Puel: Lewis will benefit from experience

Show/hide article…

The 19-year-old made his debut for the club, as he was handed a start in the Emirates FA Cup third-round match, at Carrow Road.

Lewis made some good saves during the game, although suffered a moment of misfortune in the second half, when he gave away a penalty that allowed Norwich their first equaliser of the afternoon.

Puel believes there is a lot that the youngster can take from the match, though.

“He made a mistake, but after that he made two or three good saves and he was good overall, so this is an experience for him for his future,” said the Saints boss.

“It’s a good thing always, to try to develop young players like Harry Lewis and others, but it’s a pity for all these young players the result wasn’t [a win].

“But we have another opportunity with the second match against Norwich.”

Transfer drama means star man won’t play in Southampton v Liverpool clash

Show/hide article…

Fonte handed in a transfer request last week and wasn’t in the squad for their FA Cup third-round clash with Norwich. And Southampton boss Puel has now ruled him out of his side’s biggest game of the season so far. Puel said: "Jose won’t participate for this game. "We will see for the next game. It is important to keep stability. "We do not know the future of Jose, it is a difficult situation in the market. I respect Jose, it is not an easy situation for the staff or players. It is difficult.

"We will see (about including him in the future), I do not comment on the possibility (of him moving). I think it is important to respect the other players. "It is an opportunity also for Jose to view different opportunities and it is important to respect this. "For me, it is important to keep stability in defence first, and second, we will see what the situation of Jose in this market is. "If Jose came to leave the club, it is normal for us to look at other opportunities (to buy players to replace him). “It is important for us to remain open in the market and look at other opportunities, we do not know about other opportunities yet, it is difficult for the club to improve the squad this month.” There was better news for Liverpool, though, with Philippe Coutinho set to return from a long-term knee injury.

Klopp said: “I think Phil is fit enough to be part of the squad and that means there could be minutes but it depends on the game. “It was six or seven weeks and that is long so he needs minutes in training especially but then as soon as possible minutes in games. “No final decision has been made until now but I think the third complete session he did with the team so tomorrow again would be the fourth. “It is not that many but for being in the squad it is enough.”

Jose Fonte: Southampton defender not included for Liverpool EFL Cup semi-final

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Jose Fonte will not play in Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool after making a transfer request.

Fonte, 33, joined in 2010 and has turned down an extension to his contract which ends in 2018, according to club director of football Les Reed.

“It is important for me to keep stability in the defence with players,” said Southampton boss Claude Puel. "We don’t know the future for Jose.

Puel did not select the Portugal international for Saturday’s FA Cup draw at Norwich.

The former Lyon boss told the media that speculation over Fonte’s future had been a distraction before the meeting with Liverpool at St Mary’s, as Southampton bid for a first domestic final since 2003.

“I respect Jose and this is not easy for him, the squad or the staff,” said Puel. “He is a good professional, but we have to respect this situation.”

Fonte joined Saints from Crystal Palace in January 2010 and has made 288 appearances.

He was linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer after helping his country win Euro 2016.

Puel: Fonte won’t feature

Show/hide article…

Saints host the Reds in the first leg of the semi-final, but, with Fonte’s future currently uncertain, Puel says he will not be included.

"José doesn’t participate in this game,” he said. "We will see for the next game. But, for the moment, and with the situation of José, it’s important to keep the stability in defence.

"We don’t know the future for José. It’s a difficult situation with the window [being open]. For the moment, I stay with stability in defence.

"The club has given him the possibility to study different opportunities during the window and it’s important to respect this.

"I respect José and I respect this situation. Of course, it’s not easy, for José, for the squad, for the staff.

"It’s difficult to play and have the good concentration with this situation. He’s a strong professional, a good professional, but it’s a particular situation and it’s important to respect this.”

Puel added that Virgil van Dijk will continue as captain during games in his absence, but that Fonte remains in the role.

Jurgen Klopp reveals how Liverpool will line up against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Klopp put out the youngest starting XI in the club’s history in the 0-0 FA Cup draw with Plymouth. But the Kop boss will call on his big guns for the trip to St Mary’s on Wednesday. That could include Philippe Coutinho, who is back fit after seven weeks out with a knee injury. Klopp said: “Wednesday will see the best team we can line up.

“If you ask for a rating in England the League Cup is third but while you are still in it it is the most important cup. “If you win and it is wonderful with the youngest line-up ever. After the game it is the easiest job for you to ask ‘Why did you make all these changes?’ “The question I asked this morning in the dressing room was 'Could we have done better? 100 per cent yes with this line-up. “I don’t expect perfection but I have high expectations because I see them every day in training and I was convinced we could play really well.

“I have absolutely no problem with criticism but it was not about under-estimating an opponent. “It is not about young, old, whatever. “It is about which line-up made the most sense because of the injury situations of the players and the timing - when do we play who?”

Puel: Fonte won’t face Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte will not be considered for selection for the EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Saints boss Claude Puel has taken the decision to leave out the centre half, who asked to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Though as yet there have been no bids for Fonte, the speculation is proving to be unsettling, and with that in mind Puel has opted to leave out the 33-year-old for the visits of the Reds, and said Virgil van Dijk will captain the side.

He said: “Jose does not participate in this game. We see for the next game. For the moment the situation of Jose it is important for me to keep stability in defence with the players.

“We don’t know the future for Jose and I know it’s a difficult situation during the market, and for the moment I stay with stability on defence.”

