What happened next to stars of first Premier League season photo?

Show/hide article…

The start of the coming Premier League season marks the 25th anniversary of the first campaign for the then-breakaway league.

It was marketed as a whole new ball game, and comparing football now and then explains why. Leeds United were champions - not a Championship side - and at that point the record-breaking transfer was Jean-Pierre Papin’s £10million move to AC Milan.

As part of the promotion for that season, new broadcasters Sky Sports gathered 22 players for a promotional photo. Sportsmail has taken a look at what happened next for each player and club.

Having been one of the contenders for the title the year prior, Sheffield Wednesday stumbled to a seventh-place finish. This would be Hirst’s last injury-free season as between August 1993 and May 1995 he played just 25 games. A move to Southampton was unsuccessful because of the same injury issues. His son George now plays for the Owls.

After being pipped to the Division One title by Leeds United, Alex Ferguson’s side were crowned the first Premier League winners. Sharpe was expected to be the a star but it never really panned out. He suffered a bout of meningitis around the time of this photo. Appearances for United were limited after that point and moves to Leeds, Bradford and Portsmouth did not go to plan. Sharpe later appeared on ITV’sCelebrity Wrestling as ‘Sharpe Shooter’, went on Celebrity Love Island, Dancing on Ice and even appeared on Coronation Street as a taxi driver.

Aston Villa were United’s closest challengers for that inaugural crown, although they finished 10 points behind the top-placed side. Daley’s best years were behind him by the start of the Premier League. He left Villa, the club he made the most appearances for, in 1994 and went on to make few appearances during spells at Wolves, Watford and Walsall. Daley trained as a fitness coach and had a 10-year period at Wolves, leaving in May of this year.

Chelsea were about 10 years away from becoming the side most modern fans could identify. They finished 14th in 1992-93. Jones didn’t even play a Premier League game for Chelsea, leaving to rejoin former club Wimbledon. He spent six seasons there before a short spell at QPR. His post-football career is more well known. Jones is known as the star of films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, X-Men and the upcoming Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Recently courted controversy with a hunting photo.

Liverpool’s era of domestic dominance was over and they would finish sixth in the 1992-93 season. Wright himself captained the Reds in that first Premier League campaign. He would go on to be regarded as one of Liverpool’s 100 most influential players. Wright retired at 35 in 1998 before going into a career as a manager, including three spells at Chester. He is now head of club development at Southport and an advocate for foster care.

Ipswich followed up their promotion to the top flight with a 16th-place finish in the Premier League. They began the season with an unbeaten run of eight games and were fourth by February but dropped off dramatically. Wark was in his third season at Portman Road. The midfielder played until the age of 39, featuring in a staggering 826 league games. He now works in corporate hospitality at Ipswich.

Southampton struggled to an 18th-place finish. Flowers spent that season at The Dell but he was not long for that parish. He joined Blackburn in November 1993, becoming the most expensive goalkeeper in England. Flowers went on to become a Premier League winner in 1995. He has coached since retirement, although his last position of note was a two-week long spell as Kidderminster Harriers manager.

As an omen for things to come, Blackburn finished that first season in fourth. Sherwood would be a key cog in a successful spell over the next three seasons that would culminate with a title in 1995. He has become better known for his win percentage in retirement, although an ill-fated spell as Swindon director of football last season led to criticism for his role in a destructive campaign. Also works as a pundit on television.

A ninth-placed finish for Manchester City was something of a positive compared to their general struggles throughout the 90s. Brightwell stayed at Maine Road until 1998 before moving to Coventry, where he played zero games over two seasons. He spent time as Macclesfield manager. Brightwell has done co-commentary work.

Norwich were the surprise package of the Premier League, finishing third after a blistering start. They looked, at one point, as though they might win the league. Butterworth was forced to retire in 1994 after a knee injury, although he did spend a short spell in the USA with the Colorado Rapids. He managed Cobh Ramblers and IK Brage. He was chief scout at QPR and is now involved in international and UK recruitment at Burnley.

Segers and Wimbledon managed to come 12th in the top flight as their glorious 1980s high point extended into the new era of English football. Segers never finished below 14th with Wimbledon. But in 1994 he was accused of match fixing. He was later cleared in 1997 but was found guilty by the FA of breaching betting regulations. Segers has done some coaching in retirement.

