Southampton boss Claude Puel refuses to discuss Jose Fonte’s future

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel refused to be drawn on why captain Jose Fonte was missing from the squad at Carrow Road as Norwich scored an injury-time equaliser to seal an FA Cup third-round replay.

Portugal defender Fonte was left out of the third-round clash completely after it was revealed earlier in the week the 33-year-old has asked to leave St Mary’s.

Fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk returned from suspension and opened the scoring with a volley, only for Steven Whittaker to level from the penalty spot after Saints’ 19-year-old debutant goalkeeper Harry Lewis fouled Cameron Jerome.

The Premier League side looked set to be into round four when Maya Yoshida nodded Southampton back in front, but Steven Naismith’s last-gasp effort means the sides will have to meet again to see who will make it through.

Whether Fonte will be at the club by the time the replay comes around remains to be seen after Puel was cagey when answering questions on his future after the game in Norfolk.

“I think (executive director) Les Reed gave an interview about the situation, I have no comment,” he said.

“I respect the possibility for Jose to see any opportunities in the window.”

Pushed on why he had omitted Fonte from his squad, the Frenchman replied: “I don’t want to give a reason, just to understand the situation with the player and questions about his future.”

Southampton face Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday but Puel would not be drawn as to whether Fonte will be involved.

“I will take a decision tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday,” he added.

"You can understand I cannot give an answer about this. It is between Jose and the club and we will see in the future.

“It is always difficult for all the teams, although it is difficult this period it makes it important for us to manage this period as best as possible.”

The game was watched by less than 12,500 people as Norwich boss Alex Neil blamed the high ticket prices for keeping home fans away.

Neil was also less than pleased with defender Timm Klose, who was off the pitch when Yoshida headed Southampton back in front.

The defender had taken himself to the touchline after suffering a kick to his Achilles and received treatment before being replaced by Ryan Bennett.

But Neil wanted the Switzerland international to remain on the pitch so the Canaries were not left short at the back.

“Timm Klose goes down but decided to go off the pitch which I think is naive,” he said.

"It leaves us defending with one last man. He could have gone down on the pitch and there is a stop in play and we can make a decision.

“He goes off at the side of the pitch and we are defending for the next three minutes, it comes right from where he would have been, that was really frustrating.”

Yoshida’s goal tainted by equaliser

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida was pleased to be back on the scoresheet, but says his header felt less important following Norwich’s late goal, which forced a replay in the Emirates FA Cup.

The Japanese defender headed Southampton into a 2-1 lead at Carrow Road, with a fine effort from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s cross, which looked set to seal Saints’ route to the fourth round of the competition, until Steven Naismith’s late intervention at the other end.

It was another tough goal for Claude Puel’s men to concede on the back of their recent run of games, which added further frustration for Yoshida.

“We shouldn’t concede the last minute goal, of course,” he said.

“To be honest, we’re very disappointed but we don’t have too much time to change anything so just focus on the next game against Liverpool and the semi-final.

“We are frustrated because we controlled the game, same as the one against West Brom, and we conceded two goals.

“Now we’ve conceded too many goals, and we need to stop that.”

Yoshida’ header was applauded for its technique, and the defender says he has a new arrival to thank for the effort which ended his goal drought.

“I think the baby gives me some luck,” he said with a laugh. “It was a header because I have to get up so much!

“I’ve been waiting a long time for that,” he added. “I’ve not scored for a long time for the team, so I’m happy for that but it doesn’t matter if I score or not, if the team didn’t win. Most importantly we stop conceding goals and get back to winning ways.”

Norwich 2-2 Southampton: Saints face fixture chaos after FA Cup draw

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel admitted Saints had nobody to blame but themselves for a potential nine games in January following a 2-2 FA Cup draw at Norwich.

Saints conceded two sloppy goals to lose a game they largely dominated at Carrow Road, and now have a replay to come at St Mary’s.

Should Saints get through they will face a remarkable nine games in the space of this month, including the two legs of EFL Cup semi-final and some vital Premier League matches.

Steven Naismith’s injury time equaliser was a sickener for Saints, but Puel was making no excuses.

He said: “I think of course it’s a big disappointment because I have the feeling we control the game, we control the ball and we score two fantastic goals with Virgil and Maya.

“We can do the most difficult we believe with the second goal and I think it’s our fault to give an opportunity in the last minute to this team to come back on the game.

“It is a big disappointment and, I agree, with another game it is a strong January month and this is difficult.

