Puel: We won’t hesitate to start Austin

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel is happy the return to fitness of Charlie Austin will give Southampton greater possibilities in attack, and Saints’ manager says he will have no hesitation in throwing the striker straight back into the starting XI.

“It’s a good thing – I have a choice,” Puel said following the striker’s first appearance after a shoulder injury for the club’s Premier League 2 side last Friday.

"But it’s important to see every time the possibility to play in a good rhythm and intensity and if I decide he can bring something for the team I will not hesitate.”

Puel reported no fresh injury concerns for Wednesday’s home meeting with Arsenal as Southampton look to win three consecutive home Premier League matches against the Gunners for the first time.

Blackburn were champions in 1994/95, now they are third tier – see what has happened to the other 21 clubs since that season

Show/hide article…

Blackburn Rovers were relegated to League One on Sunday, becoming the first Premier League champions to fall into the third tier of the English football pyramid.

It’s been a sad demise for a once great club, who thrived under the ownership of Jack Walker in the 1990s.

The title win in 1995 was a campaign that will live long in the memory, as heroes including Alan Shearer, Chris Sutton, Colin Hendry, Tim Flowers and Tim Sherwood helped drive Kenny Dalglish’s Rovers to glory, pipping Manchester United to top spot.

But what has happened to the rest of the teams from this Premier League season? Click the right arrow above to find out…

Martin Tyler’s stats: Most own goals, fewest different scorers in a season

Martin Tyler’s stats: Most own goals, fewest different scorers in a season

Martin Tyler returns with the best stats and facts from the weekend’s Premier League action.

Who has scored the most own goals in a season? Is Fernando Llorente on course to set a record? Has any team ever had fewer different scorers in a season than Sunderland?

Read on for the answers and don’t forget to try to answer Martin’s tricky teaser…

I was at Stamford Bridge on Monday. Middlesbrough have not won in their last 19 league visits to Chelsea - drawing six and losing 13 - since March 1975, when they won 2-1 in the old First Division. They have not scored in their last eight visits (12 hours of Premier League football) and the last goal that Middlesbrough scored at Stamford Bridge was by Alen Boksic in September 2001. Chelsea led 2-0 in that game through two Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink goals (he was there on Monday), but Boro came back to draw 2-2.

Chelsea have won the last six meetings home and away without conceding, scoring 17 goals in the process. Boro’s last goals and win over Chelsea was August 2006 when Mark Viduka scored a last-minute winner in a 2-1 home win.

Cesc Fabregas became the first player to reach double figures in assists in six different seasons. In my commentary, we were told Opta hadn’t given him an assist for the first goal because it deflected off Fabio, so I didn’t say it until after the third goal. However, Opta have reviewed it - from my knowledge the first assist that has ever been reviewed - and have now awarded him two assists. I would give credit to Opta for showing common sense. Reviewing assists is as important as reviewing goals!

Fabregas also overtook Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney, who have had 10 assists in five different seasons. Cesc now has 106 career assists in the Premier League - and is second in the all-time list, but has a lot of goal-making to do to catch Giggs on 162.

It was Chelsea’s 300th Premier League home win. Their record at Stamford Bridge is P479 W300 D117 L62.

Bournemouth have scored five own goals this season. Is that a record? (Kyle)

MARTIN SAYS: There are a few teams who have scored five own goals in a Premier League season before, but only nine who have scored more.

Leicester hold the record, having netted eight own goals in the 2003/04 season when they were relegated.

Southampton were also relegated from the Premier League in 2004/05 after scoring seven own goals, with Danny Higginbotham and Andreas Jakobsson both turning into their own net twice.

The most recent teams to score six own goals in a season were Liverpool and Sunderland in 2013/14.

Martin Skrtel was responsible for three of Liverpool’s own goals that season while Phil Bardsley scored two for Sunderland.

The other teams to score six own goals in a season are Middlesbrough in 2008/09, Wimbledon in 1995/96, Manchester City in 1994/95, Southampton in 1999/00 and Fulham in 2005/06.

The goals accreditation panel are pretty hard on own goals these days, so I think we are likely to see more own goals going forward.

Billy Jones became Sunderland’s eighth different goalscorer in the Premier League this season when he scored against Hull on Saturday. What is the fewest number of different goalscorers, not including own goals, that a Premier League team has had in a season? (James)

MARTIN SAYS: Thanks to our friends at Opta, I can tell you Arsenal hold the record in 1993/94 when they had just six different scorers, and that was in a 42-game season.

