Puel’s injury update

Show/hide article…

The Saints boss will monitor his players for signs of fatigue ahead of Wednesday night’s game, following Sunday’s hard-fought 0-0 draw at Liverpool, but it is generally positive news on the fitness front.

Austin and Targett both returned to action with the Under-23s at Manchester City last Friday night and Puel says he will have no hesitation including them between now and the end of the season if he thinks they are ready.

“There are no new injuries,” said Puel at his pre-match press conference. “Perhaps there is a little tiredness, but we will see this over the next day or so.

"It’s interesting to see again Charlie Austin and Matt Targett starting with the Under-23s.

"They have come back and worked hard in the training sessions, but we will see if they can participate until the end of the season.

“Of course, when they have had four or five months without playing games and having the intensity and rhythm it’s always difficult, but I am happy with their work and we will see if they can play for the next games.”

On Austin, Puel added: "He works very well. It’s just now to see if he can continue this work, if he can find the good physical level.

"Perhaps it will be interesting for us and for him to see him in the game. We have possibilities with Gabbiadini, Long, Rodriguez and now Charlie.

"It’s a good thing – I have a choice, but it’s important to see every time the possibility to play in a good rhythm and intensity and if I decide he can bring something for the team I will not hesitate.”

LISTEN: Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk ‘could play for any team in the world’, former Southampton star tells

Show/hide article…

Former Southampton defender Francis Benali has told talkSPORT Virgil van Dijk is good enough to play for any club in the world, and that he’d be a huge loss for the Saints if he leaves this summer.

Centre-back Van Dijk is one of the most in-demand players in the Premier League ahead of the summer transfer window.

The likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been linked with the 25-year-old Dutchman as they all look to strengthen in defence.

Saints boss Claude Puel has recently hinted that Van Dijk could end up staying at St Mary’s next season, with club bosses keen to keep him and under no pressure to sell.

However, reports claim Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is still hopeful of landing Van Dijk and could table a bid too good to turn down, as he plots another raid of the south coast club.

And Benali says Southampton would be left with a gaping hole in their squad if the ‘flawless’ defender becomes the latest Saints star to move to Anfield.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the former full-back said: “It’s been a familiar picture at Southampton for a few seasons now, and Virgil is the obvious player who is being talked about now.

“He is absolutely class. He’s a player I could see slotting into any team in the world, with the performances I’ve seen. There’s nothing he can’t do.

“He’s a huge presence on the pitch, and not just in a physical sense. He’s good both defensively and offensively. It always seems like he’s got another gear and that he’s playing in cruise mode. He reads the game well, he’s a threat in the opposition’s box as well, he can score goals. He’s just never seems to get flustered. He’s so confident on the ball.”

Transfer ALERT! Galatasaray star ‘refusing to train’ amid Manchester United and Southampton links

Show/hide article…

The future of Manchester United and Southampton target Bruma has been plunged even further into doubt after he reportedly refused to train.

According to reports in Turkey, Bruma was one of four Galatasaray players who boycotted training in protest of manager Igor Tudor.

The boss, who only took charge in February, has come under heavy fire after a poor run of results has left the club fourth in the table and 13 points off the pace.

Bruma has seemingly fallen out of favour too, and was hooked after just 18 minutes against Kasimpasa, despite not being injured, with Gala eventually losing 3-1.

Now it seems as though the winger’s time in Turkey could be coming to an end which could come as good news for both United and Southampton.

The Premier League duo are keen on a deal for the 22-year-old Portugese, who has scored ten goals in 26 league appearances this term.

The forming Sporting Lisbon ace has a little over a year left on his current deal and Galatasaray are expected to cash in on him when the window opens.

Will James Ward-Prowse get your vote for Player of the Season?

Show/hide article…

Will James Ward-Prowse get your vote for the Daily Echo’s Southampton FC Player of the Season?

Ward-Prowse has provided a respectable four assists and as many goals this season for Saints.

He has become a mainstay in the starting side for the first time during the second half of the term and has become a fully-fledged England international.

It’s been a partial breakthrough season for Ward-Prowse. You wouldn’t completely call him a fully established player yet, but he’s made further progress and, if he can finish off some of those free-kicks more often, then he’d be a massive asset.

The 22-year-old, who became Saints’ longest-serving player after Jose Fonte’s exit, dropped out the team in the 0-0 draw against Hull for the first time in 15 games in all competitions - a run which stems back since mid-January.

But he was back in the starting side for the goalless draw at Anfield.

During that spell he has provided a great balance to the team alongside Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond in the attacking three behind the striker in the 4-2-3-1 formation.

