West Brom 2 Southampton 3: Heartfelt tributes to Cyrille Regis but agony for Albion as Saints take the spoils

Show/hide article…

On a raw, emotion-drenched afternoon in the heart of the Black Country, West Brom honoured the late, great Cyrille Regis with pride and passion, but remain adrift at the foot of the table after a costly defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Southampton.

Given the perfect start by Ahmed Hegazi’s early opener, Albion subsided against a Southampton side able to celebrate their first league win since a 4-1 beating of Everton in November.

While they will not be fortunate enough to face sides as weak as Albion every week, this was a significant moment for under-pressure Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who had endured travelling supporters calling for his sacking before his side’s dramatic turnaround.

Southampton stunned their hosts with two goals, a brilliant strike from Mario Lemina and an artful header by Jack Stephens, just before the interval. Confidence surging, they added a third early in the second half, though it was not without a moment of self-induced controversy. Sofiane Boufel had his heart set on taking a free-kick and had to be led away by team-mates before James Ward-Prose drove past goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Salomon Rondon headed Albion back into the game 18 minutes from the end but Southampton, showing new-found resolution, held firm for a crucial and deserved victory.

PHOTOS: Saints climb out of the relegation zone with dramatic 2-3 win

Show/hide article…

SAINTS claimed all three points in a frenetic Premier League match, moving out of the relegation zone and leaving hosts West Brom in deeper trouble at the bottom of the table.

Goals from Mario Lemina and Jack Stephens turned the game on its head after Ahmed Hegazi’s opener. James Ward-Prowse sealed a 3-2 victory with a free-kick in the second half, before Salomon Rondon pulled a goal back in the last 20 minutes.

West Brom’s former Southampton boss Alan Pardew handed on-loan Daniel Sturridge his first start for the Baggies, while Mauricio Pellegrino also played a new attacker - Guido Carrillo starting for the first time since his £19million move from Monaco last month.

Albion paid tribute to the late Cyrille Regis prior to kick-off - and when the game started the supporters did not have to wait long for the first goal.

Chris Brunt’s pinpoint corner found Hegazi, who had escaped his marker - and the defender’s powerful header found the net to provide the hosts with an early advantage.

Saints immediately went about trying to bring themselves level. Sofiane Boufal, whose wonderful solo goal in the reverse fixture was enough to win the day, tried his luck from distance with a shot which brushed Ben Foster’s far post.

The visitors continued to see plenty of the ball but seemed to be missing Charlie Austin’s guile in the final third - until they made the breakthrough from a set-piece.

Only moments after chants from the away end of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” were aimed at Pellegrino, Boufal picked the ball up from a corner, fed Lemina on the edge of the area and the midfielder lashed in a terrific equaliser.

One became two within minutes when Stephens’ flicked header nestled into the far corner, meaning the beleaguered hosts - who had managed just two home wins all season - required a response after the interval.

It did not come, with Pellegrino’s motivated side picking up where they left off.

Wesley Hoedt’s barnstorming run from defence was only ended when he was scythed down by Gareth McAuley and Ward-Prowse finished off the free-kick from the edge of the area.

The excellent Lemina and Boufal were controlling the midfield, and full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares were enjoying plenty of freedom too.

There was a change in momentum though when Pardew turned to his bench and introduced former Southampton attacker Jay Rodriguez and youngster Oliver Burke, with the latter immediately involved.

Scotland Under-21 international Burke brought down Rondon’s cross, skipped past Hoedt and remained on his feet despite a challenge from Alex McCarthy.

Albion maintained their urgency and when Rondon headed in another splendid Brunt cross, The Hawthorns rediscovered its voice.

However, Saints held on for a crucial success which eases the pressure on Pellegrino.

Premier League round-up: Sanchez scores first Man United goal, West Ham’s woes continue with Brighton defeat

Show/hide article…

A first Manchester United goal for Alexis Sanchez, a five-goal thriller at the Hawthorns, and some spectacular strikes - it’s been another thrilling Saturday in the Premier League! Here’s what happened in the 3pm kick-offs…

Substitutes Josh King and Lys Mousset struck second-half goals as in-form Bournemouth came from behind to inflict a first defeat on new Stoke boss Paul Lambert.

The struggling Potters looked on course to make it seven points from nine under Lambert’s charge when Xherdan Shaqiri headed them into a deserved early lead at the Vitality Stadium.

But Bournemouth battled back to score twice in the final quarter of the match and secure a 2-1 victory which extends their Premier League unbeaten run to a club record seven games and drops City back into the bottom three.

West Ham’s week of turmoil ended with defeat at Brighton to plunge them back into the relegation mix.

Goals from Glenn Murray, Jose Izquierdo [celebrating below] and Pascal Gross secured just win in 14 matches for the Seagulls to boost their own chances of avoiding the drop.

Javier Hernandez was on target for West Ham, but it was a miserable end to a turbulent few days for the east London club, who had to sack their head of recruitment Tony Henry after claims he told agents they did not want to sign any more African players.

Anger and frustration towards the West Ham board from supporters is at an all-time high following the scandal, as well as an underwhelming transfer window which saw a club linked with Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi and Daniel Sturridge end up with Jordan Hugill from Preston.

Swansea’s resurgence continued as they climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a hard-fought draw at Leicester, who were again without wantaway midfielder Riyad Mahrez.

All the pre-match talk was about the AWOL Algerian, who has not been seen by the club since his proposed move to Manchester City collapsed on Wednesday.

