Liverpool confident of securing £50m deal for Premier League ace

Show/hide article…

“His surgery is finished and he can work normally and go into the gym for rehabilitation and come back next season with us … with us”

Kop boss Jurgen Klopp has put Van Dijk - also interesting Manchester City and Chelsea - at the top of his shopping list.

The Dutch defender is understood to be keen on a switch to Anfield provided Klopp’s men finish in the top four.

Saints boss Puel insists his captain, currently sidelined with an ankle injury, will start next season at St Mary’s.

But the reality is if Liverpool stump up the cash and can offer Champions League football, Van Dijk is likely to be on his way.

Claude Puel adamant Virgil van Dijk will stay at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is adamant that Virgil van Dijk has not played his last game for Southampton and believes that the club’s directors are preparing to turn down all offers this summer for their captain.

Van Dijk required surgery in January on foot ligaments and Puel has now accepted that the 25-year-old Dutchman – who is the subject of competing interest from Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool – will not play again this season.

Southampton have previously cashed in on their most saleable assets – but generally always at the moment of their own choosing – and Puel is confident that will not be this year. Southampton paid just £13 million to sign Van Dijk from Celtic in 2015 when Arsenal were also interested but his value has now soared to around £50 million.

"Virgil had a bad injury, but now it’s OK, his surgery is finished and he can work normally and go into the gym for rehabilitation and come back next season - with us,” said Puel. "He’s our captain and he’s important for us. He’s matured and taken leadership on the team; he’s a fantastic player we know well.

“He’s important for us and now, of course, we will wait to the beginning of the season to see him on the pitch with Southampton. He has a long contract and the directors will want to keep him.”

Fraser Forster, ‘The Great Wall’ is striving to be England No 1

Show/hide article…

In Spain, they called him the Great Wall. It’s easy to see why as he stands between the posts on one of Southampton’s 3G pitches. By any measure, Fraser Forster is big.

Forster has been a standard bearer of consistency since he joined the Saints in 2014.

A difficult start to this season aside, he has been as reliable as any wall. When he is at his best, turning away shots with the reflexes of a man half his size, it’s hard to imagine even Genghis Khan and a Mongolian horde being able to find a gap past Forster.

But when James Milner stepped up to take a penalty against him on Sunday, the Liverpool man still must have been confident. After all, history told the veteran midfielder that when he faces Forster from the spot, the taker always triumphs.

Sat in a dugout at Southampton’s pristine training complex, with just over 24 hours between him and that pressure moment against Liverpool, Forster told Sportsmail about his previous encounters with Milner: 'We were both at Newcastle when we were younger. And obviously at England (we have been in squads together).

‘That was the first competitive penalty that I’ve faced against him. On the training pitch we’ve faced each other quite a bit.’

It was a rare occasion when a penalty taker deserved no blame for a save. Hit low and hard to Forster’s right, few would have backed this to be the moment that Milner’s seven-and-a-half year run without missing a spot kick ended.

It was, Forster superbly reaching the ball with one of those shovel-like hands and turning it around the post.

‘I think that could well be the first penalty I’ve saved from him to be honest, even in training,’ he revealed.

While much has been made of the mind games before the penalty, with the goalkeeper speaking to Milner and scuffing the spot, Forster does not believe it had much of an impact.

‘I think a lot of clubs now try and delay the taking of a penalty,’ he continued. ‘It just puts a little bit more pressure on and gives the taker a bit more time to think about it. With the player he is, I don’t think it would have affected him too much.’

Sunday was another marker of a strange season for Southampton. An introduction to European football ended earlier, in Forster’s view, than it should have. They were moments from glory in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United and probably deserved to win it.

This feels like a slight blip in the consistent improvement at St. Mary’s during their stunning rise from League One. One day there is an expectation both here and in Forster’s mind that Champions League football will come.

