Your club’s best and worst potential final Premier League position revealed

What are your club’s best and worst potential final positions in the Premier League this season?

We have factored every potential permutation from the remaining 25 fixtures, with the help of transfermarkt.co.uk.

Tottenham, theoretically, remain in the title chase as Chelsea’s sole challengers - despite losing 1-0 to West Ham last week - and have already guaranteed European qualification.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal are the remaining challengers for the two remaining top-four places.

Everton will now finish seventh, regardless of the outcome from their remaining two fixtures, after Arsenal’s 2-0 victory at Southampton on Wednesday night.

Either Hull, Swansea, Crystal Palace, Watford or Burnley could become the third club to join already relegated Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

Amazingly, Palace, Watford and Burnley also each have a chance of finishing in the top half of the table if results go their way.

Check out the graphic below to see where your club could finish…

Stat Pack: Middlesbrough vs Saints

Show/hide article…

Middlesbrough have won only one of their last five home Premier League fixtures against the Saints (D1 L3), though this is the first meeting since March 2005.

The Saints, 1-0 winners over Middlesbrough in the reverse fixture, are looking to do a top-flight double over their opponents for the first time since the 1996/97 campaign.

Boro haven’t kept a clean sheet against Southampton at the Riverside in any of their last seven league meetings since Mark Schwarzer recorded one in a 3-0 win in March 1999.

Four of Middlesbrough’s five Premier League wins this season have come at the Riverside Stadium.

However, only Palace (17) and Sunderland (14) have won fewer points on home soil than Boro (18, W4 D6 L8).

Southampton have won three of their last six Premier League away games, having won just two of their previous 12 on the road this season.

Of goalkeepers to play 100 or more Premier League games, only Boaz Myhill (1.73) and Wayne Hennessey (1.71) have conceded more goals per game than Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Guzan (1.66, 253 in 152 games).

The last Premier League game at the Riverside Stadium saw four goals scored in a 2-2 draw between Middlesbrough and Manchester City – there hasn’t been at least four in back to back top-flight games there since May 2007 (four in a row).

Indeed, the last time this happened in all league games was November 2013 (three in a row) when Middlesbrough were in the Championship.

Middlesbrough have failed to score in 17 Premier League games this season, their joint-most in a single campaign (also 2008-09).

Southampton FC transfer news: Barcelona have reportedly stepped up their interest in midfielder Oriol Romeu

Show/hide article…

Barcelona have made contact about a move for Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu, according to reports in Spain.

The holding midfielder has been heavily linked with a return to Barca, where he spent the majority of his formative years before moving to Chelsea in 2011.

It has been suggested that the Catalan club believe the 25-year-old can become a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets in central midfield.

However, there has so far been no official approach for Romeu, who has been one of Southampton’s most consistent performers this season.

But, according to Marca, Barca have now been in touch about a potential summer move, although it has been claimed that the contact has not been made directly with Southampton.

Romeu only signed a new long-term contract earlier this year so he will not come cheap but that may not put Barca off should they decide he is the man they need this summer.

Virgil van Dijk may have ‘options’ to leave Southampton - Eric Black

Show/hide article…

Southampton assistant manager Eric Black has told talkSPORT defender Virgil van Dijk may have options to leave in the summer but is hopeful he will choose to stay.

Van Dijk is likely to be in demand during the window, with sources telling ESPN FC that a number of clubs including Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal have scouted the Netherlands international.

The Southampton captain has been sidelined since January with a foot injury, and Black said he hoped he would still be a Southampton player when he returned to full fitness.

“We’d love to see Virgil van Dijk stay. He’s obviously the one everyone has been talking about [leaving],” he added. "It would be wonderful [if he stayed], and would be a big step forward for Southampton if we could keep him.

“But he’s one of the best centre-backs in the world, so he may well have options.”

Speaking on Tuesday, Southampton boss Claude Puel said he was confident Van Dijk, who signed a six-year contract last year, would be playing for the club next season.

“The surgery is finished, he can work normally, he can start the gym work and rehab to come back for next season… and with us,” he said.

"He is our captain. He is important for us. He is fantastic player. We wait until the beginning of season to see him again on the pitch.

“He has a long contract, and I think the directors want to keep him.”

Southampton fans’ patience with Puel wears thin after Arsenal defeat

Show/hide article…

Southampton failed to score for a third game in a row as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to an Alexis Sanchez-inspired Arsenal in their rearranged fixture on Wednesday, increasing the pressure on manager Claude Puel.

Saints were the better team for the opening 45 minutes but were made to pay for not taking their chances by Sanchez’s sublime 60th minute opener, before substitute Olivier Giroud headed the second late on.

