Saints plotting Euro return

Show/hide article…

Saints are plotting for a return to European football.

Jack Stephens admitted he and his teammates are still frustrated by their failure to make it out of the group stages of the Europa League last season.

Stephens believes it has added extra motivation for the squad to battle their way back into Europe via the Premier League in the upcoming season, which begins at home to Swansea on Saturday.

He said: “Of course it’s hard because there are so many big clubs in this division and they are spending an awful lot of money.

“It’s always going to be difficult for us, but we feel confident we can beat any team on any given day, so it’s just about getting the consistency right.

“I think if we can do that there is no reason we can’t finish in those European places.

“We tasted it last year and we were disappointed to go out in the group stage.

“It would be nice to get back in it and try and get a bit further.”

Stephens is hoping to back up his breakthrough season last time out by establishing himself as first team regular for the entirety of the upcoming campaign.

The 23-year-old took his chance with both hands after the sale of Jose Fonte and the injury to Virgil van Dijk, and is set to be handed the chance to start this new season under Mauricio Pellegrino.

“I think for me I just want to carry on where I left off last season and cement my place in the team, and help the team get as many points as possible,” admitted Stephens, who says he senses increased confidence in the side after signing off pre-season with a 2-0 win over Sevilla.

“We feel good. It was nice to finish off with a win after the Wednesday night and we feel we are in a good place and ready to start the season.”

The change of manager means somebody new to impress for Stephens, but Pellegrino’s extensive experience as a centre half will surely only help his development further.

“He is very herlpful towards all the players, and has a lot of individual chats,” said Stephens.

“As a central defender it’s nice to be able to speak to someone who has played for so long in that position. It’s always going to beneficial for me.

“He’s come in and brought in a fresh approach and the players seem to have reacted really well.

“We have had a good pre-season and we are ready to go.”

The Inside Track: Swansea City

Show/hide article…

What have the changes been at Swansea City this summer?

Head coach Paul Clement has had his first pre-season at the helm and is starting to mould together the squad he wants to take forward.

The likes of Borja Baston, Bafetimbi Gomis and Jordi Amat have been let go, and the exciting Tammy Abraham and Roque Mesa have been among the arrivals.

There could well be more changes to come, but those look likely to have to wait until there is some sort of resolution with regards to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s future.

The Iceland international has been a key figure for Swansea, if he is to leave then bringing in high-calibre players to help replace him will be a must.

How has pre-season gone for the team?

It’s been pretty solid and steady. Swansea were beaten at Barnet in their first pre-season fixture, but have won three and drawn two since, including a 4-0 win over Sampdoria.

A 10-day trip to the United States gave Clement and his staff plenty of opportunity to get plenty of work into the players and the squad seem to have relished the experience, praising the clarity shown by their coaches.

Clement felt his players had been a little behind where he would ideally have liked, but felt there had been a step forward against Sampdoria so they look to be in decent shape.

What have you made of the business Swansea have done in the transfer market?

They have moved on players that needed to be moved on and Abraham and Mesa look to be quality additions to the squad, the on-loan Chelsea striker has looked particularly sharp since joining up with his new team-mates.

It might take them a little bit of time to fully adjust to the Premier League but the initial signs are encouraging.

More additions are expected before the end of the window, but the ongoing Sigurdsson saga means some of those moves are still pending.

How do you expect the team to operate?

Swansea finished last season playing with a midfield diamond, and it proved highly successful as they escaped the drop.

They won four and drew one of their final five games using the system, and it has been regularly used during pre-season.

It gives Clement the protection for the back four he likes to have, while also allowing his front three the freedom to interchange and spread defences.

The big question is likely to be who plays in the number 10 role, with Wayne Routledge appearing the most likely candidate after an intelligent outing against Sampdoria. Abraham will start up front with Fernando Llorente injured.

Who do you think will prove to be key for Swansea this season?

While Llorente and Sigurdsson stole the headlines last season, the role of Alfie Mawson and Federico Fernandez in Swansea’s survival should not be overlooked.

When the pair played together for the first time in January, Swansea had the worst defensive record in the league and a goal difference of minus 23.

Come the end of the season they had kept a number of clean sheets and the goal difference was only marginally worse than it had been in January (-25).

Additionally, skipper Leon Britton remains a vital figure on and off the field.

What do you feel the fans expectations are for the campaign?

I think most Swansea fans would be happy to see a comfortable mid-table finish without any major concerns over relegation. The Swans have spent the last two seasons battling the drop, if you flirt with it too often the consequences can be dire and Paul Clement’s men will want to avoid that by making a good start to the campaign.

The ongoing uncertainty over Sigurdsson is a concern, and further additions are needed, but Clement worked wonders at the end of last season and if Swansea can get good business done between now and the end of August there is no reason a better season should not lie ahead.

Southampton Cup: Day Four

Show/hide article…

Pace Pumas and Queens Park Rangers were competing in the first semi-final and both teams gave it their all.

Despite many chances for Pace, the match finished 0-0 in normal time and penalties determined the winner.