Even before then, Southampton could still have a big say in how the Premier League’s top clubs finish. Arsenal, currently sixth, are the visitors on Wednesday night, while fifth-placed Manchester United come to town on May 17.

The 29-year-old is looking forward to the challenge: 'Everyone wants to play the big teams. When you’re a kid you always dream of playing in games like that. You get to test yourself against the best players in the world.

‘We’ve got a run of playing the big teams, that’s just how it’s worked out, and it’s fantastic to play them.’

And Forster, probably one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers, wants it for himself more regularly. 'Looking back, I got to play Champions League football at Celtic. To play in competitions like that is something a bit special.

‘That’s definitely what every player strives for, to play in those games week in and week out, to play Champions League football. That’s the ambition that not only I but every player in football has.’

The Hexham-born stopper is definitely one of the top goalkeepers in the English class, yet he has failed to make an appearance at either of the tournaments he has been called up for. The presence of Joe Hart, someone he is close to, has stopped him from achieving more for the Three Lions.

The six-cap star admits that he is aiming to be first choice by the time Russia 2018 rolls around.

'That’s what you want to do when you grow up. You want to go to World Cups and play. If I did that it would be a very special moment for me.

'I’d love to be England’s No 1, I’m not going to deny that. Joe’s quite rightly the No 1.

‘I just have to keep working here and try and play as well as I can here. If I can, it puts pressure on him.’

Forster has already earned his admirers in Europe, most obviously with that nickname of La Gran Muralla, earned after a stunning display in a 2-1 win against Barcelona for Celtic. Could he be tempted to follow his international colleague Hart, who has spent the season on loan at Torino, to the continent?

'I’ve always said I’d love the experience of going abroad at some point. I’m not sure where, but it’d be fantastic to embrace that, to learn another language, experience another culture, it’s something unique.

‘Not many English players do it but I’d be open to it, I think it could be something special.’

Special is how Forster views his position. He speaks openly about the uniqueness of playing in goal, how one error can overwhelm nine brilliant saves in the eyes of those watching. Mistakes are put under the spotlight, not least in the pressure cooker environment of the Premier League.

That speaks for a pressure every footballer faces that has been in focus over the last week. Aaron Lennon’s plight has highlighted the strain, but Forster believes the sporting world is taking positive steps across the board.

‘Talking about mental health issues, football is such a unique environment - as is sport in general compared to the outside world,’ he said.

'It’s no surprise that there’ll be a lot of mental health issues. There’s a lot more focus on it now and a lot more support.

'You just need those people you really trust and who really care for you and are there for you no matter what, not just as someone who plays football.

‘It’s hard at times, but everyone wants Aaron Lennon to come back and show how good a player he is.’

Charlie Nicholas predicts Premier League, Champions League and Europa League action

Show/hide article…

Charlie Nicholas provides us with his midweek predictions with action in the Premier League, Champions League and Europa League.

Arsenal travel to Southampton in the solitary top-flight fixture as the Gunners look to boost their chances of a top-four finish.

Looking ahead to the European games, Real Madrid and Juventus look all but certain of progressing in the Champions League, while Manchester United and Ajax are both strong favourites to reach the Europa League final.

Here’s what Charlie is predicting for the five clashes…

Juventus’ experienced defence obviously controlled Monaco’s attack beautifully in the first leg, as they did with Barcelona for 180 minutes in the previous round.

I think we’ll see another thoroughly professional performance from the Old Lady’s backline and they’ll be ready for whatever is thrown at them.

Monaco will come out and look to attack from the start and Juve will just be patient and have the quality to hurt their visitors on the counter-attack.

Gonzalo Higuain hasn’t been that prolific in the Champions League this season but he’s been on fire in Serie A and I’d expect him to send Juve cruising through to the final.

Charlie predicts: 2-1 and Higuain to score first - 18/1 with Sky Bet

I couldn’t have got it any more wrong in the first leg, but I don’t think anyone expected Real Madrid to have it that easy. At 1-0 down I still thought Atletico had a chance but obviously not now.

