The 30 strikers West Ham have been linked with in the past six months

THE transfer window is open - which means West Ham will once again be linked with any striker who has ever pulled on a pair of footy boots.

West Ham tried desperately to land a top quality forward during the summer transfer window… and ended up with Simone Zaza.

And the Hammers are on the look out for a hitman once again, with Jermain Defoe the latest star to be heavily linked with a move to the London Stadium.

The Hammers have, quite incredibly, been linked with 30 different forwards in the past six months - do you remember them all?

Southampton want Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho

Show/hide article…

Sakho has been told he can leave Anfield this month after falling out of favour with manager Jurgen Klopp .

Saints boss Claude Puel has sounded out his fellow Frenchman about a move to St Mary’s.

Fonte looks to have played his last game for Saints after handing in a transfer request following a contract row.

Puel said: “We are aware of possibilities and opportunities.

"If a player will come to Southampton it is a player who can do good work and bring a strong level to the squad.”

Fonte isn’t the only Saints defender linked with a move away from St Marys, but while they seem happy to oblige the Portuguese Southampton executive director Les Reed as insisted star man Virgil van Dijk is going nowhere.

“Virgil is not for the sale.

“We haven’t had any bids and if we got any bids we wouldn’t consider them because it just doesn’t make sense to think we would release Virgil van Dijk in midseason when we have still got, we believe, all to play for.

“There haven’t been any enquiries but certainly the status of him at the moment is that he is simply not for sale.”

Puel says squad can cope

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel believes Southampton’s squad will continue to benefit from regular games, after seeing his side take a replay against Norwich in the Emirates FA Cup.

Playing three games in a week has been a regular occurrence for Saints this season, and although it leaves less time on the training ground to work with his players, Puel says the squad have shown that they are up to the challenge of dealing with the extra matches.

“We have different solutions and it’s important that the players keep a good attitude and strong character, to look forward with all the squad to give always a good answer,” he said.

“I think we have the ability and the capacity to play all of these games and it’s important to take it now step by step, game after game to keep always a good attitude.”

Saints host Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie on Wednesday night, and then prepare for a trip to Burnley before hosting Norwich at St Mary’s in the space of seven days.

“We will play in three competitions in a week and I think it’s important to give always a good answer in every game,” he said.

“Wednesday is a very important game, also is Burnley for this moment. Today (Norwich) it’s a disappointment but it’s important with the possibility of qualification for the semi-final and, it’s important for us to have good recovery now, to focus on the next game against Liverpool.”
