Pellegrino ‘pained’ but defends Saints

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino admitted Saints’ 1-0 defeat to Burnley was a “painful” result, but defended his side against accusations their performance was below par.

Saints were booed from the pitch after the loss, which came courtesy of a goal nine minutes from Southampton fan Sam Vokes with Burnley’s only shot on target.

Pellegrino was also targeted for jeers from unhappy supporters as he went down the tunnel after the loss at St Mary’s.

However, he insisted his team had played well.

“The fans feel the same that we feel,” he said.

“I repeat it was a painful day for us because we deserve more, we did everything with energy, we ran together, we play together and we play good football too.

“Obviously I imagine our fans are disappointed like this, but our fans also know that we play a good game because football is not about arguments, it’s about emotion and it’s difficult to talk about football when you lose.

“When you lose you want to kill everybody and this part of our life.”

He added: “I think that we play well and we play much better than Burnley but in the only aspect that Burnley was better than us was converting and accuracy and efficiency.

“The most important part of the game is the most important moment of the game and this is part of our job and part of our sport.”

The loss meant it was just five points collected from the last five matches, all of which looked winnable on paper.

“We have five points and obviously when we talk about the points they don’t show exactly what happened on the pitch but we survive,” admitted Pellegrino.

“We need points to try to be better on the table.

“We have to use this game as a reference to keep going and playing in our way because I think I see the spirit on the team before the game, on the pitch, off the pitch, really good and I can’t say nothing about our attitude.”

Reflecting on the game he added: “It is part of our job. Sometimes you are better than the opponent in all different aspects of the game except converting chances like today.

“I think the only one on target they convert.

“They were better in this aspect, ok, and it’s really painful because I think we did everything to try to get something more against a good side and I think we played a good game.

“In general, and I repeat, in defence, with the ball, in movement we create chances.

“Our football, our job, is something that is unpredictable, something that is amazing and painful at the same time.”

Burnley boss Sean Dyche is working miracles at Turf Moor

Show/hide article…

Listening to Burnley manager Sean Dyche explain how he has overseen a run of only one defeat in 10 games was, at times, like hearing David Moyes describing key parts of his Everton blueprint.

The main difference was between Dyche’s distinctive East Midlands rasp and Moyes’s gentler Dumbartonshire tones. That has surely not been lost on Bill Kenwright, the Everton chairman who bleeds Goodison Park blue and happens to have a vacancy.

But other worried chairmen may also be casting envious eyes towards Turf Moor and Dyche.

Dyche laughed when it was pointed out, but his team were outside the Champions League places only on goal difference on Saturday evening.

Many assume that Dyche would jump at the chance to move to a club such as Everton, where the investment of Farhad Moshiri means that money is no longer as tight as in Moyes’s day. Dyche recalls Burnley being unable to afford £300,000 to sign James Tarkowski from Oldham and having to buy him later from Brentford, paying ‘10 times more’.

But Dyche insists that spending large amounts of owners’ cash is not what motivates him.

‘You like to buy quality when you can get it, but a big thing for me is developing players,’ he said, reeling off a list of low-budget success stories, including Nick Pope, goalkeeper Tom Heaton’s effective understudy. The Burnley boss did not mention his match-winner, Sam Vokes, an example of Dyche’s developmental skills.

Loaned out by Wolves to six different clubs over three seasons, Vokes never reached double figures in games or goals for any of them, before settling at Burnley in July 2012. Saturday’s goal was his 52nd in the league for the Clarets. Would Dyche’s methods suit a club with aspirations to play more stylish football than Burnley’s?

He maintains that he has played the way that brings the best out of the squad he has to work with — ‘Long ball, short ball, it’s about the right ball’ — and no team was ever made worse by being well-organised.

But the only way to find out what he could do would be for one of those clubs to hand him the reins.

Defender Maya Yoshida came closest to a goal for Southampton, which may explain why they have failed to score in nine of their last 12 home league games. With away fixtures against five of the top six to come, finding a way to win at St Mary’s has become even more urgent.

‘We have togetherness but have to change something,’ Yoshida said.

Premier League hotlist: David Silva, Cesc Fabregas, Mohamed Salah feature

Show/hide article…

Who were the best Premier League players from the weekend games? We take a look at the man-of-the-match performances in our hotlist.

Third-choice goalkeeper Gazzaniga got the call following knocks to Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm, and Spurs were grateful to him for keeping them in the match.

The 25-year-old, who worked under Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton, before teaming up again with his compatriot last summer, produced a host of eye-catching stops to preserve his side’s clean sheet.

Kevin De Bruyne was firmly in the running, but Silva’s typically classy show did not go unnoticed.

The Spaniard was faultless on the ball, and even kept his position with discipline to allow City’s quicker players in Sane, De Bruyne and Sterling to bomb forward.

He had a game-high 64 touches in the opposition half, more than double Arsenal’s highest of 31 from Mesut Ozil, and kept his calm to set up Jesus for City’s vital third goal.

