James Ward-Prowse hands Saints much-needed boost with win over Fulham

Show/hide article…

It was a victory for pragmatism over aesthetics at Craven Cottage as Southampton snuck past Fulham 1-0 and into the fourth round of the FA Cup. But it was far from convincing for Saints or their under-pressure manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who was jeered by his own fans even in victory.

This was always destined to be one of the more evenly poised third-round ties and it lived up to such a billing. The hosts were a team in the Championship play-off hunt and the visitors a struggling Premier League outfit yet to really find their feet under Pellegrino.

Fulham have spent the last 18 months becoming a well-coached, naturally proactive team that like to stroke it about. They play passing, attractive football but they do sometimes have the feeling of being, well, a little too nice. There are moments when you just wish one of them would take the game by the scruff of the neck and force the issue but it isn’t in their nature. They are sculptors rather than soldiers – and on Saturday they got a lesson in the ruthlessness of the Premier League.

The Cottagers were the more impressive team throughout, having more of the ball and generally playing the game in a more attractive fashion. Unfortunately, the scoreboard doesn’t take that into account, and Saints were more efficient in the few chances they had and probably could have won by more in the end.

Sofiane Boufal, the south coast club’s record signing, is yet to shine consistently but he flashes brilliance and he could have had a goal or two today. Instead it was James Ward-Prowse whose close-range prod separated these sides, arriving from midfield to capitalise on some sloppiness in the Fulham defence just before half-time.

There was always hope that the hosts could come back into it, with Stefan Johansen and Lucas Piazon the chief creators in Tom Cairney’s absence, but Rui Fonte was a slender, unconvincing spearhead to the attack and you can see why coach Slavisa Jokanovic is so keen to sign a centre-forward. Whether the unwieldy task force above him that governs recruitment allow him to dip into the market is another question entirely.

Jokanovic deserves credit for how well he has Fulham playing but once they were behind, it suited Mauricio Pellegrino’s men down to the ground. The Argentine has built his reputation on solid teams that don’t concede and in Boufal and Shane Long he had speedy counter-attacking weapons that periodically stretched and dashed Fulham’s high line.

Pellegrino was jeered by Saints fans for taking off the impressive Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on 80 minutes and Jokanovic took criticism from the stands for leaving out Cairney, the man who is usually the beating heart of this team.

But Southampton held on for victory and Fulham fall at the first hurdle.

FA Cup third-round review: Manchester City thrash Burnley, Stoke shocked by Coventry City

Show/hide article…

Sergio Aguero struck twice in two minutes as Manchester City came from behind to overpower Burnley 4-1 in the FA Cup third round.

Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva also got on the scoresheet as City responded impressively to the shock of conceding a half-time lead to Ashley Barnes’ superb opener at the Etihad Stadium.

The comeback, which will only increase talk of a City quadruple bid, was inspired by Ilkay Gundogan, the German setting up Aguero for both his game-changing goals in the 56th and 58th minutes.

Peterborough pulled off a stunning FA Cup upset as three goals in the final 15 minutes earned them a 3-1 win against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Villa had looked set to cruise to victory when Keinan Davis gave then the lead after only eight minutes.

But League One Peterborough produced a storming fightback against the Championship side and leading scorer Jack Marriott drew them level in the 75th minute.

The towering Ryan Tafazolli then gave them the lead with a header seven minutes from time before Marriott struck for the 23rd time this season in stoppage time with his fifth FA Cup goal of the season.

Sam Gallagher scored the only goal as Birmingham continued their recent revival with a 1-0 victory over Burton in the FA Cup.

Gallagher’s 57th-minute strike earned Blues a place in the fourth round and a third successive victory without conceding a goal, having also toppled Leeds and Reading to move off the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship.

Burton were in good form themselves, picking up three wins and a draw in their previous five games, and they can feel aggrieved not to have got anything from their trip to St Andrew’s.

Ola Aina’s first senior goal gave Championship strugglers Hull a 1-0 win at League One Blackburn in the FA Cup.

The on-loan Chelsea defender rose highest in the 58th minute to head home the goal which ended a five-match winless run.

Paul Caddis hit the crossbar for the hosts and Danny Graham missed a gilt-edged chance as Rovers exited at the third-round stage for the first time since 2014.

Rajiv van La Parra and Danny Williams struck second-half goals barely a minute apart as Huddersfield booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win at Bolton.