Ian Wright was the Gunners’ top scorer in the league with 23 goals followed by Kevin Campbell on 14 and then Paul Merson with seven. Alan Smith scored three, Ray Parlour two and Steve Bould one.

Arsenal finished fourth that season but were comfortably the lowest scorers in the top four with just 53 goals (they benefited from three own goals).

Fulham and Burnley have both had only seven different goalscorers in a Premier League season.

Fulham managed the feat in 2001/02 as Steed Malbranque, Barry Hayles and Louis Saha all scored eight league goals. Steve Marlet (6), Sylvain Legwinski (1), Luis Boa Morte (1) and Bjarne Goldbaek (1) also netted.

Burnley’s scorers in 2014/15 were Danny Ings (14), George Boyd (5), Ashley Barnes (5), Scott Arfield (2), Ben Mee (2), Ross Wallace (1) and Michael Kightly (1).

There are several teams like Sunderland who have had eight different scorers in a season.

Tottenham did it in both 1994/95 and 1995/96 when Jurgen Klinsmann and Teddy Sheringham were their top scorers in the league respectively.

Coventry (1996/97), Wimbledon (1998/99), West Ham (2002/03) and Watford (2015/16) are the other teams to have seven.

Odion Ighalo (15) and Troy Deeney (13) scored the majority of Watford’s goals in 2015/16, with no other player managing more than two in the league.

Sunderland’s eight different scorers this season are Jermain Defoe (14), Victor Anichebe (3), Patrick van Aanholt (3), Fabio Borini (1), Didier N’Dong (1), Lamine Kone (1), Wahbi Khazri (1) and Jones (1).

Fernando Llorente has scored 13 goals for Swansea this season but hasn’t made one assist. Who has scored the most in a season without an assist? (Jack)

MARTIN SAYS: There are only three players who have scored more than Llorente in a Premier League season without providing an assist.

Benni McCarthy holds the record with 18 goals in 2006/07 for Blackburn without a single assist. The striker was the second-highest scorer in the league that season behind Didier Drogba (20).

Juan Pablo Angel scored 16 times in the league for Aston Villa in 2003/04 without any assists, with the Colombian’s goals helping Villa finish sixth in the table.

Demba Ba played for both Newcastle and Chelsea in 2012/13, but although he scored 15 goals for the two clubs he did not provide any assists.

And Matt Le Tissier also netted 13 for Southampton in 1996/97 without any assists which is surprising, given his creative abilities and set-piece abilities.

Portsmouth have now won all four divisions. Has any other club done this? (Martin)

MARTIN SAYS: Pompey are the fifth club to achieve the feat, and the second to complete the set this season after Sheffield United won League One.

Portsmouth are three-time winners of the Third Division and won the First Division in 1948/49 and 1949/50. They won the Second Division/Championship in 2002/03 before winning the Fourth Division/League Two this season.

Sheffield United have won each division once - Division One in 1897/98, Division Two in 1952/53, Division Three/League One in 2016/17 and Division Four in 1981/82.

They also won the Football League North in 1945/46 when the top two divisions were split up during the Second World War.

Burnley, Preston and Wolves are the other teams to have won all four divisions.

Burnley won Division One in 1920/21 and 1959/60, Division Two/Championship in 1897/98, 1972/73 and 2015/16, Division Three in 1981/82 and Division Four in 1991/92.

Preston are two-time champions in Division One (1888/89, 1889/90) and Division Three/League One (1970/71, 1999/00) and have won Division Two three times (1903/04, 1912/13, 1950/51). They completed the set when they won the Fourth Division in 1995/96.

Wolves have won Division One, Division Two and Division Three on three occasions and were crowned Division Four champions in 1987/88.

Craig Shakespeare has won his first five home games. What’s the best record for a manager at the start of his Premier League career? (Oli)

MARTIN SAYS: Shakespeare is in esteemed company as only three other managers have won their first five home games in the Premier League.

Manuel Pellegrini holds the record of 11 in a row with Manchester City. The run, which included a 7-0 win over Norwich, 6-0 win over Tottenham and a 6-3 victory against Arsenal, was ended when Chelsea won 1-0 at the Etihad on February 3, 2014.

Sven Goran Eriksson managed nine in a row with Man City before a 2-2 draw with Blackburn on December 27, 2007.

