Arsenal should have signed Nemanja Matic and should swoop for Virgil van Dijk - Ian Wright

Show/hide article…

That’s the opinion of Gunners hero Ian Wright who believes Arsene Wenger missed a trick by not convincing the Chelsea man to stay in London and make the switch to the Emirates.

And after Van Dijk handed a transfer request into Southampton today, the former England striker wants Arsenal to try and sign the centre-back.

“We haven’t signed the players that people are constantly talking about that was going to lead Arsenal,” Wright said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"At some stage during the season they are going to need those players and that is where the test is going to come.

"Now we’ve got Leicester, Stoke, Liverpool to start (the season). The pre-season hasn’t gone fantastically.

Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool from Southampton this summer - Stuart Pearce

Show/hide article…

Southampton star Virgil van Dijk has been linked with a move to Liverpool

The Holland international is keen to leave Saints before the transfer window shuts and has been training on his own during pre-season.

The Reds were poised to sign the centre-back earlier in the summer but were reported to the Premier League by Southampton for what they regarded as an illegal approach.

Jurgen Klopp’s side released a statement apologising and said they had ended their interest in Van Dijk.

But rumours persist and ex-England international Pearce believes the Dutchman will end up at Anfield and improve Klopp’s defence.

“It will certainly help it,” Pearce said on Sky Sports News.

"I thought the goalkeeping situation could have been improved.

Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool, he wants to work with Jurgen Klopp - Jamie Redknapp

Jamie Redknapp says Virgil van Dijk will join Liverpool this summer

That’s the view of former Reds star Jamie Redknapp.

The Southampton centre-half today handed in a transfer request in hope of forcing a move away from St Mary’s.

Liverpool and Chelsea have been credited with interest in the Dutch defender, 26.

And Redknapp reckons Van Dijk will end up at Anfield this summer, with the former Celtic star keen to work with Jurgen Klopp.

“Virgil van Dijk is a certainty to go, there is no chance he will play for Southampton again. They will get a fortune for him,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

COMMENT: Saints running out of options with van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable statement has thrown some clarity onto matters, but leaves Saints with a very stark choice to make.

There is surely no way back for him now at St Mary’s.

The chance of any reintegration is gone. If his desire all along has been to make his position untenable – something which the statement appears to try and dispute – then it has been achieved.

Leaving aside for one moment the rights and wrongs of the situation, it has to be game over for van Dijk now at Saints.

At least the Dutchman has done the correct thing at this juncture.

Handing in a formal transfer request, forgoing no doubts millions if a deal is to be struck, at least underlines his desire to move.

It leaves things somewhat clearer, as there can now only be two outcomes.

Either Saints stand firm and effectively have a player that they surely will not be able to field again, thus relegating him to spending at least until January training alone, or they sell.

Saints might get a hearty round of applause from the footballing world were they to take a principled stance and the former approach.

However, this is a business, and the business reality is that he needs to be moved on quickly.

Saints have fought for him but this has surely gone too far now.

Mauricio Pellegrino deserves to be able to plan for the future, and that means forgetting players who won’t figure and bringing in ones who will.

For Saints, it is now vital they stand their ground on the fee.

Liverpool or any other interested club may look to use the fact that they figure Saints now need to sell to try and get force them into a cheaper deal than they want. That is tough, but it is negotiations and the opposition will always try and seize on any perceived weakness.

You sense this saga is still far from a conclusion, but at least we know there is no way back for van Dijk now.

Premier League table after five games predicted, based on average top-flight starts

Show/hide article…

The 2017/18 Premier League season kicks off on Friday - but which team typically has the strongest start?

Reigning champions Chelsea may have lost the Community Shield to Arsenal on Sunday - but the Blues tend to burst from the blocks faster than any other Premier League club.

Since the millennium, Chelsea have averaged in fourth spot after five games, ahead of Arsenal (4.11), Manchester United (5.24), Manchester City (6.25), Leeds (6.75), Liverpool (8.12), Leicester (8.50) and Tottenham (8.71).

Arsenal are famed for losing opening day fixtures before hitting early purple patches, and that spike in form typically occurs early for Arsene Wenger’s side.

