Claude Puel has confirmed that Jose Fonte will not be a part of Southampton’s squad for their EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool.
The 33-year-old club captain, who has 18 months left on his current contract, handed in a transfer request on Thursday. That comes after he claimed on social media last month that he had not rejected a new deal but said he was told he would not be offered fresh terms by the Saints.
Fonte was absent for Saturday’s FA Cup draw against Norwich and Puel has decided to leave him out again for the first leg against Liverpool at St Mary’s on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports 1 HD, but refused to rule out selecting the Portugal international in the near future.
“Jose won’t participate for this game,” he said. "We will see for the next game. It is important to keep stability. We do not know the future of Jose, it is a difficult situation in the market. I respect Jose, it is not an easy situation for the staff or players. It is difficult.
"We will see [about including him in the future], I do not comment on the possibility [of him moving]. I think it is important to respect the other players.
"It is an opportunity also for Jose to view different opportunities and it is important to respect this. For me, it is important to keep stability in defence first, and second, we will see what the situation of Jose in this market is.
"If Jose came to leave the club, it is normal for us to look at other opportunities [to buy players to replace him].
“It is important for us to remain open in the market and look at other opportunities, we do not know about other opportunities yet, it is difficult for the club to improve the squad this month.”
Meanwhile, Southampton midfielder Sofiane Boufal will miss the Africa Cup of Nations because of a knee injury. The 23-year-old was due to link up with Morocco for the competition but has been forced to pull out and Puel is hopeful he will be back for the club within a few weeks.
“Boufal is injured with his knee,” he said. "His knee needs operating and he cannot do the African Cup. He will stay with us to recover. I hope he can come back in a few weeks. He cannot play for his country but I hope he can recover.
“It is not a bad injury, after the operation the reaction will tell. It is important to get a good recovery. He can stay calm because now he is an important player for the club, he has quality and it is important he comes back strong.”
Sofiane Boufal is facing three weeks out with a knee injury after being sent home injured from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Saints’ £16m club record signing was expected to be away with Morocco for at least that long, but Claude Puel confirmed that inflammation on the previous knee injury that stopped him playing early in his time with the club, means he will undergo treatment at Staplewood instead.
He said: “Sofiane Boufal is injured with his knee.
“He cannot handle the African Cup and he stays with us to recovery.
“I hope he can come back in three weeks.
“It is not an important injury, it is an inflammation of his knee, but he cannot play for his country.
He added: “It is just inflammation. It is not a bad injury and it is normal because after the operation sometimes the reaction of his knee.
“It is not important if you stay with a good recovery for a few days and after it is ok for us, and for Sofiane important to be careful about this injury and these possibilities.
“It’s a good thing he can stay quiet, calm, because I think now it’s an important player for the squad with quality and he can do the difference with the dribble and quality, and it’s important he comes back with a good fit.”
Southampton manager Claude Puel has confirmed that captain Jose Fonte will not be part of his squad to face Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old defender, who has 18 months left on his current contract, handed in a transfer request on Thursday with Saints director of football Les Reed admitting that Fonte wanted to ‘explore opportunities for a transfer’.
Fonte, who joined Southampton in 2010 from Crystal Palace, was absent for Saturday’s FA Cup draw against Norwich and Puel has decided to leave him out again for the first leg at St Mary’s, although the Frenchman refused to rule out selecting the Portugal international in the near future.

It is only a matter of time until Wayne Rooney becomes Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer.
The England captain netted v Reading in the FA Cup at the weekend, to equal Bobby Charlton’s tally for the Red Devils.
Elsewhere, Sergio Aguero’s deft finish v West Ham means the 28-year-old moves above Colin Bell in Man City’s all-time goalscorer list. The Argentinian, who joined the club in 2011, now has 154 strikes in a Citizens shirt and is third in the current standings, 24 adrift of the current record holder for the club.

Big spending Manchester City are leading the Premier League chase for Barnsley defender James Bree.
Manchester United, City, Tottenham, Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton have all been monitoring the 19-year-old’s progress this season.
Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce is ready to make a £4m move after watching Bree in the FA Cup at Blackpool this weekend.
But City are unlikely to sit back and allow Bree to go to Villa and the Premier League giants are all ready to pounce for the classy right back who can also play midfield.
There are clear similarities with Manchester City’s England defender John Stones who started at Barnsley before moving to Everton.
Bree made his debut in May 2014 and has made rapid progress ever since with Premier League scouts watching him week in and week out.
Villa are keen to do a deal but the Premier League big guns will move quickly if Barnsley decide to sell.
Charlie Nicholas serves up his EFL Cup semi-final first-leg predictions as the final four battle it out for a place at Wembley.
Manchester United are strong favourites as they host Hull in Tuesday night’s tie, live on Sky Sports 1HD from 7.30pm, while the Sky cameras will also be at St Mary’s for Liverpool’s clash with Southampton.
Here’s what Soccer Saturday pundit Charlie is predicting for the two clashes in his Sky Bet tips…
I think we’re all waiting to see what develops under Marco Silva. They got a decent result at the weekend in beating Swansea 2-0.
One thing you have to say about Hull is that you can never question their players’ commitment. It’s another good game for Silva to look at his players before he gets down to the real business of trying to keep them up.
As for United, Jose Mourinho saying he’s actually starting to enjoy Manchester now tells you he’s starting to get things his way, with the players he’s not interested in halfway out of the door.
He’s got a lot of good choices with Antony Martial doing a bit more on the ball and Wayne Rooney going for the record. He could rest Zlatan Ibrahimovic again but I think he will want to play in a semi-final.
Hull will sit in and just hope to give themselves a chance but I don’t see it happening and I think the hosts will do a fairly professional job and all but kill off their visitors’ hopes.
Charlie predicts: 2-0 and Martial to score first - 18/1 with Sky Bet
The question about Southampton is are they going to go for it? I could see them sit in, play on the counter-attack and treat it like an away game.
I think they’ve been getting a bit bland under Claude Puel and you do wonder where the goals are going to come from.
I covered the league game when it ended 0-0 and Liverpool should have won three or four nil, so they have no reason to change anything from the league game and expect they’ll get a better outcome.
Jurgen Klopp seems to be getting twitchy and made too many changes in the FA Cup for me, but I do expect them to win here and, with the form he’s in, I fancy Adam Lallana to come back and haunt Southampton.
Charlie predicts: 1-2 and Lallana to score first - 35/1 with Sky Bet

Manager Claude Puel told reporters on Monday that the Portuguese international defender would not be available for the match at St Mary’s.
“Jose doesn’t participate in this game,” said the Frenchman. "We will see for the next game but, for the moment and with the situation of Jose, it’s important to keep the stability in defence.
“We don’t know the future for Jose. It’s a difficult situation with the (transfer) window.”
Puel said Southampton had given the 33-year-old “the possibility to study different opportunities,” adding that while he respected the player’s position the situation was proving a distraction.
Fonte, who joined the south coast club from Crystal Palace in 2010, was not selected for last Saturday’s FA Cup third round 2-2 draw against second-tier Norwich City at Carrow Road.
“It’s difficult to play and have the good concentration with this situation,” said the manager, who has appointed Virgil van Dijk as captain in Fonte’s absence.
Saints will take on the Canaries, at St Mary’s, on Wednesday 18th January in a third-round replay, after drawing 2-2 at Carrow Road on Saturday.
The winner of that game will then advance to face the Gunners, with that tie scheduled to take place on the weekend of 28th/29th January.
Saints and Arsenal have already met once in cup action this season, with Claude Puel’s side having won 2-0 at Emirates Stadium in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