Carlo Ancelotti’s seven-match winning home run with Chelsea was ended by a 3-3 draw against Everton on December 12, 2009.

Opposition View: Arsène Wenger

Show/hide article…

Arsène Wenger has underlined the importance of Arsenal’s visit to St Mary’s if they are to qualify for the Champions League.

The 67-year-old insists his side have to pick up all three points tomorrow night, but admits he is well aware of the threat his fellow Frenchman Claude Puel’s side will pose.

“We have a big game on Wednesday,” started Wenger.

“Southampton are a good team. Collectively they play well. They keep possession of the ball and we need to recover and focus to win on Wednesday.

“We still have a chance mathematically and we need some help as well from teams around us.”

Arsenal head into the game off the back of a 2-0 victory over Manchester United, though they suffered defeat to Tottenham Hotspur the week before.

And Wenger was quick to stress just how important the victory over United was for his side.

“It was important to beat them because we lost at Tottenham - that didn’t happen many times,” he explained.

“We couldn’t afford to lose today. In fact, we have recently won at Middlesbrough, we beat Manchester City in the cup, we won against Leicester and today.

“We had just one blip and I think it was a bit physical. But overall, we look a bit more stable.”

Forster is back to his best, says Southampton boss Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel says goalkeeper Fraser Forster is over his early-season jitters and back to his best.

Forster’s form was under scrutiny earlier this term following some unconvincing displays, notably when his mistake helped Crystal Palace to a 3-0 win in December.

But the England international has looked more assured in keeping back-to-back clean sheets in 0-0 draws against Hull and, on Sunday, at Liverpool when he saved a penalty from James Milner.

Saints host Arsenal on Wednesday night with Puel, who managed Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris while he was at Lyon, backing Forster to maintain his fine recent form.

‘I can say about Fraser that, in the second half of the season, he’s playing with good consistency in his game,’ said the Frenchman. 'Like at Liverpool he had a good presence and put his personality on the game, not just with the penalty save.

'I am happy with Fraser, it’s important for the team and the player to give their best. He also plays behind a strong defensive unit. Fraser is important and for the team it’s important he has a good performance.

'I cannot compare him with other goalkeepers. Every other goalkeeper, like Lloris, has another profile.

‘But it’s important to have a good goalkeeper to get results and over the second half of the season I am satisfied with Fraser.’

Puel has also tipped Manolo Gabbiadini to rediscover his goal touch against the Gunners.

The January signing from Napoli scored six times in his first four Saints appearances but has not found the net since returning from a groin injury.

Saints did not manage a shot on target at Anfield, but Puel says Gabbiadini and his team-mates will go on the attack against Arsene Wenger’s side.

‘I think sometimes it’s difficult, when you come back from an injury, to find the good rhythm and good intensity - and of course we played a difficult game for a striker against Liverpool,’ added Puel.

'He played alone, between two or three defenders, so it’s difficult to have the ball.

'Like many strikers his quality is in the box, and we need to have the ball high up the pitch on the opponent to have the final shot and find the clinical edge.

'It’s important to play as high as possible, against Liverpool it was another tactic. We played against a good team, they wanted the three points for their position in the table.

‘It was difficult, but against Arsenal it will be another game. I think this game will be open and perhaps we will see more opportunities for them and for us.’

Arsenal training photos: Key man takes part in session despite fitness worry

Show/hide article…

LAURENT KOSCIELNY took part in Arsenal’s training session this morning ahead of their match against Southampton tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is concerned that the France international may not be fully fit for the game against the Saints after playing the full match against Manchester United.

But Koscielny trained as usual with the rest of his Arsenal team-mates and will have been assessed by staff throughout.

The Gunners squad seemed to be in high spirits today after beating the Red Devils on Sunday at the Emirates.

But they’ll need to be at their very best for the rest of the season if they are to have any chance of making it into the top four.

Great news! Virgil van Dijk is back running without assistance

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk gave Southampton fans reason to smile on Monday evening when he posted an injury update to his Instagram.

The Dutch centre-back is back up and running without assistance.

Van Dijk suffered an ankle injury in Southampton’s win over Leicester in January, and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

While the 25-year-old may still be missing for the Premier League’s run-in, the video comes as great news for Saints fans.

And possibly even more so for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are very keen on van Dijk, and are even willing to smash the transfer record to sign him.

However, Claude Puel recently stated he has no intention of letting the defender go.

The Saints boss named van Dijk Southampton team captain in January following Jose Fonte’s departure to West Ham.

