Southampton set to sign Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina for £16m

Show/hide article…

Southampton look to have beaten Stoke City to Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina after offering £16.2million.

The 23-year-old is in London with the Juventus squad who faced Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday.

Stoke had held talks on Friday with the Italian champions while West Ham had also posted an interest.

However, Southampton have offered £16.2m plus £1.8m in add-ons for the Gabon international who is keen to link up with Mauricio Pellegrino.

Lemina, who joined Juventus in 2015 from Marseille, is expected to have a medical at Southampton on Monday.

Southampton have been relatively quiet in the transfer market - the £5.7million signing of Polish defender Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan remains their only purchase of the window so far.

Pellegrino’s side begin their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Swansea on August 12.

Pellegrino pleased with signs of progression

Show/hide article…

Goals from Jack Stephens and Manolo Gabbiadini either side of the interval were enough to win the game.

And as Pellegrino continues to implement his ideas, the Saints boss felt the signs of improvement were evident against quality opposition.

“It was a tough game with tempo. We played against a Champions League team with quality and we were in trouble because we were running behind the ball a lot,” Pellegrino reflected.

“The good news for us is the spirit that we had in the game. Little by little we got better and got confidence from the goal.

“We have to keep going and to keep improving. We need time and games so that they know the new ideas and have the best connection between them but I am happy because my players were giving everything,

“Today we saw on the pitch some moments where we played well, we were strong and we protected the corridor in the middle of the pitch.”

Pellegrino plays down £16m Lemina link

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has played down suggestions that Saints are about to complete a £16m deal for Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina.

Reports have suggested that Lemina is set to undergo a medical at St Mary’s tomorrow ahead of the move.

However, after the 2-0 win over Sevilla, the new Saints boss said: “I don’t know anything about him.

“We are studying the market with some options.

“It is difficult to bring in important players and hopefully some of them can come in to make us stronger.”

Pellegrino was pleased with the victory in the final game of pre-season and reflected: “It was a difficult game because we play against a really good team, a Champions League team who the last few years were on the top of Europe, not just the top of Spain.

“We realise how we had to confront these type of games.

“We were running too much from my point of view and we have to improve our capacity to have the ball under pressure.

“It is a process and I think we are in a good way because the spirit of the team is good.

“I think more or less we improve our dynamic and we were strong in the middle, something that happened last Wednesday on the pitch, and we had to keep going."

Southampton 2-0 Sevilla: Saints sign off with a win

Show/hide article…

Saints signed off for pre-season with a morale boosting 2-0 win over Sevilla at St Mary’s.

Goals in either half from Jack Stephens and Manolo Gabbiadini ensured that Mauricio Pellegrino’s side quickly shrugged off the heavy midweek loss to Augsburg and built some confidence ahead of the Premier League opener against Swansea.

Stephens’ heavily deflected opener was also the first Saints goal at St Mary’s since April 5, with the team having gone five games without scoring at the end of last season.

Saints started the game positively, and tried to get on the front foot from the off.

Manolo Gabbiadini was playing through the middle as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1.

However, the early concern was that Saints looked a little nervy at the back.

Fraser Forster had his first taste of action on five minutes as Luis Muriel was found from the right, but a heavy first touch on the edge of the six yard box gave the Saints keeper the chance to dive on the loose ball.

Muriel was in the thick of the action again seven minutes later as he picked up the ball and ran forward from deep.

He eventually made his way to the edge of the area and took on a shot but it was straight at Forster.

Sevilla were doing a good job at keeping the ball and testing Saints’ discipline, but Pellegrino’s men broke free and worked Sergio Rico for the first time on 20 minutes.

Gabbiadini drilled in a low shot from outside the area that the Sevilla keeper got down to his left to save.

The Italian almost turned provider moments later as he fizzed a superb low ball across the six yard box which James Ward-Prowse wasn’t quite able to reach.

Saints were suddenly on top and Nathan Redmond was the next to work Rico with a shot from 20 yards forcing the keeper to save at his near post.

