Norwegian manager propelled by top-scoring duo

Show/hide article…

Providing 17 points apiece as the top-scoring players in Gameweek 36, Southampton’s Fraser Forster (£5.0m) and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (£10.4m) were key members of Oystein Pettersen’s triumphant Fantasy Premier League line-up.

Forster excelled with a clean sheet, a penalty save and three bonus points over his two fixtures against Liverpool and Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Oystein’s decision to swap De Bruyne in for Man City team-mate Leroy Sane (£7.7m) with his Gameweek 35 Wildcard paid big dividends.

The Belgian moved into fifth place in the FPL midfield standings thanks to a goal, two assists and maximum bonus points from the 5-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

Forster and De Bruyne were among a series of inspired Wildcard decisions as Oystein’s line-up amassed an unbeaten 136 points, charging up the rankings to 18,275 – his highest overall position since Gameweek 6.

With Double Gameweeks 36 and 37 in mind, the Norwegian manager wisely retained Southampton’s Jack Stephens (£4.2m) and Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (£11.6m) in his rebuilding programme.

While Stephens registered eight points, Oystein’s decision to play his Triple Captain chip on Sanchez earned a huge return of 42.

Despite blanking at home to Manchester United in the first of his two fixtures, the Chilean’s goal in the 2-0 win at St Mary’s Stadium ensured that Oystein benefited from Sanchez’s first double-figure score since Gameweek 25.

Elsewhere, Chelsea pair Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) and Diego Costa (£10.5m) combined for 20 points in Monday night’s win over Middlesbrough, while Gabriel Jesus (£8.9m) delivered an assist in Man City’s victory over the Eagles.

In his fourth season as an FPL manager, Oystein still has his Bench Boost chip to play and is on target to surpass his previous highest rank of 33,425 back in 2014/15.

As Manager of the Week, he earns a copy of FIFA 17, a Nike Ordem 4 match ball and an FPL mug, all packaged in a Fantasy Premier League rucksack.

QK Southampton warn off the circling “vultures”

Show/hide article…

QK SOUTHAMPTON have issued a ‘hands off’ warning to any clubs coveting their players.

Assistant secretary/director of football Mick Thomas insists that QK’s squad are staying put for next season.

Outside interest perked up in February when the club announced that popular boss Mark Sainsbury was due to stand down at the end of the 2016/17 campaign after three years at the helm.

That, though, is no longer the case as Sainsbury has had a change of heart.

A relieved Thomas confirmed: “Mark has thankfully decided to wrap up this season, recharge his spirits and pick up again in August after a summer off.

“When we announced he was leaving, the vultures started circling in the hope of snatching players off us.

“But Mark is staying now – and so are the players,” he stressed.

QK enjoyed a promising 2016/17 season, finishing fifth in the Hampshire Premier League Senior Division and reaching their first ever HPL Senior Cup final.

Puel’s Southampton days numbered as Saints sound out Portuguese pair

Show/hide article…

Southampton are expected to dismiss Claude Puel this month, and have approached Hull City manager Marco Silva to gauge his interest in taking over at St Mary’s next season.

Silva will be a free agent if Hull are relegated and he is on Southampton’s shortlist if, as expected, Puel leaves the club after just one campaign at the helm on the south coast.

Puel’s position will be formally reviewed at the end of the season and Southampton insist they will not make any decisions on their manager until then. But the Frenchman is pessimistic about his chances of staying and with good reason - Saints have already started sounding out candidates via intermediaries to replace him.

Carlos Carvalhal of Sheffield Wednesday is another on Saints’ radar, having considered him before opting for Puel a year ago.

But the 53-year-old Carvalhal is in the midst of a playoff battle with the Owls and has never managed in the English top flight, whereas Silva has impressed many since taking over at Hull City in January. He inherited a team heading for certain relegation and has given them a fighting chance of safety, even after having to sell Jake Livermore and Robert Snodgrass.

Silva signed an 18-month deal when he joined, but one with a break clause this summer if Hull are relegated. That means that he could well be a free agent this summer.

