Manchester United FC: Jose Mourinho ‘not surprised’ Pep Guardiola avoided punishment for Southampton incident

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho is “not surprised” Pep Guardiola was not punished for encroaching on the pitch on Wednesday - as the Manchester United boss was earlier this season.

Mourinho, who has claimed in the past he is treated differently to other managers, was sent to the stands by referee Craig Pawson for stepping onto the field during stoppage time of the 1-0 win at Southampton in September.

That did not happen to Manchester City counterpart Guardiola when he ran on to the pitch while celebrating the Blues’ last-gasp winner in Wednesday’s 2-1 home victory over the Saints.

And when asked on Friday if he was surprised Guardiola did not get the same punishment he had, the Portuguese said: “Surprised? No. Not surprised.”

Mourinho was then asked why he was not surprised, and said: "I can’t answer to the second question.

“You know - if you are my friends, don’t ask me the question, because you know I get into problems.”

What did emerge on Friday was that Guardiola had been asked by the Football Association to explain his version of events with regard to his animated post-match conversation with Southampton’s Nathan Redmond.

Pellegrino prepares to freshen Saints up

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino will turn to his Everton heroes and fresh legs at neighbours AFC Bournemouth tomorrow – but admits he also has the “bigger picture” to consider.

The 46-year-old manager deployed a defensive 3-5-2 formation during the narrow 2-1 defeat at Manchester City, but is planning to return to a more attacking outlook at the Vitality Stadium.

As well as swapping back to the 4-2-3-1 system, that will also mean recalling many of the top performers from the 4-1 thrashing of the Toffees.

It is likely two-goal man Charlie Austin, Sofiane Boufal, Dusan Tadic, Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse will all be recalled for the Cherries trip.

However, Pellegrino is also fully aware that Saints have a jam-packed schedule, with eight games in the space of a month, and needs to be aware of this when making his selection.

“I will change a little bit, thinking about Sunday, because we had a difficult game the other day, physically,” Pellegrino explained.

“I’ve got some of them fresh and ready to play, especially in attack.

“But in the next two games we don’t know, we never know what will happen in the future, we’ll just think about Sunday.

“The next game is the most important but you also have to see the bigger picture a little bit.

“Always I try to give chances to players who deserve to be on the pitch, not just because it’s part of the squad, that’s completely different."

Saints looked comfortable and organised in the 3-5-2 system at City, but, while Pellegrino envisages using that formation again, he’s not sure if he’s ready to deploy it every game.

“Yes, it could be, it’s another possibility, we’ve got people to do it,” he said, when asked if the 3-5-2 will be used again.

“Depending on the opponent we can show the stronger side of the team, too.”

But the Argentine will likely return to the 4-2-3-1 set-up tomorrow.

“I think my team is more comfortable playing this way, but I believe more in the style than the shape,” he said.

“The shape is something we have to organise with and without the ball and in different ways.

“The most important is the dynamic to create between the players. But we showed we can play in a different way, with character.”

Pellegrino is relishing a trip to Cherries tomorrow and believes it will be a game full of emotion.

“This is the fifth derby in the Premier League, and the emotion of the game will make it tough,” he said.

"Obviously I know that Bournemouth want to grow and want to get better year by year, little by little.

"They want to keep the base of the team they have grown together.

"I admire this kind of job done by Eddie Howe, moving up from the Championship, and looking for improvements little by little. Every single year they try to be stronger.

“It’s good for the league to have English managers doing well.”

Man City expecting organised West Ham - Vincent Kompany

Show/hide article…

Vincent Kompany expects David Moyes to be studying the gameplans of Huddersfield and Southampton in search of a way to stop Manchester City.

But the City captain has warned the West Ham boss that the Premier League leaders also expect to have learnt from their last games as they bid to get back to their dynamic best on Sunday.

Huddersfield and Southampton both went close to ending City’s long winning run but their efforts were ultimately undone by late Raheem Sterling goals.

