Cedric’s Portugal prevail in Andorra

Show/hide article…

The second-half arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo was the catalyst for the European champions as the Real Madrid forward scored one and set up another for AC Milan’s Andre Silva.

Meanwhile, Group B leaders Switzerland maintained their perfect record, a 5-1 thrashing of Hungary their ninth consecutive victory in qualifying.

The Portuguese take on the Swiss next week in Lisbon and a win for Cedric and co. would see them claim top spot on goal difference.

Disappointment for Lemina and Gabon

Show/hide article…

The Southampton man played the full 90 minutes at the base of the visitors’ three-man midfield in a game that saw Gabon’s chances of reaching next summer’s finals come to an end.

Yeni Malatyaspor’s Khalid Boutaïb was the star of the night, the striker netting a hat-trick to send Morocco to the top of CAF qualifying Group B at the expense of Côte d’Ivoire.

Lemina and co. will look to end their campaign on a high when they host bottom side Mali next month.

READER LETTER: It’s a pity more Saints players aren’t like Rickie Lambert

Show/hide article…

HAVING just read that Virgil van Dijk has mentioned that he may push for a move in January, it occurred to me that this was probably always the plan, especially if Southampton agree to let him go.

This result would no doubt appease the fans and Van Dijk as well, unless Southampton football club decide otherwise.

Rickie Lambert has just retired from football and affectionately regards Saints as the best club he ever played for.

I have been a Saints fan for 51 years and in my opinion he must go down as one of the most honest, dedicated and talented strikers Saints have ever had.

It’s such a pity that not all players are cast from the same mould as him.

Davis aims to seal play-off spot

Show/hide article…

With second place in their group already secured, Steven Davis and Northern Ireland will be hoping to seal a World Cup play-off spot today.

Davis captained his national side during their 3-1 defeat to world champions Germany this week – their first loss in a competitive home match since September 2013 – but will be hoping to finish on a high against Norway, in Oslo (7.45pm BST).

The Irish are guaranteed second place in Group C of the European qualification section, and look on course to finish as one of the eight best runners-up from the nine groups, which would ensure they enter the play-offs.

Elsewhere, Ryan Bertrand, who helped England seal qualification for the World Cup with a win against Slovenia on Thursday evening, will be hoping to help the Three Lions preserve their unbeaten qualifying record away to Lithuania (5pm BST), with Saints keeper Fraser Forster also part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the game.

Virgil Van Dijk won’t solve Liverpool’s defensive issues - Phil Thompson

Show/hide article…

He believes the Dutchman is not vocal enough to single-handedly improve the Reds’ defence by the required amount.

Thompson also claims that none of Klopp’s rearguard signings are good enough for the Premier League’s other top sides.

“He [Klopp] has brought players in for the defensive positions but while they’re good players, none of them are great players who you’d say would make it into the other top five sides,” Thompson said in his Sky Sports column.

"I think that tells you where we are at with our defence at the moment, so I think that is going to continue to until he is really able to address it.

"I don’t believe the Virgil van Dijk signing alone would have solved our problems.

Shane Long hopes to end 25-game goal drought with winner vs Wales

Show/hide article…

Shane Long didn’t know whether to laugh or cry as his goal drought extended to 25 games for club and country on Friday night.

But he knows all that will be forgotten if he nets the goal in Cardiff that gets Ireland to the World Cup - or at least into the play-offs.

Long had three great chances against Moldova to break his extended duck, but all three went a-begging. The 30-year-old’s frustration was clear from his reaction to the third miss.

“You’ve just got to keep believing,” said Long. “Sometimes when it’s like Friday night you kind of have to laugh it off and move on to the next one.”

In explanation the Southampton striker references his final season at Reading, when he scored 23 goals in the Championship - 28 in total - before going 11 games without a goal midway through the next one - the 2011-12 campaign - without a goal for his new club West Brom.

“You’ve just got to keep going and going and suddenly it’ll come and they’ll fly into the net for you,” Long said.

“In training I’m hitting the net no problem, it’s just not happening in the game.”

It might be a different story if Long was 20 again and fretting over his situation.

But the experience of 12 years in England has developed his mental strength and he insists that confidence isn’t a problem.

“It comes with being a striker – you’re always going to be judged on goals. I know it’ll turn right if I keep doing the right things,” Long stated.

“It would be worse if I was playing bad, nothing was happening for me and the ball was bouncing off me and I wasn’t getting the chances.

“Look, it’s hard not be frustrated. I want to score goals for my country but I’ll keep believing and it will come.

“I feel over the last three games with Southampton I didn’t really have many chances and on Friday I got three but they just wouldn’t go in for me.

“The first one just went past the post, I couldn’t connect any better. The second one was a save and the third one, I don’t know how it went past the post.

“You know, sometimes this happens but I’ll keep getting in the right positions. Thankfully it didn’t cost us.

“I think if you ask any striker and they go through this stage, it just won’t go in for them, but hopefully the ball will come and hit me in the face and into the goal and it’ll kick on from there.

“I feel like I’m playing well and doing everything right – just hitting the back of the net is the next step and hopefully I can kick on.”

With Jon Walters again unavailable tonight, Martin O’Neill may decide to play a more conservative formation but Long enjoyed playing alongside Daryl Murphy and would like to retain that partnership.

“Obviously ‘Murph’ is a big, physical presence and it kind of frees me up a bit if the ball does come along and I can test them behind,” he said.

“I felt like I got hold of the ball and caused them a lot of problems. If you look back at it, you’ll see the chances that I missed and people think it’s a bad game.

“But I know myself how I performed and it is frustrating not to get a goal, but it’ll come”.

Chelsea EXCLUSIVE: Virgil Van Dijk would face battle to get in Blues team - Graeme Le Saux

Show/hide article…

That’s the verdict of former Blues man Graeme Le Saux, who reckons Antonio Conte’s squad is already well-stocked in defence.

Holland international Van Dijk emerged as a target for a cluster of top Premier League sides at the start of 2017.

And while a move to Liverpool was believed to be preferred by the centre-back over the summer, Chelsea remained a potential destination towards the end of the transfer window.

Last week Van Dijk admitted he’s still interested in quitting Southampton and that he will see what happens in January.

Virgil Van Dijk: Liverpool target will probably stay until next summer - Matt Le Tissier

Show/hide article…

That’s the verdict of Saints legend Matt Le Tissier in the wake of the Holland centre-back suggesting he’ll seek a move when the transfer window reopens.

Van Dijk, 26, emerged as one of the Premier League’s hottest properties last season with interest from a number of top clubs.

And a Liverpool switch appeared to be a formality until the Reds were accused of tapping him up in June.

Jurgen Klopp opted not to pursue other targets with Van Dijk the man firmly earmarked to bolster his defence.

Le Tissier thinks Van Dijk will probably stick with Southampton until next summer though.

Davis cements play-off berth

Show/hide article…

The Saints skipper played the full 90 minutes of his country’s final qualifier in Group C.

Ultimately the pressure was off before a ball was kicked, as Scotland’s 2-2 draw in Slovenia ensured Northern Ireland would not be the only group runner-up to miss out on a play-off berth.

Chris Brunt inadvertently put through his own net in the 71st minute to decide the contest in favour of the hosts.

Northern Ireland must now wait on the results of the remaining groups to discover whether they will be seeded for the play-offs.

Elsewhere, Fraser Forster was on the bench for England, who won 1-0 in Lithuania courtesy of Harry Kane’s first-half penalty.
