Steven Davis keen to seal Northern Ireland’s World Cup place after Euro 2016 experience

Show/hide article…

Steven Davis says Northern Ireland’s qualification for Euro 2016 has “left them wanting more” as they prepare to play Switzerland in a two-legged play-off for a place at next year’s World Cup.

Michael O’Neill’s side reached the round of 16 at the Euros before losing 1-0 to Wales at the Parc des Princes and Davis, who will earn his 100th cap for his country at Windsor Park on Thursday when they face the Swiss - live on Sky Sports - feels confidence has grown under O’Neill.

His immediate focus is on helping them make next year’s finals in Russia, with their experience at the Euros ending a run of five consecutive campaigns for Davis where they failed to qualify for a major tournament.

“We never really made that step to feel as though we were really going to achieve it,” Davis told Sky Sports News when asked about their previous failings in qualification.

"You think it is not going to be but there’s always that little feeling you might one day get there.

"We got off to a good start with the first few games in the campaign and that snowball effect built.

"It gives you that extra incentive and real belief that you can go and achieve something and obviously we managed to top the group in the end.

"It was a special campaign and an unbelievable experience at the Euros and it has left us wanting more.

"If you had said to us in this campaign with Germany in the group that we would be in a play-off to get to the World Cup, we would have bitten your hand off.

“We have got it all to play for and we are in the position we want to be in and we will definitely give it our all to try and achieve our dream.”

As for earning his 100th cap as a Northern Ireland player, Davis admits he is thrilled, although is keen to focus on the Switzerland game before reflecting on his achievement later.

“I want to appear for my country as many times as possible,” he added.

"It’s obviously a huge landmark but being the game it is, I don’t want anything to detract my attention from what the game is and that is World Cup qualification.

“Hopefully after the two games it is something I can look back on but going into the games, my sole focus will be on getting the right results.”

Watch Northern Ireland v Switzerland on Thursday. Coverage begins on Sky Sports Main Event at 7pm.

Loan Watch: Four Saints in weekend action

Show/hide article…

The Saints forward featured for 69 minutes in his side’s comfortable victory that was all but complete by half-time courtesy of goals from Aidan Nesbitt and Chucks Aneke.

Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Ed Upson added further strikes midway through the second period to extinguish any hopes of a cup upset.

The weekend’s only other winner was goalkeeper Harry Lewis as Dundee United edged past St Mirren 2-1 to draw level with the Paisley club at the top of the Scottish Championship.

Elsewhere, Sam Gallagher played the full 90 minutes at Oakwell where Birmingham City slipped to a 2-0 defeat, their tenth in 16 league games at the hands of Barnsley.

Harrison Reed’s Norwich meanwhile were beaten 2-1 at Bolton, the midfielder replaced 20 minutes from time by Mario Vrancic.

Jordy Clasie was an unused substitute in Club Brugge’s 0-0 draw with Anderlecht. The result sees the Belgian side maintain their six-point advantage at the top of the table.

Ray Wilkins gives his Premier League weekend grades

Show/hide article…

Who was top of the class in the Premier League at the weekend, and who needs to do their homework? Ray Wilkins gives his grades.

I felt Stoke did very well from going behind twice, and showed a fair bit of grit. They couldn’t quite hack Leicester’s pace in attack, but 2-2 in that fashion isn’t such a bad result.

Leicester historically have a fantastic record at Stoke, so it was always going to be a tough game. Leicester are Leicester, if you leave grass in-behind defensively, Jamie Vardy is going to run into it, and he did all day long. When they went 2-1 up I thought that would be it.

It’s an appalling result for Saints, because you’re expecting to pick up three points at home against sides like Burnley, despite them being extremely well organised. They’re just not getting the shots on goal at the moment, this is why Claude Puel got the sack, because they weren’t adventurous, and I don’t see them any different under Mauricio Pellegrino so far.

Their away form this term has been quite superb, winning at Stamford Bridge on the opening day and picking up more points than they did for the entirety of last season. Last year they stayed up based on their home form, but this year he has them playing a different style of football. He was extremely brave to bring on two attacking players in the latter stages, and Sam Vokes got the winner.

