FA Cup 4th round fixtures: Man United will visit lowest-ranked Yeovil

Show/hide article…

Manchester United were sensationally drawn against the lowest-ranked team left in the FA Cup, Yeovil Town, for the fourth round of the FA Cup

The draw, which took place before Brighton and Crystal Palace’s third-round tie at the AMEX Stadium, has pitted one of the most decorated side’s in English football against the League Two outfit.

The Glovers, who sit 63 league places behind 12-time Cup winners United, downed Bradford in the last round to make it into the draw and have reaped the rewards with a dream fixture against Jose Mourinho’s men.

Yeovil will welcome the English giants, who swept aside Derby in the last round, to the 9,665-capacity Huish Park at the end of the month.

Tottenham were also drawn against a League Two outfit and will travel to Rodney Parade to play Newport.

Mike Flynn’s men beat Leeds in a dramatic third-round tie which saw Shawn McCoulsky net a decisive 89th-minute goal for the Welsh club to put them through to the fourth round.

Seven-time winners Liverpool and West Brom have been drawn against one another in the only tie certain to be an all-Premier League encounter.

Chelsea could host Newcastle, but Antonio Conte’s side must first overcome Norwich — who held the Premier League champions to a goalless draw at Carrow Road last weekend — in next Tuesday’s third-round replay.

Similarly, Bournemouth could host West Ham in a top-flight clash should both teams come through unscathed in their refire fixtures against Wigan and Shrewsbury respectively.

Premier League flyers Manchester City face a tasty trip to either Cardiff or Mansfield and Leicester must negotiate a replay against Fleetwood if they are to take on Peterborough at the ABAX Stadium.

Nottingham Forest, who knocked out current Cup holders Arsenal with a stunning 4-2 victory at the City Ground last Sunday, will travel to Championship outfit Hull as reward.

All fourth-round fixtures will be played on the weekend of January 26-29 January.

Saints to face Watford in the FA Cup fourth round

Show/hide article…

Southampton have been drawn at home against fellow Premier League side Watford in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Saints will host Watford on the weekend of 26th to 29th January after beating Championship side Fulham in the third round at Craven Cottage, thanks to a James Ward-Prowse strike.

Watford also progressed through the third round by beating Championship opposition after a 3-0 home success against Bristol City, with André Carillo, Etienne Capoue and Troy Deeney on target.

The last time the two sides met in the FA Cup was back in April 2003, when Saints booked their place in the final with goals from Brett Ormerod and a Paul Robinson own goal at Villa Park.

An exact date and ticketing details for the tie will be confirmed in due course.

Mauricio Pellegrino eyes forwards to fire him back into fans’ good books

Show/hide article…

Under-pressure Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino wants to spend on a striker this month as he desperately looks to add goals to his team.

Saints will see their coffers boosted by the sale of Virgil van Dijk, although they have had to pay out a large chunk of the initial fee from Liverpool to the Dutchman’s former clubs Celtic, who had a sell-on clause.

And while the Argentinean will look to strengthen his defence as well, the priority is on attacking players and a Saints return for Walcott is something that the club will look at if the price is right.

The former England international’s wages are a stumbling block, with a weekly wage of around £140,000 per week way out of Southampton’s reach. Whether Arsenal are ready to pay a portion of his wages to get him off the books is likely to define if he moves this month.

If Walcott proves to be too expensive then Monaco centre-forward Guido Carrillo is another player that Pellegrino is considering. The 26-year-old striker is a backup with the Ligue 1 side but played under Pellegrino at Estudiantes in his native Argentina.

Carrillo scored a hat-trick in Saturday’s Coupe de France clash with Moulins Yzeure, but has struggled for game time in Ligue 1 where Falcao, Stevan Jovetic and summer signing Balde Keita have started the majority of games.

He is a player that Pellegrino knows and that might be the most important thing for the Saints boss at this juncture. The 5,000 travelling Southampton fans pointedly jeered their manager for his substitutions in the FA Cup win at Fulham, during which they were completely outplayed by a mid-table Championship side, and he admitted afterwards that they had been “dominated” by the Cottagers. The feeling among the support is that the former Rafael Benitez assistant is too conservative.

Pellegrino remained coy once again on the club’s interest in bringing Walcott back to Southampton but admitted earlier in the window that he has four or five targets.

“I think we are on the market ready to try to bring somebody that wants to come. I know that will be difficult because in January it is not easy to bring players.

“The market is huge and I think we have some opportunities. We have four, five or six targets, we have got confidence that someone else can come. There are many players that we have got interest but I can’t say anything. Obviously Walcott is an excellent player but I can’t confirm this.”

Manchester United to face Yeovil in FA Cup fourth round at Huish Park

Show/hide article…

Manchester United will head to League Two side Yeovil in the FA Cup fourth round while Newport County will host Tottenham.

Yeovil welcome United in the FA Cup for the second time in four seasons having this time been pitted against Jose Mourinho’s men in the fourth round.

The Glovers were the lowest-ranked side in Monday night’s draw and were handed a home clash with the 12-time winners, as they were in 2015 when United won 2-0 in the third round thanks to goals from Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria.

Yeovil boss Darren Way told the club’s website: "I don’t think I could pick anyone better to go up against in the world we live in at the moment.

“It was an extraordinary achievement to get to the fourth round and to get Manchester United is a special moment for the club. The players and supporters deserve it. It’s going to be a magical day.”

Fellow League Two side Newport will be looking to cause another upset at Rodney Parade as they entertain Tottenham after knocking out Championship side Leeds in the third round.

Mansfield, another club from the fourth tier, have the carrot of welcoming Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to Field Mill if they can overcome Cardiff at home in a replay.

Seven-time winners Liverpool are at home to West Brom, while Nottingham Forest, who knocked out holders Arsenal on Sunday, are at Hull.

Ties to be played over the weekend of January 26-29.
