Norwich 2-2 Southampton: Steven Naismith strikes deep in stoppage time

Show/hide article…

For Norwich manager Alex Neil, a moment of respite. In East Anglia, there is a feeling of indifference and upset these days, as Neil toils in the struggle to recover from last season’s relegation from the Premier League.

Neil’s side had won only three of their previous fourteen going into this game and there are a good number in these parts who would, quite frankly, be glad to see the manager out on his ear.

Only 12,479 turned up to this FA Cup third round tie - compared to attendances regularly in excess of 26,000 last season in the top-flight. Neil attributed this to the club’s ticket pricing structure but disaffection surely played a prominent part, too, with Norwich 9th in the Championship.

‘I think the price of ticket was £25, relatively high,’ Neil said. ‘It’s just after Christmas, people are not flush with money after spending money on presents right now.’

For those that did turn up, a terrific encounter to enjoy and Neil’s stock might have risen a little after a 92nd minute equaliser by Steven Naismith. The Scotsman steered a glancing header into the far corner of the goal after being picked out by a curling Steven Whittaker cross.

For Southampton manager Claude Puel, however, this was another setback, following a haunting Christmas period in which his side suffered three Premier League defeats in six days.

The Saints were left to reflect on a tale of their centre halves, on the one who was missing and the two who stepped up to score.

The build-up to this match had been dominated by confirmation that Jose Fonte had asked to leave the club and and he was subsequently left out of the squad entirely by Puel.

The French coach admitted afterwards that the current speculation contributed to his decision. 'I respect the possibility for Jose to see any opportunities in the window.

It is now in doubt as to whether Fonte will feature at all against Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool this week.

‘I will take a decision tomorrow or Monday. It is always difficult for all the teams, although it is difficult this period it makes it important for us to manage this period as best as possible.’

In the absence of his captain, Puel will have been delighted to see goals from the two central defenders who did play, Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida.

They were terrific goals in their own right, Van Dijk’s a stylish volley and Yoshida’s a thumping header. Until injury time, it appeared the two strikes would be enough to hand Southampton a deserved victory.

As it transpired, an uplifting afternoon for Southampton descended into one of disappointment and it will certainly be interesting to see how Puel lifts his team when Liverpool arrive on the South Coast on Wednesday night.

For all the disappointment conjured by conceding a late equaliser, there were signs of promise for Southampton. They are a club with a magnificent tradition developing their own talent in recent times and this was the case again here, with five academy products in the starting line-up. Josh Sims is a silky operator in the final third and Jack Stephens impressed from right back.

There was, however, a caveat, most notably in the traumatic experience endured by young debutant goalkeeper Harry Lewis. As a club, the judgement is usually sound but in Lewis, aged only 19, it sadly appeared to be a case of player plunged in before his time.

Lewis is highly-rated by Southampton, a young goalkeeper brought through the Shrewsbury youth system, just like Joe Hart. Indeed, Hart’s mentor and former England goalkeeping coach Dave Watson personally recommended Lewis to Southampton. The club subsequently spent a six figure sum on the player in 2015.

This, however, was a distressing debut for the young player. His first glimpse of anxiety emerged when he slid out to collect the ball with his hands, only for momentum to carry him out of the penalty area. He conceded a free-kick and was lucky to avoid further punishment. Six minutes into the second-half and much worse was to follow.

It was a horror moment, a momentary loss of concentration followed by a collision of frenzied panic. Van Dijk slid a perfectly fine pass towards his goalkeeper but Lewis’ first touch was poor and as Cameron Jerome closed in, the goalkeeper rushed across, careering into the forward and bringing him to the ground. All of a sudden, a contest emerged.

Southampton had been leading up until that point, taking the lead when Van Dijk volleyed into the goal in the 37th minute. Van Dijk is a supreme defender, among the finest in the Premier League.

This is, primarily, because he marshals Southampton’s defence with assurance but Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have also been taken by his poise on the ball.

This goal was the perfect showcase, as the Dutchman shaped his body expertly to meet Dusan Tadic’s whipped cross and fire a splendid volley into the ground and past Michael McGovern in the Norwich goal.

It was a lead Southampton just about deserved and in truth, Norwich did not appear likely to recover, barely troubling the visitors defence until they drew level.

After Whittaker’s equaliser, Southampton responded strongly, as Tadic tested McGovern with a stinging effort and they then retook the lead when Maya Yoshida met a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s curling cross with a bullet of a header.

Southampton continued to press, testing McGovern again through Tadic but as we entered injury-time, Norwich rallied, as Naismith stooped to ensure the replay.

Southampton midfielder Dominic Gape joins Wycombe on permanent deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Dominic Gape has joined League Two side Wycombe Wanderers on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Dorset-born academy product Gape, 22, joins the Chairboys on a free transfer after impressing during a successful loan spell at Adams Park.

Wanderers are currently in the play-off positions, with former Saints Under-21s skipper Gape playing 20 games for them this season, scoring one goal.

