Van Dijk addresses his Saints situation and mentality

Show/hide article…

VIRGIL van Dijk is adamant he’s fully behind the Saints cause and “giving 100 per cent” for the club – despite pushing for a move away in the summer transfer window.

The Dutchman, who handed in a transfer request amid interest from Liverpool and was banished to train alone while his future was decided, insists he’s moved on from the saga that consumed the summer months.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before,” he said. “I’m giving 100 per cent for the club, I work hard every day, I help my team-mates and I’m positive and I want to win every game.

When asked if he’s moved on from what happened, he said: “I think that’s pretty clear. I’ve been playing, you can judge for yourself. I feel good.”

The 26-year-old has now made six appearances this term, including five starts and says he’s “happy” at Saints for now.

“I’m happy and that’s the most important thing. We’ll see what happens,” he said.

“I’m just getting back to pace and I feel like I’ve been growing every game,” he added.

“You know, coming back from an eight month injury is not easy but I’m feeling better every week.”

After tallying just five points in their last six Premier League matches, the Netherlands international knows Saints must start to progress under Mauricio Pellegrino.

Van Dijk believes that the international break will be an ideal pause to get their mentality right before a tough run until the end of the year.

“Every game is important and it’s going to be even more important now to get some points and we know we can play very well against everyone,” he said.

“But, we just need to keep going, stay positive and work hard every week.

“For now, we need to recharge with some of the players going back to their countries and work hard there as well and come back fit and be ready for Liverpool.”

Van Dijk was left frustrated after the miserable defeat to Burnley on Saturday, which made it two wins from seven matches at St Mary’s in the league, and eight in all competitions.

He said: “Goals. It’s very clear that we should have scored. We should have done much better, we can’t be losing at home against Burnley with all due respect and we are all very disappointed.

“You work hard to score and we had lots of opportunities so we have to just keep on going.

“We have to try and keep a clean sheet as well and today I don’t think they got any chances and it’s frustrating for us defenders that from their only chance they got a goal.”

Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk ends interest in Reds declaring his love for Southampton

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk was courted by Liverpool in the summer

The Dutchman asked for a transfer in July to try and force through a dream move to Anfield but Saints refused to let him leave.

Van Dijk, who was stripped of the captaincy, said: “Firstly, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before.

“But I am giving 100 per cent for the club. I work hard every day, I help my team-mates, I’m positive and I want to win every game.

“I am happy and that’s the most important thing so we will just see what happens.”

Van Dijk has also taken a swipe at Saints’ misfiring strikers after Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Burnley.

Van Dijk says he is ‘happy’ and ‘giving 100 per cent’ for Southampton

Show/hide article…

Holland international Virgil van Dijk insists he is ‘happy’ at Southampton and ‘giving 100 per cent for the club’.

Van Dijk was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the most recent window as part of a reported deal worth over ÂŁ50million after handing in a transfer request.

In the end, negotiations collapsed and the 26-year-old centre back remained on the south coast with Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

And now Van Dijk, who was stripped off his captaincy, admits he is ‘happy’ at Southampton but remained coy on his future.

Van Dijk told the Daily Star: 'Firstly, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before.

'But I am giving 100 per cent for the club. I work hard every day, I help my team-mates, I’m positive and I want to win every game.

‘I am happy and that’s the most important thing so we will just see what happens.’

Van Dijk is set to face Liverpool at Anfield following the international break but his Southampton side go into the game on the back of their 1-0 defeat by Burnley.

The result has left Southampton in 13th place in the Premier League following their opening 11 matches but they will be desperate to bounce back after the latest set of international fixtures.

Why Sam Vokes’ latest St Mary’s goal is the first he has celebrated

Show/hide article…

Sam Vokes could not resist celebrating a goal against Saints for the first time on Saturday.

The Saints-supporting Burnley striker’s winner on Saturday was his third goal in four games at St Mary’s and his fourth overall against the club that rejected him as a schoolboy.

But it was the first he has celebrated with such passion against the team he was cheering on from the stands at Anfield and Wembley in last season’s EFL Cup.

Sam’s dad Tim, who owns Vokes Concrete Flooring in Freemantle, watched the game with his fellow Saints fans while more than 20 family members and friends looked on from the Burnley end.

He said: “After being on the bench for so long, which he hates, Sam could not resist celebrating. There was a lot of pent-up frustration from not playing regularly and it just spilled over!