The defeat maintains Southampton’s record of failing to beat any of the Premier League’s top six this season.

Southampton showed greater attacking intent and had more shots in target in one half of football than they had in the previous two matches combined.

They once again failed to find the net in front of their own fans and striker Manolo Gabbiadini – who started his Saints’ career in red hot form – has now gone five matches without a goal.

6 – This was a much better performance from Southampton than in recent weeks but the fans once again vented their fury at Puel, who is seemingly fighting a losing battle to win them around.

He finally dropped the under-par Sofiane Boufal to the bench, but seems reluctant to take off Dusan Tadic in the wake of the Serbian accusing him of “a lack of respect” for subbing him during games, even though Tadic was again off form.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 6 – Could do nothing to prevent Sanchez’s magical goal on the hour but his kicking again at times let him down, which enraged Nathan Redmond in the first half.

DF Cedric Soares, 6 – Worked hard but was not as effective as he could be, perhaps partly because Arsenal’s wing-back system prevented him from marauding forward.

DF Maya Yoshida, 5 – Marshalled the defence and again displayed a good understanding but was made to look silly for Arsenal’s opener.

DF Jack Stephens, 5 – Made some superb blocks and executed a perfectly timed challenge in the box on Mesut Ozil, but was left in a spin by Sanchez.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 7 – The England defender was relentless in his running down the left flank and deserved more for his efforts.

MF Oriol Romeu, 7 – At his industrious best. Made a memorable, thumping challenge to dispossess Aaron Ramsey without fuss.

MF James Ward-Prowse, 5 – Not as impressive as he has been in recent weeks and when the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, Gabbiadini beat him to it. Second-best throughout.

MF Dusan Tadic, 5 – Was largely frustrating with the ball at his feet but never stopped.

MF Nathan Redmond, 6 – Once compared to Thierry Henry by Puel, Redmond showed plenty of promise but faded after half-time.

MF Steven Davis, 5 – The Northern Irishman was wasteful in dangerous areas and twice reluctant to shoot at goal before overplaying on the edge of the box and being punished by the Gunners’ backline.

FW Manolo Gabbiadini, 6 – Caused problems with his movement and was denied from close range by Petr Cech from a chance he would have buried two months ago.

FW Shane Long, 5 – Had little impact and difficult to see his long-term future at St Mary’s.

MF Sofiane Boufal, 5 – Dropped from the starting lineup after three wasteful matches.

MF Jay Rodriguez, N/R – Came on too late to make an impact.

Southampton defender Jack Stephens insists Boro will be no pushovers

Show/hide article…

Southampton will have to raise their game if they are to beat already relegated Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Saturday, defender Jack Stephens says.

Southampton lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal on Wednesday and the 23-year-old defender is expecting a response from his side, who are 10th.

‘We’ve got to go into the Middlesbrough game confident of winning, which I am sure we will,’ he said.

‘They are very solid at home and are not going to just roll over for us, even though they have just been relegated.’

Southampton are on a rotten run in the league having gone five games without a win and failing to score in their last three. They host Manchester United and Stoke in their final two league games.

Stephens knows Middlesbrough well having spent the early part of the 2015/16 season on loan at the then-Championship club, making six appearances.

How Arsenal can implausibly finish in the top four yet again

Show/hide article…

It couldn’t happen again, could it? Surely in a season as dysfunctional as this one, when Arsene Wenger has increasingly come to resemble a more haunted version of Mr Burns, Arsenal aren’t going to finish in the top four for the 21st consecutive season?

Implausibly, they actually might do it. After beating Southampton 2-0 on Wednesday night and winning four out of their last five league games, Arsenal find themselves four points behind third-placed Liverpool with a game in hand, and three points behind fourth-placed City.

With three matches still to play, this is how the Premier League table looks:

Will Charlie Austin get your vote for Player of the Season?

Show/hide article…

What could have been had Charlie Austin not dislocated his shoulder in early December.

The striker had netted nine goals in 19 appearances and was on course for a stunning first full season at St Mary’s.

However, that injury against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League sidelined him for more than four months.

He’s only just returned to full first-team training now, having missed a significant chunk of the Premier League season and the EFL Cup final at Wembley.

Such is proof of his value, that his nine goals in all competitions means he’s still top-scorer for the club this term.

His finishing in the box is a huge asset and his robust style which he still has from his non-league days has been a real miss.

Manolo Gabbiadini came in and went some way to being Austin’s stand in, with six goals in his first four Saints appearances.

But such has been Saints’ luck this term that the Italian was injured and has struggled to replicate that form in his last few games.

For his impact in the early part of the season, Austin deserves to be a contender for the player of the season.