Substitute Van La Parra stabbed home the opening goal soon after the interval and Williams crashed a deflected 30-yard shot beyond home goalkeeper Mark Howard as a turgid cup tie ignited after a dismal first 45 minutes.

Bolton pulled one back with 26 minutes remaining through a header from Derik Osede, who went close to firing an equaliser soon after in front of a disappointing crowd of 11,574.

Steve Cook headed an injury-time equaliser as Bournemouth battled back from two goals down to scrape an FA Cup third-round replay with League One leaders Wigan.

The Cherries looked to be heading out of the competition to lower-league opposition for the second successive season before Cook spared their blushes by making it 2-2 at the death.

Lys Mousset’s first Bournemouth goal had given Eddie Howe’s men hope after Paul Cook’s in-form Latics built a two-goal first-half lead thanks to Will Grigg and an own goal from Emerson Hyndman.

Veteran striker Jon Stead’s second half goal sent League Two Notts County into the fourth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Championship Brentford.

The big striker pounced on a slip by left back Ilias Chatzitheodoridis to run on unchallenged and fire an unstoppable drive into the far corner after 65 minutes.

New Brentford signing Emiliano Marcondes almost levelled with an injury time header from Josh McEachran’s corner but the Bees’ luck was out, and it bounced back off the upright.

Mansfield earned an FA Cup third-round replay against Cardiff by forcing a goalless draw in the Welsh capital.

Stags goalkeeper Conrad Logan kept the scores level at half-time before a host of second-half chances went begging for both sides.

Alex MacDonald and Paul Anderson had chances to seal a famous victory at a near-empty Cardiff City Stadium, but Steve Evans’ side will at least be in the hat for the fourth-round draw.

A resilient Carlisle performance earned them an FA Cup third round replay with a 0-0 draw against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday failed to make the most of their chances and were unable to provide interim boss Lee Bullen with a win in his last game in charge before new manager Jos Luhukay takes over on Monday.

Jack Grimmer’s winner left Stoke boss Mark Hughes on the brink after Coventry dumped the Potters out of the FA Cup.

Defender Grimmer struck in the second half to push Hughes closer to the exit following the Sky Blues’ 2-1 third-round win.

Charlie Adam had cancelled out Jordan Willis’ opener but Sky Bet League Two outfit Coventry outfought and outfoxed Stoke at the Ricoh Arena.

Calvin Andrew’s first-half goal was enough to send Rochdale into the FA Cup fourth round after a 1-0 win at Doncaster.

Andrew headed home in the 18th minute as Dale gained revenge on Rovers for a 2-0 League One defeat at the Keepmoat Stadium only last Friday.

It was Andrew’s fourth goal of the season as the striker glanced home Joseph Bunney’s wicked free-kick from the left.

Alan Pardew claimed his first win as West Brom manager with a 2-0 FA Cup victory at Exeter.

First-half goals from Salomon Rondon and Jay Rodriguez secured Albion’s safe passage to the fourth round and gave Pardew a first win in nine games since succeeding Tony Pulis at the end of November.

Albion could even afford the luxury of a Hal Robson-Kanu penalty miss just before half-time, the Welshman sending his tame attempt too close to Exeter goalkeeper Christy Pym.

West Brom had gone 21 games without a win since beating Accrington in the Carabao Cup in August.

Southampton eased the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino with a deserved 1-0 victory at Fulham in the third round of the FA Cup.

The club slipped to 17th in the Premier League on Tuesday after losing 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace in what was their ninth fixture without victory.

Championship Fulham had also won their previous four games at Craven Cottage, increasing the potential threat involved for an out-of-form side, but they instead progressed to the competition’s next stage with a James Ward-Prowse goal.

Thomas’ superb long-range effort in the 25th minute which flew into the top corner extended Ipswich’s miserable recent record in the competition.

The hosts have not won an FA Cup match since January 2010 and did not like ending that run on Saturday, failing to record a shot on goal in the 90 minutes.

Aiden O’Brien fired Millwall into the fourth round of the FA Cup as his brace inspired Neil Harris’ side to a 4-1 win over 10-man Barnsley.

After the visitors had gone ahead early on, the game turned during a 20-minute spell either side of half time, as O’Brien scored two goals and created another while Joe Williams saw red to remove any hope of a comeback.

Fred Onyedinma added a fourth to make sure as Millwill ended a run of five straight defeats against Barnsley in emphatic fashion.