“It doesn’t normally happen, Sam’s still Southampton at heart. – he certainly didn’t celebrate when he helped relegate us from the Championship in 2009!”

Eight years after being rejected by Saints when he was 11, Sam netted a first-minute header past Kelvin Davis in a 3-0 Wolves win at Molineux in April 2009.

The Wales striker’s two previous St Mary’s goals were both scored with Burnley 3-0 down.

They went on to lose 4-3 in the FA Cup third round four seasons ago and he netted a consolation penalty in last season’s corresponding game, a 3-1 Saints win.

His 81st-minute winner on Saturday, after replacing Chris Wood midway through the second half, was far more important.

It was the former Cherries star’s first goal since scoring twice in Burnley’s 3-2 win at Chelsea on the opening day of the season.

Since then Vokes has only been given three Premier League starts by Sean Dyche, so the celebrations continued long after the final whistle.

“Sam’s wife Maddy was in the Burnley end with my other son Matt and his girlfriend and lots of his friends,” continued Tim, who saw his first Saints game a a five year-old in 1967.

“I don’t have a season ticket anymore as I watch Burnley more than Saints but was in the Itchen North Stand with my mates because it’s nearest the away end!

“It was strange game for me, obviously a point for both teams would have been the perfect result but we were very cautious considering we were the home side.

“Sam’s mum [Penny] was gutted to miss the game.

“She had a pre-arranged trip and was even more disappointed to have missed it when she heard that Sam scored the winner!”

Manchester United bottom of Premier League distance covered rankings for 2017/18

Show/hide article…

Premier League tracking data shows that Manchester United have covered less ground than any other side this season.

Jose Mourinho’s men, who were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea on Super Sunday, have covered 1162km so far, putting them just below relegation-threatened West Ham at the bottom of the rankings.

Chelsea, meanwhile, sit seventh in the rankings having covered 1234km, just behind London rivals Arsenal, whose total stands at 1237km.

At the top of the scale, Bournemouth have covered the most ground in the Premier League at 1256km, with West Brom, Tottenham, Watford and Burnley making up the rest of the top five.

Perhaps surprisingly given their reputation for high-pressing and hard-running, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool rank 11th with 1217km covered, in between newly-promoted sides Huddersfield and Newcastle.

Manchester United rank low down on the list for sprints, too, with their total of 5210 putting them 15th in the Premier League rankings.

West Ham are bottom of that category, with Manchester City leading the way. Pep Guardiola’s side, whose intensity was too much for Arsenal on Sunday, have racked up 6198 sprints - over 200 more than second-placed Watford and nearly 1000 more than title rivals United.

The individual player to have covered the most ground in the Premier League is Burnley’s Jack Cork. The industrious midfielder hasn’t missed a minute of the Clarets’ campaign since his arrival from Swansea in the summer, covering a total of 133km in 11 games.

Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure is next in the rankings having covered 130km, with Brighton duo Pascal Gross and Dale Stephens and Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic completing the top five.

As for sprints, the Premier League player with the most is Swansea’s Jordan Ayew. The forward has endured a difficult campaign in front of goal, scoring just once in 11 appearances, but it is not for a lack of effort. According to the tracking data, he has sprinted 796 times.

Tottenham’s Dele Alli is next-highest on 742 sprints, which is all the more impressive considering he missed Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend, and he is followed in the rankings by West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez, Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin and Watford’s Tom Cleverley.

Along with Doucoure and Gross, Rodriguez is one of only three players to feature in the top 10 for both sprints and distance covered.

Liverpool saga past, Van Dijk ‘100 percent’ behind Southampton

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is fully committed to the club despite pushing for a move away from St Mary’s in the close-season transfer window, the defender has said.

The 26-year-old Dutch international, who handed in a transfer request at the start of the season amid interest from Liverpool, said he has moved on from the saga.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before,” he told the Daily Echo.

“I‘m giving 100 percent for the club, I work hard every day, I help my team-mates and I‘m positive and I want to win every game.”

With just five points from their last six Premier League matches, van Dijk reckoned the international break has arrived at the right time for 13th placed Southampton.

He said it was an ideal pause to get their act together ahead of a demanding schedule until the end of the year, starting with a league trip to Liverpool on Nov. 18.

“Every game is important and it’s going to be even more important now to get some points and we know we can play very well against everyone,” van Dijk added.

“For now, we need to recharge with some of the players going back to their countries and work hard there as well and come back fit and be ready for Liverpool.”
