U18 Report: Saints 3-1 West Ham

Show/hide article…

Both sides were reduced to ten men, after two first-half dismissals, while goals from attacking trio Michael Obafemi, Harlem Hale and Jonathan Afolabi earned the three points.

The win extends Saints’ recent purple patch, who will make the trip north to Blackpool in a confident mood, as attention now turns to the next round of the FA Youth Cup.

Disappointingly, the teenage Saints found themselves behind in the sixth minute, as an unstoppable free-kick was whipped goalward by Anouar El Mhassani. Left of centre, the shot curled neatly in to the top corner, with Alex Cull helpless, and the visitors gaining an early advantage.

Eager for a quick response, the home side were immediately down the other end, fashioning a goalscoring chance of their own. Afolabi outmuscled his opposition defender, before spotting the back post run of Hale, who applied too much contact to the finish and sent the ball sailing over the bar.

But parity was restored in the 19th minute, and deservedly so. Obafemi, astute as ever, latched on to a long ball before cleverly rounding both 'keeper and last defender. With the goal gaping, the striker calmly rolled the ball in to an empty net, drawing Saints level.

Yet as quickly as the hosts had levelled the tie, Craig Fleming’s side suffered another setback. Harry Hamblin lunged in to a late tackle, and received a straight red for his misjudgement. Perhaps harshly, Saints were forced to play the remaining hour with a man less.

Undeterred by the dismissal, the home side were straight on the front foot. Some ingenious wide play from Afolabi gifted a chance for Javen Siu, who beat Rihards Matrevics, but couldn’t evade the outstretched leg of covering midfielder Kristijan Belic.

A lively first-half was concluded by a second dismissal, this time for West Ham’s Belic - whose goalline heroics had prevented Saints taking the lead seconds prior. The midfielder received successive cautions, culminating in a red card, for a series of unfortunately timed challenges.

In a bid to match the first-half drama, barely two minutes had elapsed before Saints were in front. Hale capitalised on a goalkeeping error, after Jake Vokins had done the leg work, side-footing in to the far corner and leaving Matrevics stranded.

Christoph Klarer went close moments later, crashing an effort off the crossbar from a Vokins corner, as the home side began to assert their dominance. And the scoreline soon reflected Saints’ governance.

Afolabi was the beneficiary, as the home side put a two goal cushion between themselves and the young Hammers. Will Smallbone’s pinpoint cross was dispatched by the wideman, who out jumped Ashby at the back post and powered his header home.

Substitute Enzo Robise struck an assertive free-kick off the upright minutes from time, in the hope of opening his club account. Inches away from a fourth, the effort fell fortuitously to Matrevics, who inadvertently flapped at the ball to clear the danger.

Southampton were deserving of the three points though, in an encounter where the referee’s - somewhat rash - decisions dictated the talking points, but the home side delivered a mature performance to warrant the win and maximum spoils.

Butterfield: Deserving of the win

Show/hide article…

The teenagers overcame a double first-half blow, after conceding the opener and suffering a dubious sending off, to emerge comfortable winners by virtue of goals from Michael Obafemi - his twelfth of the season - Harlem Hale and Jonathan Afolabi.

While asserting that his young side were deserving of maximum points, Butterfield acknowledged that Saints will need to sharpen up defensively in order to extend their recent purple patch beyond today’s result.

“The way we’ve played second half, we definitely deserved the win,” the ex-Saints defender began.

"There is a lot to learn from a situation like that, when the referee makes such erratic decisions. But it is a learning curve; emotionally the boys have got to deal with the sending off.

"The leveller gave us a lift. For their character building, it is sometimes helpful to go a goal down, they reacted well. They remained competitive, which is a big plus, but we have to be better defensively so we aren’t going behind in games.

"It was important we got a positive result before the Youth Cup tie next week - although I didn’t think we were completely at the levels shown before the Christmas break.

“Plenty to learn and the boys need to use today as a big kick start.”

Saints march into Fourth Round

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse’s left-footed drive was enough to secure Saints’ spot in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup at the expense of Fulham on Saturday.

Southampton had progressed past lower league opponents in 17 of their last 18 FA Cup ties before this afternoon and made no mistake at Craven Cottage, the midfielder’s confident strike deciding an engaging tie by the Thames.