Baines showed his experience and composure at an incredibly important moment in Everton’s season by cooly placing his spot-kick to ensure his side would complete the victory against Watford.

The 32-year-old also produced Everton’s closest opportunity in the first half as his shot was tipped away by Gomes, and he added an assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal to mark a fine performance.

Fabregas was allowed plenty of space by the opposition midfield and he revelled in it, creating six goalscoring opportunities in the match - no other Chelsea player provided more than one. His link-up play with Hazard and Morata, especially in the second half, provided a platform for Chelsea to pin United back. When he was taken off with 12 minutes to go, United breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Salah continued his fantastic start to the season by scoring his 11th and 12th goals for Liverpool. The first was a composed finish with just Joe Hart to beat, while the second was a superb drilled shot across goal and into the bottom corner.

Along with Sadio Mane, the Egypt international looked dangerous throughout and could have scored his first hat-trick as Liverpool continued to flood forward late in the game.

In a game of minimal quality, it was Knockaert who delivered the one moment of magic at the Liberty Stadium, as he cut in from the right and bent in a wonderful cross on his left foot for Glenn Murray to score the only goal.

Even that moment aside, last season’s Championship Player of the Year was the standout player throughout, taking every opportunity to drive at the Swansea defenders with the ball while he also contributed defensively too by winning four tackles.

The Burnley goalkeeper kept his side in the game when they were most under pressure and pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Nathan Redmond, Sofiane Boufal and Maya Yoshida throughout the game.

The 25-year-old, who was nominated for October’s Premier League Player of the Month award, will continue to draw praise after yet another fine performance filling in for the injured Tom Heaton.

In a game full of chances both defensive thirds saw plenty of the ball, Francis stood out for Bournemouth alongside match-winner Steve Cook and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Francis had more touches than any other player on the pitch, and won an impressive 75 per cent of his 29 duels with Newcastle players, and 80 per cent of aerial duels.

He also made a team-high four tackles, and constantly looked forward for Bournemouth’s attacking trio on the break.

In a game of few chances, it was Van La Parra’s magnificent long-range effort just before the interval that proved the difference between the two sides at the John Smith’s.

There appeared little danger when the 26-year-old picked possession of the ball some 35 yards from goal, only for the player to bring the house down with a sumptuous effort that flew past a helpless Foster into the top corner of the net.

That wonder strike - the player’s first-ever Premier League goal - capped off an impressive display from the all-action wide man.

Hailed by Sky Sports analyst Alan Pardew as a “golden cameo”, Crouch changed the game when arrived from the bench with 22 minutes to go just when it seemed to be slipping away from Stoke.

They were lacking in ideas as Leicester were dominating the chances on the counter but the 36-year-old gave Stoke a direct option and he popped up with the all-important equalising goal.

Pellegrino ready for tough run

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has urged Saints to show the “best version” of themselves when they return to a nightmare run of fixtures after the international break.

Saints go into a fortnight off on the back of defeat to Burnley, and know when they return they must face all of the Premier League’s top six before the turn of the year, with five of those games away from home.

It is a daunting prospect for Saints, who have only picked up three wins from 12 games in all competitions so far this season.

However, Pellegrino said: “We will see how we approach this challenge in the next month.

“I have got the illusion to try to show our best version.”

Pellegrino will lose a number of players to international duty now, but will have some of his squad left to work with at Staplewood.

“Always there is aspects that you have to improve but I think with the ball, without the ball, in terms of concentration we were focussed the majority of the game and we were better than Burnley,” he reflected.

“We show a good face today, good personality, in the team but always you can improve.

“Sometimes we did the change to try and win the game, we lose the game, but football is something unpredictable and you can’t manage this.”

Saints refuse to look back and “regret”

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida believes Saints cannot regret failing to capitalise on favourable early fixtures – and simply must be ready to “fight” in the challenging run to come.

In the next ten games, struggling Saints face six of the Premier League’s leading sides.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men go in to these matches off the back of 11 games in which they face just one of the league’s big guns, picking up just three wins.

Now they face the tough task of picking up vital points against top six teams.

After the miserable 1-0 defeat to Burnley at St Mary’s, a defiant Yoshida said: “We can try to find belief, but we can never regret.

“We cannot regret it now, we have to look forward and have to think about why and how we can change and improve.

“If we talk about what we should have done it’s too late.”

Pellegrino’s under pressure side have picked up five points from their last six games and shown little sign of progress under the Argentine boss in the opening 11 games.

Subsequently, the St Mary’s faithful have lost patience and booed Saints off at full-time following Saturday’s defeat.

Yoshida said: “We’ve dropped so many points. We had to win against Brighton and Burnley. They are important three points dropped.

“We needed to win but then we have to fight again for the next fixtures, the tough fixtures.”

Saints’ poor run is deeply concerning for supporters, but Yoshida has a positive message and has again urged Pellegrino’s men to start finding the net regularly.