“They know this, all my players know this, because we make many games since the beginning of the season and one week it would have been interesting to recover but now this is not possible.

“It is important to see the next game and to take game after game with a good concentration and not like the last five minutes and to try to have clean sheets and good results and step by step to make good work.”

Puel made a number of changes to his side for the Norwich game, but did ensure there was some experience in his line-up.

He handed a debut to 19-year-old keeper Harry Lewis, just 18 months after he joined the club from Shrewsbury.

He made two decent saves but had a horror moment early in the second half as he miscontrolled a back pass and then brought down Cameron Jerome as he tried to win the ball back, conceding a penalty converted by Steven Whittaker.

Puel insisted: “It’s important to say he make two good saves.

“It’s interesting and it’s a pity for him to make this mistake, but it was important to see Harry play.

“We have Alex McCarthy out with injury and it’s important to give him game time and develop all the young players, like Harry Lewis also.

“It’s a pity for him and also for all the team because we had control of the game and with this goal just in the last minute it’s a disappointment but we play the next game, the next round at home, and a good chance for us to make a good game.

“It is more work but it is our own fault and we will give a good answer.”

Norwich City 2 Southampton 2, FA Cup: Steven Naismith keeps dream alive with stoppage-time equaliser

Show/hide article…

Steven Naismith’s stoppage-time header kept Norwich in the Cup after a rare goal from Maya Yoshida had put Southampton seconds away from victory.

The afternoon was one to remember for Southampton’s debutant goalkeeper Harry Lewis, who began his career at Joe Hart’s old club Shrewsbury Town.

Lewis, 19, saw Virgil van Dijk volley Saints ahead but gave away a penalty that Steven Whittaker converted.

Yoshida’s header put Saints back in front but their rookie goalkeeper was left dreadfully exposed in the final minute for Naismith to exploit.

Norwich made five changes and Southampton eight, with Saints captain Jose Fonte, having submitted a transfer request, nowhere to be seen.

Puel: We were in control

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel said it was “difficult to accept” the late draw at Carrow Road where Southampton were pegged back in stoppage time to a 2-2 draw in the Emirates FA Cup.

Saints led twice in the match thanks to goals from defenders Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida, only to see Steven Naismith’s 92nd minute header earn Norwich a replay at St Mary’s.

Puel was frustrated not only to see the hosts get back into the contest, but also the implication it has on his team’s schedule of matches which has increased by a further game in this month.

“It’s difficult to accept this because I think it’s always difficult to play away against a Championship team,” said Puel.

“I think we have had control of the game and have scored two fantastic goals through Virgil and Maya, which were the most difficult. It’s a pity and we find it difficult to take this goal in the last minute of the game. I think it’s our fault and that these possibilities happen.

“OK, it’s a second round now and we play at home, but it’s another game on January in the cup to go alongside the Premier League and the EFL Cup.

“It’s another important game without the possibility to recover also. It’s without a week of recovery and work, but it’s our fault and it’s important to have a good answer in the next game against Norwich.”

Norwich 2-2 Southampton: Late Steven Naismith goal denies Saints

Show/hide article…

Steven Naismith scored an injury-time header to seal an FA Cup third-round replay for Norwich as they twice pegged back Southampton at Carrow Road.

Maya Yoshida’s headed goal had appeared to be enough for Saints to advance after Virgil van Dijk’s volleyed opener was cancelled out by Steven Whittaker’s penalty.

But the Canaries refused to lie down and Naismith met Whittaker’s cross unmarked to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw, with both sides now in the hat for Monday’s fourth-round draw.

Plenty of Norwich fans steered clear of the game, with the usually bustling Carrow Road down to a sparse attendance of 12,479.

Van Dijk returned from suspension to captain Saints, while want-away defender Jose Fonte was not even among the substitutes.

Only Yoshida, Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse survived from the 3-0 Premier League defeat at Everton as Southampton boss Claude Puel rotated his squad.

Shane Long spurned an early opportunity to give the top-flight outfit the lead before Saints’ 19-year old debutant goalkeeper Harry Lewis held a Martin Olsson free-kick.

After their slow start, Norwich started to enjoy the majority of possession - Jonny Howson having a shot deflected behind by Van Dijk and Lewis saving from Cameron Jerome’s header soon after.

Michael McGovern had been recalled in the other goal and the Canaries stopper did well to push a Tadic free-kick behind after Alexander Tettey had fouled Long.