The level of performances overall and the excellent display in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United drew the attention of England boss Gareth Southgate, who subsequently called up the Saints man to the Three Lions squad in March.

He made his national team debut as a late substitute in a 1-0 defeat to Germany.

The very fact he’s made progress again makes him a candidate for the Player of the Season Award.

Oriol Romeu beats Virgil van Dijk as Saints’ Player of the Season

Show/hide article…

It is the time of the season when supporters up and down the land will be having their annual debate about which of their team’s stars deserves the accolade of Player of the Season.

Usually the preference is to plump for the goal-getting striker or midfield assist king, or in the case of a struggling side, their overworked goalkeeper or defensive rock.

Considering Charlie Austin remains Southampton’s top scorer despite sitting out the past five months with a dislocated shoulder and that standout defender Virgil van Dijk has also been sidelined for much of the second half of the season, fans have to look elsewhere when it comes to dishing out the prize. While on the face of it Oriol Romeu is a less eye-catching selection than a fully firing Austin or the imperious Van Dijk – arguably the best centre back in the Premier League – he is a no less worthy recipient.

Certainly given his outstanding contribution to Southampton’s cause over the past nine months, the tough-tackling Spaniard is not a default selection based on the lack of competition due to the reasons detailed above. Romeu has been nothing short of sensational since stepping into the not inconsiderable void left by Victor Wanyama’s summer reunion with Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham.

In an age when defensive midfielders are now more valued than ever, thanks largely to the efforts of soon to be back-to-back title winner N’Golo Kante, Romeu has proved he can stand toe-to-toe with any of his contemporaries in the role, even being compared by his boss Claude Puel to Kante himself.

Wanyama was never going to be an easy player for Southampton to replace and while their scouting team’s much-hyped black box system identified Jordy Clasie and Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg as potential successors to the Kenyan, the answer was staring them in the face.

While Clasie and Hojbjerg have both failed to fully get to grips with the blood and thunder of Premier League football, Romeu has gone from strength to strength, imprinting himself as one of the first names on manager Puel’s teamsheet.

The way he patrolled the centre of the park in Southampton’s hard-fought 0-0 draw at Liverpool on Sunday and domination of Manchester United’s star-studded midfield in the EFL Cup final were a joy to behold and two high profile examples of why he has been such a shining light this season when few of his teammates have managed to hit the same heights.

It is almost certain to be an identical story when Arsenal visit the south coast on Wednesday and while Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka were able to impose themselves against an under-strength United last Sunday, the pair – assuming Xhaka is fit – will certainly know they have been in a battle when they board their return coach to London.

Romeu has taken the long route to the top since first being spotted as future star as a graduate of Barcelona’s academy and eyebrows were raised when Southampton forked out £5 million to sign him from Chelsea after four unfulfilled years at Stamford Bridge.

Even last season he struggled to hold down a regular place in the team but patience has certainly paid off for Romeu and Southampton this term. The £5m fee now looks one of the bargains of the century, especially when you compare it to the £34m Arsenal handed over to Borussia Monchengladbach for Xhaka, who for much of the season has looked a poor imitation of Romeu.

Barring their heroic cup run it has been a forgettable campaign for Southampton, but certainly one that will live long in the memory for Romeu.

Southampton v Arsenal preview: Laurent Koscielny a doubt for Gunners

Show/hide article…

Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of Laurent Koscielny ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Southampton.

The defender is struggling with a calf problem but manager Arsene Wenger is hoping he will pass a fitness test to be involved at St Mary’s.

“We have some worries for Koscielny he might not be available, he will have a test today,” Wenger said. “We will make the decision after training.”

Arsenal boosted their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League thanks to Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester United. However, the Gunners remain seven points behind third-placed Liverpool with two games in hand and six points behind Man City in fourth with one game in hand, leaving the clash against Southampton as another must-win encounter.

When asked about the race for the top four, the Frenchman added: “For us, we just want to win out games. That’s all we can do. We had a bad spell but we have recovered from it. We need to show we can be consistent until the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, Southampton manager Claude Puel could welcome back striker Charlie Austin, who has been out with a long-term injury.

Austin, who still the club’s top scorer this season with nine goals, has been absent since December with a shoulder injury but he returned to action for Southampton’s U23s on Friday night and could be in contention to face the Gunners.

“It was important to see a game with Charlie,” Puel said. "Charlie and Matt Targett played for one hour, they have worked hard in training sessions and we will see if they can participate this season.

“With Charlie, four or five months without a game means the intensity is very difficult. I am happy with his work and we will see if he can play in the next games. He has worked very well. We need to see if he can continue this work and get physically fit it will be interesting for him.”

Matt Targett, who played alongside Austin in Southampton’s U23s on Friday, could return from a hamstring problem.

