Southampton FC: Mauricio Pellegrino refuses to criticise Pep Guardiola over Nathan Redmond incident

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has refused to criticise Pep Guardiola for confronting Nathan Redmond after Manchester City’s last-gasp 2-1 win over Southampton.

City boss Guardiola approached Redmond on the field and addressed the Saints forward animatedly, at full-time in Wednesday’s Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.

The Football Association has asked Guardiola to explain his actions, while Redmond insisted the City manager was “only very complimentary” to him, in a statement.

Southampton manager Pellegrino has insisted he still has not seen the incident, nor discussed it with Redmond, and refused to be drawn on the issue.

“I didn’t see anything, because after the finish I went to the dressing room as quickly as possible,” said Pellegrino, of Guardiola’s full-time flashpoint with Redmond.

"I don’t know what happened. I don’t have any comment.

"I can’t manage the reaction of others.

“I’ve got enough problems to solve with my team. I can’t say anything about that.”

Asked if he had spoken to Redmond about the incident or reviewed it on video, Pellegrino replied: "No, no.

"Sometimes when you’re playing games you have to manage these emotional moments, even when you’ve got a good result or a bad result.

"I try to respect everybody, and I didn’t see anything else with a lack of respect.

“I didn’t feel anything special, because I didn’t see anything. But right now I can’t comment on anything.”

Saints boss Pellegrino faces injury concerns ahead of Bournemouth trip

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton right back Cedric Soares will miss Sunday’s Premier League trip to south coast rivals Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, while manager Mauricio Pellegrino will make a late call on striker Shane Long, who has a calf problem.

Soares, one of three Southampton players to have played all 14 league games this season, limped off during the latter stages of Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester City.

“Cedric will not be ready for Sunday, and Shane Long has got an issue in his calf. So we’ve got some players with a problem today,” Pellegrino told a news conference on Friday.

”Maybe tomorrow we’ll review, and we’ll decide how he (Long) is. The doctor will check, but today he couldn’t train, it is a little bit sore in the calf. Tomorrow we’ll make a decision.

“Most of my players are ready to compete and with the fixture calendar we have in the next two months, that is good news for us.”

Southampton, who have lost three of their last four league matches, dropped to 11th in the standings following their defeat at the Etihad Stadium and have seven league games left this year, including clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Pellegrino expects another tough test at Bournemouth, who have been trying to establish themselves in the top flight under manager Eddie Howe since gaining promotion in 2015.

“Obviously I know that Bournemouth is a side that wants to grow and wants to be little by little getting better every year,” he said.

”They try to keep the base of the team and most of the team grew together, and every year they try to be stronger even at home because in the last few games they have been picking up points.

“I think it will be really tough.”

Sunday’s south coast derby match will be only the fifth Premier League encounter between the two sides, with Southampton winning 3-1 at the Vitality Stadium last season.

Jose Mourinho ‘not surprised’ to see Pep Guardiola go unpunished

Show/hide article…

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed he was “not surprised” to see Pep Guardiola go unpunished for running onto the pitch after Raheem Sterling’s late winner for Manchester City against Southampton.

Guardiola was told to calm down by referee Paul Tierney after encroaching onto the field of play while celebrating Sterling’s 96th-minute strike in his side’s 2-1 victory on Wednesday.

The Catalan apologised to Tierney for his over-zealousness and the official decided to take no further action, with Guardiola remaining in the City dugout until the final whistle.

Mourinho, however, was sent to the stands during a 1-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s in September after fourth official Mike Jones spotted the United manager step onto the pitch.

Last season, Mourinho complained that rules regarding behaviour on the touchline “must to be the same for every manager” and on Friday, ahead of his side’s trip to Arsenal, he was asked whether he was surprised by the inconsistency in the decisions.

“Surprised? No. Not surprised,” the United manager said, though he was reluctant to explain why he had expected that Guardiola would not be sent to the stands.

“I can’t answer the second question,” Mourinho added. “If you are my friends don’t ask me the question because you know I get into problems.”

Though Guardiola escaped punishment for running onto the pitch, the City manager has been asked by the Football Association to explain his post-match conversation with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond.

Television images captured Guardiola speaking in an animated and aggressive manner with Redmond on the pitch after the final whistle, though both he and the player insist that it was a friendly exchange.

FA decision not to punish Pep Guardiola ‘no surprise’ to Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho

Show/hide article…

The Football Association’s decision not to punish Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for his pitch celebrations against Southampton is “no surprise” to Jose Mourinho.

But the Manchester United manager insisted he could not vent his true feelings for fear of landing himself in trouble with the FA as he appeared to hint at double standards. Mourinho was also reluctant to discuss Guardiola’s heated post-match discussion with Southampton forward Nathan Redmond for similar reasons.

The City manager, who expressed “regret” for the Redmond confrontation, must give his written observations to the FA before 6pm on Monday.

Mourinho was sent to the stands by referee Craig Pawson near the end of United’s 1-0 win at Southampton in September for momentarily stepping foot on the pitch while play was going on, although the FA took no further action.

Guardiola ran onto the Etihad Stadium pitch after Raheem Sterling’s 96th-minute winner, punching the air with delight until referee Paul Tierney asked him to calm down but opted against sending him off.