He said: “We have a good togetherness and a good squad. No one is stupid or selfish. But we need to change something.

“Football is about scoring, so if we don’t score we’ll never win. Scoring is the most difficult thing in football as well.”

Southampton-born Saints fan Sam Vokes netted for Burnley with the visitors’ only shot on target at St Mary’s.

Yoshida was marking the towering Clarets man as he turned home a powerful header.

“I’m definitely frustrated,” said Yoshida. “In the first half we dominated a lot. Second half was a little bit difficult, I don’t know why but it was especially when they changed their strikers and played with two.

“We were unbalanced and they have only twice dominated us and to be honest the goal was very good.

“It’s not easy to head the ball like this. I tried my best but the ball was going backward and he got it technically very well.

“But, I’ve said it 100 times before, we need to score. Football is about scoring.

“I’m very frustrated but sometimes we have to accept and move forward. I feel much better during the game when we had the ball.

“We tried to create something with more thrill and it was much better than the last couple of games, I feel.”

THE VERDICT: Concern starts to build at Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints are going to require a sharp upturn in fortunes after the international break to prevent their season from descending into a dogfight.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and you never really know how costly a below par run of form will be until the end of the campaign, but there is currently every reason to fear that, come January 1, Saints will be looking over their shoulder.

Having now completed 11 top flight matches, almost a third of the season, they have faced just one of the traditional top six sides, and what’s more played seven matches at home.

From here things get harder. And fast.

After this fortnight of respite Saints hit a run until the turn of the year that sees them take on all of those big six clubs, with five of those matches away from home.

While there are a few more winnable games in there too, the pressure on those could make life excruciatingly difficult if matches against the top dogs don’t produce some surprise results.

It’s not to say Saints are incapable of causing a few shocks, of course they can.

Last season under Claude Puel they put in some really good performances against the division’s top six. This season they played very well against Manchester United.

However, ultimately they did end up on the losing side in those fixtures.

It was highlighted here that after a stuttering start to the campaign the four match run – home to Newcastle, West Brom and Burnley with Brighton away also in there - between the October and November international breaks looked crucial if Saints were to have ambitions of seriously challenging in the area of the table they target.

We surmised that probably about ten points was required. Saints picked up five, winning just one of those games.

Given how tight the division is proving then it is fair to say a good run of form could quickly turn things around. Likewise, a bad run of form would suck Saints into danger.

It would be unfair to get carried away and say that Saints are in trouble now, but they are going to have produce some unexpected results, and therefore vastly improved performances, to avoid worrying about it entirely.

The discontent around St Mary’s at the moment is palpable.

While there is a fear among pessimists that Saints are sleep walking towards trouble, there is no such complacency in the stands.

The supporters are, on the whole, not happy.

The frustration of last season has boiled over into this campaign, and Mauricio Pellegrino was booed for both his substitution of Manolo Gabbiadini and when he walked down the tunnel after the Burnley loss.

It’s not exactly the kind of reception you would hope for after just 11 games in a new job.

The pressure really is on now. Whether you believe this is his fault or he is just victim of circumstance with what he has inherited at the club – which would require another ten pages to describe in detail – he is front and centre of it all.

His insistence that Saints played fairly well against Burnley further infuriated some supporters.

Upon reflection, you could understand where he was coming from.

Saints were a little bit better, they did show more attacking promise in spells, and they were trying to do things like stretching the play out wide and get round the outside. That was better.

Burnley showed virtually no ambition for the majority of the game, and it was Saints who were clearly on top for the most part.

That’s all fair enough, and, if you are attempting to take positives, it was a small step forward.

However, it wasn’t so much better that it didn’t have to be combined with a win, which it wasn’t.

There is much whispered comparison now with Saints’ Premier League relegation season, with all those winnable home matches slipping by in the early part of the campaign before a real slump came and left them in trouble.

Most realists would predict that Saints are not going to find themselves in that world of trouble, but there are some parallels.

Saints were downed by Burnley courtesy of a goal from a fan of the club.

Southampton born Sam Vokes held off Maya Yoshida to angle a header from 12 yards out into the bottom corner with nine minutes to go at St Mary’s.

His introduction, along with that of Ashley Barnes as Sean Dyche changed up his front two, proved to be the decisive moment of the game, while Pellegrino found himself criticised for a like for like replacement with Charlie Austin replacing Gabbiadini.

Saints had been on top for much of the game, and were a particular threat either side of half time.

Nick Pope in the Burnley goal made saves from Sofiane Boufal, Ryan Bertrand and Nathan Redmond as Saints built up momentum to take into the break.

They started the second period in a similar fashion with a host of half chances that didn’t find the target, while Maya Yoshida’s superb shot on the turn required a good save from Pope.

With Saints starting to get well on top and Burnley, for the first time, looking ragged and offering space between the lines, came the two substitutions which wrestled them back into it, and set up the route to victory.

It’s a route that Saints need to discover very quickly.
