Saints beaten by Arsenal

Show/hide article…

Sànchez’s exquisite turn and clinical finish was followed by a late header from substitute Giroud, as the Gunners prevented Saints from climbing as high as eighth in the Premier League.

Saints had enjoyed the better of the first half, but were unable to turn their pressure into a goal, as Petr Čech made two big saves, first from Manolo Gabbiadini and then from Nathan Redmond, before the visitors took control in the final 30 minutes.

Saints manager Claude Puel made just the one change from the side that toughed out a 0-0 draw at Liverpool on Sunday, with Sofiane Boufal dropping to the bench in favour of Redmond.

While it had been a stout defensive display at Anfield, Saints were more on the front foot at the start of this game.

They created an opening after seven minutes, as Cédric worked room for a cross, picking out an unmarked Ryan Bertrand on the far side of the area, with the defender dragging his volley back across the face of goal.

Arsenal, unsurprisingly, looked potent when they burst forward, and they carved out a decent chance when former Saint Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain slipped a pass into Aaron Ramsey, who fired a right-footed shot just wide of the near post.

Saints were doing well to scupper them when they did break into the final third, though, with Forster untested through the first half-an-hour.

It was right at that point when Saints went close again, as James Ward-Prowse whipped in a glorious cross from the right that arced towards Redmond, but his header from a few yards out was deflected away.

Seconds later, an even better chance appeared, as a ball over the top found Dušan Tadić in behind. He chested it down and was about to shoot, when Shkodran Mustafi made a last-ditch sliding tackle. The ball only spun to Gabbiadini on the angle, though, but his low shot was repelled by the legs of Čech.

The game was really opening up at this point and, at the other end, Jack Stephens had to make a brilliant sliding tackle to deny Mesut Özil, as he was released in the box by Danny Welbeck’s clever flick.

The Gunners were dealt a blow ten minutes before the interval, as the lively Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up an injury and was replaced by Héctor Bellerin.

An over-zealous Mustafi tackle on Tadić then presented Saints with an opening five minutes ahead of the interval, but Gabbiadini’s 25-yard free-kick whipped past the upright.

Two minutes later, Redmond drew a superb flying save from Čech, as the Arsenal keeper sprung to his right to tip his fierce long-ranger over the bar.

There was still time left in the half for Ward-Prowse to go into the book for hauling back Welbeck as he broke, but it was Saints who went in happier with their efforts at the break.

They started positively after half-time too, with Gabbiadini finding Steven Davis 20 yards out moments after the restart, but he sliced his first-time effort high and wide.

Still, for as well as Saints were defending, an Arsenal threat is rarely ever too far away, and they went within inches of taking the lead in the 51st minute, as Ramsey turned a square cross from Bellerin just wide.

Unfortunately for Puel’s side, Sánchez, who had been quiet all night up until this point, did not miss the target in the 61st minute.

A slick move worked the ball into his feet 18 yards out, and he twisted and turned to work space on his left foot, before slotting the ball past Forster to give the Gunners a 1-0 lead.

After Forster made an excellent diving stop from Granit Xhaka’s powerful long-range effort, Puel made a double change with 20 minutes left, as Boufal and Shane Long replaced Ward-Prowse and Redmond.

Boufal nearly produced a moment of brilliance shortly after coming on, as he danced past a host of Arsenal defenders on the edge of the area, but his left-footed effort sliced wide.

Puel then sent on Jay Rodriguez in place of Tadić, but there was no chance for him to have an impact before Arsenal doubled the lead.

Sánchez sent a cross to the back post, picking out Ramsey, who nodded the ball back across the box, with Giroud on hand to head past Forster from close range.

Premier League permutations: Chelsea to clinch title? Hull to drop?

Show/hide article…

Arsenal’s victory at Southampton on Wednesday looks to have taken the race for European qualification down to the wire.

It’s just as tight down the bottom, with Middlesbrough’s relegation on Monday leaving Hull and Swansea scrambling to avoid the drop.

Ahead of a mammoth set of fixtures, we examine the weekend’s Premier League permutations…

CHELSEA will clinch the Premier League title if they win at West Brom on Friday.

Even if Antonio Conte’s men drop points, they will be crowned if they avoid defeat and second-placed TOTTENHAM fail to beat Manchester United on Nissan Super Sunday. They will also be champions if Spurs lose against United.

If the Blues slip up at The Hawthorns, they have another chance of clinching a fifth Premier League crown in front of their own fans, with Watford visiting Stamford Bridge on Monday Night Football.

