‘Frustrated… Insulted… No alternative’ - Van Dijk’s full statement

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is understood to have handed in a transfer request at Saints. Below is his statement in full:

“It is with regret that I can confirm that I have today handed in a transfer request to leave Southampton football club.

“Unfortunately I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the club’s intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to 2 weeks wages.

“I will be appealing what I feel to be an unjustified sanction and their inability to follow the correct disciplinary protocol in due course.

“Over the past six months I have held numerous discussions with representatives of the board, the former manager Claude Puel as well as the new manager Mauricio Pellegrino to inform them all of my desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge.

“I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer. I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and as such I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist.

“I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.”

He continued: “The period of time that I have just spent injured and unable to play has put a number of things into perspective and made me realise just how important it is to take major opportunities should they arise.

“I have consistently relayed my feelings to senior management at Southampton in what I believed to be private and personal conversations. Disappointingly, these conversations have regularly found their way into the media.

“I would also like to make clear that I have never once refused to train. I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances.

“Following this conversation the manager explained that he only wanted players who he felt were 100% committed to Southampton and told me I would therefore have to train away from the first team.

“As a proud professional I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events.

“I had very much hoped to retain the good relationship I’ve always enjoyed with everyone at the club, especially the fans, but unfortunately in light of everything that’s happened this has now been seriously affected.

“I would like to make clear that I have nothing but gratitude to everyone at Southampton for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

“However, the time for me to move on is now and I hope to be able to work with the club to find the best resolution to suit all parties.”

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has handed in a transfer request, claiming he was left with “no alternative”.

The Dutch international, who released a statement, wants a move to a bigger club, and is eager to leave St Mary’s immediately.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte hoping to strengthen defence with PSG’s Serge Aurier and is poised to bid for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte has been reassured that Chelsea will sign at least three more new players to add to his squad by the end of the transfer window with the club ready to rival Manchester United for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier and step up their interest in Virgil van Dijk.

Head coach Conte ideally wants two new wing-backs to provide competition and cover for Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso, and has turned to £27m-rated Aurier, who is also wanted by United, after missing out on Danilo.

Van Dijk was identified as Conte’s top central defensive target at the end of last season and Chelsea were confident of landing the Dutchman from Southampton before he looked set to move to Liverpool.

Liverpool were forced to back away from Van Dijk following accusations they spoke to the player without Southampton’s permission, but Chelsea have retained an interest ever since.

Van Dijk’s dramatic transfer request is likely to prompt a firm enquiry from Chelsea, who will hope that the row between Liverpool and Southampton will hand them an advantage – even if the Jurgen Klopp renews his interest.

Arsenal will not join Liverpool and Chelsea in Virgil van Dijk race: Thomas Lemar priority

Show/hide article…

That’s despite the Southampton defender handing in a transfer request as he looks for a switch to a major club.

Arsenal have monitored Van Dijk since he was at Celtic but have no interest in getting into a bidding war with their rivals.

And Football London say all resources are being focused on signing Thomas Lemar from Monaco.

Barcelona’s interest in the France international is complicating matters as they can now afford him after the £200m sale of Neymar to Paris St-Germain.

Arsene Wenger is also looking to bring Jean-Michael Seri to the club from Nice.

Liverpool set to reignite £60m pursuit of Virgil van Dijk following transfer request

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk has accused Southampton of leaking his private conversations and of spreading false reports he has refused to train in order to force a move away. He says he was “insulted” by those claims and decided to go public after learning he was being fined two weeks wages for an alleged disciplinary breach. The Netherlands defender, 26, says he has to leave St Mary’s in order to play European football, although Southampton are determined to keep him until at least next summer. Liverpool are the favourites to buy Van Dijk despite seeing a £60m move for the defender collapse embarrassingly in June. The Dutchman looked all set for a move to Anfield, only for the Reds to pull out of a deal and issue a public apology after Southampton demanded an investigation into suspected tapping up. Liverpool escaped Premier League sanctions as the Saints were happy with the apology they got.

“I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed” But he still wants to move to Anfield, having also been linked with Chelsea, who are now focusing their efforts on signing Serge Aurier from Paris St-Germain. Van Dijk became the highest-paid player in Southampton’s history when he signed a six-year contract in May 2016 but sacked his agent just days later. The former Celtic centre-back was left out of the Saints’ pre-season tour of France because, according to manager Mauricio Pellegrino, he was not in the right frame of mind to play. In a lengthy statement, the defender said: “Over the past six months, I have held numerous discussions with representatives of the board, the former manager Claude Puel as well as the new manager Mauricio Pellegrino to inform them all of my desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge. “I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed. “I have consistently relayed my feelings to senior management at Southampton in what I believed to be private and personal conversations. Disappointingly, these conversations have regularly found their way into the media.”

Pellegrino ordered Van Dijk to train away from the rest of the squad last month after declaring that the defender was not in a fit psychological state to play. But Van Dijk has responded angrily to suggestions that he refused to train. He said: “I would also like to make clear that I have never once refused to train. I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances. “Following this conversation, the manager explained that he only wanted players who he felt were 100 per cent committed to Southampton and told me I would therefore have to train away from the first team. “As a proud professional I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events. “I had very much hoped to retain the good relationship I’ve always enjoyed with everyone at the club, especially the fans, but unfortunately in light of everything that’s happened this has now been seriously affected.” But Southampton were standing firm last night and a club source said: “Virgil asking for a transfer does not come as a surprise as we were expecting it. “It doesn’t change anything. We do not want or need to sell him.”

