Southampton failed to score for a third game in a row as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to an Alexis Sanchez-inspired Arsenal in their rearranged fixture on Wednesday, increasing the pressure on manager Claude Puel.
Saints were the better team for the opening 45 minutes but were made to pay for not taking their chances by Sanchez’s sublime 60th minute opener, before substitute Olivier Giroud headed the second late on.
The defeat maintains Southampton’s record of failing to beat any of the Premier League’s top six this season.
Southampton showed greater attacking intent and had more shots in target in one half of football than they had in the previous two matches combined.
They once again failed to find the net in front of their own fans and striker Manolo Gabbiadini – who started his Saints’ career in red hot form – has now gone five matches without a goal.
6 – This was a much better performance from Southampton than in recent weeks but the fans once again vented their fury at Puel, who is seemingly fighting a losing battle to win them around.
He finally dropped the under-par Sofiane Boufal to the bench, but seems reluctant to take off Dusan Tadic in the wake of the Serbian accusing him of “a lack of respect” for subbing him during games, even though Tadic was again off form.
Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Fraser Forster, 6 – Could do nothing to prevent Sanchez’s magical goal on the hour but his kicking again at times let him down, which enraged Nathan Redmond in the first half.
DF Cedric Soares, 6 – Worked hard but was not as effective as he could be, perhaps partly because Arsenal’s wing-back system prevented him from marauding forward.
DF Maya Yoshida, 5 – Marshalled the defence and again displayed a good understanding but was made to look silly for Arsenal’s opener.
DF Jack Stephens, 5 – Made some superb blocks and executed a perfectly timed challenge in the box on Mesut Ozil, but was left in a spin by Sanchez.
DF Ryan Bertrand, 7 – The England defender was relentless in his running down the left flank and deserved more for his efforts.
MF Oriol Romeu, 7 – At his industrious best. Made a memorable, thumping challenge to dispossess Aaron Ramsey without fuss.
MF James Ward-Prowse, 5 – Not as impressive as he has been in recent weeks and when the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, Gabbiadini beat him to it. Second-best throughout.
MF Dusan Tadic, 5 – Was largely frustrating with the ball at his feet but never stopped.
MF Nathan Redmond, 6 – Once compared to Thierry Henry by Puel, Redmond showed plenty of promise but faded after half-time.
MF Steven Davis, 5 – The Northern Irishman was wasteful in dangerous areas and twice reluctant to shoot at goal before overplaying on the edge of the box and being punished by the Gunners’ backline.
FW Manolo Gabbiadini, 6 – Caused problems with his movement and was denied from close range by Petr Cech from a chance he would have buried two months ago.
FW Shane Long, 5 – Had little impact and difficult to see his long-term future at St Mary’s.
MF Sofiane Boufal, 5 – Dropped from the starting lineup after three wasteful matches.
MF Jay Rodriguez, N/R – Came on too late to make an impact.