Ayoze Perez set Premier League Newcastle on their way into the FA Cup fourth round as they launched a first-half blitz to see off battling Luton 3-1.

Perez struck twice from close range before Jonjo Shelvey helped himself to a third inside nine minutes to send the Magpies in at the break in compete control.

The League Two leaders launched a concerted second-half fightback after Danny Hylton had replied four minutes into the second half and then seen a second ruled out for offside, before substitute Elliot Lee rattled the crossbar with a curling free-kick.

But despite the impressive onslaught, Rafael Benitez’s men saw the game through to complete a more than satisfactory festive programme.

Ousseynou Cisse scored the winning goal as League One’s MK Dons knocked Sky Bet Championship side QPR out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory at Loftus Road.

Cisse scored on the hour mark courtesy of a farcical mistake by Rs midfielder Josh Scowen.

Scowen chased a misplaced pass from team-mate Grant Hall and by nudging the ball away from the right-hand touchline in order to keep it in play, he inadvertently sent Cisse through on goal.

Cisse took full advantage, shooting beyond keeper Alex Smithies and into the far corner of the net - the Mali international’s first goal in English football.

Out of form Sky Bet Championship side Reading are now seven games without a win after they were held to a 0-0 draw by League Two’s Stevenage in the FA Cup third round.

Troy Deeney’s diving header snuffed out any threat of an upset as Watford eased past giant-killers Bristol City 3-0 and into the FA Cup fourth round.

Captain Deeney toasted his return from a four-match ban with his third goal of the campaign, adding to Andre Carrillo’s drilled strike and Etienne Capoue’s neat finish.

Bristol were unable to repeat the heroics that saw them dispatch Manchester United 2-1 on December 20 to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals, amid a clinical Hornets performance.

Wolves were unable to claim another Premier League scalp in the FA Cup as their third round tie against Swansea at Molineux finished goalless and 10 aside.

Wanderers have an impressive record against top-flight opposition in the past 12 months, having won at Stoke and Liverpool in the FA Cup last season. Nuno Espirito Santo’s runaway Championship leaders have also beaten Southampton this campaign in the Carabao Cup and took Manchester City all the way to penalties in the same competition.

Hopes were high in the Black Country that they could add Swansea to that list of victims and Wolves did have the better chances to score, until their momentum was interrupted by Ruben Vinagre’s red card five minutes before half time.

Swansea came into the game a bit more thereafter but they were also reduced in number after 67 minutes when Leroy Fer was sent off.

Neither team could make a breakthrough and they will replay at the Liberty Stadium later this month.

Josh Harrop and Alan Browne both scored twice as Preston crushed Wycombe 5-1 at Adams Park in an FA Cup third round tie they controlled almost from start to finish.

Southampton loanee Marcus Barnes had a debut to remember for Yeovil as he scored in a 2-0 FA Cup third-round victory upset against Bradford.

The Glovers were the stronger side in the first half and Bradford had to put bodies on the line as Matt Kilgallon chested a fiercely-struck Tom James half-volley away inside the six-yard box.

The visitors improved after the break but it was Yeovil who made the breakthrough on 61 minutes. Otis Khan played in Barnes one-on-one on the counter and the man who only joined on Friday coolly slotted in.

Yeovil 2-0 Bradford: Marcus Barnes scores on debut to send Yeovil into FA Cup fourth round

Show/hide article…

Southampton loanee Marcus Barnes had a debut to remember for League Two’s Yeovil as he scored in a 2-0 FA Cup third-round victory upset against Bradford.

The Glovers were the stronger side in the first half and Bradford had to put bodies on the line as Matt Kilgallon chested a fiercely-struck Tom James half-volley away inside the six-yard box.

Their League One visitors improved after the break but it was Yeovil who made the breakthrough on 61 minutes - Otis Khan playing in Barnes one-on-one on the counter and the man who only joined on Friday coolly slotted in.

Paul Taylor was inches away from an equaliser when his dipping shot from distance hit the underside of the bar before goalkeeper Artur Krysiak recovered brilliantly to save Shay McCartan’s follow up.

And that proved a pivotal moment as a few minutes later it was 2-0 to the hosts when Francois Zoko broke forward with purpose and set up Jordan Green (76) to sidefoot in a second, before James denied the Bantams a consolation by heading a Daniel Devine shot off the line late on.

