Pellegrino: Saints ‘ambitious’ in transfer market

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino insists Saints remain ambitious in their desire to improve the squad.

Saints have so far only completed one summer deal with the £5m capture of young Polish centre half Jan Bednarek.

Pellegrino has already revealed that the club have come close to getting a couple of deals over the line, only to be pipped at the post.

The latest player heavily linked with a move to St Mary’s is Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Saints have agreed a £16m fee for the 23-year-old defender, who started his career in France with Lorient and Marseille before sealing a €9.5m switch to Juventus in 2015.

Lemina, who has been capped nine times by Gabon, is mainly known as being an engine room midfielder, who would likely compete with Oriol Romeu and Steven Davis for a place in the side should Saints get a deal done.

Pellegrino appeared to cast doubt on a potential move for Lemina after the pre-season win over Sevilla, but later in the day Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri confirmed the player would be leaving, sparking fresh reports that Saints will sign him.

Pellegrino said: “I don’t know anything about him.

“We are studying the market with some options.

“It is difficult to bring in important players and hopefully some of them can come in to make us stronger.”

However, the manager was adamant that Saints are looking to sign new faces.

“We are there expecting and ready, and always if we can improve our squad we will do it,” admitted Pellegrino.

“It is difficult because we have a good squad but we want to give another step in our ambition from inside and from outside also.”

The good news for Pellegrino is the clear signs of progress Saints showed in their victory over Sevilla in the final game of pre-season.

“I think that little by little we were getting better,” reflected the Saints boss.

“After the first goal and after the second the team had more confidence, but it’s normal against the biggest teams in Europe.

“We have to improve and to learn about everything in the team.

“In the Premier League the characteristics of the teams are different, are more direct, even the biggest team.

“But for that reason you have for me the good teams are the teams that adapt in every single situation, and you have to adapt to every single situation.”

Paul Merson’s season predictions: Man City for the title, Arsenal to miss out on top four?

Show/hide article…

Paul Merson’s season predictions: Man City for the title, Arsenal to miss out on top four?

He’s back! Paul Merson gives us his season predictions ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Last year, the Magic Man correctly tipped Chelsea to win the title, despite a 10th-placed finish the previous term.

Here, Merson returns with some bold predictions for the 2017/18 term…

Going forward they are very strong, and they have bought players at the back. Pep Guardiola has bought well, bought a lot of pace in the team at the back, including Kyle Walker.

But if they do not win the league this year, it’s Guardiola’s fault. It’s as simple as that for me. I think the manager didn’t adapt to the Premier League last year; he played the same way every game, and you’ve got to be adaptable in certain matches.

Jose Mourinho will set up to go to grounds and get a result, but Pep will set up the same way whether playing at Manchester United away or a lower-end team at home.

I am interested to see whether they put all their eggs into the Premier League basket or in the Champions League. They’ve won the title two out of the last three years.

In the year Antonio Conte left Juventus, the Italian side didn’t get out of the group stages of the Champions League. The year later they got to the final in Berlin, and I wonder if he feels he’s got something to prove there.

The players will look at it and think they’ve got a chance in the Champions League. I don’t think their squad is big enough to do both, if I’m being honest. They played once a week last year.

They’ll be good enough in the league, don’t get me wrong, but I think they might focus on Europe.

If Tottenham were playing at White Hart Lane I’d have them as champions. They’ve got the best team, they haven’t had to buy anybody. They will miss Walker surging forward, but Kieran Trippier is a great replacement.

I just think of them playing away from home for 38 games; they didn’t have the greatest away record last year but had a superb home record.

They worry me in that sense, but I still think they could finish third. They do need a couple more squad players before the end of the window, however.

I’m going fourth now for United, but that could change by the end of the transfer window.

I say that because I think Philippe Coutinho leaves Liverpool. In football, if Real Madrid or Barcelona come in for you, you’re leaving. It’s very rare someone rejects them, and that’s my worry for Liverpool. If Coutinho stays, I think Liverpool could finish above Manchester United, and they’re top four.