He added: “You know the situation with Jose and the club giving him the possibility without agree between the two parts, the possibility for different opportunities during this window market.

“It is important to respect this. I respect Jose and I respect this situation.

“Of course it’s not easy this situation for Jose, for the squad and for the staff.

“It is the window market and I took this and just I think it’s important when opportunities come it is difficult to play, to have good concentration with this situation.

“He is a strong professional, a very good professional, but this is a particular situation and it’s important to respect this.”

Philippe Coutinho to return for Liverpool’s EFL Cup tie against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Philippe Coutinho will return to the Liverpool squad for the first time in more than six weeks for the EFL Cup semi-final against Southampton, manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The Brazil international only resumed full training on Saturday following an ankle ligament injury picked up in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland at Anfield on November 29.

Ahead of Wednesday’s trip to St Mary’s, live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 7.30pm, Klopp also revealed Coutinho could feature at some point during their first-leg encounter with the Saints.

“I think Phil is fit enough to be a big part of the squad. (It) means there could be minutes. It depends on the game,” the Liverpool manager said.

"It’s been six or seven weeks. It’s long. But no final decision has been made until now.

“I think [it was] the third complete session, tomorrow is the fourth.”

Prior to suffering the injury, Coutinho had been enjoying a superb season, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 14 appearances.

Away from Coutinho, Klopp also provided further positive news on the injury front after confirming James Milner and captain Jordan Henderson are close to returning from their respective calf and heel problems.

“Milly, no issues anymore. Hendo, on a very good way, he’s really mentally strong. It’s still painful, but he’s doing well,” he added.

“We’ll see what we can do with him. Hopefully Thursday he’ll be in team training.”

Klopp came in for criticism from some quarters after making 10 changes for Sunday’s goalless draw with Sky Bet League Two side Plymouth in the FA Cup, with the German electing to field five teenagers in his starting line-up.

A defiant Klopp insisted that he stood by his decision to rotate his squad, but said he will field his strongest side for their clash on the south coast.

“I don’t expect fairness in judgement,” he said. "It was clear before the game, if you win it’s wonderful you have the youngest line-up ever.

"That was the line-up we should have chosen. I could explain each single change, I don’t want to but I could.

"I asked ‘could we have done better?’ 100 per cent yes. I don’t expect perfection, but I have the highest expectations because of training.

“Wednesday, the best team we can play, that’s how it is.”

Jose Fonte will not face Liverpool after his Southampton transfer request

Show/hide article…

Jose Fonte has been left out of Southampton’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool, with manager Claude Puel willing to omit his club captain due to his desire to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Fonte has already handed in a transfer request, having been denied a move away from the south coast club during the summer transfer window. The defender was absent from the FA Cup third round draw with Norwich City at the weekend, and he will miss a second match in succession after Puel confirmed on Monday that he is not being considered for selection this week.

"We will see for the next game. It is important to keep stability.

“It is important for us to remain open in the market and look at other opportunities, we do not know about other opportunities yet, it is difficult for the club to improve the squad this month.”

The Euro 2016 winner has turned down a contract extension from the Saints, and with his current deal set to expire in 2018, Southampton could find their hand forced in the transfer market. The 33-year-old arrived at Southampton in 2010, and promptly helped the south coast side win promotion from both League One and the Championship before solidifying their Premier League status.

With Puel attempting to take Southampton through to their first major final since 2003, the Frenchman insists that the entire club is focusing on the two games with Liverpool, with a place in the final against either Manchester United or Hull City on the line.

The unwanted distraction has left Puel with a decision to make, and he confirmed that the situation means he cannot select the Portuguese international because he is not focussed on Wednesday’s first leg at St Mary’s.

“I respect Jose and this is not easy for him, the squad or the staff,” Puel added. “He is a good professional, but we have to respect this situation.”

Manchester United were linked with a move for Fonte shortly after he helped Portugal to success in last summer’s European Championship, although manager Jose Mourinho has since played down the likelihood of United signing a defender this month, with his attentions believed to be on Benfica’s young centre-back Victor Lindelhof, but both Manchester City and Chelsea are also looking at options to strengthen their defence.

Puel also elaborated on the Moroccan Football Association’s announcement that Southampton’s record signing, Sofiane Boufal, will miss the African Cup of Nations after suffering a knee injury that requires an operation.

"Boufal is injured with his knee. His knee needs operating and he cannot do the African Cup. He will stay with us to recover.

"I hope he can come back in a few weeks.

"He cannot play for his country but I hope he can recover.

"It is not a bad injury, after the operation the reaction will tell. It is important to get a good recovery.

“He can stay calm because now he is an important player for the club, he has quality and it is important he comes back strong.”

We’ve got nothing to lose, says Puel

Show/hide article…

The two sides have already met on the South Coast this season, as Saints held the visitors to a 0-0 draw.

And Puel is excited by the challenge of coming up against Jurgen Klopp’s men with a place at Wembley in the offing.

“We played this game in the Premier League, it was a strong game for us in defensive organisation,” Puel said.

“It was strong work to keep a good level, but I think it will be important also for this game to have a little more the ball and try to have control of the game.

“I know it’s difficult against this team because of their ability to recover the ball together with their strong pressing. Also, they keep the ball with technical players and quality and organisation.

“It’s a strong challenge and exciting. I think we are not favourite for this game and the second half away is difficult also but we have nothing to lose, just to play good level, to take pleasure and to make a result.”