Referee Christopher Kavanagh decided not to book Lewis after he slid out of his box with the ball still in his grasp, but with nothing coming from the free-kick, it was Southampton who wasted a superb chance.

They countered at pace as Josh Sims freed Long, who burst through on goal before blazing well over the crossbar, with McGovern tipping the Republic of Ireland forward’s next effort over as half time approached.

But Saints would take the lead seconds later as the resulting corner was put over to the back post by Tadic at the second attempt and Van Dijk volleyed home unmarked.

Norwich were level six minutes after the break courtesy of a moment of madness from Lewis, who took a heavy touch from a Van Dijk backpass and hauled Jerome to the ground as he chased the ball, conceding a penalty which Whittaker stroked home.

Southampton reacted well and dominated the next period of play, although they only had a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg shot straight at McGovern to show for it.

Tadic stung the palms of McGovern with a drive from the edge of the box before Timm Klose was forced off the pitch to receive treatment on a knee problem, and with the Austrian on the sidelines, Saints re-established their lead as Yoshida nodded home Hojbjerg’s cross.

The visitors looked to see the game out but failed to do so as, with four minutes added, Naismith scored his first goal since November when he guided Whittaker’s centre past Lewis.

Norwich 2-2 Southampton - in pictures

Show/hide article…

Saints threw away the lead twice as they drew 2-2 with Championship side Norwich at Carrow Road in the FA Cup third round.

Virgil van Dijk volleyed Saints ahead soon before the break, but a nightmare error for rookie goalkeeper Harry Lewis on his debut gifted the Canaries a penalty on 52 minutes.

Steven Whittaker cracked home the spot kick, before Maya Yoshida restored Saints’ lead with just over 20 minutes left to play.

But Norwich altered their game plan, sticking sub Kyle Lafferty and Cameron Jerome up top, beating the ball long to them in a last-gasp hope of levelling.

It paid off, but it wasn’t either of the Canaries’ towering striker that scored. It was the pint-sized Steven Naismith that headed home Whittaker’s floated cross to set up a replay at St Mary’s.

Our chief photographer Stuart Martin was at St Mary’s Stadium, so check out the pictures above.

Norwich 2-2 Southampton: Naismith’s late goal holds Saints

Show/hide article…

Steven Naismith struck in injury time to add to Saints’ recent woes as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Championship side Norwich in the FA Cup third round.

It had seemed as if Saints were going to put three consecutive defeats behind them and head into the fourth round as centre halves Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida scored either side of Steven Whittaker converting from the penalty spot after a horrible error from debutante 19-year-old keeper Harry Lewis.

However, Naismith had the final say and ensured Saints will have to suffer a replay they could well do without in an already packed January fixture schedule.

Saints started on the front foot and nearly created something significant after just three minutes as Shane Long stood up a cross from the right by-line that eventually fell to Dusan Tadic, but his shot was blocked.

Harry Lewis was a spectator for the opening stages as Saints had all the play, until they conceded a central free kick 25 yards out.

Alex Pritchard struck it on target and, although it was a fairly routine save for Lewis down to his right, he dealt with it solidly, with confidence and showed no nerves on his debut.

Pritchard had another chance from almost exactly the same spot on 14 minutes but this time it was an awful effort that sailed well over the bar.

The game was fairly open with both sides willing play to the ball on the deck and pass it.

Saints looked the stronger due to the extra quality in their ranks, and the fact they were getting runners breaking forward.

Norwich created the next opening as Steven Naismith cut the ball back to Jonny Howson on the edge of the box but his shot was deflected wide.

Tadic forced Michael McGovern into a first meaningful save on 20 minutes with a curling left footed free kick from 25 yards out, but it was relatively central and the Norwich keeper dived to his right to push it away.

Saints created a fantastic chance on 27 minutes as they went on a quick counter attack.

A terrific pass from Josh Sims picked out the run of Long who had the chance to shoot on the half volley from inside the area but he fired across goal and over.

Long managed to hit the target with a header ten minutes later but McGovern was able to turn it over the bar.

There was nothing the Norwich stopper could to keep out Virgil van Dijk’s fantastic finish as the corner came back to Tadic on the right and he whipped in a cross.

Van Dijk swivelled and hit a wonderful volley from the far edge of the six yard box that rocketed into the opposite bottom corner to give Saints the lead.

That was the last significant action of the first half and with Saints having looked comfortable in defence for the vast majority of the game it gave them every chance of sealing a fairly routine win in the second period.

