Seager: It’s great to get that scoring feeling back

Show/hide article…

Despite having endured a gruelling recovery from injury, it only took the Saints striker a matter of minutes before he had the ball in the net once again.

“On a personal note, it’s great to get back out there,” Seager explained.

“I’ve been waiting for it for ages, so for it to come and then to get a penalty so quickly – I just wanted to take it and score!

“To make it 3-1 is never the best circumstances to score, but when you’ve been out it doesn’t matter when or how you score, it’s about getting that feeling back.

“A lot of hard work has gone into the past eleven months with Sparksy the physio and Tom the fitness coach, so I am just buzzing to be back now.”

Seager replaced Armani Little on the 56th minute, as Saints trailed 3-0 to the Royals at Hogwood Park.

And although the 20-year-old was able to spark a late push with his converted spot kick, it was not enough to see Saints come away with any points.

“Obviously it’s a disappoint result,” he continued.

“I think the set-plays cost us the game today. We had a sloppy start and then never really recovered properly from it in the first half.

“We looked lively in the first ten minutes or so of the second half, but then they got that killer third goal and it was backs against the wall for us after that.”

Fleming braced for busy Academy schedule

Show/hide article…

Saints travel to West Ham United on Saturday for their first game of 2017, before then facing Wigan Athletic in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday.

And with the Under-23s also facing a similarly busy run of fixtures, Fleming believes there will be plenty of game time for his players to impress.

“We’re in a busy, busy period for the phase,” the manager explained.

“A lot of the lads will be involved with the Under-23s on Friday, so we will be a very young group going across on Saturday morning.

“That’s good for the lads though because it means that those that didn’t get many minutes at the start of the season can come in now and crack on.

“They’ve had a week or so off but have had a programme to follow and are a good, honest bunch so they will certainly have worked hard during that time.”

Saturday’s hosts currently sit third in the Under-18 Premier League table; six places above Saints in ninth.

Though it was Fleming’s men that ran out 2-0 victors at Staplewood during their previous league meeting back in August.

“It was a good performance that day,” he continued.

“They were unbeaten at the time – I don’t think they’d even conceded a goal until that point, so it was a very good performance from us.

“They are a very settled side. They have a group of mostly second years that stay and generally player with the under-18s, so they will be strong, tough test.”

Match Preview: Norwich vs Saints

Show/hide article…

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Pretty simple, really. It’s a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup and a chance to keep the dream of a trip to Wembley in the competition alive.

For Southampton, there is the additional importance of trying to end a run of three defeats that has halted the momentum Claude Puel’s side had built up before Christmas.

Norwich could do with a confidence-boosting result too, though, with only three of their last 14 matches having resulted in a victory.

TEAM NEWS

Norwich City: Midfielder Graham Dorrans is absent for the Canaries with a knee injury. Fellow midfielder Louis Thompson is also sidelined, but winger Matt Jarvis is set to return to the squad after recovering from injury. Manager Alex Neil has indicated he will make changes for the game, but won’t make wholesale alterations to his side.

Southampton: Right-back Cédric is set to miss out, having failed to recover in time from the injury he sustained last Monday, at Everton. Left-back Ryan Bertrand is a doubt, having suffered from illness this week. Additionally, Charlie Austin, Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy remain sidelined.

FORM GUIDE:

Norwich City’s last five:

Derby County (h) W 3-0

Brentford (a) D 0-0

Reading (a) L 1-3

Huddersfield (h) L 1-2

Aston Villa (h) W 1-0

Southampton’s last five:

Everton (a) L 0-3

West Bromwich Albion (h) L 1-2

Tottenham Hotspur (h) L 1-4

Bournemouth (a) W 3-1

Stoke City (a) D 0-0

TOP PERFORMERS:

Portugal striker Nelson Oliveira has been the main dangerman for the Canaries this season, although Saints will also need to watch out for Jacob Murphy if he plays, given the midfielder had seven goals and five assists already this term.

Top scorers: Nelson Oliveira (8), Jacob Murphy (7)

Most assists: Josh Murphy, Jacob Murphy (5)

Saints are still without top scorer Charlie Austin, as he recovers from a shoulder injury. Jay Rodriguez is closes to him in the goal charts, while James Ward-Prowse will be hoping to add to his team-leading assist total. Nathan Redmond will also be keen to add to his total of three goals, as he faces his former team.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (9), Jay Rodriguez (4)

Most assists: James Ward-Prowse (3), Dušan Tadić, Steven Davis (2)

PREVIOUS MEETINGS:

All-time record:

DID YOU KNOW?

The last time Southampton faced Norwich City in the FA Cup, they went all the way to the final of the competition, in 2003.

The only time the sides have met in the FA Cup at Carrow Road, Norwich won 2-1 in a sixth-round replay, in 1992.

If Dušan Tadić features, it will be his 100th appearance for Southampton.

Norwich City vs. Southampton - Football Match Preview - January 7, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

Norwich must again do without suspended midfielder Robbie Brady for the FA Cup third-round tie against Premier League Southampton at Carrow Road.

Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern is expected to come into the side if manager Alex Neil opts to rotate the squad, along with the likes of Scottish full-back Steven Whittaker, defender Ryan Bennett, midfielder Alex Pritchard, winger Josh Murphy and forward Kyle Lafferty.

Winger Matt Jarvis is stepping up his rehabilitation from knee surgery in the summer as he targets a first senior appearance of the season.

Midfielder Graham Dorrans (knee) remains sidelined while Louis Thompson continues to recover from an abdominal problem.

Claude Puel is expected to shuffle his pack.

The Saints boss has bemoaned the recent fixture pile-up and could give some of his younger players the chance to shine in Norfolk.

Virgil van Dijk is available after a ban but it is unlikely he will feature as Charlie Austin (shoulder), Matt Targett (hamstring) and Jeremy Pied (knee) all remain long-term absentees, while captain Jose Fonte could miss out after handing in a transfer request.

U23 Report: Reading 4-2 Saints

Show/hide article…

The Royals flew to a three-goal lead thanks to goals from Zak Jules, Joseph Mendes and Rob Dickie.

But Southampton fought back in the second-half, as substitute Ryan Seager scored from the spot-kick upon his return and Ollie Cook headed one in.

But the hosts added to their tally with a penalty of their own, which Andrija Novakovich converted, to secure a 4-2 victory.

The hosts took an early grip on the game at Hogwood Park and soon had a two-goal advantage.

Jules met a dangerous in-swinging corner at the Saints near post, and the centre back fired in from close range to open the scoring for the afternoon.

Eight minutes later the Royals had the ball in the net once more. Mendes found space on the right of Parkes’ area after a swift counter attack and provided a neat finish past the Saints stopper to make it 2-0.

Despite their two-goal advantage, Reading showed no signs of letting up. A superb delivery from the right was picked up and converted by Novakovich, only for the American striker to be denied by the offside flag.

Jose Fonte’s time at Southampton is heading towards a bitter, sad end

Show/hide article…

It was the pinnacle of Jose Fonte’s career. The moment the Portuguese international had dreamed about since kicking his first ball as a young boy. It was also the beginning of the end of his Southampton days.

When Fonte hoisted the Henri Delaunay Trophy into Parisian skies last July after helping his country to a surprise winner over hosts France in the final of Euro 2016 it was widely greeted as one of the feel-good stories of recent times. It completed Fonte’s fairy-tale climb from Tuesday night trips to the likes of Hartlepool and Dagenham & Redbridge to being crowned king of Europe in the space of only six unforgettable years.

In the days when flash cars and big money seemingly mean more to many elite players than silverware, Fonte’s long slog to the top of his profession and the sacrifices that came with it were rightly applauded. Let’s not forget, either, that when Fonte first joined Southampton from Crystal Palace in 2010 he took the unusual step of dropping down a division from the Championship to League One, believing he had a better chance of achieving his own personal ambitions on the south coast.

Fast forward six months from that night in Paris and the feel-good story is no more as Fonte’s status as a Southampton legend tarnished by a bitter contract dispute which has led to the club captain handing in a transfer request.

While there are some Saints fans who will have sympathy for their skipper, acknowledging his crucial contribution to their climb from the third tier back to the Premier League, there are many others who will now view him in a very different light than before.

The FC crew discuss the latest big-money offers coming out of China and react to Uli Hoeness’ comments on CSL spending.

The writing was on the wall long before Thursday’s announcement by director of football, Les Reed, that Fonte had asked to leave. When he returned for pre-season training following the Euros, there was a subtle change from the Fonte who departed for France at the start of the tournament. The humility that inevitably comes from not making your international debut until beyond your 30th birthday was replaced by a confident swagger, the arrogance of someone who had shared an open-top bus parade with Cristiano Ronaldo.

If club insiders’ accounts are to be believed, Fonte “still had his head in the clouds” when he reported for his first training sessions under new manager Claude Puel. That mental state of mind was clearly not helped by the ongoing claims Fonte was being lined up for a big-money move to Manchester United, speculation fuelled by his association with Jose Mourinho’s super-agent pal, Jorge Mendes.

Southampton tried to quell the speculation by offering Fonte an improved contract worth a reported £80,000 a week, a far cry from those Dagenham and Hartlepool days. Still Fonte and Mendes were not happy, demanding that Southampton extended his deal beyond the end of his current contract in 2018.

Southampton refused to be held to ransom and Fonte’s relationship with his current club would never be the same again.

Perhaps the last straw for Reed and his fellow top brass was Fonte openly questioning Puel’s controversial squad rotation policy in the media.

Maybe, for Fonte at least, it was all over when he was not selected for any of Southampton’s six Europa League group games – a slap in the face given his role in their recent rise. Or maybe it was when he was publicly dropped by Puel on the pitch before last month’s 3-1 derby win at Bournemouth that Fonte decided enough was enough. Whatever the truth – and there are unsubstantiated rumours of a dressing-room bust-up after the New Year’s Day defeat at home to West Brom – it’s a sad end to a magnificent career at St. Mary’s.

It’s also one that could have had a very different outcome but for that glorious night in the Stade de France.
