Championship loan watch: Which Premier League youngsters impressed on opening weekend?

Show/hide article…

The opening weekend of the Sky Bet Championship season saw a host of youngsters catch the eye following summer loan moves from the Premier League.

We take a closer look at how five of them got on…

Youngsters going on loan to the Championship from Chelsea has become a regular theme in recent seasons, and Aina is one of several Blues in the second tier this season.

The 20-year-old had made just five first-team appearances before starting against Aston Villa and he slightly looked nervy in the early stages in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Saturday. However, he swiftly improved as Hull got a grip on the game in the second half and should prove a handy addition in their attempts to return straight back to the Premier League this season.

A loan move to West Brom in the Premier League last season didn’t work out for Galloway at all as he managed just five appearances in all competitions, and the 21-year-old will be hoping for significantly more game time at Sunderland this season.

While not entirely responsible for Derby’s opening goal at the Stadium of Light on Friday night, he should have done a lot better to stop Johnny Russell in the build-up to it and will have to learn to improve in those situations.

A midfielder previously tipped for big things at Southampton, Reed made the switch to Norwich in search of first-team football after failing to break into the first-team at St Mary’s.

Fulham’s midfield were, unsurprisingly, a far more cohesive unit at Craven Cottage on Saturday and Reed and Co struggled at times to contain the likes of Tom Cairney and Oliver Norwood, but he should prove a key addition as the season rolls on and the Canaries get used to life under new boss Daniel Farke.

The West Ham youngster had an impressive season on loan at Bradford in Sky Bet League One last season and acquitted himself well to life in the second tier on Sunday - despite Bolton’s 3-2 home defeat against Leeds.

Bolton were overrun at times, particularly in the first half where Leeds scored all three of their goals, but exerted himself very well in the second and could make a big impact at this level.

Another Chelsea youngster in the Championship, Blackman spent last season on loan in League Two at Wycombe and was drafted in a couple of weeks ago to replace Sheffield United’s injured first-choice goalkeeper Simon Moore.

The young goalkeeper made a terrific start to life, keeping a clean sheet as the League One champions got off to a winning start against Brentford, with a late stop against Neal Maupay a particular highlight to preserve their 1-0 advantage.

Premier League club bidding to usurp Celtic and Nice to Man City starlet

Show/hide article…

Southampton have entered the hunt to take Patrick Roberts on loan from Manchester City.

The south coast club are battling French outfit Nice and Celtic to land tricky winger Roberts for the season.

Roberts completed his 18-month loan stint at Celtic last season, helping them win a domestic treble last season scoring 11 times in 47 appearances.

City are willing to loan the 20 year-old out again to continue his development and he is not short of options.

Mirror Sport understands Roberts is open to a move to Nice but a shot at Premier League football with Southampton could prove too to turn down.

Celtic are also keen to have him back. Brendan Rodgers’ No.2 Chris Davies said: "The situation between Pat and Man City will be between him and the club.

"All I know is we value and rate the player and I am sure that if is right for everybody then something will be done, but we can’t really control that at the moment.

“We just focus on our work here and see how that evolves.”

Eden Hazard is ready to push through a move from Chelsea to Real Madrid this summer.

Spanish outlet Don Balon say the Belgian ace dreams of playing for the Spanish giants.

Real are looking for a new forward amid speculation Manchester United target Gareth Bale could be sold due to his injury problems.

Virgil van Dijk breaks silence over Southampton exile

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has handed in a transfer request and declared he feels "insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train.”

The Dutch international wants a move to a bigger club, and is eager to move immediately.

A host of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, have been monitoring his situation.

But it is understood that the ex-Celtic centre-half still has his heart set on a move to Liverpool.

Van Dijk was left out of the pre-season tour of France, when Mauricio Pellegrino said he was in not the right state of mind to play.

And Pellegrino also stated that he was training alone after refusing to play - something Van Dijk vehemently denies. He believes he has been hung out to dry by the club.

Therefore, Van Dijk’s management company, on the defender’s behalf, have released the following statement:

"Unfortunately I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the Club’s intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to 2 weeks wages. I will be appealing what I feel to be an unjustified sanction and their inability to follow the correct disciplinary protocol in due course.

"Over the past six months I have held numerous discussions with representatives of the board, the former manager Claude Puel as well as the new manager Mauricio Pellegrino to inform them all of my desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge.

"I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer. I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and as such I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist.

"I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.

"The period of time that I have just spent injured and unable to play has put a number of things into perspective and made me realise just how important it is to take major opportunities should they arise.

"I have consistently relayed my feelings to senior management at Southampton in what I believed to be private and personal conversations. Disappointingly, these conversations have regularly found their way into the media.

"I would also like to make clear that I have never once refused to train. I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances.

"Following this conversation the manager explained that he only wanted players who he felt were 100 per cent committed to Southampton and told me I would therefore have to train away from the first team.

"As a proud professional I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events.

"I had very much hoped to retain the good relationship I’ve always enjoyed with everyone at the club, especially the fans, but unfortunately in light of everything that’s happened this has now been seriously affected.