On average, the Gunners have scored 11 goals at matchday five and also have the greatest goal difference with +6, more than any club to have played in the top flight since the turn of the century.

In contrast, Bournemouth have conceded the highest number of goals of current top-flight teams, leaking nine with a -5 goal difference, followed by Crystal Palace (conceding eight and a -2 goal difference).

Only seven teams have achieved a perfect 15 points from five games during the period: Manchester City (2016/17 and 2015/16), Manchester United (2011/12), Chelsea (2010/11, 2009/10 and 2005/06) and Arsenal (2004/05).

Of those, only Chelsea proceeded to become Premier League champions in 2005/06 and 2009/10, suggesting the title is more likely to be lost than won during the first five games.

However, Manchester United are the only title-winning side to be winless until the third or fourth game of a Premier League season, in 1992/93 and 2007/08 (both four games) and 1998/99 (three games).

Since the millennium, Portsmouth registered the joint-fewest points at week five in 2009/10 when they sat bottom of the table with five defeats, having nine points deducted for entering administration later in the season.

Sunderland, who were relegated from the top flight last term, lost every game after five matchdays in 2005/06.

The Black Cats also only registered one point after five games in 2013/14 and last season, as did West Ham (2002/03 and 2010/11), Middlesbrough (2003/04), Wolves (2003/04), Crystal Palace (2004/05), Derby (2007/08) and Stoke (2016/17).

Here is what the average Premier League table would look like in September, based on teams’ results during the first five Premier League games since 2000, excluding newly-promoted Brighton and Huddersfield who will both play their first-ever Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Alvaro Morata and Paul Pogba make Matt Le Tissier’s Fantasy Football XI

Show/hide article…

Matt Le Tissier has provided us with his Sky Sports Fantasy Football team for the season, backing Alvaro Morata to shine in his debut Premier League campaign.

The Spaniard, who has big boots to fill in replacing Diego Costa as Chelsea’s main striker, missed a penalty in Sunday’s Community Shield shoot-out with Arsenal after starting from the bench.

Le Tissier is also expecting the world’s most expensive defender Benjamin Mendy to settle in at Manchester City, while backing Paul Pogba and Vincent Kompany to enjoy big campaigns and, unsurprisingly, selecting four Southampton players.

Here is Le Tiss’ line-up in full…

Tottenham conceded the least goals in the Premier League last season and a lot of that was down to having a world-class goalkeeper, who you can always rely on to be alert.

Southampton actually recorded 14 clean sheets last season, the same as Manchester United and Arsenal, so if Cedric Soares can contribute a bit more going forward then he’s a bargain buy.

I’m obviously hopeful that Virgil van Dijk will stay but if he’s not ready to start the season then we have a very capable understudy in Jack Stephens, who is even cheaper than Soares.

Pretty much everybody is making Manchester City the favourites for the title but it could all come down to whether Vincent Kompany stays fit. He could strike up a fantastic partnership with John Stones and as long as he’s fit then he’ll be in my side.

He’s a bit cheaper than the other Manchester City defenders but seems to be the one assured of a starting berth given they haven’t signed another left-back - yet that is!

He’s still young and scored seven times last season so if he can add some more assists then he’ll be a real asset, both to Southampton’s team and mine.

After signing Nemanja Matic I’m excited to see how Paul Pogba does with a bit more freedom to operate in a more advanced position. I’d like to see him take games by the scruff of the neck and show everybody why he’s worth the £89m paid for him.

He’s a goals and assists machine and should get even more points playing for Everton, if Ronald Koeman can get the team to gel.

Despite playing less minutes, he scored the same amount of goals and had more assists than David Silva last season and costs significantly less.

He’s one of the players I’m looking forward to seeing in the Premier League this season. He scored prolifically for Real Madrid and will have the team set-up to create chances at Chelsea.

His season was interrupted by injury and it will be interesting to see him with a pre-season under his belt and linking up with Charlie Austin. I think Mauricio Pellegrino will try to get both in the team somehow.

Who will make your team? Draft your side, create and league and invite your mates to play for free here.

