Pellegrino: Let’s build on cup win

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse’s first-half goal secured the club’s first win in ten games, and a place in the fourth round of the competition as a result.

The boss was particularly pleased with the spirit of his players, as the hosts pushed for a late equaliser at Craven Cottage.

“It was important because we needed a performance like this to show to the others that we are really strong as a team,” Pellegrino said.

“I think we defended well and we showed spirit from the beginning until the end of the game.

“It was a difficult game, because Fulham are a good team who play good football and manage the ball well.

“But I think we looked dangerous on the counter-attack and could’ve scored the second goal.

“We have to use this as a base to improve and learn that we are capable of being solid. This performance can help us to be better next week.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino confirms Theo Walcott interest

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed Southampton are interested in re-signing Arsenal’s Theo Walcott this month.

Southampton progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Fulham as James Ward-Prowse’s first-half finish ensured they ended a run of nine games without victory and eased the pressure building on their manager.

Following the £75million sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, Southampton plan to strengthen their attacking options.

They remain uncertain about their hopes of re-signing Walcott, who left in 2006, but the manager said: "I have been talking about him.

"He is a good player, but I don’t know with the negotiations, with the market, I imagine that this type of player would have a lot of possibility. For us it’s not easy.

“Hopefully we can bring somebody that can help us be stronger. This is our target now. We know the market is difficult, but we are working on that.”

Some of the club’s supporters chanted for Pellegrino’s dismissal, on Tuesday, when they fell to 17th in the Premier League by losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace.

At Fulham when he replaced Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina as they sought to preserve their narrow lead they sang, “You don’t know what you’re doing”, but Pellegrino insists victory has given them a platform to build upon.

Asked about the response from the visiting supporters to his 80th-minute decision to replace Hojbjerg, he said: "When I make a change I think it is best for the team. When the opponent is dominating, you need fresh players.

"I am not upset. I think the fans are with us and the team and were great from beginning until the end and I cannot complain about anything.

"I understand when the fans have their opinions, but when I am doing something I am thinking about my team and my players and not the fans.

“It is an important result for us and we have taken a step forward in this competition, and can hopefully use this game as a base to improve every single week.”

Pellegrino targets Saints springboard

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino hopes that Saints’ 1-0 FA Cup third round win over Fulham can prove a springboard to Premier League success.

Saints ended a run of nine games with a victory as they defeated their Championship opponents at Craven Cottage thanks to a first half goal from James Ward-Prowse.

Pellegrino and his men were in desperate need of a win after a demoralising defeat to Crystal Palace in midweek, and they got it as the Saints boss fielded a strong team which saw them into Monday night’s fourth round draw.

The next target is Watford next Saturday, with Saints aiming to build the momentum to help them away from the bottom three.

Pellegrino said: “It’s an important result for us because we move one step forward in this competition but also can hopefully help us to use this game as a base to improve every single week.

“The team on the pitch were really solid, managing the ball a little bit less than usual but Fulham is a good team technically.

“We looked a threat on the counter attack and could have scored the second goal maybe earlier.

“A good game and we compete well from the beginning until the end.”

There has been an argument that in the battle for Premier League survival Saints could do without the distraction of the FA Cup, but Pellegrino disagrees.

“For me it’s important because I use this game to move the first round but also to use as preparation to improve in the next step,” he reflected.

“After we will see what we need in the future.

“Obviously the Premier League is the competition number one because we survive with the Premier League.

“I love this competition (FA Cup), always when I was abroad this competition is classical for everyone, traditional, I want to move forward and try to arrive at the end.”

With the comparative luxury of a week between fixtures, Saints now turn their attentions back to the transfer market and trying to progress a deal for a new signing.

“Hopefully we can bring somebody that can help us to be stronger,” said Pellegrino.

“This is our target now and we know that the market is difficult and we are working on that.”

Pellegrino was inevitably asked again about Saints target Theo Walcott, but wasn’t giving anything further away.

“I have been talking about him,” said Pellegrino.

“It’s a good player but in the market with the negotiation I imagine this player will have a lot of possibilities and it’s not easy.”

Saints have done it.

It was tenth time lucky as the team ended their winless run with a 1-0 victory, thanks to a first half goal from James Ward-Prowse.

It wasn’t exactly vintage stuff against a poor Fulham side, but Pellegrino’smen did the job.

Fulham 0-1 Southampton: Ward-Prowse puts Saints into fourth round

Show/hide article…

Saints eased the pressure on manager Mauricio Pellegrino with a deserved 1-0 victory at Fulham in the third round of the FA Cup.

The club slipped to 17th in the Premier League on Tuesday after losing 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace in what was their ninth fixture without victory.

Championship Fulham had also won their previous four games at Craven Cottage, increasing the potential threat involved for an out-of-form side, but they instead progressed to the competition’s next stage with a James Ward-Prowse goal.