Yeovil manager Darren Way hailed his side’s “extraordinary achievement” following the win, saying: "An incredible amount of effort and energy has gone into fielding a team, let alone winning a football match.

"The players must take great credit for sticking together through tough times and having faith that we could come through today.

"On Wednesday I only had 10 players available but four signings later we were able to get a motivated team together to knock out a team from a higher division.

"The players had to believe they could do it and they took the opportunity to create a little bit of history for a club which has a great record in this competition.

“This result will be remembered for a long time at this club and now we wait to see who we get in the next round.”

Stuart McCall praised Bradford’s opponents for their performance, adding: "We got everything we deserved today. Yeovil were terrific and full credit to them. They were young, hungry and wanted it more than us. On the day they deserved to go through.

"We didn’t come out of the traps and our first-half performance was as poor as we’ve been. They won every battle.

“Second half we were better but got done by two counter-attack goals but they thoroughly deserve to be in the next round.”

Fulham 0-1 Southampton: James Ward-Prowse strike eases pressure on Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton eased the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino with a deserved 1-0 victory at Fulham in the third round of the FA Cup.

The club slipped to 17th in the Premier League on Tuesday after losing 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace in what was their ninth fixture without victory.

Championship Fulham had also won their previous four games at Craven Cottage, increasing the potential threat involved for an out-of-form side, but they instead progressed to the competition’s next stage with a James Ward-Prowse goal.

Ward-Prowse had just bent wide of the left post after being fed by the creative Sofiane Boufal when, with his second chance of the 29th minute, he convincingly finished.

Steven Davis controlled Maya Yoshida’s ball out of defence and - via Boufal, Long and a deflection off Kevin McDonald - the ball ended up at the feet of Ward-Prowse in front of goal, who poked under Button.

Southampton and Boufal, recruited by Pellegrino’s predecessor Claude Puel, again threatened when the Moroccan ran from near the corner flag to inside the area and shot low at goal before watching the diving Button tip wide.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was influential during their most recent victory, against Everton in November, and he deserved to double their lead when winning possession, exchanging passes with Long and forcing a save from Button.

Fulham should have scored on the hour. Fine play from Ryan Sessegnon created room to cross, but a reluctance to shoot meant Stefan Johansen and Oliver Norwood instead exchanged passes before Johansen finally shot without conviction and Alex McCarthy saved.

The Saints nearly extended their lead as from a right-wing corner, Ward-Prowse crossed to Long, whose knock-on was headed by Jack Stephens onto the underside of the crossbar.

Fulham then wasted their best chance when, after Norwood crossed into the area from a free-kick and McCarthy spilled the ball and was left on the floor, Denis Odoi connected well with the loose ball but struck it over the crossbar.

Birmingham 1-0 Burton Albion: Sam Gallagher goal earns FA Cup third-round victory

Show/hide article…

Sam Gallagher scored the only goal as Birmingham continued their recent revival with a 1-0 victory over Burton in the FA Cup.

Gallagher’s 57th-minute strike earned Blues a place in the fourth round and a third successive victory without conceding a goal, having also toppled Leeds and Reading to move off the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship.

Burton were in good form themselves, picking up three wins and a draw in their previous five games, and they can feel aggrieved not to have got anything from their trip to St Andrew’s.

Both teams struggled to get into top gear, although the pace of Lloyd Dyer was always a potential threat for Burton.

Their best chance of taking command came from a Will Miller free-kick, which forced David Stockdale to flick the ball over the bar for a corner.

Although they had the majority of the attacking play Birmingham started to become a little frustrated, and some poor clearances from Stockdale also caused them some worries at the back.

On one occasion Burton gained possession and Stockdale had to make amends by grabbing a Dyer cross as Lucas Akins closed in.

The much-travelled Dyer - who counts Birmingham among his former clubs - then created a shooting chance for himself, only for Harlee Dean to make a last-minute intervention.

Dyer continued to cause his old side problems and his cross found John Brayford, whose effort hit the side-netting.

Birmingham midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld might have considered himself fortunate only to have received a yellow card for his challenge on Tom Flanagan in the 37th minute, before the home side had another let-off at the start of the second half.

Ben Turner’s header looked set to give Burton the lead just moments after the restart, but Craig Gardner’s goalline clearance kept the score level.

The Brewers were looking a threat going forward, but it was Birmingham who broke the stalemate somewhat against the run of play.