Football transfer news and rumours: ‘Liverpool to relaunch £60m move for Virgil van Dijk’

Show/hide article…

After Virgil van Dijk handed in a stunning, forthright transfer request on Monday, asking that Southampton “consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist,” Liverpool will revive their interest in the defender.

That’s according to reports in the Daily Express this morning, who say Liverpool will not be deterred by the fact Southampton reported them to the Premier League earlier in the summer for their pursuit of Van Dijk.

Liverpool avoided a sanction, but were forced to abandon their move for the defender and make a public apology for their actions. It was thought that after that episode any deal was dead in the water.

However, Van Dijk has now begged his club to listen to offers for him, and reports now suggest Liverpool will go back in with a £60 million bid - what would be world record for a defender.

Stuart Pearce believes Van Dijk “will end up at Liverpool” this summer.

The Sun say Southampton are lining up Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson as a replacement, but he will cost as much as £30m.

‘Frustrated…insulted…no alternative’: Read wantaway Saints star van Dijk’s full statement

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is understood to have handed in a transfer request at Saints. Below is his statement in full:

“It is with regret that I can confirm that I have today handed in a transfer request to leave Southampton football club.

“Unfortunately I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the club’s intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to 2 weeks wages.

“I will be appealing what I feel to be an unjustified sanction and their inability to follow the correct disciplinary protocol in due course.

“Over the past six months I have held numerous discussions with representatives of the board, the former manager Claude Puel as well as the new manager Mauricio Pellegrino to inform them all of my desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge.

“I am incredibly ambitious and want to achieve as much as I possibly can to fulfil my potential in what is a very short career as a professional footballer. I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and as such I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist.

“I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.”

He continued: “The period of time that I have just spent injured and unable to play has put a number of things into perspective and made me realise just how important it is to take major opportunities should they arise.

“I have consistently relayed my feelings to senior management at Southampton in what I believed to be private and personal conversations. Disappointingly, these conversations have regularly found their way into the media.

“I would also like to make clear that I have never once refused to train. I can confirm that I was asked about my frame of mind and for all of the reasons mentioned above I was open and honest in saying that I did not feel I was in a settled mindset given the circumstances.

“Following this conversation the manager explained that he only wanted players who he felt were 100% committed to Southampton and told me I would therefore have to train away from the first team.

“As a proud professional I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events.

“I had very much hoped to retain the good relationship I’ve always enjoyed with everyone at the club, especially the fans, but unfortunately in light of everything that’s happened this has now been seriously affected.

“I would like to make clear that I have nothing but gratitude to everyone at Southampton for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

“However, the time for me to move on is now and I hope to be able to work with the club to find the best resolution to suit all parties.”

Transfer news live: Latest news and done deals including Manchester United and Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Manchester United appear ready to step up their transfer plans after expressing public interest in Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, as well as current Tottenham left-back Danny Rose.

United manager Jose Mourinho confirmed ahead of Tuesday’s Uefa Super Cup that if Bale does not feature against United, he will see that as a sign that the Wales international is not in Zinedine Zidane’s plans and he will therefore “fight” other managers to sign the 28-year-old.

The Independent understands that Bale is in line to play though, and as a result United are targeting England defender Rose as a Plan B option with a wing-back seen as the alternative option to the wide midfielder that Mourinho wants.

Meanwhile, both Liverpool and Chelsea are weighing up fresh offers for Southampton’s wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk after he handed in a transfer request on Monday, admitting that he was “insulted” by the way the club have treated him.

Finally, Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista could be on his way out of the club after Valencia confirmed they are in talks to sign the Brazilian.

Sunderland to sell Lamine Kone for right price as West Ham and Southampton show interest

Show/hide article…

Lamine Kone: West Ham and Southampton like the defender

The Black Cats’ boss has revealed he’s renewed his faith in the French centre-half after his performance in the opening 1-1 Championship draw at home to Derby.

Kone was booed off after an error-strewn display in the 5-0 friendly defeat against Celtic with many fans believing he was playing badly to get away.

But while Grayson accepts Kone can leave if a big enough bid is lodged, he is convinced the defender has not laid down tools.

“He has shown a good attitude,” said the Sunderland chief.

“We have a value on his head and if nobody reaches that value, he will stay.

“Lamine has been questioned but he was outstanding the other night.”