Arsenal in high spirits on back of Man United success as they prepare for Saints

Show/hide article…

Arsenal enjoyed being on a rare high in a season of disappointments as they went through final preparations for Southampton on the back of beating Manchester United.

The Gunners’ 2-0 win gave a boost to fans staring down the barrel of a season without the Champions League, currently in sixth and six points adrift of Manchester City in fourth.

Sunday’s goal scorers Danny Welbeck and Granit Xhaka both showed an upbeat front for the Gunners amid a hectic fixture schedule.

Arsenal are playing four Premier League games in the space of just nine days, with Claude Puel’s Saints awaiting on Wednesday.

Stoke follow on Saturday and Sunderland next Tuesday, before they host Everton on the final day of the season on Sunday, May 21.

Arsenal remember tomorrow’s corresponding fixture last season well, a 4-0 defeat that they’ll be intent on not repeating.

In a boost for Wenger, Xhaka, who limped away from the win over United, is expected to be fit for the trip to St Mary’s.

Lucas Perez, who has been frustrated by a lack of game time this season and spoken out about his willingness to leave, has also recovered from a thigh problem.

Laurent Koscielny remains a question mark for Wenger but the manager also expects his fellow Frenchman to recover from a calf problem in time for Wednesday’s match.

Speaking on Tuesday, Wenger again refused to be drawn on his own future, offering up a simple “no” when asked if he would reveal his plans beyond this season.

Pockets of fans are protesting that he step aside after a second half of the season that’s seen his side slip from potential title winners to outsiders to finish in the top four.

Wenger does, however, have a chance to give them a reason to celebrate with a third FA Cup final in four seasons against Chelsea.

The success over Man United was Wenger’s first league win over Jose Mourinho at the 13th attempt and kept his hopes of Champions League qualification alive.

“We built our success with intelligence and patience and organisation,” Wenger said on Tuesday.

“We took advantage of the chances we created at the right moments in the game. It gives us still a chance to go into the top four.”

Arsenal train ahead of visit to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Arsene Wenger claimed Granit Xhaka has ‘recovered well’ after being forced off with an ankle injury against Manchester United but those present at Arsenal training on Tuesday might not have guessed it.

The midfielder was seen kicking back on a golf cart as his team-mates were put through their paces at London Colney ahead of the visit to Southampton on Wednesday.

Fortunately the midfielder, who opened the scoring during Sunday’s 2-0 victory, was quick to join his fellow Gunners stars and take full part in the session.

The three points at the Emirates mean Xhaka and Co still have a slim chance of making the top four after what has been a difficult season.

The north London outfit sit six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with one game in hand and four left to play.

And Xhaka still has hope of climbing above both City and Manchester United ahead of the game at St Mary’s, which has become somewhat of a bogey ground for Wenger’s men.

‘It’s a season that has had ups and downs,’ said Xhaka. 'But that’s normal in your first season. I think that belongs in football.

‘This is a phase where we have to win every game, which we know,’ said Xhaka. 'We have four games left that we need to approach in the same way as today.

'If we do that, I’m convinced that we can achieve what we want now. This is a top club, a great club. We are having a season where things have been a bit more difficult but I’m convinced that in the coming years we can show another side.

‘We always have hope. Hope dies last. It’s up to us, we need some luck along the way, but if we win the next four games, I’m convinced that we can do it.’

Puel on Saints’ final run-in

Show/hide article…

Saints face the challenge of playing four fixtures during the closing eleven days of the season, though Puel is keen to view the busy schedule in a positive light.

"It’s a good thing to play, because the players always prefer to play than to take part in training sessions,” he explained.

“But it’s important to see the good recovery of the players, because after this we also play against Middlesbrough away and then the next Wednesday against United and on the last day against Stoke.

“It’s a difficult schedule, but I think interesting at the end of the season. We have had a lot of games, and that’s a good thing for the squad.”

Arsenal are the most immediate challenge for Puel’s men, as they visit St Mary’s tomorrow night.

Saints could move up to 8th in the table with a win over the Gunners, though Puel is more focussed on seeing a good display from his side.

"We will see about this,” he continued.

“Before thinking about the three points it’s important to think about our play and what we have to do on the pitch. That is the most important thing. It’s important to find the good play and the good relationship in our play.

“We will see also how we recover after this game against Liverpool, because it was a difficult game, with a lot of running and a lot of energy, and we will see how we recover.”