Southampton did not begin like a team whose lack of confidence has taken them into contention for relegation, although the same was true of the first half against Palace when they led but still lost.

It was then that Shane Long scored his first goal for 325 days to give them the lead, and in the 10th minute at Fulham with a fine finish he again found the back of the net before being penalised for being narrowly offside.

From Ward-Prowse’s right-wing cross he also flashed a header harmlessly wide when home goalkeeper David Button was out of position, before he was again influential when the visitors took the lead.

Ward-Prowse had just bent wide of the left post after being fed by the creative Sofiane Boufal when with his second chance of the 29th minute he convincingly finished.

Steven Davis controlled Maya Yoshida’s ball out of defence and - via Boufal, Long and a deflection off Kevin McDonald - the ball ended up at the feet of Ward-Prowse in front of goal, who poked under Button.

Southampton and Boufal, recruited by Pellegrino’s predecessor Claude Puel, again threatened when the Moroccan ran from near the corner flag to inside the area and shot low at goal before watching the diving Button tip wide.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was influential during their most recent victory, against Everton in November, and he deserved to double their lead when winning possession, exchanging passes with Long and forcing a save from Button.

Fulham should have scored on the hour. Fine play from Ryan Sessegnon created room to cross, but a reluctance to shoot meant Stefan Johansen and Oliver Norwood instead exchanged passes before Johansen finally shot without conviction and Alex McCarthy saved.

Despite a relative lack of quality, their ability to break with speed and play with a high tempo meant they remained a consistent threat.

From a right-wing corner, Ward-Prowse crossed to Long, whose knock on was headed by Jack Stephens onto the underside of the crossbar.

Fulham then wasted their best chance when, after Norwood crossed into the area from a free-kick and McCarthy spilled the ball and was left on the floor, Denis Odoi connected well with the loose ball but struck it over the crossbar.

Amid growing pressure, Southampton resisted and secured victory, but not before Pellegrino’s decision to replace Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina had led to chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” from the visiting fans.

Southampton move for Walcott but balk at Arsenal’s £25m asking price

Show/hide article…

Southampton will try to negotiate with Arsenal over the signing of Theo Walcott during the January transfer window.

The Premier League strugglers, who secured their first win in 10 matches against Championship Fulham in the FA Cup on Saturday, are desperate to add attacking quality to their squad this window.

Arsenal are said to want more than £25million for Walcott, who enjoys a £110,000-per-week contract that expires at the end of next season.

That is steep money for Southampton, despite the £75m sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool. They will try to open talks with the north Londoners over the possibility of lowering the asking price in order to bring Walcott back to St Mary’s, where he came through the academy.

Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino hopes a big signing such as the England international will bring the fans onside after several jeers were aimed at the Argentine at Craven Cottage.

‘Hopefully we can bring somebody that can help us be stronger,’ he said. ‘This is our target now. We know the market is difficult but we are working on that.’

Asked about Walcott, Pellegrino added: ’He is a good player but I don’t know with the negotiations, with the market. I imagine that this type of player would have a lot of possibility. For us it’s not easy.’

Fulham 0-1 Southampton: Pellegrino defiant

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insisted he will continue to make what he believes to be the best decisions for the team and not purely to please the crowd.

Saints ended a run of nine matches without a win as they defeated Fulham 1-0 in the FA Cup third round at Craven Cottage.

However, Pellegrino was booed and had chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ directed at him from a large section of the 5,000 strong travelling support when he replaced Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina ten minutes from time.

Pellegrino defended the right of the fans to have their say, but was adamant he would continue to do what he thinks is best.

He said: “When I make a change I think it’s the best for the team.

“Sometimes you are playing well like Sofiane who was doing a good game, but when you are playing a bit and the opponent was dominating you you need fresh people.

“This was my vision and when I do the change I try to do the best for my team.”

He added: “It’s difficult to talk about everybody, because in this room we are 20 people and nobody has got the same opinion about football - how to play, who has to play.

“Everybody in football can express their opinion and we have to respect this.”

When asked whether he was upset with the reaction that came his way in a game Saints were winning, he replied: “No, because it’s part of our life.”

Certainly the reaction of the Saints fans, who sold-out the away end at Fulham as they travelled in huge numbers to support the team, proved an unwelcome distraction after the game.

The focus switched immediately back onto Pellegrino and the disgruntlement towards him from sections of the fan base, rather than highlighting a much needed victory, and a passage into the fourth round draw.

Pellegrino needs more victories if he is to win around the fans, but insisted he had no problem with them, and that he is grateful for the support he has received.

“I think the fans with us and with the team were great from the beginning until the end and from the first game until today I cannot complain against anything,” he said.

“I have to be grateful about the mood in our stadium and away because they have been behind us all the time.

“I understand the fans have their opinion but when I do something I am thinking about the players and not the fans.

“I am thinking about my experience and what is best for this moment.”