But I say top four, I really think there won’t be many points between any of these teams. It’s phenomenal this year, any team can go and do something.

People say Romelu Lukaku is a flat-track bully and only scores against the lesser teams; those are the teams United struggled against last season. Now, if he scores against those teams, he won’t have to score against the big teams because Mourinho sets up to draw and steal a goal from a set piece or elsewhere.

I think they’re a long way off still, I really do. I don’t see Alexis Sanchez staying at Arsenal by September, and when you look at the rest of the team, I don’t see it happening.

Alexandre Lacazette is a good player, but not everybody else was going after him. If you’re good and playing in France, PSG will be after you, or Monaco, who lost a lot of their players. That’s my worry. He plays that one-two, which will be good for Arsenal, but he’s not going to beat three players.

People talk about Arsenal in the Europa League, maybe suggesting they won’t bother trying in it, but Arsene Wenger still has to fly out somewhere on the Wednesday, won’t get back until the Friday. It is still tiring.

Therefore, I would tell Steve Bould to be in charge of the Europa team, and Wenger could work at home with the Premier League team.

You look at it, the £30m spent on goalkeeper Jordan Pickford; if he saves them seven or eight points, they’re still going to finish seventh.

If they can get Gylfi Sigurdsson that would be a big boost, but at the moment I think this team needs to gel.

They’re another team in the Europa League, and they will be really going for it, because fans want silverware at Goodison Park. For me, they consolidate this year and go for silverware, but the future is looking bright for them.

Virgil van Dijk should stay, I don’t see him going to Liverpool. They’re solid, the best of the rest.

I like Craig Shakespeare and think the players will work hard for him. If Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy gel up front they will be a massive handful with two in attack, with Islam Slimani to boot too. I think Leicester will be fine and won’t have a season like last season.

Javier Hernandez is better coming off the bench, in my opinion, and West Ham are obviously going to start him. He made a huge impact coming on for Manchester United.

If they can get Andy Carroll fit and they play the big man-small man combo, it could work really well. You wouldn’t want to be a defender against those two.

Buying Marko Arnautovic for a few million and selling him for £25m does seem like good business, but is it good business in this day and age in the Premier League? He was their best player.

Kurt Zouma has come in and they will be solid as anything at the back. But for me, teams like Stoke need good cup runs. They’re not getting relegated, they’re not getting the top seven, have a go at the cups!

I like Frank de Boer. Palace look good going forward, though I do worry about them at the back. They’re a bit ageing in defence, and if they can get Mamadou Sakho in they will be alright. If they don’t get someone like him in, they could drop a few places.

Tony Pulis is going to make them hard to beat, Tony is Tony! If you take him out of there, I think you drop them down five or so places.

But with him there, they’re great at set plays, and they’re solid. Mid-table is about right for them again.

Paul Clement got them going with a bit of momentum at the end of last season, and they have had a good pre-season under their belt now. But if Gylfi Sigurdsson leaves you can maybe drop them down a few places. He’s a top drawer player.

I like the Jermain Defoe signing, and make no mistake, Defoe has gone there because he wants to go to the World Cup with England.

They’ll play two up front, and they make chance after chance. They’re a team you love watching, they score but let in plenty too.

Jonathan Walters, for me, is one of the signings of the season so far. For £3m, in this day and age, it’s the price of a cup of tea. You couldn’t buy a Championship player for £3m!

You’ve got a player that buys into Burnley, a hard-working team, gives his all and will never moan. If you tell Jon what to do, he’ll do it, and he’ll chip in with the odd goal in big games too.

They won’t be happy with this, but they haven’t really recruited yet. I worry for them, and I think the fans will keep them up. This is a Championship team, and they haven’t really added much top-flight quality.

They get 50,000 every week, they have Rafa Benitez as manager, go out and sign two £30m players! They haven’t done that, and I think they’re cutting corners. I worry about Benitez getting frustrated.

Marco Silva has brought in Will Hughes this summer, doing well at Derby, but has he ever played in the Premier League?