Moyes’ Hammers are the next visitors to the Etihad Stadium as City look to extend a winning run that now stretches to 19 games in all competitions and 12 in the Premier League.

Kompany said: 'I put myself in the position if I was the manager of West Ham, I suppose I would’ve seen the images against Southampton and Huddersfield, I would’ve seen what causes trouble and I would’ve trained extremely hard on those points for that game.

‘But if I was the City manager, I would’ve seen the same thing and I would’ve trained extremely hard on making sure these teams cannot exploit that.’

Huddersfield and Southampton both adopted cautious approaches, absorbing considerable pressure by defending deep but then posing a threat with the occasional counter-attack or from set-pieces.

They may have fallen short but City, who earlier in the season enjoyed thumping wins over Liverpool (5-0), Watford (6-0), Crystal Palace (5-0) and Stoke (7-2), have been stifled.

Kompany said: 'I can see a period of time where teams will try to play this approach but as teams will need points eventually, as teams will need to further their own agenda, I think it will settle again and we will have a more open game with both teams trying to win it.

‘In this case it’s proven nearly successful for the teams who did it, but at the same time as they’re adopting this approach, we’re learning how to deal with it as well, so as soon as we find a way through it, I think it’ll change again.’

Sunday’s clash with West Ham will see the return to the Etihad Stadium of a former City favourite.

Pablo Zabaleta joined the Londoners in the summer after a nine-year spell at City that saw him win two Premier League titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

Such was the right-back’s contribution to City’s modern history, he was presented with a lifetime season ticket when he left.

Kompany said: 'It’ll be strange for him but I’m sure he’ll get a warm reception.

'I kind of feel he’ll be dreading this game as well a bit, knowing Zaba and knowing that he’s been at the Etihad and seen what the players can do if it goes wrong for you.

'But knowing Zaba he’ll probably rise up to the challenge and probably have his best game of the season.

‘It’ll be great and this place is always going to be his home, no matter what.’

Pellegrino backs Pied to shine

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino has backed reserve right-back Jeremy Pied to shine at neighbours AFC Bournemouth tomorrow in Cedric Soares’ absence.

With Cedric out against the Cherries with a hamstring injury he picked up late on the 2-1 defeat at Manchester City, Pied will be drafted in to replace him for the lunchtime kick-off at the Vitality Stadium.

The Frenchman has not played in the Premier League this term, with his only appearance coming in the 2-0 defeat at St Mary’s to Championship side Wolves in the League Cup.

But, while Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida can also play at right-back, Pied, who likes to get forward, is the most like-for-like replacement to Cedric.

“I feel most of my players are ready to play right now. Jeremy has played with the reserves and has trained well, he’s one of the examples in the squad in the way that he trains every single day without being on the list for most of the games.

“It’s really difficult to keep the motivation, and he will have the opportunity to show how he’s competing now.

“When you play one game in 15 it’s not easy, but the team will try to support him to try to play well.”

Pellegrino has taken time to speak to the 28-year-old, who signed for Saints on a free in August 2016.

“I told him that he will play, because I feel he’s ready to do it, prepared to do it, well prepared to do it,” he said.

Shane Long is also a doubt for the match with a calf problem, which Saints will run tests on today.

“Tomorrow (Saturday) we will review; we will decide how he is,” Pellegrino said about Long.

“The doctor will check. Today (Friday), he couldn’t train. It’s a little bit sore in the calf and tomorrow we will decide.”

The Republic of Ireland international started at City, but, even if he is fit, it will be likely Charlie Austin will get the nod upfront against the Cherries, having netted a brace against Everton last Sunday.

Long was favoured at City to give Austin a rest and also because of his work-rate and ability to stretch the game on the counter-attack, something that favoured Saints’ approach at the Etihad Stadium.

“Charlie has got the possibility to be in the team. He can play a good game and I imagine that it will be different than against City,” he said.

“Not just Charlie but everyone needs to be focused and motivated to win this game.”