Newcastle, playing at St James’ Park against Bournemouth, you’d probably expect them to win. I’ve not been overly impressed by them this season; I think Rafa Benitez has them organised extremely well defensively, but attacking-wise I haven’t been blown away.

I really like Bournemouth. Eddie has them playing really well, and I think they’ve been unlucky this season. Their forward players have great mobility, and ability. To win away from home in the Premier League is something very special.

Full credit to them, they work their socks off each game, and they’re gaining the rewards. The goal from Rajiv van la Parra was magnificent, Ben Foster didn’t move.

West Brom are really struggling, that’s two wins in 20 Premier League games, no win since August. It’s a difficult time for Tony Pulis. He picked a pretty negative team, too, and I don’t think that’s gone down too well with the punters.

Swansea are in the mire, I think. To be losing against Brighton at home, when you think about the sides who have got to come to Swansea, that’s a tough gig at this moment in time for Clement. I think he’s really up against it, and the way they’re playing I don’t see them getting out of it at the moment.

As I’ve said, getting a win away from home in the Premier League, especially as a newly-promoted side, is a remarkable achievement. Chris Hughton has got them playing some great football.

They’re struggling big time. They’ve sacked Slaven Bilic, and this is massive for them, they just can’t seem to string a pass together. I think the stadium has killed them to be perfectly honest, and the players just didn’t even seem to be putting the effort in.

Liverpool on the attack are probably one of the best sides in the Premier League, with the class of players they’ve got. They just demolished West Ham.

After that mid-week win over Real Madrid, the high of that, it was always going to be difficult to get themselves back up for this game. Pochettino will be delighted that they’ve managed to get a clean sheet. Eric Dier was magnificent at centre-half. Most would assume just beating Real means you go and batter the next team, but it’s not like that at all. You are on such a high, and to get yourself back to being professional on a Saturday is difficult.

They had some huge chances, particularly Wilfried Zaha’s in the second half. They’re lacking a bit of confidence, but I think Roy Hodgson has got them far more organised than they were. I think they’re going to pick up some points, and I think that squad is far too good to go down. But at the moment they’re not winning.

They look untouchable at the moment as an attacking force. They will give you chances, but they look unbelievable, and are so good on the eye, whoever you support, you must enjoy watching that. That’s as good as Barcelona, and that’s the biggest compliment I can pay Pep. He’s got them winning the ball back, a work ethic, and coupled with the quality they’ve got it’s fantastic.

I’m a little bit disappointed with Arsenal, because stats will tell you that you have to score at the Etihad to get anything out of it, and Wenger leaves Lacazette and Giroud on the bench. It was always going to be a tough ask.

It was an incredible game, and when they went 2-0 down you thought ‘good grief’, and I felt for David Unsworth. But the guts they showed to fight for him was brilliant. I loved that. The atmosphere in that ground must have been toxic at 2-0, and to fight for David as they did, I was thrilled to see it. He’s a great footballing bloke.

If you’re 2-0 up away from home you need to be getting something out of that game. It’s heartbreak for them and their form has dipped slightly.

Chelsea, with an immaculate Cesc Fabregas, and with N’Golo Kante back in the side, looked a different outfit. Chelsea upped the tempo after a steady start, and Alvaro Morata scored a proper centre-forward’s goal. I loved seeing that. I loved the game because it was all blood and guts.

After watching them against Roma, I thought if Jose Mourinho has got a chance to win at Stamford Bridge it is now. I thought they were good for the first 15 minutes, but then all of a sudden Chelsea took over.

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata (No 33, up 68 places) netted a match-winner to ease pressure on boss Antonio Conte during a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, heading past David de Gea (No 15, up two places) from a Cesar Azpilicueta (No 10, up 13 places) cross.

In contrast, Glenn Murray (Mo 6, up 10 places) scored a winner for Brighton to heap pressure on Swansea boss Paul Clement, while Riyad Mahrez (No 7, up 15 places) scored a solo goal to put Leicester ahead before a Peter Crouch (No 118, up 126 places) equaliser at Stoke.