Cristiano Ronaldo got all the headlines for his hat-trick but I’ve never seen Atletico play that badly and it must have been one of their worst performances since Diego Simeone took over.

Antoine Griezmann failed to impress but I was really disappointed with the way they failed to utilise Kevin Gameiro’s pace against such a fragile backline.

You can see the reaction Zinedine Zidane is getting out of his players with James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata both bagging doubles at the weekend, also showing the quality in cover for Gareth Bale.

I could see Atletico perhaps building some hope by taking the lead but it’s just too difficult to keep this Real attack out while trying to chase the game.

Charlie predicts: 2-1 and Gameiro to score first - 35/1 with Sky Bet

It’s another side who like goalless draws for Arsenal and it’s another must-win game with the slender chance of a top-four finish still just about there.

Southampton have caused them problems over the last few seasons, but I think Claude Puel is asking a lot of his team to go out and produce another dogged performance. That result against Liverpool must have taken a lot out of them.

Aaron Ramsey is playing in more of an advanced role and he’s much better when he can make those runs, while it also brings better balance to the team with him playing along with Danny Welbeck.

Their movement brings more out of Mesut Ozil compared to the static Olivier Giroud.

They are the three most important Arsenal players at the moment as Alexis Sanchez is just pretending to be really interested, coming deep to get the ball rather than really having a go at defenders.

The other week he didn’t trouble Jesus Navas and he didn’t even have a go at the young lad Axel Tuanzebe on Sunday.

I think the pressure is off in terms of the top four and we know that suits this Arsenal team, so I’m expecting them to win this, but even if they do I still won’t be expecting them to qualify for the Champions League.

Charlie predicts: 0-2 and Ramsey to score first - 55/1 with Sky Bet

I wasn’t surprised by the team Jose Mourinho went with on Sunday but I was surprised with just how negative he was, especially when you consider there probably wasn’t too much difference in the values of the two sides’ line-ups.

He now has the pressure on him because he’s the one who has put the eggs in this Europa League basket, although he’ll probably get the last laugh with two trophies from a team that has not been very impressive.

They’ll have to be more adventurous here because the Old Trafford fans demand that, especially after he did his new friend Arsene Wenger a big favour!

They’ll bring Marcus Rashford back to add his pace to Antony Martial’s and they’ll be able to be patient and pick Celta Vigo off on the counter-attack.

Charlie predicts: 3-1 and Rashford to score first - 33/1 with Sky Bet

This was another first leg that really surprised me. I thought Lyon were a banker to meet Manchester United in the final.

The new Ajax boss Peter Bosz has done incredibly well to get them back on track after Frank de Boer left and they obviously had a huge weekend to keep them in the Eredivisie title race.

They’re doing it again with a bunch of kids and you worry how they’ll cope with the pressure on them now.

Ajax can concede a few and, having put faith in Lyon for the first leg, I’m going for them to come through here on away goals with a couple of goals from Alexandre Lacazette.

Charlie predicts: 3-0 and Lacazette to score first - 30/1 with Sky Bet

Puel backs Gabbiadini and plans Austin comeback

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel has backed Manolo Gabbiadini to rediscover the hot goalscoring form that saw him score six goals in his first four Saints appearances.

The Italian arrived for £14.5m on January transfer deadline day from Napoli and hit the ground running.

But after a groin injury sidelined him for three games, he has not been able to replicate that same scorching form in front of goal.

Saints have scored just twice in four games and Puel, after a very defensive display in the 0-0 draw at Liverpool, is urging his side to go on the attack against Arsenal tomorrow night at St Mary’s.

“Sometimes it’s difficult when you come back from an injury, it’s always difficult to find the first game after with good rhythm and good intensity,” Puel said of Gabbiadini.

"Of course we played a difficult opponent for a striker. Against Liverpool it’s difficult for a striker.

"He played alone between two or three defenders, it’s difficult to have the good ball.