QPR held their nerve to progress into the final thanks a 2-0 success in the penalty shootout.

In the other semi-final, Champion Sport Group lost narrowly 1-0 to Football Training Centre thanks to a long-range strike midway through the game.

Despite Football Training Centre not conceding one goal on their way to the final, they were undone by a good performance from the Rangers and lost a tightly-contested clash 2-1.

In the under-14s, Kenya ran out 1-0 winners in their final group match against the Isle of Man.

After conceding in the opening minutes, the Isle of Man were unable to break down a resolute Kenyan defence, with the side’s finishing third and fourth respectively.

Good luck on your Liverpool move! Le Tissier jokes over new Southampton signing on Twitter

Show/hide article…

The Gabonese player moved from Juventus in a club record £18m deal this week.

Signed on a five-year-deal, the central midfielder is a statement of intent from new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Video of him in action for the Old Lady shows why he was willing to break the bank for the 23-year-old.

Strong and powerful, he can break up play before starting driving runs to launch counter attacks in a similar mould to Chelsea star Ngolo Kante.

Saints seal Lemina deal

Show/hide article…

The 23-year-old today completed his switch from the Italian side and has joined the club on a five-year contract.

A senior international with Gabon, Lemina started his career in France, with Lorient, before joining Marseille in 2013 and then moving to Juventus in 2015, initially on loan, before completing a permanent transfer last summer.

In his time with the Bianconeri, he won both the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia twice, and featured in last season’s Champions League final, against Real Madrid.

Vice Chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “Mario is an outstanding talent who has already achieved a great deal in his career, winning a number of titles and gaining experience of playing on some of the biggest stages in world football.

“Investing in a player of Mario’s quality and buying from a club like Juventus is a significant statement of intent from the club, and this is a purchase that has set another club-record fee.

“Mario still has his best years ahead of him, and we believe that he will not only be an excellent acquisition for us in the immediate future, but that he will also be able to realise even more of his potential here in the years to come.

“In a volatile market with some extraordinary and inexplicable transfers taking place, we are determined to go about our work in a diligent and correct way. This is a player who has won trophies and played in the Champions League final less than three months ago and he has signed for Saints amid a host of suitors.

“Mario will complement what is already an extremely strong group of midfield players in our squad, and we are excited about what he will bring to the group.”

Commenting on his move, Mario Lemina said: “I am really happy to have signed for Southampton. I think that it was the project that attracted me the most and the one my family was really behind. I am really happy to be here.”

Maya Yoshida pays tribute to victims of Nagasaki atomic bombing as US and North Korea tensions mount

Show/hide article…

On the 72nd anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bombing Southampton defender and Japan international Maya Yoshida has paid tribute to the thousands of lives lost in the immediate and subsequent aftermath of the blast.

At least 80,000 people were killed after the US dropped a second atomic bomb on Japan in a bid to bring the Pacific War to an end – just three days after the Hiroshima bombing in which between 90,000 and 146,000 nationals were killed.

Japan later announced its surrender to the Allies on August 15, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki and the Soviet Union’s declaration of war.

With tensions rising between America and North Korea, after a series of threats were issued by US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, leader of the rogue state, fears have mounted of a third nuclear war.

In the wake of such escalation, Yoshida took to social media yesterday to pay his respects to the victims of the Nagasaki atomic bombing, 72 years on from the event, and urge against future conflict.

“Look at their bright eyes,” he said on Twitter, with a photo of himself and two Southampton mascots. “I’d like them to live in peaceful world without any conflict. Today is 72nd Atomic bomb Memorial Day in Nagasaki.”

Southampton’s Nathan Redmond, Manolo Gabbiadini and co sell Big Issues

Show/hide article…

Four Southampton players have taken to Winchester town centre to join Big Issue vendors in selling a special edition of the famous street newspaper.

Nathan Redmond, Manolo Gabbiadini, Oriol Romeu and Florin Gardos hit the streets on Tuesday to help shift copies of a unique Southampton-themed edition of the Big Issue.

Despite the rainy weather in Winchester, the Southampton stars looked in good spirits as they donned Big Issue vests and tried their hand at selling the magazine - which is traditionally sold by homeless people.

All four players posed for photos with regular Big Issue sellers and Redmond was seen deep in conversation with one particular vendor in a video posted to Southampton’s official Twitter account.

The special edition of Big Issue features Southampton defender Jack Stephens on the cover and will be handed out with the matchday programme for Saints first game of the season - at home to Swansea on Saturday.

‘I could see how hard these guys have to work, they’re out in all weather’, Redmond told Southampton’s official website: ‘It’s not easy and I have huge respect for them’.

Southampton are launching a new partnership with Big Issue magazine which will give Big Issue vendors the chance to enroll in an eight-week employability programme.

The Swansea match on Saturday will be new Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino’s first Premier League match in charge.

Southampton broke their transfer record with the £18million signing of Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemima from Juventus on Tuesday.

The Saints have also signed Poland Under-21 defender Jan Bednarek this summer but they face a battle to keep centre back Virgil van Dijk after he submitted a transfer request on Monday.