Defender Virgil van Dijk (ankle) and back-up goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

Granit Xhaka limped out of the win over Manchester United but should be fit to face Southampton.

Lucas Perez is also available following a thigh problem but Shkodran Mustafi (thigh) and Santi Cazorla (Achilles) remain sidelined.

Southampton are looking to win three consecutive home league matches against Arsenal for the first time since 1985.

Arsenal are winless in their five previous away visits to St Mary’s in the Premier League, last winning there in December 2003 (D3 L2).

Wenger has won only 25% of his Premier League games at St. Mary’s (two of eight) as opposed to 60% at the Dell (three of five).

However, the Gunners did beat Southampton 5-0 away in the fourth round of the FA Cup this season. Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick in that match, while Danny Welbeck got the other two.

Shane Long scored twice the last time Southampton hosted Arsenal in the Premier League, a 4-0 rout on Boxing Day 2015.

Wenger’s side have lost five of their last six away Premier League games - the same number they’d lost in their previous 27 on the road in the competition.

Southampton have failed to score in three of their last four home Premier League, the exception being a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Southampton have managed just 10 shots on target across their last five Premier League games and recorded none against Liverpool in the 0-0 draw on Sunday.

Manolo Gabbiadini scored four goals in his first three Premier League appearances (248 mins), but since then he’s failed to score and attempted just one shot on target in 306 Premier League minutes (five apps).

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has provided seven assists for Arsenal in the Premier League, including two in his last match against Manchester United. This is the same total as his previous five seasons combined with Arsenal.

It’s another side who like goalless draws for Arsenal and it’s another must-win game with the slender chance of a top-four finish still just about there.

Southampton have caused them problems over the last few seasons, but I think Claude Puel is asking a lot of his team to go out and produce another dogged performance. That result against Liverpool must have taken a lot out of them.

Aaron Ramsey is playing in more of an advanced role and he’s much better when he can make those runs, while it also brings better balance to the team with him playing along with Danny Welbeck.

Their movement brings more out of Mesut Ozil compared to the static Olivier Giroud.

They are the three most important Arsenal players at the moment as Alexis Sanchez is just pretending to be really interested, coming deep to get the ball rather than really having a go at defenders.

The other week he didn’t trouble Jesus Navas and he didn’t even have a go at the young lad Axel Tuanzebe on Sunday.

I think the pressure is off in terms of the top four and we know that suits this Arsenal team, so I’m expecting them to win this, but even if they do I still won’t be expecting them to qualify for the Champions League.

Charlie predicts: 0-2 and Ramsey to score first - 55/1 with Sky Bet

Arsenal are Sky Bet’s 21/20 favourites with Southampton 12/5 for the victory while the draw is priced at 13/5.

Wenger’s men were cut from 8/1 to 4/1 for a top-four finish after gaining ground on Liverpool at the weekend thanks to the Saints, who are 14/1 to grind out another goalless draw.

Alexis Sanchez is the 4/1 favourite in the first goalscorer betting with Manolo Gabbiadini considered the hosts’ main threat at 6/1 to break the deadlock.

Southampton v Arsenal

Show/hide article…

Southampton have no new injury concerns, although manager Claude Puel has said fatigue may be a factor in his team selection.

Charlie Austin is nearing a return after five months out with a dislocated shoulder, while Matt Targett could also feature before the end of the season.

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny is a doubt because of a calf injury.

Granit Xhaka should be available despite aggravating a similar problem against Manchester United.

Steve Wilson: "One swallow doesn’t make a summer, but Arsenal’s win over Manchester United on Sunday has given them a realistic shot at sneaking into fourth place and a Champions League qualification spot.

"That win - combined with Southampton’s obdurate draw against Liverpool at Anfield - means that if the Gunners were to win all four of their remaining games they could go into the FA Cup final on a real high.

“Southampton were thrashed by Arsenal at St Mary’s in the FA Cup, but seem newly determined not to allow their league season to peter out with a whimper. Some say that Claude Puel’s place at the club could depend on it.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel on the future of Virgil van Dijk: "It was a bad injury for him and for us.

"Now the surgery is finished he can work normally and be ready for next season - with us.

"He’s our captain and I have said he is important for us. He has authority, the leadership of the team, he is a fantastic player.

“It’s important for us, of course, to wait until the beginning of the season to see him on the pitch with Southampton. He has a long contract and the directors want to keep him.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger dismisses working alongside a director of football: "As long as I’m manager of Arsenal Football Club, I will decide what happens on the technical front, that’s it.

“I don’t know what director of football means. Is it somebody who stands in the road and directs play right and left? I don’t understand, and I never did understand, what it means.”
