Southampton FC transfer news: Atletico Madrid forward Luciano Vietto wanted in loan deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton keen on signing Atletico Madrid outcast Luciano Vietto on loan this summer.

It is only two years ago that Atletico paid Villarreal around £17m to land the striker, but it has not gone well since.

Vietto has managed just 12 LaLiga starts for the club and was shipped out on loan to Sevilla last term.

He scored six times in 21 league games during what was considered a mixed spell for the Argentinean.

And now, despite Atletico being under a transfer ban, they are looking to move him on again before the window closes.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, they are hoping to sell him permanently and recoup some of the money they spent on him in 2015.

However, so far they have received only loan offers – and Southampton are among the clubs to have shown an interest.

Marseille, Valencia and Sampdoria have also enquired so it looks as though the 23-year-old will have his pick of clubs.

Southampton 2017/18 Premier League season preview

Show/hide article…

More pessimistic supporters will be tempted to conclude that not enough has changed. Three seasons ago Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren all left the club for bigger things, a year later they were joined by Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne, while last summer it was Sadio Mané and Victor Wanyama’s turn to quit.

Virgil van Dijk is the latest to decide that Southampton can no longer match his ambition. To the club’s great credit they have dug their heels in and insisted he will not be sold, but his very public transfer request — in which he claimed the club had left him feeling “insulted” and “disappointed” — could yet force the chairman’s hand.

The Van Dijk saga has robbed new manager Mauricio Pellegrino of anything resembling a honeymoon period. But his appointment has gone down well with fans, who were longing for an end to Claude Puel’s brief tenure. The Frenchman was far too defensive and, although he did lead Southampton to a 8th-place finish, it is important to note that they accrued only six more points than 17th-place Watford.

Pellegrino is not an experienced manager, but has a reputation for achieving success without resorting to blowing millions in the transfer market, which suits Southampton down to a tee. And fortunately for him, the club have been handed an exceptionally kind opening set of fixtures: Swansea, West Ham, Huddersfield and Watford are first up.

The club broke their transfer record to bring Mario Lemina in from Juventus, for £18m. The 23-year-old Gabon international, who plays in midfield, spent two seasons playing in Italy, during which time he won the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia twice, and played in last season’s Champions League final against Real Madrid.

He’s an exciting arrival. But he will take time to develop, having scored just five goals in his career so far, and never having played more than 30 games in a season. As with last summer’s marquee signing Sofiane Boufal, he needs time.

As does the club’s other signing: 21-year-old Poland defender Jan Bednarek. The centre-back was a first-team regular at Lech Poznan but will likely be used as defensive cover in his first season at St Mary’s. Providing, that is, Van Dijk doesn’t leave the club at the final hour.

Jay Rodriguez is the only high-profile departure so far, moving to West Brom for £12m. The young defender Jason McCarthy moves to Barnsley on a permanent deal, while Harrison Reed joins Norwich on loan.

Cuco Martina and Martín Cáceres were allowed to leave the club on a free at the end of last season, and have joined Everton and Hellas Verona respectively.

Assuming that Van Dijk is still throwing a temper tantrum come Southampton’s first game this weekend, their starting XI could look a lot like this:

Expect to see new signings Lemima and Bednarek integrated slowly into the first-team, rather than chucked in at the deep end.

Can Southampton spring into life in the transfer market?

It is still looking more likely than not that Van Dijk will leave the club before the transfer window shuts. If he does, Southampton have to act quickly and sign a central defender capable of slotting straight into their first team. They are far too thin at the back to leave it until January.

Signing another goalkeeper to provide some competition for Forster wouldn’t go amiss, either.

The new signings adjust to English football quickly, Gabbiadini begins banging in the goals again and Southampton sneak into the top seven.

Van Dijk leaves late into the window with the club failing to replace him, before either Yoshida or Stephens picks up an injury. Finishing in the bottom-half of the table after four good seasons would be a big blow.

Premier League predictor: Tottenham to win the title?

Show/hide article…

The stats-based Sky Sports Predictor is back for the new season - and it’s tipping Tottenham to win the Premier League title.

Reigning champions Chelsea are set to slip into the runners-up spot ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City, according to the predictive algorithm.

Liverpool would narrowly miss out on Champions League qualification in fifth, while Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United would finish sixth for a second successive season.

The Predictor does not factor transfer activity, with Manchester City poaching Spurs’ right-back Kyle Walker for £50m and spending another £153.8m on additional signings.

In contrast, Tottenham are the only Premier League club not to have signed one player this summer - but the algorithm backs the London club to claim the title on form alone.