Mahrez unexpectedly missed the defeat at Everton that night and has not been at training subsequently, although his absence on Saturday was anticipated as Leicester boss Claude Puel allowed the former PFA Player of the year time to “clear his head.”

It looked like he might not be missed as Leicester played some lovely football during the first half and took the lead after 17 minutes through Jamie Vardy.

However, after Federico Fernandez [below] headed Swansea level early in the second half, Leicester lacked the guile and craft so often provided by Mahrez to respond and had to settle for a point.

Alexis Sanchez’s first goal for Manchester United wrapped up a comfortable victory against Huddersfield on a day when the clubs came together to remember those who lost their lives in the Munich air disaster.

Tuesday is the 60th anniversary of the tragedy which claimed 23 lives, including eight of the players, as Sir Matt Busby’s side returned from a European Cup match at Red Star Belgrade.

Silence fell upon Old Trafford as those lost were remembered ahead of a match that United won, with goals from Romelu Lukaku and home debutant Sanchez sealing the victory against David Wagner’s Terriers.

Huddersfield struggled to create clear-cut chances in their first league trip to Old Trafford since March 1972 but dug deep in the first half to frustrate the hosts, who claimed a penalty when Terence Kongolo poleaxed Scott McTominay.

United were struggling for a creative spark but went up a gear after half-time, going ahead within 10 minutes of the restart when Lukaku smartly turned home a Juan Mata cross.

Sanchez won a penalty and saw it saved, only to turn home the rebound on his Old Trafford debut as United bounced back from the midweek loss at Tottenham, extending Huddersfield’s winless Premier League run to an eighth match.

Southampton claimed all three points in a frenetic Premier League match, moving out of the relegation zone and leaving hosts West Brom in deeper trouble at the bottom of the table.

Goals from Mario Lemina and Jack Stephens turned the game on its head after Ahmed Hegazi had given the hosts an early lead…

James Ward-Prowse then put the Saints two goals ahead with a pinpoint a free-kick in the second half, before Salomon Rondon pulled a goal back for the Baggies in the last 20 minutes.

Earlier on Saturday, Premier League leaders Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley. Read our full report here.

Ward-Prowse: We dug deep

Show/hide article…

Despite falling behind in the fourth minute, the visitors rallied brilliantly to eventually earn a dramatic 3-2 victory that lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Ward-Prowse, who set up Jack Stephens for Southampton’s second goal, before scoring the third from a free-kick, said: "We knew it was going to be tough here, but it’s an important three points.

“No matter how we won the game, it’s just important that we dug in deep. Ok, we’ve not been playing the best of football, but we dug in together and got the vital three points.”

Ward-Prowse had to fight off Sofiane Boufal’s desire to take what proved to be the decisive free-kick, but he said that moment simply showcased the desire that exists within the whole team to get out of trouble in the table.

“There’s a bit of competition for the free-kicks, but it shows how passionate we all are,” he said.

“There’s a good feeling around the team and all the lads want to do well to help the team. Thankfully for me, I was able to do that today, but Sofiane played brilliantly and did his part as well.”

Stephens: I owed the team

Show/hide article…

Jack Stephens continued his hot streak against West Brom, making it three goals in three games, and said he owed his team one at The Hawthorns after losing his man for the opening strike of the match.

Saints went 1-0 down in just the fourth minute after Ahmed Hegazi got clear of Stephens to head home Chris Brunt’s corner.

But centre-back Stephens redeemed himself later in the half, following up Mario Lemina’s thunderbolt equaliser with a deft header to put the visitors 2-1 ahead going into half-time, helping to set up what ultimately proved to be a dramatic 3-2 success.

The defender, who had not scored a senior goal until he kicked off this run in the FA Cup win over Watford last month, said: "It was one of them where as soon as you head it you know it’s going to go in.

"Obviously, Prowsey put in a great ball, as he usually does, and it’s all about getting the timing on your run and thankfully I did that.

"I was disappointed with West Brom’s opening goal – he was my man – so it’s nice to make up for it.’

Stephens added: "I think going into the break 2-1 up made a big difference and gave the dressing room a big boost.

"Obviously, coming out after half-time I thought we played really well. We then gave away a sloppy goal and had to hold on for the last 20 minutes, but overall it’s a great three points.

"We need to keep going now. There’s no point coming here and getting a big three points then going on losing or drawing. We need to use this to push on now and get out of the situation we’re in.

“No one at this football club wants to be in this situation. It’s down to us that we’re in it, and it’s only us who can get out of it.”

Lemina on critical win

Show/hide article…

The industry of the central pairing of Lemina and Oriol Romeu laid the platform for the visitors’ recovery against West Brom following Ahmed Hegazi’s early opener and the Gabon international was keen to emphasise that the same hard work will continue to serve his team well going forwards.

“I’m very happy for the team,” he said. “I know that you have to work hard to get the wins in moments like this and we got an important one today. Let’s hope we can build on this momentum.

“This needs to be the standard that we set going forwards. We perhaps ought to have scored again to kill off the game quicker because they had chances and we conceded to let them back in.

“We’re pleased with the win but at 3-2 the result wasn’t as certain as it could have been.”

As first goals in new colours go, his 40th-minute strike will be tough to beat at club level even if it wasn’t his best, pipped to the post by a stunning effort for Gabon against Ivory Coast…

“The best goal of my career? No, I scored an even better one against the Ivory Coast for Gabon. But still, this was a very important one to get us off the mark. I am proud to have scored my first goal for the club.”