"Like many strikers his quality is in the box and we need to have the ball high up the pitch on the opponent to have the final shot and find the clinical edge.

"Other teams have to play high up the pitch with good possession.

"It’s important to play as high as possible.

"We played against a good team, Liverpool wanted the three points for their position in the table.

"It was difficult but against Arsenal it will be another game.

“I think this game will be open and perhaps we will see more opportunities for them and for us.”

Puel plans to give another one of his strikers, Charlie Austin, some game time before the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has been out since early December, but returned for Saints’ under-23s on Friday night as he targets a first team comeback from a dislocated shoulder.

Asked if Austin will be involved against the Gunners, he said: "I cannot give away the squad but we will see until the end of the season if he can come back on the squad.

"I don’t know when, but he’s work very well and it’s also important to find a good rhythm and intensity.

"We have different possibilities in attack with Long, Rodriguez, Gabbiadini and now Austin.

"I hope he can continue to work like this and perhaps before the last game we can see him in the group.

“It will be a good reward for him and I will be happy to see him again in the group.”

The St Mary’s boss feels it’s vital to give the former QPR man some minutes before the season’s end.

“It will be interesting for us to see him in games,” he said.

“It’s important to play him to find a good rhythm and intensity and if he can bring something to the team I will not hesitate.”

He added: "It was an injury in his shoulder and not a lower body problem.

"It’s shame because the under-23s for example it was the last game for them and I hoped he could play more with a good opposition and continue this work and progress.

"It’s important to find the intensity of the game, to work, defend, attack and repeat those runs.

“All this is important, a player can do a very good work in training, but nothing replaces a game for intensity.”

Saints to face Boro side ‘devastated’ after suffering record-equalling Premier League relegation

Show/hide article…

SAINTS travel to Middlesbrough this Saturday with their hosts ‘devastated’ after suffering Premier League relegation last night.

Boro, promoted last year, went straight back down after a 3-0 loss at champions-elect Chelsea.

Boro boss Steve Agnew described the devastation in the visiting dressing room and insisted his own future after taking control when Aitor Karanka was sacked was irrelevant.

Agnew said: "I don’t think it’s about my situation. It’s about the football club.

"It’s a Premier League football club in terms of everything about it. The supporters, the stadium, the training ground, the infrastructure is all there.

"The bottom line is we haven’t won enough games and haven’t scored enough goals.

Among the Boro side last night was ex-Saint Calum Chambers, who is on loan from Arsenal.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte applauded the Boro supporters and consoled some players and staff after they were consigned to a record-equalling fourth relegation from the Premier League.

The Chelsea head coach said: "I felt in my heart to go and to clap these fans and also to tell (them) good luck for next season.

“It’s important to have a great respect and to clap this type of situation. I think this situation happens only in England. I don’t remember in Italy.”

Puel: It’s important to show our qualities

Show/hide article…

Saints host Arsenal in their penultimate Premier League home fixture of the campaign, and the Frenchman is aware of the threat the Gunners will pose.

"We know Arsenal. It’s always a great team with fantastic offensive players,” he started.

“But I think we can do a good game against this team – to keep, of course, a good structure, to defend together and to prevent them chances.

“But also to have the ball and the possibility in the final third to find the clinical edge and to produce good football. It’s important also in front of our fans to show our qualities.”

Saints head into the clash off the back of a goalless stalemate at Liverpool - their second in as many fixtures.

And whilst Puel was pleased to come away from Anfield with a point, he felt it was necceasry following the draw against Hull City the week before.

"It was a good result for the confidence,” he continued.

“It was important after our game against Hull City to show something, with all this good work and with intensity.

“It was a strong game, with a strong defensive unit, and in the spirit it was very interesting, because all the players did fantastic work together.

“For the spirit and the solidarity it was a strong game. Now it’s another game, and another game at home, against another team and it will be important to have good possession, good possibilities to attack.”
