Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Southampton star refusing to hand in transfer request

Show/hide article…

The Dutch international has made it clear to Southampton that he wants to leave the club this summer.

Liverpool is his preferred destination but Southampton are reluctant to do business with the Merseyside club after complaining to the Premier League over their approach for Van Dijk.

The Reds were forced to apologise and even stated at the time that they ended their interest in the player.

But Van Dijk has since refused to be involved in Southampton’s pre-season plans and is currently training alone to push through a move.

Liverpool transfer news: Virgil van Dijk update, Coutinho plea, Klopp new midfielder

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has not handed in a transfer request at Southampton to push through a move to Liverpool.

That’s according to the Irish Independent who claim Van Dijk has only made a verbal request to leave St Mary’s.

The Dutch international has refused to take part in Southampton’s pre-season plans and is currently training alone.

But it is reported Van Dijk doesn’t want to hand in a transfer request as he will lose out on a huge cash settlement from his five-year contract at Southampton.

Ian Rush hopes Liverpool can hold onto Philippe Coutinho for at least one more season.

Pellegrino insists Saints team not yet set

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino will make a final decision on his team for the opening Premier League game against Swansea when he has seen which players are ‘mentally prepared’ for the start of the season.

Saints signed off their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla at St Mary’s with Pellegrino fielding what looked the side he will select for the visit of Swansea on Saturday.

However, he insisted that he has not yet finalised his starting line-up for the big opener, and will be assessing his squad during training this week.

He said: “No, because I have got an idea but I take the decision at the end with my intuition when I see which of them are more prepared mentally to compete.

“We are ready and looking forward to do our best.

“The players are fit, all of them, and this is the good news.

“This is the process and we have to keep going and to improve every single week because some of them came back two weeks ago and need more minutes to improve the dynamic on the pitch.

“They are realising the demands of the manager and we have to keep going.”

He added: “We were doing some experiments with some players.

“The other day Ward-Prowse inside, Shane Long outside, and other players out of position, but I have to see different options for the future.

“You never know because football is changing all the time and we have players who can play and that is good news for us.”

The victory over Sevilla came courtesy of goals from Jack Stephens and Manolo Gabbiadini and was a welcome victory after the 4-0 defeat to Augsburg just a few days earlier.

“It was a difficult game because we play against a really good team, a Champions League team who the last few years were on the top of Europe, not just the top of Spain,” said Pellegrino of the Sevilla test.

“We realise how we had to confront these type of games.

“We were running too much from my point of view and we have to improve our capacity to have the ball under pressure.

“It is a process and I think we are in a good way because the spirit of the team is good.

“I think more or less we improve our dynamic and we were strong in the middle, something that happened last Wednesday on the pitch, and we had to keep going.”

Stephens ready for Swansea

Show/hide article…

Stephens scored the opener as Saints completed their pre-season preparation with a 2-0 victory over the La Liga side at St Mary’s.

“We’ve had enough of pre-season now,” started the centre back.

“It’s been really hard and we’ve enjoyed it, but it’s nothing compared to the season and we want that to start as soon as possible. We are very much looking forward to next Saturday.

“I think the clean sheet against Sevila is pleasing for me and the team. It gives us something to build on for next week and the season coming forward.”

Stephens’ first-half opener was followed by a late Manolo Gabbiadni strike to confirm victory for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

And the 23-year-old stressed the importance of getting back to winning way following the defeat to FC Augsburg.

“Having lost so heavily on Wednesday it was important,” Stephens continued.

“We needed to react to that and make sure we put in a good performance in our last performance to build momentum.

“It’s always nice to get a goal and that’s a bonus. But first and foremost for us as a defence a clean sheet is what we want.”
