West Bromwich Albion 2-3 Southampton - Saints climb out of the relegation zone with comeback win

Show/hide article…

SAINTS claimed all three points in a frenetic Premier League match, moving out of the relegation zone and leaving hosts West Brom in deeper trouble at the bottom of the table.

Goals from Mario Lemina and Jack Stephens turned the game on its head after Ahmed Hegazi’s opener. James Ward-Prowse sealed a 3-2 victory with a free-kick in the second half, before Salomon Rondon pulled a goal back in the last 20 minutes.

West Brom’s former Southampton boss Alan Pardew handed on-loan Daniel Sturridge his first start for the Baggies, while Mauricio Pellegrino also played a new attacker - Guido Carrillo starting for the first time since his £19million move from Monaco last month.

Albion paid tribute to the late Cyrille Regis prior to kick-off - and when the game started the supporters did not have to wait long for the first goal.

Chris Brunt’s pinpoint corner found Hegazi, who had escaped his marker - and the defender’s powerful header found the net to provide the hosts with an early advantage.

Saints immediately went about trying to bring themselves level. Sofiane Boufal, whose wonderful solo goal in the reverse fixture was enough to win the day, tried his luck from distance with a shot which brushed Ben Foster’s far post.

The visitors continued to see plenty of the ball but seemed to be missing Charlie Austin’s guile in the final third - until they made the breakthrough from a set-piece.

Only moments after chants from the away end of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” were aimed at Pellegrino, Boufal picked the ball up from a corner, fed Lemina on the edge of the area and the midfielder lashed in a terrific equaliser.

One became two within minutes when Stephens’ flicked header nestled into the far corner, meaning the beleaguered hosts - who had managed just two home wins all season - required a response after the interval.

It did not come, with Pellegrino’s motivated side picking up where they left off.

Wesley Hoedt’s barnstorming run from defence was only ended when he was scythed down by Gareth McAuley and Ward-Prowse finished off the free-kick from the edge of the area.

The excellent Lemina and Boufal were controlling the midfield, and full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares were enjoying plenty of freedom too.

There was a change in momentum though when Pardew turned to his bench and introduced former Southampton attacker Jay Rodriguez and youngster Oliver Burke, with the latter immediately involved.

Scotland Under-21 international Burke brought down Rondon’s cross, skipped past Hoedt and remained on his feet despite a challenge from Alex McCarthy.

Albion maintained their urgency and when Rondon headed in another splendid Brunt cross, The Hawthorns rediscovered its voice.

However, Saints held on for a crucial success which eases the pressure on Pellegrino.

West Bromwich Albion 2-3 Southampton - Pellegrino urges Saints to stay humble

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino has urged Saints to “stay humble” after they ended their 12-game winless run in the Premier League with a thrilling comeback victory at West Bromwich Albion.

Saints lifted themselves to 14th in the Premier League with the 3-2 triumph, which marked their first three points since November.

Mario Lemina, Jack Stephens and James Ward-Prowse were all on target as Saints cancelled out Ahmed Hegazi’s opener on four minutes.

Saloman Rondon made it 3-2 on 72 minutes but Saints held on to lift themselves out the relegation zone and ease pressure on Pellegrino, who was targeted by the away fans with chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ after the Baggies went ahead.

“It’s really important for us, obviously,” he said. “Overall, for me, to believe and have the confidence in what we are and what we do on the pitch to reinforce our identity is important.

“Of course, when you don’t have good results everybody comes under criticism, and that’s normal – it’s part of our life.

“But I try and persuade my players that our identity, with the ball on the floor, to create space… today was a difficult situation, it was a really hard game because it was close until the end.

“West Brom are really strong in how they play in crosses, but we deserved to win and probably deserved to score another goal.

“Overall, the most important thing was to improve our level and our belief.”

The 46-year-old chief was delighted with the character his side showed to firstly comeback from a goal down and hold onto their one-goal lead late on after Rondon had headed in the Baggies’ second.

“It was one of the most important aspects today because to react in this way when you conceded so quick you have to have personality to continue playing and creating," he said.

“But sometimes when you don’t score goals at the right time and at the right moment it’s really difficult because the opponent is getting better and you are in trouble.

“But today we were lucky to score goals in the first half and in the second half we deserved to score another one but for me the reaction of the team was really important.

“I repeat three points is really important but we have to stay humble because in the Premier League, in one or two weeks, when you’re the bottom, everything can change.

“We have to do a lot of things still.”

Pellegrino hopes to build bridges with fans

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino hopes the 3-2 comeback win at West Bromwich Albion can build bridges between him and the fans.

Pellegrino was subject to chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ from the away end at The Hawthorns after Saints went 1-0 down early on through Ahmed Hagazi’s goal.

However, after Saints sealed a thrilling 3-2 comeback win thanks to Mario Lemina, Jack Stephens and James Ward-Prowse’s goals, the under-pressure 46-year-old boss hopes he can have a better relationship with the supporters.

He said: “Yes, for sure. This is victory is everyone at the club, for the fans, for our employer.

"In our club you must breathe togetherness always even in difficult situations and we try to work together to show we can win games.

Pellegrino was pleased with new £19.2m club-record signing Guido Carrillo on his first start for Saints.

The 6ft3in Argentine, who arrived from Monaco in the January transfer window, put in a good shift and was a focal point for the team and tested Ben Foster with a near post effort from Ryan Bertrand’s cross.

Pellegrino said: “I think he was right. It wasn’t easy for him because West Brom are one of the biggest teams in the Premier League in how they play. They are really strong.

“I think he supported the ball well. He was always in the box trying to be dangerous. He did well.”
