Southampton FC news: Claude Puel insists Virgil van Dijk WILL be at St Mary’s next season

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists sought-after defender Virgil van Dijk will still be a Southampton player next season.

Netherlands centre-half Van Dijk has been linked with a big-money move this summer, with clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool reportedly keen on the 25-year-old.

Van Dijk’s season ended in January when he picked up an ankle injury, but Puel is adamant his defensive linchpin has not played his last game in a Saints shirt.

“It was a bad injury for him and for us,” said Puel.

"Then after Jose Fonte left (for West Ham) it was difficult for us. It’s been a good thing to see Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida play together in their place. But for Virgil it was a bad injury.

"Now the surgery is finished he can work normally and be ready for next season - with us.

"He’s our captain and I have said he is important for us. He has authority, the leadership of the team, he is a fantastic player.

"It’s important for us, of course, to wait until the beginning of the season to see him on the pitch with Southampton.

“He has a long contract and the directors want to keep him.”

Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk will still be at Southampton next season, says manager Claude Puel

Show/hide article…

Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk will still be at Southampton next season, according to his manager Claude Puel.

The Dutch centre-half has reportedly caught the attention of a number of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool all rumoured to be interested.

The 25-year-old, who signed from Celtic for £13m in 2015, has been sidelined since an ankle injury ended his season in January and Puel is adamant his defensive linchpin has not played his last game in a Saints shirt.

Puel could welcome back another key player who has also been out with a long-term injury when Saints host Arsenal on Wednesday.

Striker Charlie Austin, still the club’s top scorer this season with nine goals, has been absent since December with a shoulder injury.

After playing for Southampton’s U23s on Friday night, the forward could now be in contention to feature against the Gunners.

“It was important to see a game with Charlie,” added Puel. "Charlie and Matt Targett played for one hour, they have worked hard in training sessions and we will see if they can participate this season.

"With Charlie, four or five months without a game means the intensity is very difficult. I am happy with his work and we will see if he can play in the next games.

“He has worked very well. We need to see if he can continue this work and get physically fit it will be interesting for him.”

Chelsea, Liverpool FC and Man City in Virgil van Dijk blow

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel insists sought-after defender Virgil van Dijk will still be at the club next season.

Dutch centre-half Van Dijk has been linked with a big-money move this summer, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool among the clubs rumoured to be interested.

The 25-year-old, signed from Celtic for £13million in 2015, has been sidelined since an ankle injury ended his season in January, but has now returned to training.

And Puel is adamant his defensive linchpin has not played his last game in a Saints shirt.

‘It was a bad injury for him and for us,’ said Puel, on the same day that Van Dijk shared a video to Instagram showing him back running on the pitch.

'Then after Jose Fonte left (for West Ham) it was difficult for us. It’s been a good thing to see Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida play together in their place. But for Virgil it was a bad injury.

'Now the surgery is finished he can work normally and be ready for next season - with us.

Virgil van Dijk: Southampton directors ‘want to keep’ captain

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel says the club do not want to sell captain Virgil van Dijk.

The 25-year-old, who suffered an ankle injury in January which ruled him out for the remainder of the season, has been linked with a move away from St Mary’s.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have all been reported to be interested in the Dutch international.

“He has a long contract and the directors want to keep him,” Puel said.

"He has authority, the leadership of the team, he is a fantastic player.

“It’s important for us, of course, to wait until the beginning of the season to see him on the pitch with Southampton.”

Van Dijk joined the Saints from Celtic for £13m in 2013 and has made 55 appearances, scoring four times.

Puel stands firm over Van Dijk future

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel is adamant Virgil van Dijk’s future is at Saints in the midst of continued speculation over a potential exit this summer.

The Dutchman is out injured for the season with a foot ligament problem he picked up in January in Saints’ 3-0 win over Leicester at St Mary’s.

Despite his absence from action, it has not stopped rumours the top class central defender will be subject to big-money bids from almost every leading side in the Premier League in the transfer window.

A fee of around £50m has been talked about for the 25-year-old, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City all high up on the list of potential suitors.

But St Mary’s chief Puel says his captain is not going anywhere this summer.

“It was a bad injury for him and it was a bad moment for us with Jose Fonte leaving for West Ham just at the same time as Virgil got injured,” he said. "It was difficult for us.

"It’s been a good thing to see the second part of the season with Yoshida and Stephens at centre-back.

"We spoke about the possibility of playing with Stephens and Yoshida together. People told me I’m crazy, but it’s good to see these two players playing at this level.

“Virgil had a bad injury, but now it’s okay, his surgery is finished and he can work normally and go into the gym for rehabilitation and come back next season with us … with us!”

Van Dijk was signed from Celtic in the summer of 2015 for £13m and has become a colossus for Saints at the back.

The Netherlands international was handed the captain’s armband in January following Jose Fonte’s exit and he’s considered a massive part of the club.

“He’s our captain and he’s important for us,” Puel added. "He’s matured and taken leadership on the team; he’s a fantastic player we know well.

"He’s important for us and now, of course, we will wait to the beginning of the season to see him on the pitch with Southampton.

“He has a long contract and the directors will want to keep him.”

Southampton stand firm over Chelsea, Liverpool, City target Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Chelsea target Virgil van Dijk will still be at Southampton next season, insists Saints boss Claude Puel.

Standard Sport reported in March that Chelsea have been keen on the Netherlands international for much of the season, though Liverpool and City had emerged as rivals in what would likely be a £50million transfer battle.

The 25-year-old, signed from Celtic for £13m in 2015, has been sidelined since an ankle injury ended his season in January, and Puel is adamant his defensive linchpin has not played his last game in a Saints shirt.

“It was a bad injury for him and for us,” said Puel.

Past Liverpool squads would not have left James Milner alone

Show/hide article…

Talk about teams going flat late in the season. Liverpool were held to a 0-0 draw at Anfield by a Southampton side that (on paper at least) had little to play for but pride. Along the way, James Milner had a penalty saved by Fraser Forster, his first miss since 2009.

At the risk of making too much of this, one thing stood out for me. The penalty itself took ages to be taken as various Southampton players argued with the match official. Milner stood there, iced, on the penalty spot. Forster, who is nearly a foot taller than Milner, wandered over, loomed above his opponent, exchanged words and generally tried to rattle him.

I don’t have a problem with Forster’s gamesmanship: It’s what players are told to do and they’ll push it as far as they can, risking a booking in the process. What struck me as odd though was how alone Milner was out there. Not a single Liverpool player came over to back him up or usher Forster away. I’m not going to suggest it made a difference to Milner’s penalty, which Forster did well to save, but I can’t imagine it happening back in the day when the likes of Jamie Carragher, Steve McMahon or Graeme Souness played for the club.