Coventry, something of a fixture in the Premier League’s early years, came 15th in 1992-93. Pearce left the club at the end of that first season to join Sheffield Wednesday, where he played 66 games. Pearce is no longer a prominent person in football.

Sheffield United dropped to a lower mid-table finish, coming 14th. After 147 games for the Blades, Bradshaw left the club in 1994 for Norwich. His contract with the Canaries was cancelled after he assaulted a taxi driver and spent a short spell in prison. Bradshaw then went on to play for Wigan, Scunthorpe and Alfreton Town. He has worked as a qualified bricklayer in his hometown of Sheffield in retirement. Bradshaw was open about not being interested in staying in the game.

An eighth-placed finish beckoned for Tottenham during the opening Premier League season. Durie lasted just one campaign in the top flight with Spurs, moving in 1993 to join Rangers, where he won the Scottish league seven times. Durie worked as a coach at Ibrox under Ally McCoist, leaving in 2015. He was declared bankrupt in 2016.

Arsenal came 10th in the top flight during the 1992-93 Premier League campaign. Hillier featured in 43 games but missed both the League Cup and FA Cup final after picking up a leg injury. After establishing himself in the first team he dropped back out as fitness woes reared their head. Hillier had spells at Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers. As of 2015, he was working as a fireman in Bristol.

It was not an enjoyable campaign for Nottingham Forest, who finished bottom of the Premier League in Brian Clough’s last season as manager. Charles left the City Ground in the summer of 1993 to join Derby County. After battles with alcoholism, he attained a coaching licence and went on to become director of football at the University of Nottingham.

The Latics stayed in the top flight by the skin of their teeth, finishing on equal points with 20th-placed Crystal Palace but with a better goal difference by a margin of two. Ritchie stayed for another two seasons, scoring 104 goals in 250 games. ‘Stitch’ became Oldham manager in 1998 and took charge of Barnsley and Huddersfield during his managerial career. He currently works as a columnist for the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Palace were the unfortunate victims of Oldham’s slightly better goal difference. Salako helped Palace return to the top flight at the first time of asking but they were relegated once more the season after. He left his boyhood club in 1995 but returned in retirement as a coach at various age groups. Salako now works for Sky Sports during live games.

Sinton’s QPR side were surprise performers in the first Premier League season, coming fifth. Sinton left at the end of that season to join Sheffield Wednesday before time at Tottenham, Wolves, and Burton. But the 51-year-old is still heavily tied to QPR and works as a club ambassador for the west London side.

Middlesbrough were relegated, finishing in 21st, five points off safety. Kernaghan left the ship as it sunk, joining Manchester City, although he never really settled at Maine Road. He spent time coaching at Brentford before becoming Glentoran manager in 2015, although he resigned after less than a year. Kernaghan recently gave an interview in which he discussed his life with diabetes.

Leeds were the last champions in the old system but they dropped to a 17th-place finish in the first Premier League season. Strachan won Player of the Year that campaign and stayed at Elland Road for a further two seasons - including a fifth-place finish the next season. He joined Coventry as assistant manager while also featuring infrequently for the first team. The diminutive midfielder eventually took over as manager after Ron Atkinson left. He is currently Scotland manager.

Everton came 13th in the first ever Premier League season and have been a fixture in the top flight ever since. Beardsley only spent two seasons with the Toffees after moving from Liverpool, returning to Newcastle in the summer of 1993. The former forward has spent years coaching for Newcastle and works as a football development manager at the club under Rafa Benitez.

Album Usual Alias to give hospital charity a boost

Show/hide article…

IS that your real name or is it an alias? Southampton-born singer songwriter Lee Desty was once jokingly asked that question by a top BBC TV executive - an exchange he never forgot.

It inspired the title of his latest album of 17 original folk pop songs Usual Alias, which is out now on CD and music streaming services.

Album sales have so far boosted The Murray Parish Trust #2MillionSteps appeal to help build a new children’s emergency and trauma department at Southampton General Hospital to the tune of more than £500.

A former Daily Echo journalist and award winning Editor of BBC South Today , Lee has enjoyed the response to his new album from radio listeners across the world, particularly in the US & Canada. One of his compositions Completely Yours, was a finalist in the Hollywood USA Song Contest in 2015.

A life long Saints fan of over 52 years and still a season ticket holder at St Mary’s , Lee says musical influences include Paul Simon, Cat Stevens , Joni Mitchell , Nick Drake , Al Stewart and Martyn Joseph …but says he also enjoys Indie folk stars like Bon Iver and Damien Rice.