At the other end of the table, it’s bad news for Huddersfield in their inaugural Premier League season - with a predicted immediate return to the Championship, joined by Watford and Burnley.

But newly-promoted Newcastle avoid the drop with an impressive 12th-place finish, while Brighton narrowly secure top-flight status.

The Predictor tips Arsenal to beat Leicester on Friday, Liverpool to defeat Watford in the early Saturday kick-off, Spurs to win at Newcastle and Manchester United to beat West Ham on Sunday - with all four games live on Sky Sports Premier League or Sky Sports Main Event.

See the predicted table below and scroll down to see the predicted outcomes of this weekend’s opening games…

Gylfi Sigurdsson not in Swansea squad to face Southampton, says Paul Clement

Show/hide article…

Gylfi Sigurdsson is not in Swansea’s squad to face Southampton, Paul Clement has confirmed, as talks over a move to Everton continue.

Talks between Everton and Swansea over a deal to take Sigurdsson to Goodison Park have hit a deadlock, according to Sky sources, but a deal could still happen.

Clement, who is preparing his side for their first game of the Premier League campaign against Southampton on Saturday, insists no deal has been agreed as of yet but hinted both parties are looking for a speedy resolution.

“No deal been has been done with any club,” Clement said. "Talks are ongoing and I’m speaking to our chairman and owners every day for an update but there isn’t a current conclusion to it at the moment.

"What’s going on is not abnormal; you get a lot of situations like this.

“The situation is our club has a valuation of the player, the other club has another valuation of the player and the two have not met. The objective is that at some point the clubs will meet (in valuation).”

Clement added: "At the moment no (he will not play this Saturday). I think it’s in the best interest with everyone involved that’s not the case, and in my plans that’s the situation that Gylfi will not be involved in the squad this weekend.

“We’ve got a number of weeks to go and I don’t anticipate it going to the end of the window. Of course I would like the situation resolved as soon as possible, I’ve said that quite clearly.”

Despite leaving Sigurdsson out of the squad to face Saints this weekend, Clement was adamant he had no issue with the midfielder’s application at the club.

“I like working with him,” Clement added. “He’s a really good person and player. Every day he comes out and gives his best in training and that hasn’t changed during this period and I don’t see it changing - he’s that kind of boy.”

Clement steered Swansea away from relegation last season after arriving in January and believes the club are in a stronger position heading into his first full campaign in charge.

“I think so because we haven’t seen many outs and we’ve got good additions to the group,” he said. “We’d still like to do a couple of things [in the transfer market], but we have until the end of August to do that.”

Three things Liverpool still need to fix

Show/hide article…

Liverpool supporters would like to see the protracted pursuit of Virgil van Dijk come to a successful end more than anything else. After a long summer of hopes being renewed and then dashed again, to get the signing of the Southampton centre-back over the line would provide welcome relief.

In fairness though, as we outlined earlier this week, there is little that Liverpool can do to force the issue if Southampton are adamant that either a) Van Dijk will not be sold or b) he will not be sold to Liverpool specifically. Even if they relent on the first, they could still refuse to listen to offers from Anfield after the ‘tapping up’ controversy earlier this summer.

Liverpool therefore have not just one but two obstacles to clear before they can be confident of completing a deal for Van Dijk. As it stands, Southampton are adamant he is staying and this saga is likely to run right down to the deadline.

It is not just in central defence that Klopp could do with an extra body. The midfield is light too, particularly after a thigh injury ruled Adam Lallana out for a ‘considerable period of time’, thought to be around two months.

The consequences of failing to bring in RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita are suddenly clear, with Klopp only another injury and suspension away from having the as-yet-untested Marko Grujic starting in the middle of the park. Philippe Coutinho has, of course, appeared in the position recently too and his availability come September is a whole other story.

There has been little indication that Liverpool are considering an alternative to Keita, with the club expected to go back in for the midfielder next summer. Klopp is not the type to bring in a short-term option, after all, but more bad luck with injuries and that could cause a problem.

Ultimately, the overarching issue is depth and it even stretches to parts of the squad that look well-stocked at first glance. Nathaniel Clyne’s current absence is a case in point. Ahead of this weekend’s opener at Watford, Klopp noted that one of three options could fill in: Joe Gomez, Jon Flanagan or Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A natural centre-back recovering from a minor muscle injury and a liked but limited full-back who struggled for minutes at Burnley are not exactly stellar options. It is, instead, likely to be the highly-rated Alexander-Arnold, who is still 18 years-old and a novice at the top level. Even when the cover is there, it is a little thin.