Mauricio Pellegrino made two changes to the side beaten by Crystal Palace earlier in the week with Jan Bednarek and Steven Davis replacing Jérémy Pied and Dušan Tadić in the starting XI, the former making just his second appearance of the season.

Saints began much the brighter and had already threatened to breach the Fulham defence a handful of times before Ward-Prowse’s low finish on the half-hour.

A narrow offside call prevented Shane Long from adding to his effort at St Mary’s on Tuesday night inside 10 minutes, the Irishman crashing a shot into the net following Steven Davis’ smart back-heel.

The number seven flashed a header off target shortly afterwards before Ward-Prowse curled just wide of the post as the visitors began to take control.

The opening goal was not far behind; Maya Yoshida’s long ball forward found Davis in the corner of the box and the skipper’s through pass fortuitously deflected into the path of Ward-Prowse to sweep low into the corner left-footed.

Sofiane Boufal was unfortunate not to double the advantage moments later, firing straight at David Button on the angle after a devilish touch to escape Ryan Fredricks by the corner flag.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men sustained their grip on the game into the second half.

For all of the home side’s perspiration in central areas, the second balls were going the way of Saints and more often than not falling at the feet of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. The Dane’s tenacity almost yielded a second goal immediately after the interval.

A steal in midfield and one-two with Long sprung Højbjerg in behind the Fulham defence only to be denied by a sprawling Button from six yards out.

Against the run of play, Rui Fonte might have drawn the Cottagers level at the other end the Portuguese narrowly failing to connect with a low cross to the back post following a rare lapse in Saints concentration.

Nevertheless, a second away goal on the counter-attack always remained the more likely outcome and the tie could have been over 15 minutes from time were it not for the crossbar.

Long’s near-post flick on found Jack Stephens unmarked at the back post, the defender’s header smacking off the woodwork in front of the 5,000 travelling Saints fans behind the goal.

Nathan Redmond, Mario Lemina and Manolo Gabbiadini entered from the bench to keep intensity high into the closing stages as Fulham pushed hard but failed to meaningfully test Alex McCarthy.

Ryan Sessegnon crossed for Oliver Norwood to tamely head wide on 88 minutes, the closest Slavisa Jokanovic’s side could come to forcing a replay.

The Fourth Round awaits.

REPORT: Ward-Prowse fires Saints into FA Cup fourth round

Show/hide article…

Not even a first win in 10 could stop Southampton’s supporters from turning on under-pressure manager Mauricio Pellegrino at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The Premier League side avoided an FA Cup upset against Championship Fulham but it was Pellegrino’s decision to withdraw Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the second half that drew protests.

Loud jeers were directed at the away dugout despite them leading 1-0 through James Ward-Prowse’s goal, and Pellegrino has work to do to get in the fans’ good books.

‘When I make a change I think it is best for the team,’ Pellegrino said. 'When the opponent is dominating, you need fresh players. I am not upset.

'I understand when the fans have their opinions but when I am doing something I am thinking about my team and my players and not the fans.

‘It is an important result for us. (We can) hopefully use this game as a base to improve every single week.’

This came less than 24 hours after Virgil van Dijk marked his Liverpool debut with a winner in the Merseyside derby. Southampton are £75million richer but are a team that lack quality.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham, it has to be said, were woeful. Up against a side that had not won since November, they struggled for shots on target.

Pellegrino put out a strong side, with Fulham making the more changes, and Jokanovic said: ‘They showed in one situation some Premier League quality, they scored the goal, they won the game.’

It was in the 29th minute when Southampton scored what would turn out to be their winner.

A long ball to Sofiane Boufal saw the Moroccan feed Shane Long, who then got lucky as his attempt at a one-two saw the ball bounce off Fulham captain Kevin McDonald.

It handed Ward-Prowse the opportunity to score and the midfielder made no mistake, burying the ball beyond David Button.

The surprised away supporters then sang ‘We scored a goal’ followed by: ‘How s_*_ must you be? We’re winning away.’

Pellegrino’s decision to replace Hojbjerg with Mario Lemina led to loud boos and a feeling that one win against inferior Championship opponents cannot solve all of this manager’s problems.
