Fives stats to tell your mates from Saturday’s Premier League games

Show/hide article…

After a hectic day of Premier League action, we bring you five standout stats from Saturday’s games.

Johan Berg Gudmundsson’s late equaliser cost Manchester City victory against Burnley, but with Danilo’s outstanding long-range strike, they did at least score in their 25th Premier League game out of 26 this season. It’s the second best record in the Premier League era after Arsenal in 2000/01, when they found the net in every one of their first 26 games.

West Ham endured a difficult afternoon on the south-coast, going down 3-1 to Brighton, but Javier Hernandez continued his knack for goal poaching. All 43 of the Mexican’s Premier League goals have come from inside the box. According to Opta, the only player to have scored more goals all from inside the box is former Everton man Tim Cahill (56).

Alexis Sanchez marked his first Old Trafford appearance with his first goal for Manchester United, dispatching the rebound after his penalty was parried by Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl. The Chilean was difficult for the visitors to handle, as shown by the fact that no player has won more fouls (seven) in a single game this season.

West Brom were beaten 3-2 by Southampton at the Hawthorns but there was a significant milestone for Chris Brunt. The Northern Irishman’s corner for Ahmed Hegazi’s headed opener was his 31st Premier League assist from a set play. Since his debut in 2008, no player has made more.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Arsenal career started in style as he found the net in Arsenal’s 5-1 thrashing of Everton at the Emirates Stadium. With his chipped finish over Jordan Pickford, the former Borussia Dortmund man became the 16th player to score in the Premier League this season. No side has more different. goalscorers.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino says win over West Brom will lift confidence

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino hopes his side’s 3-2 win against West Brom raises confidence after moving out of the relegation zone.

The south coast club recovered from Ahmed Hegazi’s fourth-minute opener to secure a third win in five visits to The Hawthorns thanks to goals from Mario Lemina, Jack Stephens and James Ward-Prowse.

Salomon Rondon’s header set up a nervy finish but the Saints are up to 14th in the table following a first league win in 13 matches.

“It’s massive for us the three points, especially for belief and confidence for the players,” Pellegrino said. "Most of my players now are fit and physically ready.

“We changed a few players from midweek and I think we showed a good level. But it’s just one game, we still have to do a lot of things. We’ve got many important games in front, and we started today.”

Pellegrino admits his side may have been fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty but believes Michael Oliver could also have awarded a spot-kick to his team following Hegazi’s challenge on Shane Long.

Southampton will look to build on the victory at home to Liverpool, live on Super Sunday next week, and Pellegrino is refusing to get carried away by a first league win in 13 attempts.

He added: “We have to think game by game because every single week everything can change, but we need to improve our level on the pitch. The points are the consequence of our performance.”

In assessing Guido Carrillo’s first start for the Saints, Pellegrino said: "I think he was OK, he was alive with energy, and he supported well.

“He’s a dangerous player in the box and he will be an important player because before we didn’t have this profile with Charlie [Austin] out injured.”

West Bromwich Albion vs. Southampton - Football Match Report - February 3, 2018 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

Southampton claimed all three points in a frenetic Premier League match, moving out of the relegation zone and leaving hosts West Brom in deeper trouble at the bottom of the table.

Goals from Mario Lemina and Jack Stephens turned the game on its head after Ahmed Hegazi’s opener. James Ward-Prowse sealed a 3-2 victory with a free kick in the second half, before Salomon Rondon pulled a goal back in the last 20 minutes.

West Brom’s former Southampton boss Alan Pardew handed on-loan Daniel Sturridge his first start for the Baggies, while Mauricio Pellegrino also played a new attacker – Guido Carrillo starting for the first time since his £19 million move from Monaco last month.

Albion paid tribute to the late Cyrille Regis prior to kick-off – and when the game started the supporters did not have to wait long for the first goal.

Chris Brunt’s pinpoint corner found Hegazi, who had escaped his marker – and the defender’s powerful header found the net to provide the hosts with an early advantage.

Saints immediately went about trying to bring themselves level. Sofiane Boufal, whose wonderful solo goal in the reverse fixture was enough to win the day, tried his luck from distance with a shot which brushed Ben Foster’s far post.

The visitors continued to see plenty of the ball but seemed to be missing Charlie Austin’s guile in the final third – until they made the breakthrough from a set-piece.

Only moments after chants from the away end of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” were aimed at Pellegrino, Boufal picked the ball up from a corner, fed Lemina on the edge of the area and the midfielder lashed in a terrific equaliser.

One became two within minutes when Stephens’ flicked header nestled into the far corner, meaning the beleaguered hosts – who had managed just two home wins all season – required a response after the interval.

It did not come, with Pellegrino’s motivated side picking up where they left off.

Wesley Hoedt’s barnstorming run from defence was only ended when he was scythed down by Gareth McAuley and Ward-Prowse finished off the free-kick from the edge of the area.

The excellent Lemina and Boufal were controlling the midfield, and full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares were enjoying plenty of freedom too.

There was a change in momentum though when Pardew turned to his bench and introduced former Southampton attacker Jay Rodriguez and youngster Oliver Burke, with the latter immediately involved.

Scotland under-21 international Burke brought down Rondon’s cross, skipped past Hoedt and remained on his feet despite a challenge from Alex McCarthy.

Albion maintained their urgency and when Rondon headed in another splendid Brunt cross, The Hawthorns rediscovered its voice.