Norwich showed their intent to try and get back into it just two minutes after the restart as Josh Murphy forced his way forward and lashed a shot into the side netting.

Josh Sims became the first player to go in the book after kicking the ball away having been caught offside.

Lewis had a nightmare moment as he took a heavy touch trying to control a standard back pass and it cost Saints their lead on 52 minutes.

Cameron Jerome had chased Lewis down and got ahead of him in the race to catch the ball after the loose touch. The Norwich striker was running out of the box but Lewis dived in from behind with a needless challenge and brought Jerome down.

There was little debate over the award of a penalty from referee Chris Kavanagh and Lewis was unable to atone for the horror error, diving the wrong way as Steven Whittaker produced a cool finish from the spot.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg tried to restore the advantage with a well struck from outside the area but it was straight at McGovern who held on.

Puel made a double change on 63 minutes in a bid to get the win with Oriol Romeu and Jay Rodriguez replacing Long and Reed.

McGovern was made to work hard to keep Saints out on 65 minutes as Tadic hit an excellent half volley from just inside the area but the keeper dived to turn it over.

Saints got the lead a minute later through a stunning header by Maya Yoshida.

Norwich were briefly down to ten men with centre half Timm Klose off the pitch receiving treatment and Saints took full advance with Yoshida arriving in the area to meet Hojbjerg’s right wing cross with a bullet header from eight yards out that arrowed through the arms of the helpless McGovern.

Norwich made their first changes with Jacob Murphy and Ryan Bennett coming on for Josh Murphy and Klose.

Rodriguez nearly sealed it as he broke forward and got in a left footed shot but it whistled wide of the near post.

Both sides made their final change with 11 minutes remaining with Nathan Redmond getting a runout against his former club in place of Sims while Kyle Lafferty replaced Pritchard for Norwich.

Lewis made a strong save at his near post to keep out a drilled effort from Jacob Murphy as the Canaries chased an equaliser.

The fourth official held up the board to show there would be four minutes of stoppage time for Saints to see out.

They were unable to do that as Whittaker was given time to measure a right wing cross that was met by the head of Steven Naismith, totally unmarked in the area. He glanced a header into the far corner to seal a draw and a replay Saints could do without.

Report: Norwich 2-2 Saints

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring in the first-half when he converted a superb volley from Dušan Tadić’s cross, before Steven Whittaker’s penalty levelled things up in the second period.

Maya Yoshida then sent a thunderous header beyond the reach of Michael McGovern to restore the advantage, but there was to be a twist in the tale in stoppage time when Steven Naismith sent a header into the far corner.

Claude Puel made eight changes from the 3-0 defeat to Everton in the Premier League, handing a first-team debut to Harry Lewis, with van Dijk, Jack Stephens, Harrison Reed, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Shane Long, Josh Sims all coming in.

Long was involved inside 30 seconds, when he got behind the Norwich backline before seeing his effort drift just wide.

The Republic of Ireland international looked bright early on and not long after, he got to the byline to tee up Tadić, who saw his effort on the turn blocked by Whittaker.

In response, Martin Olsson’s well-struck free-kick after Alex Pritchard was brought down by Reed, was held comfortably by debutant Lewis.

Saints continued to dominate proceedings and Tadić drew a superb save from McGovern when he sent a curling left-footed free-kick towards goal.

Moments later, an incisive counter-attack saw Josh Sims slide an inch-perfect pass into Long’s run, but he couldn’t keep his effort down.

On 38 minutes though, they had the lead they merited when Tadić’s cross from the right found van Dijk unmarked at the back post, who made no mistake with a superbly taken volley across goal.

After the interval and it was the Canaries who started brightest, with Josh Murphy hitting the side-netting with a right-footed drive.

And they were level when Cameron Jerome’s pace caused problems inside the box and Lewis brought the forward down for a penalty, with Whittaker stepping up to convert.

Shortly after the hour mark, Long and Reed made way for Oriol Romeu and Jay Rodriguez as Puel went in search of a winner.

Tadić was soon denied by another stunning save from McGovern when he got fingertips to a fine dipping volley, after Ryan Bertand’s low centre narrowly evaded the onrushing Sims.

Pressure was building and in the 65th minute it was Yoshida who was to restore the lead.

Højbjerg’s cross saw the defender get across Norwich captain Russell Martin and power an unstoppable header beyond McGovern.

But Saints could not hold out and were cruelly denied in injury time when Whittaker’s cross from the right was flicked into the far corner by the head of Naismith to earn the hosts a replay.