And then Nathaniel Chalobah from Chelsea, again, he’s putting two players in their midfield that haven’t played much top-flight football.

The worry for me is Troy Deeney; if he stays I think they have a chance of surviving, but he’s the catalyst there, bringing the team together on and off the pitch.

I like Anthony Knockaert, and I’m looking forward to seeing him in the Premier League, he’s the sort of player that gets you off your feet.

But I just see Brighton as a nice place to go for away teams. You’re not going to go there and think: “Oh my God, I don’t fancy this.”

David Wagner has bought a few players, but I just think this is a massive jump up for them. Huddersfield have a massive pitch and play at a high tempo; playing that tempo in the Championship, you get the ball back very quickly. In the Premier League, players are too comfortable. If you go and press Man City they will just knock it around you and be away on goal.

They’ll be fun to watch, and will win some games, but I don’t see them staying up.

Paul Merson joins Max Rushden for the new PL Prediction Show from 5.30pm, Friday on Sky Sports Premier League. He’s also back on Soccer Saturday from midday, Saturday, Sky Sports News.

Liverpool transfer news: Coutinho to Barca agreed claim, Van Dijk hint, Gerrard prediction

Show/hide article…

Philippe Coutinho is reportedly on the verge of a £90m move to Barcelona. That’s according to ESPN Brazil who claim Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has met with Barcelona chiefs to thrash out a deal. And the move could be finalised in the coming days ahead of Liverpool’s opening Premier League game against Watford. The Reds have already rejected two bids from Barcelona with Jurgen Klopp insistent the Brazil international will not be leaving Anfield. But these latest reports suggest a move is edging closer with Barcelona keen to find a replacement for Neymar.

Klopp has suggested Liverpool don’t need to sign Virgil van Dijk - because they have enough quality at the club already. Van Dijk continues to train alone at Southampton and he has reportedly set his heart on a move to Liverpool. But Southampton are not budging on their asking price and Klopp admits Liverpool may not even need to sign him. “We have four (centre-backs). I don’t think we need more,” Klopp said.

“In the moment I’m fine. We are open until the 31st (of August). We cannot force the things and we would never get a centre-back just because.” Steven Gerrard has backed Liverpool to be a force to be reckoned with this coming season. Klopp has signed Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson and Dominic Solanke this summer and have enjoyed a successful pre-season with their only defeat being a penalty shoot-out against Atletico Madrid. And Liverpool legend Gerrard is excited about what Liverpool can achieve when the season gets underway this weekend.

Jurgen Klopp satisfied with Liverpool’s defensive options

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp insists he is “happy” with his Liverpool centre-backs ahead of the new Premier League season.

Virgil van Dijk was a target for Liverpool earlier this summer, but the Reds withdrew their interest after Southampton complained to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach.

The 26-year-old has been training away from the Southampton first team and played no part in their pre-season matches having told manager Mauricio Pellegrino he wants to leave the club.

Klopp, though, maintains he is not desperate to bring in defensive recruits before kicking off the new league campaign against Watford on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

“Look out there and tell me five that would make us stronger. Five. Then you win a prize. It’s difficult how it is,” said Klopp, following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao last weekend.

"We have four. I don’t think we need more. We cannot force the things and we would never get a centre back just because (of the sake of it).

“I’m happy. You can imagine we are still working on different things and we will see if it works. I am already here to work with this squad and not just always thinking ‘but if we don’t get this or this’.”

Liverpool rejected an £11m bid from Napoli for Alberto Moreno earlier this summer - according to Sky sources - and Klopp has been particularly impressed by a series of mature pre-season displays from the left back, who struggled for form during the majority of last campaign.

“What I said is the truth. There is all this talking about signings and then you see Alberto Moreno - what a pre-season. You saw it. He has matured 100 per cent,” Klopp added.

“Ryan Kent looked unbelievable, Dom (Solanke) - yes maybe a few guys expected that, maybe not. That’s cool and I cannot ignore it.”