The pressure paid off on 26 minutes as Saints converted from the corner.

The goal owed a certain to good fortune as the ball came through to Jack Stephens at the far post and he managed to convert, albeit via a considerable deflection.

There was a brief moment of panic in the Saints penalty area as a left wing free kick caused a few problems but Saints were eventually able to clear the danger.

Sevilla continued to enjoy prolonged spells of possession for the remainder of the first half, but Saints showed great discipline with their defending.

They were prepared to get everybody behind the ball, drop deep and make themselves very hard to break down.

With Sevilla having so little room in and around the box they weren’t able to pick Saints apart with their intricate passing game, and Pellegrino’s men went in at half time with their one goal advantage still in place.

Sevilla made a raft of half time changes – switching nine of their ten outfield players - as they tried to give their squad game time bearing in mind they are also playing Everton on Sunday.

Saints had a chance to try and double their lead eight minutes after the restart as Dusan Tadic was brought down just outside the area in a central position as he broke forward.

Gabbiadini drilled the free kick hard and low into the wall.

The ball ricocheted about in the area and came to Stephens, who was stood on his own seven yards from goal and produced a good finish to turn home.

However, after a few moments of deliberation the linesman raised his flag for offside and the goal was ruled out.

Maya Yoshida needed an extended period of treatment after taking a heavy whack on his left leg. He tried to carry on but eventually signalled to the bench he needed to be replaced with Jan Bednarek coming on for him on 63 minutes.

At the same time Saints brought on young defender Jake Flannigan for Cedric Soares, who got a solid first outing of pre-season under his belt.

Sofiane Boufal was the next to make his entrance, as he came on for Redmond.

All the changes made the second half much more disjointed than the first had been. There was little sense of rhythm to the match due to the disruptions and both sides were struggling to find any real rhythm.

Shane Long was given a chance to impress as he replaced Ward-Prowse on 73 minutes.

In what was the first meaningful effort on goal of the second half, substitute Flannigan worked Rico.

He produced a well-controlled half volley from inside the area that Rico had to parry away.

Saints continued their forward momentum and bagged a second goal eight minutes from time.

It was well worked and a pleasingly slick move.

Tadic played the ball into Steven Davis, whose nice flicked touch found Gabbiadini, and he produced a clinical low finish for 2-0.

That was the Italian’s last action as Sam Gallagher came on to replace him, while Sam McQueen was introduced for Ryan Bertrand.

Saints got another set-piece chance from a free kick in the final minutes of the game.

This time it was from longer range 25 yards out and to the right of centre.

Tadic stepped up to take it and tried to get it up and down but it sailed over the bar.

The Serbian had another sight of goal in stoppage time as Boufal drove a corner to him just inside the area. It was a technically tough chance which Tadic scuffed and it was cleared with what proved to be the last action of the game.

Players and coaches then watched the match, ahead of the first round of their games beginning tomorrow across a wide range of locations, including Staplewood Campus, Wide Lane Sports Ground, Test Park, Salisbury FC, Blackfield and Langley FC and Brockenhurst FC.

Pre-season friendlies: Tottenham beat Juventus; good wins for Swansea, Southampton

Show/hide article…

Tottenham concluded their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory over Serie A champions Juventus at Wembley Stadium.

Harry Kane opened the scoring with a header in the 10th minute and Christian Eriksen added a second seven minutes after half-time after receiving a Dele Alli pass and beating Gianluigi Buffon.

The victory at their home for the season might have been even more emphatic, but Kane and Moussa Sissoko both struck the woodwork, while Hugo Lloris made two fine saves to deny Juan Cuadrado and Paulo Dybala.

The only sour note for Mauricio Pochettino was an injury to right-back Kieran Trippier, who set up Kane’s goal but limped off after 42 minutes.

Southampton gave themselves a boost ahead of next weekend’s Premier League opener against Swansea City with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla.

Goals from Jack Stephens and Manolo Gabbiadini did the damage for Mauricio Pellegrino’s team.