However, Saints held on for a crucial success which eases the pressure on Pellegrino.

Pellegrino encouraged by West Brom win

Show/hide article…

The 3-2 success, courtesy of goals from Mario Lemina, Jack Stephens and James Ward-Prowse, was of huge significance against a side who also started the day in the bottom three.

And Pellegrino was delighted with the character on show after losing an early goal.

“We are really happy for many aspects but overall I think the belief and the confidence are really important,” he reflected.

“It was an important game, an important three points but in the Premier League you have got a difficult game every week and we have to be humble because we have to do a lot of work still.

“Hopefully these three points can help us to increase our confidence on the pitch.

“It was difficult because we conceded quickly but the team showed personality to keep going and playing in our way.

“After the equaliser and our second goal the confidence was increasing little by little.

“We were suffering until the end because West Brom are good at set-pieces and in direct play but we did a good game.”

Premier League new signings watch: Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan shine

Show/hide article…

There were a host of January signings on show in Saturday’s Premier League games, but who shone and who struggled?

Alexis Sanchez marked his first Old Trafford appearance with a goal as Manchester United beat Huddersfield, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan provided a hat-trick of assists in Arsenal’s thrashing of Everton.

But how did Daniel Sturridge fare for West Brom? And what about Stoke’s £14m midfielder Badou Ndiaye? Read on for our assessments.

Sanchez cut a frustrated figure in the first half at Old Trafford, complaining to team-mates when passes didn’t come his way and earning a booking in added time, but he came to life after the break, scoring his first goal for the club and also playing an important role in the build-up to Romelu Lukaku’s opener.

The stats underlined his influence. The Chilean had 120 touches in total - his highest total in any game all season. He attempted more shots than other player (six) and even made the most tackles (five). The combination of quality and tenacity will have gone down well with his new manager.

Kongolo was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he clattered Scott McTominay in the first half but the on-loan Monaco defender he recovered relatively well after that. On a busy day at the back for Huddersfield, he made more than twice as many tackles and interceptions combined (10) than any of his team-mates.

Ndiaye arrived at Stoke as the club’s second most expensive signing on Deadline Day and went straight into the starting line-up. Despite one day of training - and not even a full session according to manager Paul Lambert - he certainly impressed in the 71 minutes he was on the field.

It took him no time at all - six minutes to be exact - to assist the opening goal for Xherdan Shaqiri, and he took to the physical demands of the Premier League like a duck to water, putting in tackles, getting booked and even squaring up to Lewis Cook at one point.

He could have added a goal to his name in the 21st minute, but his effort just skimmed the post, with manager Lambert saying after the game: “He was brilliant, wasn’t he? He was excellent. I knew he would tire because obviously he hasn’t trained or played for a little bit but I think we’ve got a really top midfielder on the books.”

Joao Mario provided an assist for Javier Hernandez to equalise at Brighton, but that proved to be highlight for the Inter Milan loanee and West Ham. David Moyes admitted after the game that West Ham were well off the pace set by Brighton, and Mario’s performance typified a frustrating afternoon for the Hammers. Often isolated and susceptible to the Brighton press, Mario’s enthusiasm on the ball was quelled, allowing the hosts to run away with the points.

The Leicester midfielder enjoyed an eventful Premier League debut against Swansea on Saturday, starting with a crunching early tackle on Sam Clucas that earned him a yellow card. The Malian was then denied a debut goal by Lukasz Fabianski’s excellent close-range stop, before straying offside as Wilfred Ndidi saw his effort ruled out on the half-hour mark.

Sturridge was handed his first West Brom start, but manager Alan Pardew admitted afterwards it was 50-50 whether he opted for Jay Rodriguez.

The striker was largely subdued throughout his 62 minutes on the pitch but he very nearly broke his duck in the first half, firing a left-footed shot over the bar from Chris Brunt’s pass.

Given Salomon Rondon’s display and Rodriguez’s upturn in form, there’s no guarantee that Sturridge will be first choice at The Hawthorns next time out.

Carrilo was only given a second-half cameo in the 1-1 draw with Brighton in midweek, but Southampton’s club-record signing showed signs of a good understanding with Dusan Tadic during his 75 minutes on Saturday.

Carrillo came close to scoring when he met Ryan Bertrand’s cross in the first half but Ben Foster made a fine save at his near post, and his overall work rate will encourage Saints supporters.

Mkhitaryan was outstanding on his first start for Arsenal, providing a hat-trick of assists as Arsenal ran riot against Everton. The former Manchester United man set up Aaron Ramsey’s first and third goals either side of providing the pass for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s debut strike.

He also impressed defensively, tracking back diligently and making more tackles and interceptions combined (seven) than any of his Arsenal team-mates. All in all, an excellent night’s work for the Armenian.

It was dream debut for Aubameyang. The former Borussia Dortmund man showed his blistering pace when he latched onto Mesut Ozil’s pass and forced a save from Pickford in the first half, but he didn’t have to wait long for his goal. The finish - deftly chipped over the advancing Everton goalkeeper - showed impressive composure, albeit from an offside position.

Walcott made his return to the Emirates Stadium just two weeks after swapping Arsenal for Everton. He might have done better with a first-half chance which was blocked by Shkodran Mustafi, but there were flashes of his quality - including two fine crosses in the second half. He was substituted to a standing ovation from the home supporters.