Jurgen Klopp appears to finally end Liverpool’s interest in Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Jurgen Klopp appears to have finally ended any lingering interest in Virgil van Dijk insisting he’s more than happy with the centre backs already in his squad.

Southampton accused Liverpool of making an illegal approach for the Dutchman earlier this summer which saw the Reds immediately drop their interest and issue an official apology.

Despite that Van Dijk has gone on to reiterate his desire to leave the club with Liverpool understood to still be his preferred destination.

But with the transfer window set to close in three weeks’ time Klopp appears to have drawn a line under the whole saga.

“Look out there and tell me five that would make us stronger. Five. Then you win a prize. It’s difficult how it is,” he said.

Klopp has signed Hull left-back Andy Robertson but reveals he has been particularly impressed by a series of mature pre-season displays by incumbent Alberto Moreno, who struggled for form during the majority of last campaign.

“What I said is the truth. There is all this talking about signings and then you see Alberto Moreno - what a pre-season. You saw it. He has matured 100 per cent,” he added. “Ryan Kent looked unbelievable, Dom (Solanke) - yes maybe a few guys expected that, maybe not. That’€™s cool and I cannot ignore it.”

Liverpool open their league campaign on Saturday with a trip to Watford, three days before the first leg of their Champions League playoff at Hoffenheim.

Manchester clubs to battle for the title; Chelsea, Liverpool to miss the top four

Show/hide article…

With the new Premier League season upon us, Iain Macintosh puts himself on the line by predicting where all 20 clubs will finish the campaign.

They say that you learn more from failure than you do from success. If that’s true, then City should win the title. There were times last season when you suspected that Pep Guardiola could have written entire books based on individual games. Everton away, for example. But he has a new goalkeeper now. And three new full-backs. And yet another devastating attacking midfielder. City are going to be terrifying. In a good way this time.

Yes, they certainly underperformed in the league last season, but only Tottenham conceded fewer goals than Jose Mourinho’s side. Unfortunately, United also scored fewer than Bournemouth. But much has changed over the summer. They will be quicker and more potent up front with Romelu Lukaku, and the arrival of Nemanja Matic should free up Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba in the middle. After four years of ignominy, a title challenge awaits.

Tottenham haven’t strengthened this summer, but that’s understandable. They already have one of the most balanced squads in the league. With Harry Winks fit again and Kyle Walker-Peters ready to step up to replace his almost-namesake, they should feel the benefits of stability. The worry is Wembley Stadium. It shouldn’t be a problem. It’s not a haunted house. But if they don’t lay down a victory quickly, you wonder how much it will affect them.

What are Arsenal? Are they the faint-hearted cavaliers who will gallop through the winter and then ride their horse into a tree in the first week of February? Or are they the ferocious scrappers who fought for everything to overturn the odds at Wembley in the FA Cup Final? Their Community Shield performance – a shootout win against holders Chelsea – suggests that latter more than the former, but how much can you read into that? Ah, you know what? Fourth is usually a safe bet.

Let’s ignore the Community Shield result for now. Things may change before the transfer window shuts, but at the time of writing, Chelsea are woefully short of depth. Allowing the likes of Tammy Abraham, Izzy Brown, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kurt Zouma to leave on loan is an odd move, so you presume reinforcements are on their way. After all, the Blues will be stretched by European football already. If they actually suffer some injuries this season, they could be in a lot of trouble.

On their day, there are few sides as dazzling in possession as Liverpool. It’s when they’re out of possession that the problems start. Had they landed Virgil van Dijk, you might feel differently about their prospects. Had they captured the dynamic Naby Keita, you might make allowances. Forwards Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke should prove good signings, but that’s not where the problems are. This could be a frustrating year at Anfield. Still, they’ve got used to them over the years.

Is this the year that Everton break back into the top four? They’ve signed well, they have a manager with three impressive Premier League seasons under his belt and there’s a feel-good factor around the club. But you can’t just drop half a dozen players into a team and expect them to gel. And you do wonder if Ronald Koeman is going to spend six months shuffling his pack to accommodate Wayne Rooney before he concludes, as Mourinho did before him, that Rooney is just not good enough anymore.