Gallagher played in Jacques Maghoma down the right and the former Burton winger, who has been Birmingham’s inspiration in recent games, cut in and pulled the ball back into the path of the on-loan Southampton striker to ram home a shot into the roof of the net.

The 22-year-old’s goal certainly livened up Birmingham with the pace of Maghoma suddenly having an impact as Burton were forced to abandon a defensive plan in their search for an equaliser, although ultimately without success.

Steve Cotterill (Birmingham): “I had a long chat with Nigel Clough before the game. We both put out unchanged teams as we wanted to maintain our recent momentum and fortunately for us we were able to win. What pleased me with our third successive win is that it was also our third successive clean sheet. If you have a clean sheet it means you don’t lose and this is something we’ve been working on as it is a big confidence boost for the team.”

Nigel Clough (Burton): “Losing to Birmingham was only our second defeat in six games and we shouldn’t have lost either game. We are comfortable with our pattern of play and the team is picking itself. We looked solid and dangerous. Unfortunately Birmingham scored with their only shot on target. We are disappointed to be out of the cup because we should have got through.”

Southampton confirm when they want to sign Arsenal ace Walcott

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed Southampton hope to sign Arsenal’s Theo Walcott this month after watching his team progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat of Fulham.

James Ward-Prowse’s first-half finish at Craven Cottage ensured they ended a run of nine games without victory and eased the pressure building on their manager.

The club’s supporters on Tuesday chanted for his dismissal when they fell to 17th in the Premier League by losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace.

At Fulham when he replaced Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina as they sought to preserve their narrow lead they sang, “You don’t know what you’re doing”, but Pellegrino insists victory has given them a platform to build upon.

Following the £75million sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, Southampton plan to strengthen their attacking options.

They remain uncertain about their hopes of re-signing Walcott, who left in 2006, but the manager said: "I have been talking about him.

"He is a good player, but I don’t know with the negotiations, with the market, I imagine that this type of player would have a lot of possibility. For us it’s not easy.

“Hopefully we can bring somebody that can help us be stronger. This is our target now. We know the market is difficult, but we are working on that.”

Asked about the response from the visiting supporters to his 80th-minute decision to replace Hojbjerg, he said: "When I make a change I think it is best for the team. When the opponent is dominating, you need fresh players.

"I am not upset. I think the fans are with us and the team and were great from beginning until the end and I cannot complain about anything.

"I understand when the fans have their opinions, but when I am doing something I am thinking about my team and my players and not the fans.

“It is an important result for us and we have taken a step forward in this competition, and can hopefully use this game as a base to improve every single week.”

Southampton want Arsenal’s Theo Walcott - Mauricio Pellegrino

Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed Southampton hope to sign Arsenal’s Theo Walcott this month after watching his team progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 defeat of Fulham.

“It is an important result for us and we have taken a step forward in this competition, and can hopefully use this game as a base to improve every single week.”

The result ended Fulham’s run of four successive home victories, and could have been by a wider margin after Jack Stephens headed against the crossbar, regardless of Denis Odoi’s late miss.

“It was 50-50 at the end,” Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic said. "They showed in one situation some Premier League quality, they scored the goal, they won the game. My team tried to dominate the game with the ball. They get to the next round.

"You always need to score to win the game. We played against a Premier League team, we must be clinical in some moments. We didn’t make more of what we made, but in one moment they showed the quality and won the game.

“We are where we are. In this moment for us this competition is over, and we look at the next step.”

Bednarek embraces first-team chance

Show/hide article…

Drafted in at right-back after injuries to Cédric and Jérémy Pied, the defender produced a morale-boosting showing as Saints advanced at the expense of Fulham.

At the forefront of the 21-year-old’s mind at full-time however was the result, a welcome victory following defeat to Crystal Palace earlier in the week at St Mary’s.

"The most important part was just to reach the next round and give 100%. We haven’t won for a while and played poorly last time out so it was important to be one team and play together. The fans helped us very well.

“We have to go step by step and stick together to reach our goals. The result was the most important thing here, more so than how we did it. We struggled in some moments of the game but we deserved to win.”

Today’s full 90 minutes was his first appearance since August and the youngster was keen to embrace his first-team opportunity.

“I was calm because I have been working hard for this opportunity,” he concluded. “I was patient and showed to the coach that I was ready. I did my job, kept a clean sheet so I’m happy.”
