s 1-0 win over Slovenia, which booked their spot in Russia next year.

Davide Zappacosta started for Italy against Macedonia but their 1-1 draw meant they must settle for a play-off spot after Spain confirmed their place in Russia.

N’Golo Kante suffered a hamstring injury in France’s World Cup Qualifier against Bulgaria. He was replaced by Adrien Rabiot after only 33 minutes.

Michy Batshuayi scored in Belgium’s 4-3 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina while Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois both started. Victor Moses played a part in setting up Alex Iwobi to score the goal that secured Nigeria’s World Cup spot.

Andreas Christensen started in Denmark’s 1-1 draw at Romania, as they booked their spot in November’s play-offs.

Antonio Rudiger came off the bench and scored as Germany completed their 100 per cent record in Group C with a 5-1 win over Azerbaijan.

James McArthur played the final 15 minutes of Scotland’s crucial 1-0 win over Slovakia at Hampden Park. He then started in Slovenia and claimed an assist, but their 2-2 draw ended hopes of World Cup qualification.

Wayne Hennessey kept a clean sheet in Georgia as Wales ran out 1-0 winners to maintain their hopes of finishing top of Group D.

Luka Milivojevic scored for Serbia against Austria, but it was not enough to avoid a 3-2 defeat - their first of the campaign.

Michael Keane came on in the dying minutes of England’s 1-0 win over Slovenia at Wembley, and then started three days later in the 1-0 win in Lithuania. Jordan Pickford was an unused sub in both games.

Ashley Williams captained Wales to a 1-0 victory in Georgia to keep their hopes of topping Group D alive. Muhamed Besic also started as Bosnia-Herzegovina were beaten 4-3 by Belgium, for who Kevin Mirallas did not feature.

Gylfi Sigurdsson played all 90 minutes as Iceland’s 3-0 win in Turkey put them a victory away from securing a spot in their first World Cup.

Aaron Mooy started as Australia drew 1-1 in Syria in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off. Zanka and Jonas Lossl did not feature in Denmark’s win over Montenegro.

Kasper Schmeichel kept a clean sheet as second-place Denmark beat Montenegro 1-0, while he played once more in the 1-1 draw against Romania which booked their place in the play-offs.

Andy King played all 90 minutes as Wales won 1-0 in Georgia to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup automatically. Daniel Amartey captained Ghana in their goalless draw with Uganda and Aleksandar Dragovic started as Austria beat Serbia 3-2.

Daniel Sturridge was an unused substitute on Thursday, but came on for 18 minutes in the 1-0 win in Lithuania on Sunday, while Henderson started and played 90 minutes again on Sunday. The Ox was an unused sub in Vilnius.

He won’t be a Liverpool player until next summer, but Guinea’s Naby Keita scored a neat goal but was later sent off for lashing out at an opponent as he captained his side to a 4-1 defeat by Tunisia on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah’s double, including a stoppage-time penalty, gave Egypt a dramatic 2-1 win over Congo and a place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Andrew Robertson was a lively outlet for Scotland in their dramatic 1-0 win over Slovakia on Thursday. He started once more in their 2-2 draw in Slovenia which ultimately ended their World Cup dream.

Ben Woodburn made a late appearance off the bench for Wales in their 1-0 win at Georgia.

Emre Can came off the bench for Germany as the Group C winners ran out 3-1 winners over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park. He then scored a screamer during his country’s 5-1 win against Azerbaijan.

Jesse Lingard came off the bench in the 64th minute at Wembley, and played nine minutes in Vilnius, while Chris Smalling was an unused substitute for both games.

Despite not featuring much for Manchester United, Victor Lindelof started for Sweden and kept a clean sheet in an 8-0 win over Luxembourg. Daley Blind also played for Netherlands as they beat Belarus.

Nemanja Matic levelled matters for Serbia in Austria but a late Louis Schaub goal handed the hosts all three points in a 3-2 win. In turn, Serbia failed to guarantee a spot in Russia, though a win at home to Georgia on Tuesday would confirm their place.

David de Gea kept a clean sheet in Spain’s 3-0 victory at home to Albania, which in turn confirmed Spain’s place in Russia next year.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan skippered Armenia to a 6-1 defeat against Poland before scoring their only goal in a 1-1 draw in Kazakhstan.

Matteo Darmian played all 90 minutes as Italy could only draw 1-1 at home to Macedonia, which meant they must settle for a play-off spot after Spain secured first.

Steven Davis captained Northern Ireland to a 3-1 defeat against Group C winners Germany and Virgil van Dijk was named in the starting XI as Netherlands won 3-1 in Belarus.

Davis skippered Northern Ireland again as they lost 1-0 in Norway on Sunday night, with Michael O’Neill’s side now facing the prospect of a play-off tie.

Shane Long out of Republic of Ireland’s clash with Wales in Group D of World Cup Qualifiers

Shane Long has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup Qualifier with Wales due to a hip injury, Sky sources understand.

The news comes as a serious blow for the Republic, who must beat Wales in Monday night’s Group D clash, live on Sky Sports, in order to reach the play-offs for the finals in Russia.

Irish boss Martin O’Neill could now opt to start Daryl Murphy against Wales after the Nottingham Forest striker scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Moldova on Friday night.

O’Neill is already without Burnley striker Jon Walters, who has been missing with a knee injury, but has Preston forward Sean Maguire, who made his international debut against Moldova, and Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan as options.

A win for either team will guarantee a November play-off at their opponents’ expense and could yield an automatic qualifying spot if Group D leaders Serbia falter in their last game at home to Georgia.

For Wales, a draw at Cardiff City Stadium would be enough to finish above Ireland in the table - but not necessarily enough to nail a play-off place, with Croatia also in contention.

Saints ace Long ruled out of must-win World Cup qualifier

Show/hide article…

SHANE Long has been ruled out of Republic of Ireland’s must-win World Cup qualifier against Wales with a hip injury.

The Saints striker was hoping to end his barren run by helping the Republic of Ireland continue their World Cup dream at Wales’ expense, by winning their final group game.

But the injury has prevented him from playing in his side’s the winner-takes-all clash in Cardiff.

The Irish will probably finish runners-up if they can win in Cardiff against a Welsh side still minus ex-Saint Gareth Bale through injury.

Long last scored a competitive goal on February 11, a fortnight before the League Cup final.

Both countries could still win the group, though they need current leaders Serbia - featuring Long’s St Mary’s colleague Dusan Tadic - to come a copper at home to Georgia.