Assuming that the players don’t quickly lose faith in their manager and down tools again, this could be a decent season for Leicester. Not decent enough for another crack at the title, but certainly enough to keep them in the European conversation for a while. Harry Maguire will have a chance to displace the injured Robert Huth, Vicente Iborra is a class act and Kelechi Iheanacho is a fine signing. And, thanks to new Premier League regulations, no one is going to get a migraine looking at their pitch.

Newcastle United are back. And this time, they’re competent. After a second year in the rehab of the Championship, the Magpies are rejuvenated and refocused. Rafa Benitez’s meticulous management, not to mention his genuine empathy with the fans, has been warmly appreciated by the locals at St James’ Park. Their spending has been modest, and while there’s tension behind the scenes, Jacob Murphy should be fun to watch and they’ll have more good days than bad.

A quiet season of transition beckons for Southampton and their third new manager in four years, Mauricio Pellegrino. Defender Jan Bednarek is the only arrival this summer, but given vice chairman Les Reed’s record with talent-spotting, you suspect that it’s only a matter of time before Liverpool make a £40 million bid for the young Pole’s services.

Bournemouth’s late run of form brought them an incredible ninth-place finish last season, and they won’t be far off that again. Asmir Begovic is a clear upgrade in goal, Nathan Ake has signed permanently after his impressive loan spell and, while it’s a bit of a shame that Josh King’s place and primacy may be under threat just as he figures out where the goal is, you can’t argue with the signing of Jermain Defoe.

You fear for Mark Hughes now. After three 50-plus-point, ninth-place finishes, last season brought only 44 points and the mediocrity of lower mid-table. The fans are beginning to make their displeasure known, and a slow start could be the catalyst for change. Josh Tymon and Zouma are good young acquisitions, and Darren Fletcher brings experience and composure to the midfield, but will it be enough? Or will this be the first of the medium-sized jobs to lure Sam Allardyce back into football?

Paul Clement’s rescue job on Swansea, a team that looked doomed at the turn of the year, was a fine achievement. Now he has a chance to cast a new side in his own image. Chelsea loanee Abraham will continue his development at the Liberty Stadium and if Roque Mesa proves as impressive as his Errol Flynn moustache, we’re all in for a treat. They should be just fine this year.

Slaven Bilic needs a good season to reassert his authority at West Ham, having been undermined by last year’s woefully inconsistent campaign. He’s certainly bought well. Javier Hernandez should be a guarantee of goals, and if he can unlock the magic of Marko Arnautovic, £24m will look cheap. Joe Hart may yet rediscover his form and Pablo Zabaleta is a venerable God in human form. But there are a lot of variables here, and there’s something that doesn’t add up with the Hammers. If they don’t click quickly, Bilic could be axed.

Frank de Boer and Crystal Palace should be a match made in heaven. And it may yet prove to be so. But a difficult first season of adjustment beckons. Switching gears between the prosaic, calculated counter-attacking of Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce and the more thoughtful, expressive methods of De Boer will bring unavoidable clunking. But expect signs of clear improvement by the spring.

Tony Pulis’ 10th-place finish last season was actually quite disappointing, given where the Baggies had been just a couple of months earlier. Freed from the fear of relegation, they won just two points from a possible 27 in the season’s close. They won’t go down – no one ever does under Pulis – and they’ve got a welcoming enough start to the season, but it’s hard to see them kicking on after such a low key summer.

Burnley were never really in trouble last season, and that’s testament to the management of Sean Dyche. But has he taken them as far as he can? If he thinks he has, perhaps this will be the year that he moves on. He’s signed well. Jack Cork is an underrated midfielder, and Charlie Taylor has been highly thought of for some time. But if the West Ham, Stoke or West Bromwich Albion jobs come up …

The Hornets have done well this summer, recruiting Marco Silva as manager and snapping up Will Hughes and Nathaniel Chalobah from Derby and Chelsea, respectively. But you sense that they’ve been riding their luck for a while now, shuffling their pack on an annual basis to such an extent that the very notion of continuity is an abstract concept. So far, it has (just) worked. But it won’t work forever. And perhaps this is the year they’ll be caught out.

