Netherlands boss urges Southampton to sell Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Netherlands manager Dick Advocaat has urged Southampton to allow Virgil van Dijk to move to Liverpool this summer after the defender was left to train alone.

The Dutch defender was due to leave St Mary’s for Anfield earlier in the summer transfer window for £50m, but the Reds were forced to pull out of the signing and publicly apologise to the Saints after they threatened to lodge a complaint with the Premier League over an “illegal approach”.

But Van Dijk is still adamant he wants a move away from the south coast and has been training on his own away from the rest of his teammates during preseason as he continues to push for a move to Liverpool.

But former Sunderland coach Advocaat has sympathy for his centre-back and believes Southampton should pander to his wishes, despite admitting he sees why Van Dijk’s actions are being condemned.

“You can condemn it (Van Dijk’s actions), but come on, if you can earn five times as much at a top English club then I understand that,” he told Dutch outlet AD.

However, new Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino has reiterated that he expects the club not to sell Van Dijk and harbours hope that he will convince him to stay for another season.

“The situation is the same. I can’t say no more, because the situation is the boy is aside of the team because he doesn’t want to play for us,” the Southampton manager said after his side’s 4-0 preseason defeat to Augsburg.

“I would like to bring the boy and to persuade him that he’s important for us and the club will not sell him. We are expecting the best for everyone, even for Virgil, but he doesn’t want to be part of the team.”

Juventus’ Mario Lemina set for Southampton medical - sources

Show/hide article…

Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina is set for a medical at Southampton on Sunday, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.

Stoke are also interested in Lemina and hope to hijack Southampton’s deal for the Gabon international, with Juve in London this weekend to play Tottenham in a friendly at Wembley.

Lemina has spent the last two seasons at Juventus after initially joining on loan from Marseille before making the move to Turin permanent last summer.

The 23-year-old has struggled to hold a place in Massimiliano Allegri’s side and he could be tempted to move on in search of regular first-team football.

A number of other clubs in the Premier League and across Europe are monitoring Lemina’s situation at Juventus.

Saints launch Big Issue partnership

Show/hide article…

The partnership will see a special Southampton FC edition of The Big Issue sold by vendors across Southampton and the surrounding area, including Portswood, Lordshill, Bitterne, Ringwood, Lymington, Eastleigh, Romsey, Winchester, Salisbury and Isle of Wight (Newport, Ryde and Cowes) from Monday 7th August, and distributed as the official matchday programme at the club’s first game of the season, against Swansea City, on Saturday 12th August.

For those who live outside of this area it will be available from The Big Issue online shop from 7th August.

As part of the initiative, Big Issue vendors will also be provided with the opportunity to enrol in an eight-week employability programme, run by Saints Foundation, which will equip them with job-ready skills and offer work placements across the club.

Upon completion of the course, vendors will then be able to apply for long-term appointments with Southampton Football Club.

Improving the lives of vulnerable adults is at the core of both Saints Foundation and Big Issue’s missions – ‘Potential into Excellence’ and ‘Hand-Up, Not Hand-Out’, respectively – and, in coming together, they hope to create long-term job prospects for Big Issue vendors in the local area.

Greg Baker, Head of Saints Foundation and Community Partnerships at Southampton Football Club, said: “Southampton is a club built around tradition and family, and this partnership is an exciting way to begin the new season and help drive further positive change amongst our community.

"We’re delighted to help provide adults in and around the area with opportunities and skills they need to take the first step towards a fruitful career – whether that be with Southampton Football Club or elsewhere – and we hope to see fans and residents alike get involved with the campaign to support local vendors.”

Big Issue vendor Lee Barnes said: “When I first started to sell the magazine, I’d hide behind it, but The Big Issue brought myself out a bit more, developed me a bit more, gave me a bit of confidence and made me see that there may be a future beyond this.”

Fellow vendor Mark Morgan said: “Since I started doing The Big Issue, it has got me my confidence back. I’ve got somewhere to live and I’m saving money I earn from it. I wouldn’t have had that chance of getting a normal job, being homeless. I don’t know where I’d be now if I hadn’t started doing it.”

Big Issue Editor Paul McNamee said: “This is a tremendous project to be involved with. It shows that Southampton FC, and Saints Foundation, share The Big Issue ideals of building new ways to allow the poorest in society to fight poverty, and work their way out of it.

"It shows that football can cut through in ways that other avenues can’t. It shows how The Big Issue is growing and is in a unique position to do something like this with a Premier League club.”

Big Issue MD Russell Blackman said: "The joining forces of Saints Foundation and The Big Issue reflects our shared values and commitment to a more equal society, supporting those whose lives have been blighted by poverty and a lack of opportunity. Saints Foundation do invaluable work supporting adults across the community, tackling social exclusion and raising aspirations.

“The Big Issue looks forward to developing a partnership that will look to harness the passion of the club and its fanbase to inspire, support and further our mission to dismantle poverty through the creation of opportunity."

The Big Issue special edition will available to buy from Monday 7th August, from Big Issue vendors across the Southampton and Hampshire area for £2.50.

Southampton 2-0 Sevilla - are you in our fan pictures?

Show/hide article…

It was a much needed win for Saints ahead of their Premier League opener against Swansea next weekend.

The first goal came after a first-half corner reached Jack Stephens six yards out. He produced a side footed finish which appeared to take a deflection before finding the back of the net.

The next came during a spell of slick passing football from Saints in the second-half

Tadic’s ball found Davis who produced a lovely flick of a touch to turn the ball on to Gabbiadini slammed it home with a clinical low finish.

Chief photographer Stuart Martin was at St Mary’s Stadium to capture all of the action - so be sure to check out the pictures above.

DEAL CLOSE! Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina set for Southampton medical

Show/hide article…

Southampton are set to beat a host of clubs to the signature of Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina, according to reports.

The Gabon international had been expected to head to Sevilla as part of Steven N’Zonzi’s proposed transfer to the Serie A giants.

But the Saints have moved to the head of the queue for the 23-year-old and it is understood he will undergo a medical with the Premier League side on Sunday.

According to RMC Sport, Lemina will complete his transfer in the coming days after Southampton agreed a £16.2million fee with Juventus.

Southampton are likely to face late competition from the likes of West Ham, Everton and Arsenal, who have all been linked with a move for the midfielder.