Arsenal kept up their late charge with a 2-0 win at Southampton on Wednesday and now sit three points behind Manchester City and four off Liverpool, with a game in hand on the Reds.

But should ARSENAL lose at Stoke on Saturday and MANCHESTER UNITED fail to win at Spurs, then a victory for LIVERPOOL away at West Ham on Sunday would secure a top-four finish for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

HULL will be relegated alongside Sunderland and Boro if they lose at Crystal Palace on Sunday and SWANSEA beat Sunderland on Saturday.

A draw would secure safety for PALACE, as well as WATFORD and BURNLEY, who would be out of reach of Hull but leave the Tigers on the brink - by virtue of their inferior goal difference - were Swansea to triumph.

The Hornets and Clarets can also control their own destiny with a point in their respective fixtures - Watford travel to Everton on Friday while Burnley are in action on Saturday at Bournemouth.

Shot-shy Southampton target top-half finish

Show/hide article…

Puel’s Southampton, 10th in the table, extended their winless run to five games with a 2-0 home loss to Arsenal on Wednesday.

“There’s the possibility to finish in the first part of the table and that is very important to us,” Puel told reporters.

"If we can have a good result against Middlesbrough, we can prepare for our last two games at home with good possibilities, good intensity.

“Middlesbrough have been playing just one game a week and for us, the most important thing is to put in place a team with good balance, with players who are physically fit and to give a good answer.”

The 55-year-old Frenchman believes he has laid a solid foundation in his first season at St Mary’s but will need to boost the squad’s attacking options if they are to climb higher in the league.

“We put the basics of our play and our philosophy in place this season and what we want to do,” he said.

“I think the consistency was important but there was no clinical edge. It will be important to validate our good work in training sessions on the pitch (next season).”

Southampton have failed to find the net in their last three league games ahead of the trip to Middlesbrough who have won just once in their last 19 matches.

Puel backs Boufal to shine

Show/hide article…

The Morocco international moved to the club last summer from French side Lille and is now approaching the end of his first season with Saints.

Boufal was not able to feature until October, due to a long-term knee injury, while he also missed time with another knee problem at the start of 2017.

There have been moments of magic from him along the way, though, including his sensational Premier League goal against this weekend’s opponents, Middlesbrough, and his wonder effort in the EFL Cup at home to Sunderland.

"I think it was difficult for Sofiane this season,” Puel said at his pre-match press conference. "He came back after five months out and had another injury in the winter.

"It was difficult for him to find the good rhythm, the good intensity.

“He’s a talented player. It’s important for him to keep his spontaneity because we want that to continue, to make the penetration. But it’s important he learns also the good structure and discipline.

"His attitude is good and the last month has been interesting seeing him in the training sessions and in his game time also with the team.

"It’s his first season and I think he can learn this season and we will see a good and fantastic Sofiane in the next season.

“For the moment, I would like him to finish very well with the team, with quality, and with making a difference in the game, but also with a good structure.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel keen to end season on a high

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel is keen to end the club’s winless streak when they face Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Saints lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal on Wednesday night, with their last victory coming away to West Brom on April 8.

After the trip to Teesside, Southampton play Manchester United and Stoke at St Mary’s and Puel is keen to end the season on a high, although he admits Middlesbrough could prove to be tough opposition as they have nothing to lose after their relegation was confirmed with defeat to Chelsea on Monday.

“If we can have a good result against Middlesbrough, we can prepare for our last two games at home with good possibilities, good intensity,” Puel said.

"There’s the possibility to have a good finish in the first part of the table and that is very important to us.

"We are going to play and we have been playing every three days, which is difficult at the end of the season.

"Middlesbrough have been playing just one game a week and for us, the most important thing is to put in place a team with good balance, with players who are physically fit and to give a good answer.

"After that, the second thing is of course that it’s a difficult game to prepare for. It’s important to be ready for this game.

“We saw Sunderland, after their relegation, could play without pressure and did some good work in a good win away. I think it will be the same with Middlesbrough and it will be important to be ready in our heads with good concentration and motivation.”

Despite an indifferent season that could see the Saints finish as high as eighth in the Premier League or as low as 16th, Puel insists he and his backroom staff have laid the foundations for future success.

“We put the basics of our play and our philosophy in place this season and what we want to do. It was very interesting,” he added.

“I think the consistency was important but there was no clinical edge. We need to improve for next season.”