It is a continuing oddity that the least fashionable club promoted to the Premier League will always rack up points early on in the season as it takes advantage of the witless and the complacent. Expect Huddersfield to fulfill that role this season with Crystal Palace and West Ham their most likely early victims. But, as with Hull City last season, their early promise will fade. It was a miracle that a team on such a tight budget was even promoted. It will take an even bigger one to keep them up.

Everyone is going to love a trip to Brighton this season. The bracing sea air, the trendy bars, the discovery that 70 percent of the town’s inhabitants used to live in London but came south to follow their dream of producing their own ironic T-shirt range. Oh, and three points. Much will rest on the shoulders of talismanic Anthony Knockaert. Too much, in all probability.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp appears to rule out Virgil van Dijk move

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is satisfied with his current defensive options and believes there are few centre backs in the transfer market who could improve his current squad ahead of the Premier League season.

Liverpool were hoping to add Virgil van Dijk from Southampton but withdrew their interest in the Dutch centre back after Saints accused them of making an illegal approach.

Klopp is prepared to kick off the campaign with Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez providing back up to first-choice pairing of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

‘Look out there and tell me five that would make us stronger. Five. Then you win a prize. It’s difficult how it is,’ Klopp has told reporters.

'We have four. I don’t think we need more. We cannot force the things and we would never get a centre back just because (of the sake of it).

‘I’m happy. You can imagine we are still working on different things and we will see if it works. I am already here to work with this squad and not just always thinking ‘but if we don’t get this or this’.’

Klopp was particularly impressed by a series of mature pre-season displays by left back Alberto Moreno, who struggled for form during the majority of last campaign.

‘What I said is the truth. There is all this talking about signings and then you see Alberto Moreno - what a pre-season. You saw it. He has matured 100 per cent,’ Klopp added.

‘Ryan Kent looked unbelievable, Dom (Solanke) - yes maybe a few guys expected that, maybe not. That’s cool and I cannot ignore it.’

Loan Watch: Strong start for Reed

Show/hide article…

The Saints midfielder, who is spending the season at Carrow Road, started for Daniel Farke’s men, who grabbed a point thanks to Nelson Oliveira’s late goal.

Russell Martin’s first-half own-goal had given the home side the lead, but Wes Hoolahan, who had come on for Reed with ten minutes remaining, produced an excellent delivery with the clock running down to pick out Oliveira to equalise.

It was also a good day for Southampton keeper Harry Lewis, who helped Dundee United to a 1-0 victory at Inverness Caledonian Thistle on the opening day of the Scottish Championship season.

The 19-year-old has already enjoyed a fine start to life at Tannadice, helping United top their Scottish League Cup group, with the highlight of that being his penalty shootout heroics against fierce rivals Dundee.

His excellent individual form continued into the start of the league campaign, making good stops either side of Paul McMullan’s first-half penalty, first from George Oakley’s angled strike and then Joe Chalmers’ low shot, in what was a faultless display.

In League One, Ryan Seager started for MK Dons, as they hosted Wigan on the opening day of the season.

Seager turned in a lively performance in his 63 minutes on the pitch, testing Latics keeper Christian Walton from distance in the early stages, before setting up Kieran Agard, who nearly broke the deadlock, but fired just wide.

Seager came close to giving Dons the lead after half-an-hour, but headed just wide, before Wigan’s Nick Powell scored what proved to be the only goal of the game shortly afterwards.

The Saints forward did come close to grabbing an equaliser after half-time, but shot just wide from a tight angle.

In League Two, Olufela Olomola started up front for Yeovil Town, but it proved to be a miserable day for the Glovers as they visited Luton Town.

The afternoon had started well, with Otis Khan giving them a seventh-minute lead, but it went downhill rapidly, as the hosts stormed to a 5-1 lead at half-time, before eventually triumphing 8-2, with Olomola being substituted in the 71st minute.