Virgil van Dijk certain to leave Southampton this summer, says Jamie Redknapp

Show/hide article…

Jamie Redknapp believes Virgil van Dijk is “certain to leave” Southampton this summer after handing in a transfer request on Monday.

Speaking on The Debate - Live, a new nightly show on Sky Sports Premier League, Redknapp said it is in Southampton’s best interest to resolve the issue quickly.

The Netherlands international was a target for Liverpool before they were forced to drop their interest after Saints reported them to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Chelsea are also interested in the defender but Southampton do not want to sell and Sky sources understand that stance is unlikely to change despite Monday’s transfer request.

But Redknapp believes Van Dijk is only showing ambition by attempting to move on from St Mary’s.

“He goes, it’s an absolute certainty,” Redknapp told The Debate - Live. "He won’t play for Southampton again.

"He has put in a transfer request and I think that probably suits Southampton. Let’s be honest, I was there for a short time, Southampton are a selling club. If you have any ambition to be a top player you leave Southampton.

"Victor Wanyama, Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, everybody else has gone. They paid £13m to Celtic for Van Dijk and they will get close to £60m, they will get a fortune for him.

"I don’t blame Virgil one bit. This is what happens in football. He will already know how much he could get at Liverpool, how much he could get at Chelsea, this is what happens in football.

"He has probably already spoken to the managers. He could probably earn three or four times his Southampton money at Liverpool or Chelsea, so why wouldn’t you want to go and play for a better club?

"I’m sure Southampton fans will say, ‘That’s out of order’, but if anyone received an offer to go to a better job, you take it. You’re ambitious.

"Southampton cannot really complain. They have always sold their best players and now they are about to sell another one. They should be happy they can reinvest or bring another player through the academy.

"The last thing you want is a rotten apple in the dressing room, especially with a new manager. He does not want Van Dijk causing problems.

"Pellegrino wants to know who’s on board and who wants to play for him so the quicker they resolve this issue, the quicker they can get a couple of players in.

“I don’t see any way Virgil van Dijk is a Southampton player once this window closes.”

Redknapp, who was joined on The Debate - Live by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, believes Van Dijk is more likely to join Liverpool than Chelsea.

When asked to choose between the two clubs, Redknapp said: "It’s a difficult one. There’s the pull of London, for a lot of players that’s a big thing.

"But from what I hear Jurgen Klopp is a really big pull for him. He wants to play for Klopp and Liverpool need a centre-back desperately. Chelsea’s need is not as strong and I think he will go to Liverpool.

“But I’m also surprised Manchester City have not gone for him. They must really feel Vincent Kompany can last the season.”

Carragher added: "Chelsea have been a lot more successful than Liverpool over the last 10 years. They are the champions and as Jamie [Redknapp] mentioned there’s London, that’s a pull.

"At the moment Chelsea are a better team than Liverpool. But if I was him I would look at the way Chelsea play with that back three. You would have Van Dijk as the middle man but David Luiz was so good there last season as that big, powerful, dominant centre-back.

“I can’t see either of them playing as the wide centre-back. At Liverpool, you could go there and be the man that takes them to winning trophies.”

Chelsea line up £87m pair to boost defence

Show/hide article…

Chelsea have a fight on their hands days away from beginning their Premier League title defence as Antonio Conte shows signs of discontent about the state of his squad.

Desperate for reinforcements, the Italian has made his feelings patently clear after defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

And they could be coming soon in the form of Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier and Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk, according to the Telegraph.

The Blues could move for the Dutch centre-back after his public plea for Saints to consider bids for him.

The Ivorian right-back, worth £27m, is wanted by Manchester United too.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will refuse to sanction any deal allowing Phillippe Coutinho to replace Neymar at Barcelona. It shatters claims that there is a price at which the Reds are ready to do business this month.

Tottenham are facing a fresh fight to hang on to left-back Danny Rose. The 27-year-old England international’s ongoing knee-injury recovery appeared to have put paid to any chance of him moving in this window. But Manchester United and Inter Milan have reignited their interest in Rose, and Spurs are braced for approaches.

Arsenal defender Gabriel is a target for Valencia. The Brazilian moved to the Emirates in January 2015 for £11.3million but Arsene Wenger has a number of defensive options going into the new season. Valencia want a new centre-half following the departure of Eliaquim Mangala, who has returned to Manchester City following a loan spell in Spain.

Swansea are targeting Arsenal full-back Carl Jenkinson. The 25-year-old is one of a clutch of Gunners available for transfer as boss Arsene Wenger plans a pre-deadline clearout.

Southampton have entered the hunt to take Patrick Roberts on loan from Manchester City. The south coast club are battling French outfit Nice and Celtic to land tricky winger Roberts for the season.

Spurs striker Vincent Janssen is a target for French side Marseille. The £17million Dutchman scored just six goals last season - two in the Premier League - following his move from AZ Alkmaar.

David Wagner wants Dimitri Cavare as promoted Huddersfield’s TENTH signing of the summer. The Premier League new boys are closing in on a £1.8million deal for the 22-year-old Rennes right-back as a replacement for Martin Cranie, who is out for two months with a hip injury.

Boss Simon Grayson has warned Lamine Kone and Wahbi Khazri to “do the right things” if they are to earn moves away from Championship Sunderland. Ivory Coast’s Kone and Tunisian Khazri have been tipped to follow Jeremain Lens out of the Black Cats.