Ben Woodburn is another promising academy youngster whose rise through the ranks has come on merit, but also because of the unavailability of senior players. Liverpool start the season with five games in 15 days, including a hugely important two-legged Champions League play-off. That they may be forced to call on teenagers in the tie is something of a concern.

Merson’s predictions: Wins for Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd

Show/hide article…

The long wait is finally over - Premier League football is back and so too are Paul Merson’s predictions!

12 weeks of twiddling your thumbs and annoying your partner are at an end, and Sky Sports is the place to be as the 2017/18 season kicks off with a bang.

Arsenal and Leicester get the new campaign underway on Friday in the first of four mouth-watering live games across the opening weekend.

Liverpool then travel to Watford on Saturday lunchtime before Newcastle host Tottenham and West Ham travel to Manchester United on Super Sunday.

Ahead of what promises to be a huge weekend of action, the Magic Man offer his predictions…

You’re never too sure what you’re going to get with Arsenal but they looked good against Chelsea in the Community Shield, despite being without Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

Kelechi Iheanacho has come to Leicester for a lot of money and, having predominantly come off the bench at Manchester City, it will be interesting to see if he can have an impact from the start for the Foxes. Whether he does or not, I expect Arsenal to win, but only just.

I cannot see anything but a Liverpool win. I worry for Watford and have predicted them to get relegated - and nothing has changed after the Andre Gray signing.

I fear there may not be space for Troy Deeney at Watford after that signing and that’s a huge worry because he’s by far their best player.

Liverpool have been impressive in pre-season, beating Bayern Munich 3-0, and I expect them to inflict the same score on the Hornets.

Newcastle simply haven’t signed enough players. Rafa Benitez has managed at the top of European football and I’m sure he doesn’t have plans to stay in the Premier League by the skin of his teeth following promotion.

I can see this whole affair at Newcastle coming to an end soon if Rafa continues not to be backed in the transfer market. They haven’t spent enough and if it wasn’t for the fans I’d tip them to go down.

Spurs are as good as anybody in the league and against a Newcastle side, who will have to attack in front of their own fans, this could be a cricket score.

What’s certain is that you can put Romelu Lukaku down for a goal, so United are a goal to the good already!

But despite the new-found goal threat I don’t see United winning the league, they haven’t got enough guile in midfield to pick through teams who will put 10 men behind the ball.

Jose Mourinho has built a team to be big and strong, a team that will blow others away. I see that being successful against West Ham, over a 38-game season though, I’m not so sure.

I had a close eye on Chelsea in the Community Shield and what’s clear is that they aren’t the same team with Eden Hazard.

But Burnley at home on the opening day of the season is a nice game given the Clarets’ poor away record.

The fixture computer has been kind to Palace, and not so to Huddersfield. The Terriers haven’t been handed one of the big boys on the opening day, instead they travel to a Palace side who will be good going forward under their new manager Frank de Boer. I fear Huddersfield will struggle on the opening day.

Everton have signed a lot of players this summer, but not a lot of great players! They’ve bought in players, spent money and they are having a go though, so fair play to them.

If they can get Gylfi Sigurdsson then they will be a certainty for seventh. They are a solid team and should be good for a run in the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup, but I can’t see them breaking into the top six because their squad is not as strong as those above.

Having said that I’m backing them to kick the season off with a win against a Stoke side I fear will struggle having lost Marko Arnautovic to West Ham.

Things will be better for Swansea this season, I don’t see them being caught up in a relegation fight like last term. They’ve obviously got to sort out the Sigurdsson situation because they will need time to replace him, but after that I see Paul Clement pushing the club on.

Saints are in a similar position with Virgil van Dijk - will he or won’t he play? The main players from both teams look like they want to leave so they haven’t been able to settle in the run up the season. I see that having a big say in the outcome of this game.

West Brom are a hard team to beat at home. Bournemouth will have a go, especially with Jermain Defoe in their ranks, but this Baggies team will dominate at set plays. It’s here where I see the game decided, with Bournemouth unable to cope with West Brom’s aerial presence.

This is a nightmare start for Brighton, a nightmare start. I fancy Manchester City to win the league, they look irresistible on the attack and playing against a Brighton side in front of an expectant home crowd, the Seagulls will have to have a go, playing into City’s hands.

Chris Hughton’s men have to fight fire with fire and really test City’s new-look defence to have any chance of getting a result. If they don’t then I can only see one winner.

There’s a massive £1,000,000 up for grabs in the latest edition of Super 6! All you have to do to scoop the prize is predict the scores of five 3pm games in the Premier League and Leeds v Preston in the Sky Bet Championship. It’s free to play so get your entry in before kick-off for the chance to win.