Based in Totton, Lee has so far raised close to £500 for the local charity and hopes to raise more : “ It’s been a lot of fun helping the Murray Parish Trust via the album and I know there are other hospital charities in Southampton wonderful things for the new children’s A &E. I’m really not keen on running marathons so I thought this was a better way of raising money.”

If you want to donate to Lee’s fundraising you can do so via https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/leedesty1 or contact him via his web site http://www.leedesty.co.uk to get a copy of his CD in exchange for £5 donation to the charity.

. “ I seem to have a lot of fans in Idaho , South Carolina and Missouri in the US for some reason,” said Lee . “ I guess that’s down to the mysteries of the internet & music streaming. I’ve also got fans in South Africa , Hong Kong and Greece . Some of those have contributed to my Southampton hospital charity fundraising which is a bit special .”

Diving bans and ABBA penalties: The 2017/18 Premier League rules

Show/hide article…

The start of the 2017/18 Premier League season is here, with new players, new managers and new teams, but what about new rules?

The most notable change over the summer has been the introduction of a retrospective ban for diving, which could see players suspended for two matches if found guilty.

But what are the rules that are being introduced this season, ones that are under discussion and what should we expect from Premier League referees? With the help of Dermot Gallagher, we take a look…

Players who dive next season will face punishment. The Football Association passed a rule at their Annual General Meeting in May that will see two-match bans handed out for simulation.

The FA will also be able to rescind a yellow or red card given to the player who was deemed to have committed a foul, if the player was found guilty of diving. And players can be punished for “attempting to deceive the referee by feigning injury”.

Footage will be reviewed each Monday by a three-man panel, consisting of one ex-match official, one ex-manager and one ex-player. Each panel member reviews the footage independently of the other members.

The FA will then act if there is “clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation.” The panel must be unanimous in their decision and players can be banned for two matches if they are found guilty.

DERMOT SAYS: “I really like this idea. I think if someone dives and wins a penalty or manages to deceive the referee then on a Monday morning, he’s up before the panel of three and if they decide he has dived, he gets a two-match ban. I think it is a really great thing and it will act as a great deterrent. I don’t want to see players suspended for it and I think the fact it is there now will stop it in the first instance.”

Penalty shoot-outs are changing. Arsenal have already profited from the new ‘ABBA’ method as they beat Chelsea in the Community Shield.

While the traditional shoot-out sees Team A take a penalty, then Team B, then Team A, then Team B, and so on, the ‘ABBA’ shootout is like a tennis tie-break. Team A takes the first penalty then Team B takes two successive penalties, before Team A takes two successive penalties and so on.

The EFL will also be trialling the new ‘ABBA’ method in the Carabao Cup, Checkatrade Trophy and EFL play-offs. It was previously used at the U20 World Cup this summer and also the Premier League Asia Trophy, with Leicester beating West Brom in a lengthy shoot-out.

DERMOT SAYS: “It was felt that the team that went first had an advantage. I’m open-minded about it. It’s something different and something that the players took to in the Community Shield so let’s see what happened.”

While there have not been any rule changes for offside and handball calls, there has been a focus for referees on the latter in particular after it cropped up on a number of occasions last season.

It will also be the second season that the newest addition to the offside laws will be implemented - where if a player makes an obvious action which clearly impacts on his opponent’s ability to play the ball, then he will be penalised as offside - which came into force at the start of the 2016/17 campaign.

DERMOT SAYS: "Handball was a burning issue last season. It’s a bit like last year but there will be a bit of tightening up. Let’s look at the speed that the ball travels. You’re looking for someone who puts his arm out, somebody who makes their body bigger or moves towards the ball to try and close it down. Also, if the ball travels a long way and you’ve got your arms out, it is going to be penalised. Things like that.

“Offside calls are pretty straight forward now. We saw last season that people took to the new rules, a few people queried it, but that is the nature of the beast. I think, by and large, offside calls worked much better. People accepted it more, the players understood that if they didn’t touch the ball then they weren’t interfering with play and if they didn’t impact on an opponent then that would be the case. So again, it is the same thing.”

Although it is not a confirmed introduction, VAR is expected to be implemented in the Premier League at the start of the 2018/19 season with the FA keen to trial it from the third round of the FA Cup this term.