A statement on the Southampton website read: “Southampton Football Club would like to wish Dom every success in the future and also thank him for his hard work at the club.”

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said: "This is a significant piece of business for us, not just bringing Dom back to the club but getting him on our books as a Wycombe Wanderers player.

"We were delighted to get him in August because we knew a lot about him and he very quickly became an important member of the team. He’s a ball winner who’s confident in possession and he fits right in to the culture of hard work that we’ve got here.

“The deal took a lot of hard work from myself and the chairman, but it was all worthwhile because we want this squad to be as strong as it can be and Dom has a big part to play here.”

Millwall 3 Bournemouth 0: League One side stun Eddie Howe’s woeful outfit

Show/hide article…

Millwall pulled off one of the upsets of the third round of the FA Cup with a stunning performance against a woeful Bournemouth outfit.

With 10 points from a possible 12 earned over the Christmas period, the League One outfit kept with the same starting 11 for the fifth straight game.

Their Premier League opponents changed every member of the starting 11 that let slip a three-goal lead to Arsenal earlier in the week, including Lewis Grabban, who had only scored once in 21 appearances.

Millwall settled the earlier of the two sides, and Steve Morison should have put the south London outfit ahead after just five minutes. A poor clearance by Bournemouth goalkeeper Adam Federici, after being challenged by Lee Gregory, fell to the home striker with a view on goal, but perhaps hurried his first-time shot too much and put the ball wide.

After a cold and flat-footed start, Bournemouth started to find their feet in the contest. However, the lead was deservedly taken on 26 minutes by the home side - an inswinging corner by Shaun Williams found the head of Morison, who made up for his earlier miss with a well-aimed effort.

Fleming: We deserved something from the game

Show/hide article…

Saints put on a valiant display against a strong Hammers outfit at Little Heath, but goals from Joe Powell and Korrey Henry ensured victory for the hosts.

“I think there are two ways to look at it,” started Fleming.

“Development-wise we had a very, very young side out there today. We had eight first years involved and I thought they performed really well.

“We dominated the game and created lots of chances, but got caught by two sucker-punches whilst we didn’t make the most of our opportunities.

“But the lads dug in physically against bigger opposition and coped with it well. On the ball I thought we were more than worth something from the game.”

Powell put the Hammers ahead directly from a free-kick in the first half, before Henry then netted in added time to complete the win.

But, despite the scoreline, Fleming felt his side had the better of the play.

“It was a tight game but overall I felt we had the better chances,” he continued.

“I think the lads were walking off the pitch thinking ‘how have we lost that game?’ You could see it in their eyes. They played well, created chances but lost the game.

“That’s football, and what we have to do is just polish them and make them aware of the things they need to do to win games like that in the future.”

U18 Report: West Ham 2-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

A first-half free-kick from Joe Powell and late effort from Korrey Henry were enough to secure victory for the hosts, as Will Smallbone saw his second-half strike ruled out for offside.

Saints started brightly and Smallbone had the best chance of the opening exchanges, as the midfielder dragged an early shot wide of Rihards Matrevics’ far post.

At the other end, Powell tested Alex Cull from range, but the Saints keeper clutched the long-distance effort with relative ease.

Two free-kicks almost created early breakthroughs for Craig Fleming’s men. Christoph Klarer knocked down the first for Michael Obafemi to hit the post, only for the striker to be adjudged offside.

Moments later Ben Rowthorn pushed another Smallbone delivery past the Hammers goalkeeper at the near post, but the hosts’ defence were able to clear as the ball loomed towards the line.

It was, however, a West Ham free-kick that eventually broke the deadlock. Powell bent his 25-yard strike around the outside of the wall and low into Cull’s bottom corner to take the lead.

Saints looked to respond immediately. Harrison Davis made a surging run forwards and delivered a teasing cross towards the lurking Obafemi in the penalty area, but it was just too far ahead for the striker to make any meaningful contact.

A swift counter almost saw Jahmal Hector-Ingram double the Hammers’ advantage before the break, but Klarer made a vital last-minute interception to ensure Saints went into the interval just one behind.

Southampton almost found their way back into the encounter on the 64th minute as Harlem Hale slipped Obafemi in one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only for the striker to be denied by the strong hand of Matrevics.

Minutes later Saints had the ball was in the net. Smallbone played a neat one-two on the edge of the area and then curled beautifully into the far corner, only to be denied by the lineman’s flag.

Not to be outdone, Saints continued to press and Obafemi broke down the left flank to cross for Siph Mdlalose at the far post, but his strike was well saved again by Matrevics.

With ten minutes to play Mdlalose was denied again from close range before Obafemi then struck over from the resulting corner; whilst, at the other end, Hammers goalscorer Powell was denied by the foot of Cull’s post.

In the final minute Klarer nodded a Smallbone free-kick down for Hale to try his luck at goal, but the Saints forward’s acrobatic effort was easily saved by Matrevics.

The Hammers then put the result beyond doubt in the dying seconds of the game, as Henry rifled in low from distance to double the scoreline.