"I would like to make clear that I have nothing but gratitude to everyone at Southampton for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

“However, the time for me to move on is now and I hope to be able to work with the club to find the best resolution to suit all parties.”

Executive director Les Reed was determined not to sell to Liverpool, who were forced into an apology earlier in the summer.

But now he may have little option, with new boss Pellegrino growing increasingly frustrated at the situation.

Liverpool are willing to pay £60million for Van Dijk - making him the world’s most expensive defender - despite Jurgen Klopp’s declaration that he’s happy with his centre-half options.

Van Dijk signed a contract last year that does not expire until 2023. When asked about the player’s future on Thursday, Pellegrino stated: "The situation is the boy is aside of the team because he doesn’t want to play for us.

“I would like to persuade him that he’s important for us and the club will not sell him.”

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk submits transfer request

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk has been targeted by Liverpool since the start of the summer transfer window as they look to improve their defence.

Sportsmail understands the Dutch defender decided to move to Merseyside after being wooed by manager Jurgen Klopp’s vision for the future.

But Southampton’s decision to report Liverpool for allegedly tapping up Van Dijk meant the Anfield club had to publicly declare they were dropping their interest in him.

The 25-year-old was made to train away from the first team while Southampton insisted they would not sell him.

Van Dijk has now decided to force the matter by handing in a formal transfer request as he looks to push through a move away from St. Mary’s.

A statement released by his management company read: 'It is with regret that I can confirm that I have today handed in a transfer request to leave Southampton Football Club.

'Unfortunately I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the club’s intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to 2 weeks wages. Virgil van Dijk: Southampton defender hands in transfer request

Show/hide article…

Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk has handed in a transfer request and says he is “insulted” at suggestions he refused to train.

The Netherlands centre-back, 26, is wanted by a number of clubs and had said he wanted to move to Liverpool.

In July, Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino said that he ordered the Dutchman to train alone.

“I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist,” Van Dijk said.

"I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.

"I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer.

"I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances.

“As a proud professional I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events.”

Van Dijk said he handed in the request after claiming Southampton were about to fine him two weeks wages.

“I had very much hoped to retain the good relationship I’ve always enjoyed with everyone at the club, especially the fans, but unfortunately in light of everything that’s happened this has now been seriously affected.”

The former Celtic player has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer as well as attracting interest from Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester City.

However the Anfield club said they ended their interest in June after Saints said they were going to report them to the Premier League for making an alleged illegal approach.

And at the weekend Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said he was happy with his centre-back options.

“We have four. I don’t think we need more. In the moment I’m fine,” said the German. “We are open until 31 August. We cannot force things and we would never get a centre-back ‘just because.’”

The Saints have said in the past that they will not sell Van Dijk.

He signed a new six-year contract in May 2016, having joined Southampton for £13m from Celtic in September 2015.

Van Dijk missed the final five months of the 2016-17 season after picking up an ankle injury following a challenge by Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy in Southampton’s 3-0 win at St Mary’s on 22 January.

It forced him to miss the EFL Cup final loss to Manchester United at Wembley.

Virgil van Dijk hands in transfer request in bid to force Liverpool move

Show/hide article…

Liverpool transfer target Virgil van Dijk has handed in a transfer request to try and force a move away from Southampton, having been “insulted” by the club’s treatment of him and the prospect of a two-week fine.

Southampton have dug their heels in over the prospect of the 26-year-old Van Dijk leaving, despite Liverpool showing intense interest in the defender along with reigning Premier League champions Chelsea.

After being exiled from the first-team squad during pre-season training, Van Dijk said that he was shocked to learn of the club’s plans to sanction him over the dispute, and the Dutchman issued a statement to confirm that he has handed in an official transfer request in the hope of convincing the Saints hierarchy to start considering offers that come in for him.

“It is with regret that I can confirm that I have today handed in a transfer request to leave Southampton Football Club,” Van Dijk said on Monday.

“Unfortunately I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the club’s intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to two weeks’ wages. I will be appealing what I feel to be an unjustified sanction and their inability to follow the correct disciplinary protocol in due course.

Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk hands in transfer request and says he feels ‘insulted’ amid interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s in-demand centre-back Virgil van Dijk has handed in a transfer request, his management company has announced in a statement.

The Dutch international has declared that he feels "insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train.”

The former Celtic defender has interested a host of clubs and was believed to prefer a move to Liverpool earlier this summer.

However, Southampton subsequently complained about the Reds’ attempts to convince Van Dijk to join them and the Merseyside club soon issued a public apology and declared they were no longer pursuing the player.

A number of other Premier League clubs are interested in the 26-year-old, such as Chelsea and Manchester City, and Van Dijk’s transfer request is the latest act that looks set to end in a move away from St Mary’s before the window closes.

New Saints manager Mauricio Pelligrino left the player out of the pre-season tour to France, saying he was not in the right frame of mind to play, but Van Dijk has taken issue with club’s stance.

"Unfortunately I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the club’s intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to 2 weeks wages,” said the statement issued through the Dutch player’s management company.

“I will be appealing what I feel to be an unjustified sanction and their inability to follow the correct disciplinary protocol in due course.