Stephens’ first-half volley gave Saints the advantage going into the break, before Gabbiadini doubled the advantage with a neat finish eight minutes from time.

However, next weekend’s opponents Swansea enjoyed an emphatic victory themselves, beating Sampdoria 4-0 at the Liberty Stadium.

Leroy Fer headed in a Tom Carroll corner in the first half before Ricky Alvarez scored a calamitous own goal seconds after the break to double the Swans’ lead.

Tammy Abraham netted from close range (65) to score on his home debut after joining on loan from Chelsea before Federico Fernandez headed home the fourth 13th minutes from time.

Liverpool ended their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 3-1 win against Athletic Bilbao at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday.

Roberto Firmino’s penalty was cancelled out by Inaki Williams’s well-taken strike in the first half, but after Jurgen Klopp made 10 changes at the break, his side scored twice more courtesy of Ben Woodburn (59) and Dominic Solanke (80).

Frank de Boer’s first game in the Selhurst Park dugout ended in stalemate as Crystal Palace drew 1-1 with FC Schalke.

The Eagles trailed at the break when Pablo Insua netted just before half-time but Christian Benteke equalised on the hour mark with a header after some speedy work down the flank by Wilfried Zaha.

The result means Palace are unbeaten in their last three pre-season matches ahead of their season opener with Premier League new boys Huddersfield next weekend.

The Graham Taylor Trophy was shared as Watford and Real Sociedad played out a goalless draw on a poignant day to celebrate the Hornets legendary former boss.

Stoke repaid their 1,000 travelling fans with a 2-1 victory over last season’s Bundesliga’s runner-up RB Leipzig.

Emil Forsberg handed the Germans the lead from the spot before Mame Diouf powered home a header from an Xherdan Shaqiri corner. A Marvin Compper own-goal proved the difference between the teams.

Meanwhile, Burnley’s pre-season friendly at home to Hannover had to be abandoned on police advice.

The Clarets were leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to a goal from Ben Mee when the announcement came.

A short statement on the club’s Twitter account read: “Today’s game has been abandoned, on police advice.”

Photographs showed unrest in the stands, with police holding back Hannover fans from their home counterparts.

Southampton agree deal to sign Mario Lemina from Juventus

Show/hide article…

Southampton have agreed a deal to sign midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News understands the Saints will pay an initial £16m for the 23-year-old, with the deal potentially rising to £20m.

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri confirmed Lemina would be leaving the club following his side’s 2-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday.

Lemina is expected to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of his move to St Mary’s and is set to become manager Mauricio Pellegrino’s second signing of the summer following the arrival of Jan Bednarek at the club.

Southampton are also set to beat Premier League rivals Stoke to the signature of Lemina, with Potters having held talks with Juventus over a possible deal on Friday.

Lemina joined Juventus from Marseille in 2015 and has since helped the club win two Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia cups.

He is a Gabon international and has been capped by his national side on nine occasions, scoring twice.

Transfer News LIVE: Deals, gossip and rumours as they break throughout the day

7.00am: Ian Rush hopes Philippe Coutinho will agree to stay at Liverpool for one more season - just like Luis Suarez.

Barcelona are expected to up their interest in Coutinho in the coming weeks as they look to spend the money earned from Neymar’s move to Paris St-Germain.

But Rush wants to see the Brazil international remain at Anfield to help them in the Champions League.

Rush said: "From a Liverpool point of view, I’d love to see Coutinho stay for another year to see how they can do in the Champions League and take it from there.

“We’ve done it with Suarez. Let’s hope he’s still there come Christmas.”

6.10am: Manchester United and Chelsea are prepared to activate Sergi Roberto’s release clause at Barcelona.

Roberto’s contract doesn’t run out until 2019 but he has a release clause of £36m and with the likes of Paulinho, Philippe Coutinho and many others linked with a move to the Nou Camp, he could find himself slipping down the pecking order at Barcelona.

And Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Chelsea, United and Monaco are all prepared to match Roberto’s release clause in what could spark a bidding war.