VAR has already been in action around the world, with the Confederations Cup and U20 World Cup using the technology over the summer as well as in the MLS and Australian A-League while the Bundesliga and Serie A have plans to implement it this season. The 2018 World Cup in Russia is also set to use VAR.

The technology involves an additional referee placed in a booth with access to every available camera angle. They will then be able to advise the referee of an error in the event of a game-changing situation including goals, penalties, straight red cards and mistaken identity in awarding a red or yellow card.

DERMOT SAYS: “Whether you like it or not, it is going to work in the Premier League. This is a big, big year from Friday night until we kick off next season, everything is going to be done to get it up and running so it can be rolled out next August but they have got to get it right. What they are going to do is look at everything, tweak everything so I’m not standing here next August saying ‘well they have to do this next week’. It’s going to be ‘that’s how it is’.”

It’s a sad moment for the creative groundsmen - especially at Leicester and Southampton - who have caught the eye with their decorative pitch designs over the last few seasons.

But Premier League Rules now state that the playing surface must contain no markings other than the traditional horizontal and white lines, following similar regulations implemented by UEFA in their competitions.

DERMOT SAYS: “Everybody has got to do the same so the real modern idea of doing something different like the Leicester and Southampton groundsmen, who are brilliant, can’t be done now. It has to be straight lines, unfortunately.”

Virgil van Dijk to Chelsea: Star a target since December, but Blues won’t pay £70m

Show/hide article…

Saints have held firm so far this summer, insisting their star player is going nowhere.

Liverpool have been sniffing around trying to get him, but were shot down by their Premier League rivals.

The Reds were forced into an embarrassing public end to their pursuit after being accused of tapping up Van Dijk.

And now Chelsea could benefit from Liverpool’s blunder.

Antonio Conte is desperate to add new faces and according to the Evening Standard, he’ll move for Van Dijk if he becomes available.

Fixtures put Gabbiadini in Fantasy frame

Show/hide article…

Looking to get the edge in your Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues? The Scout names the fourth and final player being overlooked by the masses.

Starting two of Southampton’s final three pre-season friendlies, and supplying two goals and an assist, means Manolo Gabbiadini (£7.0m) has made a late claim for a place in our FPL line-ups.

The striker scored against Saint-Etienne and Sevilla and could cement Gabbiadini’s spot in the starting XI ahead of Charlie Austin (£6.5m).

Gabbiadini was quick to make an impact after signing from Napoli in January.

He scored six times in his first four appearances in all competitions, including a brace against Manchester United in the EFL Cup final.

The goals dried up after he was injured against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 29.

But Gabbiadini may become a key man for new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

When on the pitch last season, he scored or assisted 71.4% of Southampton’s goals.

He also averaged a shot every 25 minutes, only marginally slower than the rate of 22.9 minutes by Harry Kane (£12.5m).

Southampton’s opening schedule gives Gabbiadini the opportunity to make a flying start.

According to the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR), only one of their first 11 opponents score more than two.

Gabbiadini is found in just 4.7% of squads, but that figure will soar should he extend his summer goalscoring spree in Saturday’s opener at home to Swansea City.

Southampton Cup: Day One

Show/hide article…

More than 40 boys’ and girls’ teams from around the world are participating in the eight-day international youth tournament, which runs throughout the coming week.

There were smiles all round for the excitable under-7s at Wide Lane Sports Ground, with their excellent performances setting the standard for the rest of the day’s games.

Spirits were high throughout the day as teams from across the country competed in the round-robin stages whilst putting on an entertaining show for both management staff and spectators alike.

Players were rewarded for their fantastic efforts at the end with medals and a warm applause from proud families, friends and coaches.

Teams included Pickwick Lions, Greenfields Falcons, Fareham Town, PG10, Sholing, Pace, Champion Sport Group, Denton and South Heighton and Hythe and Dibden Predators.

In the under-14s Academy matches, Chelsea and Southampton both kicked-off their respective campaigns.

Chelsea struggled to settle into the game and two first-half goals were enough to see Portuguese side FC Porto pick up victory.

Saints started well but were unfortunate to find themselves 2-1 down at half-time, before a fantastic second-half outing from GNK Dinamo Zagreb saw them fall further behind.

Southampton (Devon) got off to an excellent start after a 12-0 victory over Andover Town Youth in their Under 14’s Premier Boys Group B clash.

The Saints under-12s Academy team finished their first match with victory, thanks to an impressive 4-1 success over Brighton & Hove Albion.