In the same way that Carvalhal is refusing to entertain any offers until Wednesday’s promotion bid is over – one way or another - Silva and his representatives have been very clear that his only focus this month is on trying to keep Hull in the Premier League.

They are currently one point behind Swansea City with two games left, although they have the harder fixtures, against Crystal Palace away and Tottenham Hotspur at home. Swansea, who have a better goal difference than Hull, face relegated Sunderland away then West Bromwich Albion at home.

While Saints would be an attractive option if Hull go down and Silva leaves, there is also potential interest from FC Porto, currently coached by Nuno Espirito Santo. Silva has not worked in Portugal since being dismissed by Sporting CP in June 2015 but the opportunity to work at Porto would appeal to him if it were offered.

Paul Merson’s predictions: Chelsea to seal title? Arsenal to maintain top-four fight?

Show/hide article…

Paul Merson is back for another round of Premier League predictions ahead of a huge weekend of action.

Chelsea could win the title at West Brom on Friday Night Football, live on Sky Sports 1, while the relegation battle nears its completion as Hull, Swansea and Crystal Palace all vie to avoid the drop.

So who is the Soccer Saturday pundit tipping for victory? Read on to find out…

I think this will be a hard game for Chelsea. West Brom have been on a poor run but they have been a little unlucky. They’ll make it very difficult, be as good as ever on set-plays, and if they can score first then Chelsea may have to wait until Monday night to win the title.

Watford are on holiday. It’s understandable because they’ve done just about to enough to stay up, but they’ve been so poor lately and I can’t see that changing. Everton lost against Swansea last time out, which was a poor result, but they’ll want to finish strongly at home.

This will be a hard game for Man City and I think this will be an entertaining one with a lot of goals. Pep Guardiola’s team need a win to finish in the top four and Craig Shakespeare will want a result to put himself in a better position to get the job on a permanent basis.

Fair play to him and his team who have kept going despite ensuring survival, but I still think City will have too much for them.

I’m doing this game on Soccer Saturday and I’m looking forward to it. Bournemouth have a right go normally and Burnley finally won their last away game at Palace.

Both of these managers have done brilliantly, but Sean Dyche just pips it for me because Burnley have come up and he’s done a top job to keep them in the Premier League. That being said, I think Bournemouth will edge it.

Middlesbrough needed a result to stay up at Chelsea and the gulf between them was unreal. It was men against boys stuff.

Southampton have hit a brick wall and Claude Puel needs to finish with a couple of results, but I’m going to go for Boro here, it’s their last game at home in the Premier League and there’s no reason for them not to go out on the attack and have a go.

It’s all about timing and Swansea have started playing very well. They went to Watford a few weeks back for a draw, it didn’t work out and since then they’ve just decided to go for it.

This is a great opportunity for them. All you can ask at this stage is for it to be in your hands and if Swansea score first I can’t see Sunderland battling back.

It’s a nice game for Arsenal, they need a win and I expect them to do just that. If they can then you’d fancy them to nick a top-four spot, especially as they’d put the pressure on Liverpool before Sunday’s game.

Stoke are another side to have switched off and it’s hard to see them getting a result here. Arsenal have still got the FA Cup as well but top four should still be their priority.

Whoever scores first here will win for me. If Hull do then you worry for Palace with their defensive problems. Swansea winning on Saturday would really put the pressure on here and Hull probably need a victory either way, which would drag Palace right back into it.

Sam Allardyce will be desperate for a win as they won’t want the battle to go to the last game of the season.

It all depends on which West Ham turns up, whether it’s the team from the last few months or the one who beat Tottenham last week. It’s a big game for them because another win could wipe away the cobwebs at the London Stadium and help them feel much more positive about the place next year.

You just don’t know with Liverpool against so-called lesser teams. I would probably fancy them more if they were going to Man City. There’s something missing in these games and they need to sort that out if they want to push on.

I don’t see anything but a Spurs win here. It’s the same situation as last week with Manchester United having a big game on the Thursday night, and they could get turned over here.

But this game is all about Tottenham for me, it’s the last game at White Hart Lane and it should be a special atmosphere.
